I normally hate when Disney just launches projections and lights on things to make them look "cooler", it just seems really cheap to me, but I think that they really did make this way more incredible. I personally love the stretching room and the new portraits in the hallway.
They really aren't just launching projections. Projection mapping can be hit or miss but an improved lighting package can make the world of a difference especially with dark rides
What are you talking about?? Lighting can make a complete diference when it comes to dark rides. when they add projections and lighting they are usually bringing a whole new dimension to the scene. I recommend you watch the Hogwarts light show. at the beginning when the show hasn't started yet there are still projections on the castle that make it look like the moon is shining on the castle while in reality its just projected effect.
I agree with Katie. Sometimes they add project mapping to rides and it kills the vibe of an attraction. Alice in Wonderland at Disneyland is an example. I feel like it’s too much projection, and I’d rather have the original ride back.
However for Phantom Manor, these digital enhancements really are a fantastic addition that add to the vibe of this attraction.
Aaron Adrian What ruined Alice in wonderland was the complete abuse of black lights
@@holisticcritic9267 Agreed. I remember pre-digital projections in the Magic Kingdom version and all the faces looked stretched and ridiculous. Still, this version somehow feels cheaper even though I know it must have cost a fortune for each room.
Really bummed that they removed the nod to the illustration “all is vanity”, when Melanie is looking at her reflection in the attic. It was such a fantastic image. Other than that, I love most of the changes and now the story really shines through.
Wrenchy boy Not Really, Constance is someone who murdered for money while Melanie is being tortured by her fathers spirit until she dies
I hope they put some light fog on the mirror in the shape of a skull.
Like don't have the All is Vanity as the whole thing, just make a clear skull shape that we see the phantom behind.
Wow. When you put them side to side you can really see how much they changed. I like most of the changes. The only thing I didn’t like was the ballroom music change because the original felt more darker and sinister which fit the ride but the normal Haunted Mansion music makes it feel more like the other mansions around the world.
The Gamer of Knowledge So good news, they changed the ballroom music back to how it was.
Is it just me or the 2017 version was a lot scarier and or darker?
It was darker, but the animatronics are FAR superior and creepier...but I'm disappointed that they STILL have yet to do anything effects wise to the painting hanging in the Ballroom of the Manor itself, it's just...THERE with no reason for it to be, what a missed chance to show a skull form over the house itself, or have it go from beautiful and new to old and scary with ghosts flying around it, etc...
Other than that, VERY glad to see that they dropped he 'double Melanies' (one RIGHT before the Endless Hallway in the original version, then she is seen immediately afterwards in said hall, that never seemed right) and they changed the inexplicable 'trio of Phantoms' that used to be featured in the mirrors as the Hitchhiking Ghost effect and have now created a creepy twist, having Melanie asking you to marry her as she appears in your Doom Buggy, just like the original effect...;)
I like the original one!
The lighting feels so much more immersive and cinematic. I love that the paris version is so much darker story and design wise.
100% disagree. If you stop the video at any scene you can see that the new led lights are way to bright and the colors looks typical RGB fake. The lighting is horrible.
@@patrickmuhlbeyer9262I was just there and you're wrong. It's much darker in person, the camera is just adding brightness.
I’m sad there’s less of a focus on Melanie now. She’s always fascinated me as a character. I’m glad the narration is available in more languages though!
Why did they remove Melanie at 4:40 in the new version??? It was such a nice touch she welcomed guests in her house like that, and her animatronic was gorgeous. Where is she???
I think they moved her onto the stairs at the beginning of the ride
@@salreacts7822 The stairs are actually not as tall as one may think, the Greeting Bride would probable be too large to be on them.
I can’t see it very well, but she may have been repurposed on the stairs when you get on.
Logically speaking, it made little sense to see Melanie, then round a corner and immediately see her in the endless hallway. Having her just in the hallway after seeing her on the stairs emphasises that she isn't a welcoming presence, but a mourning bride searching for someone who was taken from her.
MissFlow in the ballroom scene I think
I’ll try to keep my list of likes and dislikes for the refurbishment as short as possible:
-New painting effects before, during, and after the stretching room.
*Big Like*
-Adding the bride at the top of the stairs in the Foyer (loading area) and new lightning effects in Foyer.
