I love how Disneyland Paris entwines big thunder mountain into the haunted mansion narrative it builds up both of the attractions and you don't really have this connection in the other parks.

It's a nice mixture of Davy Jones' Flying Dutchman and the appearance it took (according to the legend) when Willem van der Decken left port on Easter Sunday against all rules, making the sails turn red and dooming him and the ship to sail for all eternity

I kinda liked the original story a little more.
The father killed the groom, but died in the Earthquake and cursed the town. Then the bride waited for her groom, or until you came a long and told her what the phantom told you, the phantom killed the groom. So to save you, the bride sacrifices herself, to banish this evil.

Always dreamt to take a ride through the Phantom Manor which I finally did two days ago. It was purely magical in a horrific manner. I wasn't disappointed at any bit ! I can confidently assert that this is the best looking and the most atmospheric haunted manor themed ride out of all the others. The storyline, the lights effects, the phantom animatronic (which was terrifying), the gorgeous great hall, the haunting song as well as the wonderful use of screens and projectors created such a wonderful otherworldly ride. That was so delightful. I was so sad when the ride ended, I hope to be able to go back there again.
Our French Phantom Manor is even more scarier and spookier than your Haunted Mansion

The real ride is sitting down for a drink with that older gentleman with the lantern. He tells you about old Parisian history, while you get completed hammered.

I’ve only ever been on the Haunted Mansion at Disney World, but I love the clear storyline and characters throughout this version! I hope to go ride it myself someday!
I really want to applaud the acting in the beginning and end. Even when the guests were laughing, they stayed in character really well!! At Disney World when I went, some of the cast members stayed in character, while others didn't, which I felt like lessoned the experience I had by just a little bit. But anyway, I'm very impressed by these cast members!! Good job!!!

