This cat is carrying a very important torch from another era of drumming that very few drummers have the skills to do. An incredible drummer and an outstanding drum educator. The sky is the limit for this guy.
He's mediocre and arrogant from what I saw. He completely missed the accents that create a poly rhythm over the roll, then presumes he played it just as Buddy Rich did. Do you really think that late in his career, Buddy was "impressing" people with simple rolls. No, his roll wasn't simple. It was what the kid described PLUS accents/poly rhythms. Either, there are a lot of jazz fans here that don't play, or there are a lot of armature drummers Listen to riches performance, and you'll hear two flams and a bass strike a few seconds apart, followed by three more flams and bass kicks in rapid succession, all of which is done while doing the single stroke roll. Then, listen to this guy's performance. It's just a roll. It's laughable!!!

The author of the video says, "Learn to play buddy rich licks," then goes on to completely miss what made the original lick difficult at all and demonstrated a complete lack of skill or understanding. He didn't play the lick correctly. If he can't play the lick himself, then how would he teach it to anyone else. Buddy rich didn't play a simple open stroke roll, but the author did and said it was the same. Which is a blatant falsehood. You can try and defend him anyway you like, but the truth that has gone over your head is that he promised one thing then failed to deliver, yet acted/believed he delivered. If you can't hear the difference perhaps you need hearing aids
@Hahnsoulo , I'm not interpreting his demeanor. Do you have ears? Go back and listen to Rich. Then go back and listen to this guy. One is playing a simple role. The other is playing a roll WITH ACCENTS A SLIGHT SHUFFLE AND BASS AND CYMBALS. The combination of which forms a poly rhythm that the first guy doesn't even attempt to notice. It's not about his demeanor, it's about saying he's going to teach X, but then goes on to teach a simple Y instead. HE DIDNT DELIVER ON HIS PROMISE and failed to even learn what he claimed to be teaching. It's not about his attitude (for the most part), it's that he lied. Worse yet, he either believes it or doesn't recognize that he didn't, in fact, play what rich played. Nor did he teach what rich played because he hadn't learned what Rich played. Yet he claims he did. That's the issue. It's not an opinion. It's not about how he handles himself. It's about he objectively lied or failed.

@@TheMotigabay I think it's due to them being taken out of the context of a performance, he technically played them well but due to it just being a presentation, it lacked soul and obviously seemed lack luster compared to the clips of buddy going all out with his band

I enjoyed all of it. 🥁 I’m nearly 62 now & have been a drummer since the late 60’s. I am so thrilled so see such talented musicians/drummers coming up the ranks. From my perspective, drummers have really raised the bar. Students are learning at such an accelerated pace now from when I started. And everyone is sharing their knowledge through RUclips. I truly enjoy watching all of you as you share with others what you’ve learned. Please continue the great progress all of you are making by learning, sharing & growing into the greatest generation of musicians/drummers & percussionists I’ve ever heard! May God richly bless each & everyone of you who pick up a pair of sticks & sit down behind a trap set to play & create some of the most incredible entertaining music I’ve ever heard! Plus: guiding a hole orchestra live, during a show, and not in a closed room with an electronic metronome, where you restart whenever you want / need ... and more deep: to create all of these to be played along with an orchestra. Its huge.
@@fluim0102 Maybe it can't be played exactly same way, but drummers could get close enough to where it's identical. I also think Larnell Lewis could play some Buddy chops, specifically the ones demonstrated in this video, and I may catch some heat for this but some of the fills Greyson is showing here aren't insanely difficult to play it just requires a lot of practice obviously lol.
@@jaydoode15 I think that was his intention, to help demystify these Buddy Licks. So many people that watched Buddy play call him the best drummer ever and rightfully so. However as you said most of what he plays isn’t that difficult. I’m sure Joe Morello could play most of Buddy’s licks but that wasn’t his style. 🤣
Just an FYI, Buddy was actually having a heart attack during that solo in 1982 at the concert of the Americas. If you watch that solo closely, from the beginning of the complete solo, he does a pattern that he did frequently. It was singles between the snare and floor tom tom. After he went through that, at blazing speed, you can see that his expression changed and he knew something was wrong. He got through the solo and even played the trademark slow to fast singles, as seen here, played the tune out, thanked the audience, then walked off. He collapsed as he just made it to the curtain, and the paramedics were called to care for him. It was only 2 months later that he suffered a massive heart attack in January of 83' while playing in Ann Arbor Michigan. He had a quadruple bypass operation and went back to work in 6 weeks after the operation. He first appearance was in London, and I got to see him 8 weeks after the operation, at a place called The Bottom Line in NYC. Before, this major heart attack in January and up until he had the heart attack in Michigan, he was playing a custom built set of DW drums, that I own til this day. I spoke to Buddy many times about that drum set and he always remembered that I had it every time I had the opportunity to talk with him at a show. He was a true Master of the craft and legend.
You have a holly grail drum kit sir, the value of that kit is probably so high , you couldn’t actually put a price on it, i would keep that till i die and pass it on to someone who truly deserves to care for it.