*Big Like*
-Replacing bride animatronic with Knight’s armor *Heavily Dislike*
-Changing dining room music to the one used in the Haunted Mansion. *Heavily Dislike*
-Phantom standing directly behind bride. *Somewhat indifferent*
-Replacing bride’s skull mirror with a regular mirror. *Dislike*
-Adding more lighting on the Phantom and giving him red eyes. *Dislike*
-Updated lighting and animatronics in town scene. *Like*
-Last Phantom animatronic in the ride. *Somewhat indifferent*
-Removing bride’s last appearance in showing you the way out with insane bride in mirror. *Heavily Dislike*
Please could somebofy tell me what the new stretching portraits are as I can't quire make them out? Thanks.
Annie Spencer At 1:35 the lady begins to disappear from all of the paintings, the paintings then expand, which is the original effect. After leaving the gallery, the paintings in the hallway have updated effects.
@@venomz8888 Thank you for this.
I honestly like the red eyes in the Phantom. Although I do wish the lighting on the HellHound was slightly dimmer.
actually it isn't a "normal" mirror as if you look closely you can clearly see the Phantom standing behind the bride in the mirror
For the most part I liked the lighting changes, however it looks like you removed the ghost bride standing with flowers and replaced her with a knight unless the scenes just weren't matching up. I liked her standing there and wish she had stayed. I think it was central to the story. . Yes, the original dance music from the ballroom was very speical and now it is gone sadly.. There were some other small things, but it was mostly good changes.
Seems to me they took the one where the Knight is now and put her on the stairacse is the loading room. Haunted Mansion is my favorite ride (when I went in 2017 I rode it 3 times. Got to introduce my 3 yes old niece to my favorite ride) but I have never ridden the phantom Manor so I don't have a special attachment to her like a lot of people commenting here do, but I can understand some of the disappointment.
not gonna lie im kinda sad about this. the only updates that really excite me are the new portraits and melanie on the stairs in the loading area. the original storyline and score will be dearly missed. it would’ve been nice to see some updates to the technology and effects without the unnecessary story change.
I think the new phantom animatronic at the end is amazing. Sad that the old story with the big thunder mountain is changed and the fact that there is too much light.
- Change the ballroom music back
- Make it a little darker and less colorful
- Don't make her insane at the end, change her voice to a very sad woman who just wants to find peace again.
I'll be happy after this, it looks nicely refurbished.
Have to say I disagree with everything you want altered, and love the NEW improved versions instead...to each his own?...;)
@@KarstensCreationsKC well everyone has an opinion, I agree with him too....
I really dislike the removal of the original music from the ballroom scene, terrible decision. What were they thinking?
Also I don't like the new storyline with the many suitors, before it was a sad love story, Melanie was in love, now she just seems insane and desperate to marry anyone.
Other than that...most of the new effects and lighting look good.
Well in all fairness, in this story her father is constantly sabotaging any opportunity she has to be free and happy with someone she loves. Anyone would eventually break, especially since she was literally about to walk down the aisle and escape his grip for good. It makes it more sad and tragic for me.
Oh my god !! WHAT were they thinking!!!Why didnt they leave Melanie in the beginning!! Now it is a knight????WHYYYYYYY?????And the music in the ballroom???????????????????????????😪 and the dancing couples goin to fast !!!! The story was mysterious with Melanie looking for her husband! AND NOW SHE BECOME INSAAAANEEE😢😢😢😢😢
Im sure all we hate that changes! -.- they ruined the ballroom it was my favorite scene and soundtrack
Yeah I hate how Melanie is just another Constance clone. She's supposed to be a tragic character not a villain which really ruins her imo.
@@negavenom i agreeeee 😢why oh why🤬
What a missed opportunity this refurbishment is.
Most people don't realize how many effects have slowly vanished and broken down over the years since opening day, thanks to the notorious French maintenance policy, that made the attraction even more of a masterpiece. Just to begin with, there used to be smoke everywhere: in the piano parlor, behind the busts in the catacombs, all over the ghost town and especially coming out of lighted cracks coming from the earthquake (which they now got rid off all together) and behind Melanie's skeleton when she points the way out; the sky in the ghost town used to have a storm effect with hellfire-like effects behind the decayed phantom, while white 'Night on Bald Mountain-esque' spirits flew all around the ghost town, disappearing towards the little manor on top of the exit (now changed to a inspiration less night sky, making the scene way more tame and unconcerned about telling a backstory); when the hitchhiking phantom disappeared from your doombuggy in the final mirror, there was a smoke and lightning effect; upon entering the loading area, flashes of lightning would make all the candles go out for a few seconds, until they lighted again out of themselves. The atmosphere, that luckily never completely left thanks to the amazing soundtrack, was even more creepy and really stayed with you for a while after exiting the ride. But even the hypnotizing soundtrack that would lead you through the manor has been cut in pieces, removing Melanie's sad singing in most parts, something that made the original so captivating. If they just would have put 100% of all these original effects back, and maybe just add new paintings and modern lighting, this refurbishment could have astonished new guest and old fans of the ride, by just digging back into and using everything there aleady used to be.