All of the new effects look freaking great! I know some people are not happy with the audio changes but overall this is the the refresh the ride needed
My Thoughts on the Refurbished Phantom Manor:
1. The exterior of the manor is absolutely gorgeous! It could just be the colorful lighting effects, but man, does it look great!
2. I do like the additional actors and actresses before entering the ride, especially the one actress playing as Melanie Ravenswood. I'm sure that this is only for the opening nights, but if the Imagineers keep this up, I feel they would make the attraction more interactive.
3. YAAASSS!!! THEY BROUGHT VINCENT PRICE BACK!!!
4. The effects in the Foyer are amazing. The slow transformation of the painting and wallpaper to creepy and decrepit to normal was flawless! It was like as if we were being sent back in time as our Ghost Host tells the tale of the manor.
10/10, would recommend.
5. The Stretching Room was one of the changes I was really excited about, and this did not disappoint. I really liked the part where Melanie fades away from all of the portraits before it was revealed on how her suitors' met their untimely demise. If any of you didn't know, here are all the ways her suitors had died:
- The first one was mauled by bears (this portrait was shown before Opening Night)
- The second one was blown into bits by TNT (very similar to the Haunted Mansion)
- The third one was sawed in half by a buzzsaw (DAMN, DISNEY!)
- The fourth one fell down from a waterfall (very similar to the original Phantom Manor)
6. I had to check another video for this part, but I think the Phantom is still hanging the original groom up in the ceiling. This is great because it's such an iconic moment in Phantom Manor. Plus, that means he killed FIVE men (unless the other deaths were just out of bad luck)!
7. Again, the effects are really good! The paintings in the Hallway are stunning to see; the dueling partners one was actually pretty gruesome (plus another Haunted Mansion reference).
8. The Loading Room... my god, is it beautiful! The refurbishments really made Phantom Manor really colorful, didn't they? Not that I have a problem with that.
9. Before the refurbishments, the Endless Hallway was a dark, creepy illusion where Melanie would linger endlessly as she disappears from sight. Now it seems that Melanie isn't alone...
10. It was mentioned earlier by Tom Fitzgerald that the Phantom is playing the piano, surrounded by the memorial flowers of his daughter's suitors. Maybe he's celebrating the fact that Melanie isn't leaving the manor? Either way, another great effect!
11. Not much to say about Madame Leota, except for the fact that her table is now floating. Maybe the Imagineers felt like there wasn't much to redo?
12. Okay, so A LOT of commenters have been complaining about how the ballroom music has been changed to the Haunted Mansion version. Honestly, this doesn't really bother me that much! I understand the whole thing about the refurbishments "making things less unique" and whatnot, but as I can tell there haven't been too many changes in the Ballroom (except for Melanie and the Phantom, I think).
13. The Bride's Boudoir. Now I have mixed feelings with this scene. It looks a lot better with the refurbishment, but I do miss the skull mirror effect the original ride had before. On the other hand, I am curious as to how the Imagineers put the Phantom in the mirror...
14. NEW ANIMATRONICS (some of them anyway)!!!
15. The Ghost Town is friggin' cool! It's colorful, it's fun, it's creepy! This entire scene just screams "The dead have come back to Thunder Mesa!"
16. DID I MENTION NEW ANIMATRONICS?!
17. Now, the grand finale! Well... sort of... Again, like the Ballroom situation, fans have also complained about Melanie's new "personality shift." When I first found out about the refurbishments in that Tom Fitzgerald video, I figured that the whole creepy "Will you marry me?" thing was Melanie's descent into madness. I figured that, after all these years, Melanie has finally lost her mind - desperate for love and longing for release. I thought that she'd still be the tragic figure we know and love. I looked through another video and replayed this scene; Melanie doesn't look menacing, but her voice does. Maybe I was right? The biggest problem I have with this change was that it turned a scene where we find the skeletal corpse of Melanie herself into the same mirror effect found at the Haunted Mansion (you know, like the one with the Hitchhikers?). The original scene was so epic, why did they change it into this? It could have been much cooler if they have shown Melanie as an animatronic skeleton hovering over the guests and reaching out towards them as she insanely laughs! Now THAT would have been much better! MISSED OPPORTUNITY!
Ayla Crawford Here’s a couple of points I would like to mention; in the stretching room the Phantom is holding an empty noose, the groom is no longer there. Madame Leota’s table was floating before the refurbishment, nothing new here unfortunately.
I particularly love how he switches what he’s playing on the piano. One minute it’s grim grinning ghosts next it’s here comes the bride. I particularly love the transition to that because it’s like he’s taunting her AND us.
I live in Florida and I am extremely green with envy for this version of the Haunted Mansion. The portraits, the storyline, the bride, the creepy music, the narration. Bucket list LOLOLOLOLOL(creepy echoing laughter.)
Original ballroom soundtrack has officially returned for public opening! I think the HM music was either exclusive to the soft opening or they actually listened to the people's complains XD
I wonder if maybe the sound got damaged somehow and they had to use the regular HM music until they got the Phantom Manor soundtrack from the Disney Archives or something.

Love how the phantom switches between playing the score and here comes the bride. It’s rather creepy and gives off a sense of tragedy.

Even though a lot of people are not happy with the refurb, because of the audio, or the lack of change, I still think it is a good refurb as you don't lose the essence of the story and the vibe of the ride. I also think the ride needed to be modernize as the special effects were getting quite old, and DLP managed to do so. Plus, now people who don't know the story about Melanie and more generally about Thunder Mesa can understand it better, thanks to the paintings in the stretch room mainly.
I love both versions and they are not comparable to me. I am very glad to be able to have know the 1st version which, fortunately we have some videos on YT of it.
Definitely my fav ride, entirely created by the imagineers and not inspired by any franchise.
Can't wait to try it next time I go to DLP !