Ultimate drummer yes. But I've never heard him play a piece that wasn't just about the Buddy Rich drum solo, and I don't go for that sort of self-indulgent boredom. He could have been awesome underpinning a band, with occasional drum solos. Instead the band were just there to fill the time between his limelight slots. Without doubt ten times better on the drums than I will ever be. He's really, really technically capable. But there's more to music than just technical chops, and I rapidly lose interest after the first "yep, that's really impressive, oh man, he's going on a bit. A lot. Yep, people are applauding. He's still going. Oh good grief, he's still going."

Great lessons!!! This is a testament to how truly great Buddy was....these videos of Buddy are over 50 years old...and we're still talking about them and breaking them down.
Got to see Buddy three times live, in little venues. Videos don't do it justice. Your draw drops when you see a guy preform at that level. Truly one of a kind. I would walk out of the shows thinking to myself how do I get to that level, and one day it occurred to me... nobody is really at that level. Made things a whole lot easier.
Greyson, I am 61 and played drums in my earlier years. Watched Buddy for years and his solos still amaze me to this day. This was my first video where I saw Buddy’s licks explained and demoed very thoroughly. Bravo sir! Very nicely done and I look forward to more of your videos! 🙂
In 1978 I was twenty one and went to see Buddy Rich and his band at the Turn of The Century here in Denver. My girlfriend and I and another couple were all good looking and perhps therefore placed at a table directly in front of Buddy's drum kit. We were maybe 5 feet max away from his bass drum. I used to play the drums through high school, mainly in stage band class, so I couldn't wait to see him. Well, he absolutely blew everyone away with his and his band's performance. I was mesmerized at the speed of his hands and accuracy. He never made a mistake. He was truly gifted and honestly there was nothing he couldn't do. The band was simply powerful and untouchable. Really glad you did this. Very motivational for anyone who wants to learn about playing the drums. Anyone seriously interested in learning drumming should be turned into your channel. Also very glad to see you using traditional grip instead of match grip. Buddy always thought your could do more with traditional.
This slow motion thing is amazing. Somehow, I’ve never seen people use a high speed camera to capture drumming with such clarity with education in mind.

What an amazing way to honor Buddy! Greyson is humble in knowing that all drummers play their own material best from being so used to it. Greyson is one of the best jazz players and probably one of the best drummers I've ever seen. So hard to tell, it's even hard to fully conclude that Buddy was the best of all time ...it's more theoretical from how amazing so many players are.. Greyson is definitely one of the greats! I forgot to mention something, Special that I got to do, I really don't, Have to, but I want to tell now, And rub in the #valebliz Face 😂 Well after an Amazing Exciting, "Buddy Rich" 🥁🥁 Concert, I was personally invited to come Aboard The Infamous Buddy Rich, Tour Bus, Wow Amazing Experience, Buddy always sat in the first seat, Opposite the driver's seat, Came inside, buddy sitting there, In a white Ralph Lauren, terry cloth, Robe, got to talk to him about 10 minutes And standing by me was Steve Markus, Buddy's long-time Tenor Saxophone 🎷 Man, chatting, and got photos taken, Keeling next to the Legend Buddy Rich I didn't want to get off the bus, take, Me with you on the road, I could be, Your Valet, the guy who gets buddy, Whatever he needs, fresh towels, Drinks etc... Anyway I will never forget that evening I felt like I'm so lucky and blessed 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁The Man "ONE OF A KIND" 🙏👍🥰❤

