I have been brainstorming on making quiet drums and I had a similar idea, to use a snare case as the bass. I thought of using my suitcase I happen to have a similar samsonite but didn't think of mounting a half drum with a head on it. I've got to hand it to you this is the greatest thing I've seen in a while.
thanks - I can see a lot of applications for a kit like this. You might want to discuss with a drum manufacturer or go for a patent on some of the design ideas - it's really cool. I've schlepped to a lot of gigs in my 30+ years as a gigging drummer, always looking for ways to make it easier.
Gregory, I live in an apartment, so what I like to use it for a lot is writing. If I have an idea, its nice to be able to laydown a beat to it. Its quiet enough that I can play it and not piss off my neighbors. I try to keep the playing hours between 12 and 5pm. I have used it for live gigs. My band did a promotional gig a couple weeks ago for a festival coming up outside the front of a grocery store. There were decibel concerns from the store, so I used it and brushes/hot sticks.
I noticed that your that your suitcase keeps moving every time you hit it. What you can do is put some stoppers so it wont shake(use wood or something) then you will be able to play faster and not worry about it falling. sound nice!
Oscar. Its a Samsonite. not sure the model. I just went to the local thrift shop. they had a couple of cases. I smacked this one with my fist and liked the tone. that's it. the drum head add, for me, was more of a feel added plus then tone. but it did add some tone difference then just the plastic side sound. kick pedal beater is important. I duct taped some nerf football material to mine so it would be a softer attack.
I used a dark red Samsonite Conchord suitcase. it has an amazing bass drum sound. I have a Ludwig rock Piccolo, a kids 10'' tom with a Remo ambassador head, 14" zbt hi hats, a 17'' Sabian apx crash that works as a ride as well, and a zildjian 8'' splash. Hardware includes a first act hi hat stand, and ludwig collapsible bass pedal, and some lightweight compact snare stands for the snare and tom. Everything fits inside of the suitcase including a pair of sticks, rutes, and brushes. The stool is a small kids drumset stool with some light hardwear. I also an old, smaller Samsonite Royal Traveler that I use as a simple snare-hihat-cymbal setup, using same gear.
Struggledrummer I've linked full pics below. I haven't obtained some of the equipment yet (such as the Piccolo snare, and Ambassador head) I'm getting sometime this week from a friend that works at a music shop and gets great discounts on used stuff. But this is what it would basically look like: Big Red Kit: s27.postimg.org/y7qpxcjvn/IMG_3242.jpg s27.postimg.org/sne8mpl0j/IMG_3245.jpg s27.postimg.org/ooh13vwdf/IMG_3246.jpg s27.postimg.org/liwfdodr7/IMG_3248.jpg s27.postimg.org/ru687u4df/IMG_3262.jpg Small black kit: s27.postimg.org/sshzwdsbn/IMG_3250.jpg s27.postimg.org/pj863ntlv/IMG_3253.jpg s27.postimg.org/o5gj8cucj/IMG_3255.jpg s27.postimg.org/5eely6zs3/IMG_3257.jpg s27.postimg.org/6w029r4ir/IMG_3258.jpg
Michael, the 12" drum slipped through the hole I cut, from the inside with the head and rim off, then I drilled holes in the suitcase for the lugs to go through. so the hardware on the tom is inside the suitcase and the rim is on the outside. The combination of a snug fit of the tom in the hole and tension of the rim tightening down onto the drum head gave only a small clearance between where the lugs go through the suitcase and the rim outside. I hope that is clear enough to help.
This is really cool and creative! Why not install some legs or something on the suitcase to prevent it from rocking back and forth so much, like the legs typically on a bass drum? Just an idea.
Mark Bolton in this video I did a random beat recorded the same way but I added my DIY subkick mic. Sounds nice and boomy. Adds a boost to the 60 Hz range. check it out with some headphones on or a system with a subwoofer. ruclips.net/video/IvcE-CzKgFM/видео.html
That’s the best one I have heard so far ... fantastic 👏. I would love to see how the bass drum is held in on inside . Epoxy ???? Etc thks so much for this vid ..
What I did was cut a hole in suitcase slightly smaller then the 12” Tom I was using. Then drilled holes for the rim bolts to go through. That was pretty much enough to keep it secure once the bolts were going through the holes into the hardware.
Warwick from Wazinator Australia here. We make a suitcase kick drum pickup system called the Wazinator Zombie. I'm wondering if I could send you one to try out? thanks
its a fairly dense green colored foam i found at a local craft store. I thinki paid about $20.00 for a 3 foot by 3 foot piece. it was somewhere around 2" thick. I just set the 12" tom on top of it and drew a circle on the foam with a sharpie and cut it out with a razor blade. I made it slightly oversized so the compresion of just squeezing it inside the tom and againts the head inside keeps it in there, so i didnt need any glue.