Whoa the new portraits are so cool!! I am a bit surprised but they did really well!! The effects are also lovely
Good things about the refurb:
- The lighting is MUCH better throughout - probably the most major thing that needed improving.
- The animatronics are smoother.
- The new foyer effect sets the scene more clearly.
- The disappearing Melanie effect in the paintings is clever and effective.
- You can see the Phantom more clearly during the lightning effect in the stretch room.
- There are pictures of Henry Ravenswood - this was needed to convey the story more clearly.
- Melanie on the stairs makes in the loading scene is more interesting and creepy.
- The audio for the singing busts finally syncs up properly.
Bad things about the refurb:
- The Haunted Mansion music throughout is TERRIBLE. This is by far the most glaring issue. It doesn’t fit at all and they must change it back to the original Phantom Manor soundtrack immediately.
- They have changed the story. It did NOT need changing. It just needed to be made clearer. A big mistake.
- All the mystery is lost now that we know the exact identity of Phantom.
- The wallpaper lighting in the foyer looks too bright.
- Melanie now has four fiancés which makes her story much less tragic.
- The constant changing between French and English is very choppy.
- The new dialogue in the stretching room means that the lightning effect at the end doesn’t sync up with the music.
- The new paintings in the stretch room do not look as authentic as the old ones.
- The lightning effect in the portrait gallery doesn’t make sense as there is no window for the lightning to pass through. It would have worked better as morphing paintings.
- The comedy knight near the beginning of the ride doesn’t fit the atmosphere at all. They should have kept the Melanie animatronic as this set up the story nicely and was the only time you got to see her close up.
- The way the Phantom is constantly behind Melanie throughout the entire ride is over the top. All the mystery and subtlety is lot.
- The Seance room has had no new effects added.
- The loss of the “All is Vanity” reference in the boudoir is disappointing when you consider that it has been replaced by yet another “oh look, the Phantom is right behind her!” moment.
- The red lights in the Phantom’s eyes are cheesy. He was creepier and more mysterious with dark eyes.
- They have kept all of the cheap cardboard cut outs in the background of the Phantom Canyon scene. This was something that really needed improving and it’s disappointing to see they haven’t done anything with it.
- The Haunted Mansion dialogue coming from the Mayor doesn’t fit at all and it sounds choppy.
- The removal of the creepy Melanie skeleton at the end is disappointing when it has been replaced with an uninteresting hand sticking out of a hole.
- Melanie has turned into some sort of psychotic witch at the end. She loses all her innocence and we lose sympathy for her and her story.
- The loss of little Leota.
- And finally, because it’s worth saying again, THE MUSIC. Bring back John Debney’s score for the entire ride.
JACoaster sadly there’s way more cons than pros. Yikes Disney.
The mayor has always spouted clips of Paul Frees' narration. This is nothing new, they just improved it a bit. Same deal with the phantom appearing behind Melanie, that's always been a thing.
The mayor always had those dialogues from the Haunted Mansion. They just added some lines.
I think you nailed it. Ultimately, I think they toned down the Gothic Horror that Phantom Manor in particular excelled at. It was completely macabre in comparison to the Haunted Mansions. The first and last encounters with the bride, which were both removed, were especially essential in showing the tragedy of the bride. In the original, the Phantom's appearance changes too, from an elegant skeletal figure to a repulsive corpse by his final appearance. Here, he looks the same in all appearances. Whereas the Haunted Mansions go from spooky to silly, Phantom Manor has always gone from hopeful to grim. It seems the tonal progression is flat now with the Phantom just following her around the house. The bride also seems to lack agency in this version until that oddly placed bit at the end.
appleguyforeternity I don’t remember hearing the Paul Frees’ narration before, and looking at a couple of old POVs, I can’t hear it there either? Regardless, I think the audio of those lines is too loud and distracting now.

I feel like the original version being old and ran down made it more creepy. They should left it as it was. Some of the new elements are good. But the story should’ve stayed the same.
I've only ridden the haunted mansion in florida and phantom manor in Paris and I have t osay I've always preferred the Paris version. It's just way more eerie. The house looks amazing from the outside, the queue area is so well themed and compared to the haunted mansion, the grand staircase foyer style loading area is absolutely breath taking.