Yeah, a prodigious talent for sure. Also check out Mike Mitchell, another amazing young drummer who started playing with Stanley Clarke at something like 18/19 years of age.
I wish I would have studied this type of drumming years ago. I am a self taught rock drummer. At one point playing became boring to me. Now I am learning different styles of playing and it is challenging. Great video!
My dad said Buddy RIch was the greatest drummer, and would never be matched. It is nice that my generation I have someone with such skill to be able to say that to my kids. It's impossible to know who is the greatest drummer, everyone has their own favourite, but having such a talent alive while I am the same age my dad was, is really cool for me. Keep up the inspiring work Greyson, many many future great drummers are going to find inspiration in what you do.
Find the drum duel between Buddy Rich and Ed Shaughnessy on the Tonight Show. Ed was the band drummer for Johnny Carson for decades and one of the best in the business. Buddy clearly takes it easy on him for the sake of entertainment, but easily outclassed him.

I was fortunate to see Rich live at concerts over 30 times and this lad is the closest anyone has come to replicating what Rich achieved. Just awesome and he obviously appreciates what a master Rich was. I would love to see him with a big band ❤
As a Berklee drummer from 1976, while Buddy’s skill is undeniable, as a Jazz musician, I thought of speed like kids cranking-up the volume on the guitar amps. Joe Morello and his finesse with brushes made him my favorite. Nice tutorial!
Respect! You breakdown techniques of an icon without taking anything away from the man’s deserved rep. Actually propping him up while showing others it’s not magic but technique + practice. Ive never heard od Buddy Rich until this drum solo. This young man broke down to a very novice man who loves drumming and understand that its not about power but technique. Very,Very cool breakdown.

@@m42037 Also Buddy was the second highest paid child entertainer in the world and was drumming from a year and half old, I suspect he sounded as good as he did as a teenager. Its a completely different skillset being able to play with that level of dexterity, energy and power but to create those licks in the first place and be able to pull them off in any given situation, never missing a beat and always sounding 100% musical and thats what made him so unique and captivating.
I met buddy when I was 7 yrs old already taking drum lessons at cintiolis music store on rising sun ave in 1967 in philly. No one is better even today. He was and is the best. Neil periot said it perfectly he's on a shelf all by himself .

I love the way Buddy played, and having grown up sitting in front of his bands a lot (1968 until his passing), there's a HUGE long list of things to love about him. One of the things I admire about his playing the most is something he could do on any cymbal or drum... play the WHOLE instrument, from the center to the edges, varying dynamics, kinds of rimshots, momentary muffling, and on and on. Regardless of his enormous ability, he had a way of getting a hundred sounds out of a 6-stroke roll, or something as simple. Not "playing", but "PLAYING" I sure miss him... :)
Buddy will all ways be king in my eyes ! Thank you! I learned to play by ear as a kid, after my instructor died as I was learning to roll. Buddy was my mentor & inspiration from then on. Ginger Baker was another one, along with Gene Krupa.
Great breakdown of what sounds and looks... well impossible. I was lucky enough to see Buddy live standing behind him more than once and could never assimilate what he was doing. I'm 67 years old...Buddy is probably the best drummer in my lifetime....there are many greats...amateur drummer myself for over 55 years....you are the closest thing to BR I've ever seen...awesome...keep up the great work, and thanks! Yes evidently the kid had rich parents and let him practice eight hours a day for 10+ years. How do you think great guitar player's like Steve Vai, Paco De Lucía, Eddie Van etc got to be so great, saying no to their friends and staying home and practice. I went out partying in the 80s and as I got older only played maybe 8 hrs a week if that long
Clean, clear and precise. I even picked my sticks up and played along at a super high tempo of 30bpm! Yes years of practice in those hands - Buddy was a true great for sure, I've got him on my wall next to Bonham and Colaiuta, but this guy is one to watch! Thanks for the vid inspiring.