Best sound and looks that appeal to me that i have seen on RUclips so far and i have seen and heard most.I would love to put same idea of base port and drum head on a set up i plan to build. Was it expensive, if you don't mind me asking? Have you had it all inside the case and was there room for another symbal and stand perhaps? nice playing by the way, most people tend to bash on them too much for me to like.Keep it up general!
One of the best sounding suitcase kicks I've heard on RUclips. NIce job. Didn't fully understand the hinge situation to connect the pedal to the suitcase, however. A more clear video of the situation would have been helpful. Regardless, thanks for posting. Very helpful!
Your suitcase set sounds great! I'm trying to build one of these for myself right now and I've got a few questions that I hope you won't mind answering. Bass drum questions: Why'd you only go with a 12" for the bass drum? Would having a larger head produce a deeper boom or would that compromise too much of the structural integrity of the suitcase? Also, did you cut a 12" hole into the suitcase or just that smaller hole where the hammer hits? I can't easily tell. Cymbal questions: What specifically are you using for the splash hats?
thanks for your question robert. the size of the drum I installed in the suitcase was a matter of convenience then anything as I was trying to keep cost to a minimum as well as functionality. I only put the drum in the suit case for feel sake. hitting the plastic side of the Sampson item felt wierd. even tuned at its lowest point, the 11" tom still pinged and rang without that green foam. as far as instalation I just set the drum she'll on the suitcase and drew a line to cut so 12" or there abouts. I wanted the fit to be tight so I just cut the suitcase a little inside the drawn circle. the splashes I used for hats w were an 8" zildjian zht on the bottom and an 8" zildjian K hybrid on top. again, only for convenience because I had them already. plus they were small....with the idea that they would fit in the suitcase for mobility.
i had most of the hardware in my extra stash of stuff already.. the 12" and 16" cb 700 toms i butcherd i got on craigs list for $20. The bass drum pedal was the most costly but still got that used on Craigs list. I think total build cost was about $100.00 The only thing i cant fit inside the suitcase is my snare and my throne. everything else fits inside. cymbals 16# tom, bass pedal, all the hardware. So i roll the case up and i carry the snare in a case and put the throne under my arm.
I love this kit! Why did you put the high hat in the middle instead of to the left of the snare? Also, about how much would making one of these cost? My little brother would love this! Again this kit is the coolest mini/portable one Iv'e ever seen!
thanks for the comment. the high hat is really just an accessory high hat arm. no foot pedal, just a wing nut on top to adjust how open It is. so it didn't need to be on the left, I can put it anywhere. I just picked that location for fun. as far as cost... I had all of the hardware already. and cymbals. the suitcase I got at goodwill for $8.00. the Tom's I found on Craigslist for $30.00. the 4" hinge that I use to clamp the kick pedal on was $4.00 at the hardware store. thanks again for your positive comment.
Vince Cimo it was worth the trouble for me only because I wanted it to feel more like hitting a drum. depending on the suitcase, it's not a necessity. this Samsonite suitcase is plastic so the feel and the tone was not so great. the tom on the surface was an asset. I've seen others, specially old press board type suitcases, that sounded great just hitting the case alone. keep in mind a soft beater is key.
everything but my snare drum and throne. when I bring it somewhere to play, I have a soft case for my snare and I just put my throne under my arm and the suitcase is on wheels so I can drag it.
Technically it’s mounted using the hardware from the drum. The bolts from the rim go through holes I drilled into the suitcase. I used the rim as a template to mark where the holes needed to be. The tension between where the bolts go through the holes and the hardware on the drum itself were enough to keep it there in position.