Wow! What a fantastic video and what a magnificent reworking of the ride! Some really impressive new effects, and how cool to hear Vincent Price's dialogue back again, particularly with lots of original snippets that I've never heard before!
Right from when I was little, Phantom Manor has always been special to me, and it inspired me to make my own little animated walkthrough experiences for Halloween! I can't wait until the day I can see the newly rebooted Phantom Manor myself at the park! Congratulations to the team involved with the reworking and thanks so much for filming and uploading!

Phantom Manor isn't meant to scare you, just tell you a story in a special athmosphere. I hear too much people complaining that the attraction isn't scary enough but they didnt understand it...
It's a macabre drama of love and tragedy.

Thanks so much, this is definitely the clearest video yet. I love what they've done tbh. Yes, I do prefer the previous version with its more moody, romantic and subtle tone but I can't deny that this is, well, just better objectively speaking, and that this version will be far more pleasing for today's visitors and for upcoming generations. The new effects are all fantastic, the story makes sense and I think it leaves a better impression upon exiting. Very well done, Disney. Now let's get some actually new rides in the park.

I freaking love it!
All of the updates are great but the ballroom scene is a down for me. I don't like that they used the Haunted Mansion music instead of Phantom Manor's own (the aesthetic of the scene saved it though) but hey, I like the way that they dug deeper about the mysterious story of Melanie and the Phantom alone.
Still my favorite ride at Disneyland Paris!

It is in fact a woman named Constance Hatchaway.
In layman's terms, she is the complete and total OPPOSITE of Melanie!
I am dead serious when I say that!
Think about it: The Phantom grew tired of Melanie's pure heart, so he killed her off, adopted Constance as his own daughter, and now, he's watching her massacre countless innocent pure-hearted men just for his own form of entertainment!
Believe me when I say this: This is a "WIN-WIN" situation for "The Phantom"!
Not only is his newly adopted "daughter" completely in love with him, but she's also just as sick and twisted as he is!
If you don't know who Constance Hatchaway is, then dear god, you MUST check out her backstory!

I keep expecting to hear the phantom begin to cough and splutter after laughing too much. I've watched too many irreverent cartoons lol. But that aside I feel they've made this ride into a much more cohesive story and aesthetic. They've done a great job.

Also my thoughts: I love the new changing portraits, I love how they added many more Phantom appearances, but... I still like the old ending better with the Phantom burying you alive, then the skeleton of Melanie (the bride) showing you the way out, followed up by the spirit of the Phantom trying to grab you (seen in the mirrors) before you disembark.
This ride has barely changed in 20 years, that's amazing. I last went in 2000 and aside from a few minor details it was basically the same.

Personally, I like this ride better than the two in America, judging by this video. I haven't been to Disney World in a few years, so maybe the ride has been upgraded. I would love to visit DLP!

I suggest that everyone who is upset about the Haunted Mansion music being in Phantom Manor go complain about it to Guest Relations or any of the Imagineers who worked on this if you see them. I agree it was a weird choice that makes Phantom Manor less unique and the Haunted Mansion music just doesn't fit in with Phantom Manor. It doesn't match the theme of tragedy or lost love and it doesn't flow with the orchestral soundtrack that occupies the rest of the attraction.

I don't like how they changed the story. It's supposed to be a tale of lost true love and a constant fight between good and evil, not a woman's descendence to madness. I wanted to go on the original Phantom Manor for years because of its uniqueness compared to the other mansions, now I never will unless many others want the original story, music and portraits back as much as I do.
I implore everyone who is unhappy with the audio to speak to guest relations, or to tweet it to the Disneyland Paris twitter account. It's just such a glaring issue

The whole park is a disappointment. It is not clean nor well maintained. People smoke like chimneys, the paint is fading and peeling, ugh. Disney should cut it loose.