Thank you for bringing these Buddy Rich licks to life. I first heard his name as a small child. My late father was a drummer and he would play some amazing licks but he always said that Buddy Rich was the best 😊
I saw Buddy in 1977 at Disneyland (CA) and got his autograph and a stick. The man is truly a “virtuoso” and no one has gotten close to his skill even 36 years after he passed away. I must admit this young man here is very impressive.
But it's impossible to judge skill alone there so many genres of music Buddy Rich probably couldn't master. Comparing drummers like Dave Weckl & Senri Kawaguchi for just an example among others, they'll surpassed Buddy Rich. Buddy Rich only mastered jazz & big band.
You have a very good grasp of how Buddy did things for the Impossible solos . Buddy was my "Uncle" as he lived some of the time with my Great Aunt. Buddy would do freeform solo just to relax ... At least 3hrs a day, sometimes up to 7hrs at his most frantic pace, no breaks! He had EXTREMELY particular tastes in his equipment as well as preferences in setting up the kit. He was the King of speed for several reasons. Here's one, drop down the snare so the tips of your drumsticks are about an inch above the skin, lean forward into the roll.
Buddy also worked a small kit manufactured by Swingerland of Chicago Illinois, as he found they provided a much better range of tone. This is Very important as he would create tone from exacting impact placement upon the skins. Smaller kits equal speed. So does allowing for your bodies dimensions (angles at full speed) , it's like the difference between a tailored suit done at the best level versus buying a factory 2nd from Walmart. Comfort was speed for him, don't get cramped, but rather place everything at your fingertips.

Every now and again when life gets a little too heavy from people like yourself making everything all serious, they do silly things to lighten the mood. They'll say something totally nonsensical just to put a little goofiness out there cause why not? Here's where you might be right in your estimation of the first 'blast beat'. But you got it totally wrong because the right answer is STOP TAKING YOURSELF SO FUCKING SERIOUSLY. IT WAS A JOKE.
I was lucky enough to see the Buddy Rich Big Band a couple times when he toured with Mel Torme back in the late ‘70’s. Amazing! Check out his Grammy-winning album “Together Again for the First Time” with Mel from 1978. Also recorded and released as a direct-to-disc. A true master lesson in ensemble drumming.
With that first one you forgot the juicy dynamic emphasis of him layering RL single quarter note strokes over top when hes full speed, making the main roll the ghost notes to the louder single notes
I love this kid. He not only has amazing technique, but he pulls from so many more influences than Buddy Rich had, such as funk, metal, etc. Buddy Rich was an inspiration when I was young, but he had a certain bag of tricks that he typically used. Now that I'm (much) older, I enjoy watching Greyson more than Buddy. Greyson plays with flourish and flair, without being excessively dramatic, as I feel Buddy was. He always looked like he was having a heart attack, years before he actually did.
I think the breakdown of Buddy Rich drum patterns is spot on with a few more tricks he does that could be covered in another video. However, after watching multiple Buddy Rich videos, I would point out one more thing that I believe set Buddy Rich apart from other drummers. In addition to his incredible speed and coordination, I am always equally if not more impressed with his incredible sense of timing in relation to all of the other musicians that he is playing with. His ability to enter and exit and execute incredibly complicated musical arrangements all by memory, and anticipate ahead of time each and every rift and tempo, all while closely monitoring exactly what the rest of his musicians are doing, is truly astounding. The entire Buddy Rich package is far more complicated and impressive than the breakdown of the basic drum patterns that he used. I do also want to compliment the young professional who made this video. If there is anyone who could duplicate a lifetime achievement like Buddy Rich did, it would be someone like this drum instructor. His skills are absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for this great video.
Buddy claimed he never practiced. I’m not sure if he was kidding or not, but you are exactly right about his genius for playing superb drum arrangements that were a perfect fit for the songs, elevating all of the other instrumental parts.
It was nice of him to say he couldn’t play the first lick as smooth or fast as Buddy because of course there was only one Buddy Rich and yes, I could hear the timing errors but he was pretty good. One of the things about Buddy was his stamina. Lots of the highlighted parts of his incredible sessions were after he had already been playing for half an hour keeping perfect timing with an orchestra and fatigue had already set in. It takes strength and perfect timing to sound like that. Greyson will be fine because it’s clear that he is good and cares about details. Good job sir.

Awesome playing. And your mention of illusion in some of these is spot on. Buddy's parents were Vaudevillians, and he was raised up in it. As much as he was an amazing drummer, he was an equally amazing showman.

One of my favorite drummers now and yes I’m on board with anything he plays ! I’m forever learning and I can learn from Him ! Can and will ! And I’ve been playing longer than he’s been living !! He's mediocre and arrogant from what I saw. He completely missed the accents that create a poly rhythm over the roll, then presumes he played it just as Buddy Rich did. Do you really think that late in his career, Buddy was "impressing" people with simple rolls. No, his roll wasn't simple. It was what the kid described PLUS accents/poly rhythms.
Either, there are a lot of jazz fans here that don't play, or there are a lot of armature drummers
Listen to riches performance, and you'll hear two flams and a bass strike a few seconds apart, followed by three more flams and bass kicks in rapid succession, all of which is done while doing the single stroke roll.
Then, listen to this guy's performance. It's just a roll.