Wow, impressive bass drum sound out of that suitcase!!!! Could you please tell me the exact model of it? It looks deeper than most of the suitcases I've been looking at. I'm making my suitcase drum kit and I would also like to ask you if it's worth it or not, and if it will really give me a better deep bass drum sound, to work on cutting a big hole and adding a real drumhead. Does it really make a big diference? Thanks!!!! Oscar
I love it! I am wanting to build a suitcase kick drum with perhaps a tamborine for a one woman act Im working on. Do you have any pictures of you buillding the kickdrum? I am a guitarist, so I am not too familiar with drum equiptment. If you could provide me with a detailed list of parts I would need to aquire and perhaps offer some suggestions as to where these parts might be obtained cheeply I would greatly appreciate it! :)
Tina, I went to my local thrift store and started thumping on used suitcases there until I found a tone I liked and purchased the suitcase for around $7.00. you will need to gut the suitcase of all its lining and more then likely have to apply some silicone, (find at your hardware store, in tube form), around rivets or anything metal on the inside to keep it from rattling when you hit the suitcase. You can find a used kick drum pedal on craigs list for under $50. a 4" standard metal hinge is what I used to attach the kick pedal to the suitcase. I had to mount a self adhesive pad to the hinge that I clamped the kick pedal to. (hinge, bolts and self adhesive pad, available at your local hardware box store. Lowes, Home Depot, etc...) I clamped the kick pedal to the hinge then positioned the hinge under the suitcase, in a place where I could make contact with the suitcase when using the kick, then I made a mark with a sharpie where I wanted the hinge to be mounted. I unclamped the pedal, placed the hinge on the suitcase where I had marked it, and used the sharpie to mark the holes to be drilled to mount the hinge onto the suitcase. drilled the holes then mounted the hinge with bolts, washers and lock nuts. ( the nuts with material inside the grooves that make it hard to put on without tools, hence hard to undo itself once tight.) that's about it for mounting a kick pedal. I do recommend a kick pedal with a plated bottom, it keeps the whole thing a little more sturdy then one without a plate. I bought a PDP brand off of craig's list for $25.00 with a plated bottom and it has Velcro which helps it stay put on a mini rug I put down first. that allowed me to eliminate the need for any kind of mounted stability hardware attached to the suitcase. (swing out bass drum legs, etc..) The suitcase moves a little when I kick it, but it doesn't effect the feel for me. Hope this helps some.
How did you mount the piece of tom shell into the hole cut out in the suitcase? I see you've bolted the rim but what holds the actual shell in place in the suitcase? Or is it just the rim pressing down that holds it in place? Thanks! Looks awesome.
Lance, i drilled holes in the suitcase and put all the bolts through the holes before screwing them into the hardware. So the shell floats in the hole. I hope that makes sense.
Ah so on the inside there's another rim and tom skin? So it's like the world's thinnest drum floating between the hole and the bolds squeeze and hold it all in place?
This is really great. The tone you got out of that twelve inch head is really solid. I just have one question: if that’s an exterior hi hat, what’s an interior hi hat?
@@CaptainErn I used the shell to draw a line for location and confirmed the size with a ruler. Then I drilled a hole just inside the line and used a jigsaw to cut the circle out.
Installing leg braces was going to be an afterthought/add on, Tyleralli, but after playing it for a while, it didn't effect the feel of the kick, or did the suitcase slide at all. My kick pedal has Velcro on the bottom and spurs so the kick never really walked, So I decided to just leave it as is.
Anonymous Dirtbag ask's what the dimensions of the suitcase are... I cant reply on his question because its linked, but I will put that here. 20" High by 28" wide x 10" deep.
yeah, i didnt spend enough time on the build. i probably should have taken some pictures during the assembly. The hinge is a 4" door hinge you can get at any local hardward store. I mounted it underneath by drilling holes in the suitcase and using bolts and lock nuts. Then glued a 1" piece of hard rubber onto the part that was not bolted on so the pedal had something to bite on to. hope that helps.
This is really awesome! And not just the suitcase but great projection on that sawed off floor tom with the brushes. What kinda brushes/ heads you use? Great work!
Mike Fusco I can’t remember where I got those brushes, although I do remember them being designed for slightly louder use then normal brushes. The heads are Evans g1’s I believe. Thanks for the comment!
I think this is very creative :-) congraats. If there something that could bother me a little bit is the suitcase kind of going back and forth, I think you should find a way to stabilize it. Keep up the good work :-) this is dope maan :-)
yeah, it looks kind of out of control when I'm kicking it, but it feels solid and it doesn't shift at all, so I decided not to add any more weight to it by adding feet. I got past the rocking it does only because of those reasons, and I thought anything I add to it now I have to find a place to carry inside, or mount to the case itself. So, I'm ok with it.
Struggledrummer Thanks for posting this. Lot's of fun. I'm a guitarist by trade and just mess around with percussion, but I put together something along this vein a little while back. I tried a hinge first and found that it rocked back and forth quite a bit. Went to a local discount store and for a couple of buck bought a small polypropylene kitchen cutting board. Cut it down to a manageable size and screwed it onto the bottom of the suitcase. (Use flat top screws and countersink them so they won't scratch the floor.) It maintains a nice stiffness and serves as a good anchor for the bass pedal. Also rigged up some "toms" using a couple of Stanton Moore pandeiros I found on clearance at Guitar Center. Attached them to a cymbal stand with an LP clamp and tuned them in descending intervals. Several drummer friends have played the rig and the consensus is - looks cool, sounds great, lots of fun to play. Oh yeah - also, got some Dream Bliss 12" hi hats. I play this rig sometimes using broomsticks to accompany acoustic guitar jams. Perfect volume. Use sticks instead and you could drive a small trio if they're at a low volume. (Perfect for old farts like me. :-) ) If this is of interest to anyone and you want more details, add a reply and I'll do my best to help.