niteowl365 um, no. I’ve been to Disneyland Paris every single year for the last, I don’t know, 8 years of my life? I look forward to it every single year and it is amazing. Yeah sure, other disney parks might have more lands and rides, but this park is lovely and it is in a no different state than the other parks. They have had insane amounts of refurbishment over the past four years, including big thunder mountain, pirates of the Caribbean, it’s a small world, this ride etc, and there’s even an amazing Ratatoullie ride that other parks don’t even have. They’re also constantly painting everything including small things like lampposts, I’ve seen things being painted every single year, so please, don’t go saying that they put no effort into the parks. And the smoking problem? They have smoking areas provided. They can’t just magically click their fingers so everyone will go there, people are oblivious and that’s not Disney’s fault. And not everyone smokes. It’s not like other Disney parks don’t have people who are constantly smoking anyway, so please don’t put a bad reputation onto the park because it’s the only park me and my family can get to easily. geostorm I would say that many of DLP's problems can be attributed to Disney themselves, as they spent next to no money on it up until Project Sparkle. I'm glad times have changed and things are better now!

I'm so so so SO GLAD they implemented the Vincent Price narration for the 2019 refurb!! I have been a lifelong fan of Vincent Price (literally from the first time I saw the re-airing/re-broadcast of Scooby-Doo and the 13 Ghosts waaaaaay back when Cartoon Network was first starting out, and they had purchased all the old Hanna-Barbera catalogue, as well as the old Warner Bros catalogue with Looney Toons and Merry Melodies for their brand new channel), so when I discovered the story of the Phantom Manor attraction fifteen years ago and learned that they had gotten Vincent Price to be their Ghost Host and ended up not using any of it except for a few sinister cackles for the Phantom... oh boy I was so upset! 🤣
I'm definitely the kind of person who will watch some mid to terrible crap if an actor I really like is in it, so I remember watching a bunch those old B-movies from the 1960s based off some Edgar Allen Poe stories just because Vincent Price was in them, and I even watched that terrible TV movie/special of The Brady Bunch going on vacation in Hawaii and finding that cursed tiki statue that wrecks havoc on the person who has possession of it solely because Vincent Price played the pseudo antagonist in it, and I remember being so frightened by the transformation scene in Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video - because while I did have a childhood fear of werewolves, it was the actual transformation scenes themselves that I was really freaked out by, but I'd usually change the channel and wait for that part to be over if VH1 would air the extended version of the music video with the movie theatre date at the beginning, and would change it back after five minutes because I knew Vincent Price did the narration/"rap" for the song and that was what I was more interested in as a kid than the song itself! 😂
Long story short: Vincent Price is an international treasure! Anything you put him in immediately improves in quality because of his presence and justice has prevailed with the restoration of his Ghost Host narration for Phantom Manor! 😂 (Seriously though, I'm really happy Disney added his narration back in along with the French version, seeing as how it was one of - if not THE last project he worked on before his passing! That's amazing to me!)

AziaXtremeInphinity I totally agree. The music was my favorite parts of the ride even though I personally haven’t rode Phantom Manor myself. Phantom Manor would have been perfect with it’s original sound track.
Wow! They did way more than bringing back Vincent Price’s narration! I will miss those old painting but the new ones are really cool!!!!

Best Video and Editing Yet, we can finally see everything clearly! All the new effects are actually amazing! Even tho I will miss the more mysterious and tragic old version I have to admit that the story makes more sense for new visitors. Will definetly miss the old music and old story with the thunder bird, the mysterious phantom...

@@bobbyboo1478 The bride has now 4 suitors while before she had only one she was going to marry and that disapeared the day of the wedding. As so the story was way more tragic and sad, now it is just a black widow thing, the guest is the new suitor and the bride is now evil
@@augusted9619 I don't think she's a Black widow. She didn't kill the suitors, her dad did. Because of this she got crazy which is why she sounds evil near the end. My interpretation of course but I don't get the Black widow vibe like the bride in the haunted mansion
@@nospeedboundaries You may be right 🤔 because in the stretching room instead of the hanged husband there is now a hook hold by the Phantom. I got the black widow vibe because of all the husband that desapeared, like in the Constance Hatchaway story. They really tried to put HM elements with the music and sound effects in the corridor with doors for example

Out of all the movies Disney made based on their theme park rides/attractions, I'm surprised they never did one of this! This would've made a way more interesting movie than Eddie Murphy's Haunted Mansion