The author of the video says, "Learn to play buddy rich licks," then goes on to completely miss what made the original lick difficult at all and demonstrated a complete lack of skill or understanding. He didn't play the lick correctly. If he can't play the lick himself, then how would he teach it to anyone else. Buddy rich didn't play a simple open stroke roll, but the author did and said it was the same. Which is a blatant falsehood. You can try and defend him anyway you like, but the truth that has gone over your head is that he promised one thing then failed to deliver, yet acted/believed he delivered.

@Hahnsoulo , I'm not interpreting his demeanor. Do you have ears? Go back and listen to Rich. Then go back and listen to this guy. One is playing a simple role. The other is playing a roll WITH ACCENTS A SLIGHT SHUFFLE AND BASS AND CYMBALS. The combination of which forms a poly rhythm that the first guy doesn't even attempt to notice.
It's not about his demeanor, it's about saying he's going to teach X, but then goes on to teach a simple Y instead. HE DIDNT DELIVER ON HIS PROMISE and failed to even learn what he claimed to be teaching.
It's not about his attitude (for the most part), it's that he lied. Worse yet, he either believes it or doesn't recognize that he didn't, in fact, play what rich played. Nor did he teach what rich played because he hadn't learned what Rich played. Yet he claims he did. That's the issue. It's not an opinion. It's not about how he handles himself. It's about he objectively lied or failed.
As just another metal head drummer...it's really cool to see someone keeping these classic styles alive at such a high level brother.

I don’t think it’s so much about “can it be played”, but rather, can it be played at the level of nuance and control that he played it.
And the answer is no... Perhaps only by some of the all time greats like Dave Weckl... Love to see someone like Larnell Lewis try this
Plus: guiding a hole orchestra live, during a show, and not in a closed room with an electronic metronome, where you restart whenever you want / need ... and more deep: to create all of these to be played along with an orchestra. Its huge.

played exactly same way, but drummers could get close enough to where it's identical. I also think Larnell Lewis could play some Buddy chops, specifically the ones demonstrated in this video, and I may catch some heat for this but some of the fills Greyson is showing here aren't insanely difficult to play it just requires a lot of practice obviously lol.

However as you said most of what he plays isn’t that difficult. I’m sure Joe Morello could play most of Buddy’s licks but that wasn’t his style. 🤣

Just an FYI, Buddy was actually having a heart attack during that solo in 1982 at the concert of the Americas. If you watch that solo closely, from the beginning of the complete solo, he does a pattern that he did frequently. It was singles between the snare and floor tom tom. After he went through that, at blazing speed, you can see that his expression changed and he knew something was wrong. He got through the solo and even played the trademark slow to fast singles, as seen here, played the tune out, thanked the audience, then walked off. He collapsed as he just made it to the curtain, and the paramedics were called to care for him. It was only 2 months later that he suffered a massive heart attack in January of 83' while playing in Ann Arbor Michigan. He had a quadruple bypass operation and went back to work in 6 weeks after the operation. He first appearance was in London, and I got to see him 8 weeks after the operation, at a place called The Bottom Line in NYC. Before, this major heart attack in January and up until he had the heart attack in Michigan, he was playing a custom built set of DW drums, that I own til this day. I spoke to Buddy many times about that drum set and he always remembered that I had it every time I had the opportunity to talk with him at a show. He was a true Master of the craft and legend.

Ultimate drummer yes. But I've never heard him play a piece that wasn't just about the Buddy Rich drum solo, and I don't go for that sort of self-indulgent boredom. He could have been awesome underpinning a band, with occasional drum solos. Instead the band were just there to fill the time between his limelight slots. Without doubt ten times better on the drums than I will ever be. He's really, really technically capable. But there's more to music than just technical chops, and I rapidly lose interest after the first "yep, that's really impressive, oh man, he's going on a bit. A lot. Yep, people are applauding. He's still going. Oh good grief, he's still going."