Well if you find a really small snare or thinner (I don't know how it doesn't fit) and find a different way of mounting cymbals and that tom, you might be able to fit everything inside the suitcase... good luck with that. The idea is just great... love it! :)
hey Michael thanks for the ignorant comment. I own 3 drum sets. this is a video about a do it yourself suitcase drum kit. are you lost? judging by your comment you maybe didn't get that part. anyway...good luck with therapy. they might need to up your meds.
+Struggledrummer How funny things .... I of Brazil turned on the video talking about suitcase drum ... here comes an ignorant idiot make a comment like that ...

Nice unique kick sound. Love it when people can ghetto something together that is small, cheap, and sounds great. Good on ya.
Thanks man. I also love when something fun comes out positive. Peace.
this is the best one ive seen from my youtube searching. seriously love it. im gonna use this for inspiration for sure!

the bass drum sound so cool, a little stabilizer for the suit case and its almost perfect, you did a great job on this kit :)
Thank you Blackship 14
Wow you really got a nice bass response out of this. I might have to pull out my old suitcase kit for nostalgia!
Great Job !!! Love the bass quality ... I just built one too - lotta fun !!!

If you could provide me with a detailed list of parts I would need to aquire and perhaps offer some suggestions as to where these parts might be obtained cheeply I would greatly appreciate it! :)
Tina,
I went to my local thrift store and started thumping on used suitcases there until I found a tone I liked and purchased the suitcase for around $7.00. you will need to gut the suitcase of all its lining and more then likely have to apply some silicone, (find at your hardware store, in tube form), around rivets or anything metal on the inside to keep it from rattling when you hit the suitcase.
Thanks G.

Ill take a pic and put a link up in a bit. Be easier to see.
Struggledrummer Awesome. That would be so great. Thanks.

This is really great. The tone you got out of that twelve inch head is really solid. I just have one question: if that’s an exterior hi hat, what’s an interior hi hat?
I think my terminology might be a miss. Lol. I think I meant to say extension high hat. Thanks for your post.
@@Struggledrummer haha I’m just joshing ya! I do have a really question though. What method did you use to get the kick drum cut out?
@@CaptainErn I used the shell to draw a line for location and confirmed the size with a ruler. Then I drilled a hole just inside the line and used a jigsaw to cut the circle out.
@@Struggledrummer nice! That means I don’t need to buy any new tools! Thanks for the reply. Great sense of community!
Cool ah...bass drum does sounds good
thanks.
Anonymous Dirtbag ask's what the dimensions of the suitcase are... I cant reply on his question because its linked, but I will put that here. 20" High by 28" wide x 10" deep.
cool. yeah it was an easy application. hope it works for you.
yeah, i didnt spend enough time on the build. i probably should have taken some pictures during the assembly.
If this is of interest to anyone and you want more details, add a reply and I'll do my best to help.
After cutting the suitcase to fit the drum in it, how did you secure the two pieces together?
I would install some light weight bass drum spurs from Gibraltar to give the case more stability.. ;)
yes, everything breaks down and fits inside the suitcase but my snare drum and throne. which I just carry as I pull the suitcase on wheels.
Thanks for the positive comment. glad you liked it.
Incidentally, does this really all fit in the suitcase?
Hi ... How did I fix the rim and the skin on suitecase ...
thanks Wes
that odd whistle is just me. hehe :o) thanks for your comment.
Thanks man.
How heavy is it in the case when you pack it all down ?
Its pretty heavy. But the case is on wheels, so its not bad to drag around.
were you using R24 when recorded this?
Yes.
your stuff is fits in the suitcase?
@ Noah... Thanks man.
yes sir.
it is a ZXT Trashformer. Adam, above is right.
does it all fit inside the suitcase?
everything but the snare drum and the seat part of the throne.
Well if you find a really small snare or thinner (I don't know how it doesn't fit) and find a different way of mounting cymbals and that tom, you might be able to fit everything inside the suitcase... good luck with that. The idea is just great... love it! :)
What are the orange and red things I forgot what the name was
jam blocks.
Probably a ZXT Trashformer.
What if you had 2 suitcases...
then id give you one man.
Buy a fucking drumset
hey Michael thanks for the ignorant comment.