Great lessons!!! This is a testament to how truly great Buddy was....these videos of Buddy are over 50 years old...and we're still talking about them and breaking them down.
Got to see Buddy three times live, in little venues. Videos don't do it justice. Your draw drops when you see a guy preform at that level. Truly one of a kind. I would walk out of the shows thinking to myself how do I get to that level, and one day it occurred to me... nobody is really at that level. Made things a whole lot easier.
Greyson, I am 61 and played drums in my earlier years. Watched Buddy for years and his solos still amaze me to this day. This was my first video where I saw Buddy’s licks explained and demoed very thoroughly. Bravo sir! Very nicely done and I look forward to more of your videos! 🙂
In 1978 I was twenty one and went to see Buddy Rich and his band at the Turn of The Century here in Denver. My girlfriend and I and another couple were all good looking and perhps therefore placed at a table directly in front of Buddy's drum kit. We were maybe 5 feet max away from his bass drum. I used to play the drums through high school, mainly in stage band class, so I couldn't wait to see him. Well, he absolutely blew everyone away with his and his band's performance. I was mesmerized at the speed of his hands and accuracy. He never made a mistake. He was truly gifted and honestly there was nothing he couldn't do. The band was simply powerful and untouchable. Really glad you did this. Very motivational for anyone who wants to learn about playing the drums. Anyone seriously interested in learning drumming should be turned into your channel. Also very glad to see you using traditional grip instead of match grip. Buddy always thought your could do more with traditional.

I wish I would have studied this type of drumming years ago. I am a self taught rock drummer. At one point playing became boring to me. Now I am learning different styles of playing and it is challenging. Great video!

It is nice that my generation I have someone with such skill to be able to say that to my kids.
It's impossible to know who is the greatest drummer, everyone has their own favourite, but having such a talent alive while I am the same age my dad was, is really cool for me.

Find the drum duel between Buddy Rich and Ed Shaughnessy on the Tonight Show. Ed was the band drummer for Johnny Carson for decades and one of the best in the business. Buddy clearly takes it easy on him for the sake of entertainment, but easily outclassed him.

As a Berklee drummer from 1976, while Buddy’s skill is undeniable, as a Jazz musician, I thought of speed like kids cranking-up the volume on the guitar amps. Joe Morello and his finesse with brushes made him my favorite. Nice tutorial!

@@m42037 Also Buddy was the second highest paid child entertainer in the world and was drumming from a year and half old, I suspect he sounded as good as he did as a teenager. Its a completely different skillset being able to play with that level of dexterity, energy and power but to create those licks in the first place and be able to pull them off in any given situation, never missing a beat and always sounding 100% musical and thats what made him so unique and captivating.
I met buddy when I was 7 yrs old already taking drum lessons at cintiolis music store on rising sun ave in 1967 in philly. No one is better even today. He was and is the best. Neil periot said it perfectly he's on a shelf all by himself .

I love the way Buddy played, and having grown up sitting in front of his bands a lot (1968 until his passing), there's a HUGE long list of things to love about him. One of the things I admire about his playing the most is something he could do on any cymbal or drum... play the WHOLE instrument, from the center to the edges, varying dynamics, kinds of rimshots, momentary muffling, and on and on. Regardless of his enormous ability, he had a way of getting a hundred sounds out of a 6-stroke roll, or something as simple. Not "playing", but "PLAYING" I sure miss him... :)

I'm 67 years old...Buddy is probably the best drummer in my lifetime....there are many greats...amateur drummer myself for over 55 years....you are the closest thing to BR I've ever seen...awesome...keep up the great work, and thanks! Yes evidently the kid had rich parents and let him practice eight hours a day for 10+ years. How do you think great guitar player's like Steve Vai, Paco De Lucía, Eddie Van etc got to be so great, saying no to their friends and staying home and practice. I went out partying in the 80s and as I got older only played maybe 8 hrs a week if that long

Clean, clear and precise. I even picked my sticks up and played along at a super high tempo of 30bpm! Yes years of practice in those hands - Buddy was a true great for sure, I've got him on my wall next to Bonham and Colaiuta, but this guy is one to watch! Thanks for the vid inspiring.

I saw Buddy in 1977 at Disneyland (CA) and got his autograph and a stick. The man is truly a “virtuoso” and no one has gotten close to his skill even 36 years after he passed away.
I must admit this young man here is very impressive.
But it's impossible to judge skill alone there so many genres of music Buddy Rich probably couldn't master. Comparing drummers like Dave Weckl & Senri Kawaguchi for just an example among others, they'll surpassed Buddy Rich. Buddy Rich only mastered jazz & big band.
There are several drummers better than Buddy today!!!

You have a very good grasp of how Buddy did things for the Impossible solos . Buddy was my "Uncle" as he lived some of the time with my Great Aunt. Buddy would do freeform solo just to relax ... At least 3hrs a day, sometimes up to 7hrs at his most frantic pace, no breaks! He had EXTREMELY particular tastes in his equipment as well as preferences in setting up the kit. He was the King of speed for several reasons. Here's one, drop down the snare so the tips of your drumsticks are about an inch above the skin, lean forward into the roll.
Buddy also worked a small kit manufactured by Swingerland of Chicago Illinois, as he found they provided a much better range of tone. This is Very important as he would create tone from exacting impact placement upon the skins. Smaller kits equal speed. So does allowing for your bodies dimensions (angles at full speed) , it's like the difference between a tailored suit done at the best level versus buying a factory 2nd from Walmart. Comfort was speed for him, don't get cramped, but rather place everything at your fingertips.

First "blast beat" was in the 60's on toms + snare. First blast beat as we know it was before this performance as well. Buddy didn't invent it.

I was lucky enough to see the Buddy Rich Big Band a couple times when he toured with Mel Torme back in the late ‘70’s. Amazing! Check out his Grammy-winning album “Together Again for the First Time” with Mel from 1978. Also recorded and released as a direct-to-disc. A true master lesson in ensemble drumming.

With that first one you forgot the juicy dynamic emphasis of him layering RL single quarter note strokes over top when hes full speed, making the main roll the ghost notes to the louder single notes

I love this kid. He not only has amazing technique, but he pulls from so many more influences than Buddy Rich had, such as funk, metal, etc. Buddy Rich was an inspiration when I was young, but he had a certain bag of tricks that he typically used. Now that I'm (much) older, I enjoy watching Greyson more than Buddy. Greyson plays with flourish and flair, without being excessively dramatic, as I feel Buddy was. He always looked like he was having a heart attack, years before he actually did.
I think the breakdown of Buddy Rich drum patterns is spot on with a few more tricks he does that could be covered in another video. However, after watching multiple Buddy Rich videos, I would point out one more thing that I believe set Buddy Rich apart from other drummers. In addition to his incredible speed and coordination, I am always equally if not more impressed with his incredible sense of timing in relation to all of the other musicians that he is playing with. His ability to enter and exit and execute incredibly complicated musical arrangements all by memory, and anticipate ahead of time each and every rift and tempo, all while closely monitoring exactly what the rest of his musicians are doing, is truly astounding. The entire Buddy Rich package is far more complicated and impressive than the breakdown of the basic drum patterns that he used. I do also want to compliment the young professional who made this video. If there is anyone who could duplicate a lifetime achievement like Buddy Rich did, it would be someone like this drum instructor. His skills are absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for this great video.
Buddy claimed he never practiced. I’m not sure if he was kidding or not, but you are exactly right about his genius for playing superb drum arrangements that were a perfect fit for the songs, elevating all of the other instrumental parts.
It was nice of him to say he couldn’t play the first lick as smooth or fast as Buddy because of course there was only one Buddy Rich and yes, I could hear the timing errors but he was pretty good. One of the things about Buddy was his stamina. Lots of the highlighted parts of his incredible sessions were after he had already been playing for half an hour keeping perfect timing with an orchestra and fatigue had already set in. It takes strength and perfect timing to sound like that. Greyson will be fine because it’s clear that he is good and cares about details. Good job sir.

Awesome playing. And your mention of illusion in some of these is spot on. Buddy's parents were Vaudevillians, and he was raised up in it. As much as he was an amazing drummer, he was an equally amazing showman.

That first lick showed Buddy Rich playing through a heart attack... it's impossible for anybody else to do that...in fact that whole solo and set after was played under cardiac duress... he's the greatest drummer of all time...
He also stated “I didn’t ply it as fast or as cleanly as buddy” yeah thats why it’s “impossible” cuz ya didn’t freakin do it. Nice try i guess

How can ya not love this young man. His dedication to the art is beyond hard work and he is a force in the drumming world! One of my favorite drummers now and yes I’m on board with anything he plays ! I’m forever learning and I can learn from Him ! Can and will ! And I’ve been playing longer than he’s been living !! He could be my son😂😂

I wouldn't even try to play Rich's stuff. He's amazing and looks like he's really having fun playing. It makes the experience even more pleasurable for the audience.