Sadly it has now become a big self-glorification of Tom Fitzgerald and his love for the american mansions and the 'innovative' Walt Disney Company, shoving their newest technology down everyone's throat, while the most successful of all the Disney Parks sits in Tokyo, which they do not own and where they maintain their rides in their original form while making sure they're technique stays in perfect condition.
So just to you, Tom, Phantom Manor is NOT the Haunted Mansion and if you didn't get that before you started this refurbishment, you just should have kept you're wicked little claws away from our beloved Ravenswood estate.
I LOVE that they finally added Vincent Price's original narration back into the attraction. I believe that it was only used for a brief time when the park opened in 1992. I've been listening to it since the Haunted Mansion 30th Anniversary CD came out in 1999, which, by the way, was the year we visited DLP!.
Thanks for this side-by-side look at the changes. Frankly, I’m a little underwhelmed and was expecting more with it being closed for so long.
Agreed
That's because it's in France and they don't work very hard 😏
@@jonny5777 what? Shut up man
SandraFrancisca the truth hurts
@@jonny5777 your "truth" isn't mine. And your "truth" is based on nothing but prejudices
The Phantom part at 7:25 is better in the old version, it's more spooky and scary with the lightening.
yes!! i agree
Thank you for creating a side by side! I've never been to Disneyland Paris, but I love how phantom manor is it's own story (Different from the US parks). But, I don't understand why they made Melanie evil? I mean, the poor girl was grieving in the original version! I guess they thought more people would like phantom manor if they took inspiration from the US parks??? Who knows.
I think she’s not evil, she just began crazy.
@@gabrielmassoc5631 that's actually a very good theory
And (for the people who doesn’t understand) the story is exactly the same, they just reveal that Melanie had others fiancé before the “vanishing groom” and that the Phantom is her father.
@Fun With Steff thanks 😊
@@gabrielmassoc5631 it proves who the phantom was! But I don't like most of the changes like the ballroom music though...
Why did they remove Melanie at 9:08 they legit replaced her with a wall I loved that animatronic it was like she finally died and went to heaven
I think that the people who "fixed" the ride didn't understand it to begin with, I ALWAYS wanted to go ride it, because it looked AMAZING but it seems that I won't be able to unless they revert it back but just upgrade the effects, I find it less scary and that they changed the story, is it just me?
I was also surprised but it's to show that all Melanie's lovers died by the "Phantom"...and I'm really starting to think it's Henry Ravenswood, her father
She is still there but only her arm with a box and a ring in it
@@Lowbatterymoon Of course, that's the logic of life
Damien Warren/Studio Electro it has been confirmed that the Phantom is indeed Henry Ravenswood, that’s why you can see him in the foyer painting along with Melanie, as well as in two of the paintings in the portrait gallery right after you exit the stretching room.
Changes that I strongly dislike:
I'm not a fan of the changes to the beginning foyer (the mirror/painting); I preferred just the daughters face fading in and out (more ambigious who the killer is).[The "changing art gallery" scene in the beginning further removes all ambiguity by showing her father is the phantom]
The "hanging" scene in the ceiling/at the end of the stretching room. The phantom is looking down below and holding an empty noose. Previously he was actually in the act of hanging his daughters suitor.
I strongly dislike the new stretching room portraits for the story changes they bring. Now the bride has had multiple suitors, which essentially turns her from a victim to an accomplise, or just very clueless. Previously the portraits were vague sure, but focused on her innocence and very unfortunate luck. I preferred the simpler story with one suitor that was hung by the phantom (who may or may not have been her father).
Luckilly they've changed the ballroom music back, but I think the placement of the phantom was much better before...peering down on her.
I prefered the bride's skull mirror before...it was a memorable edgar allen poe inspired scene.
The zombie dog seems to growl instead of bark now; I liked the more aggresive bark, but he does look better.
I also dislike the hitchiking bride scene at the end, she's either trying to kill you or simply gone crazy. In the previous version she "sacrifised herself" to help you escape phantom canyon and it added to the sympathy you already felt for her as an innocent victim.
I'm relatively indifferent on the bride holdinig flowers being replaced by a knight of armor. This is because they've added her to the opening stairway scene.
I'm also pretty indifferent with the new final phantom animatronic...I maybe prefered the old scene because it showed how far the phantom was willing to go and how far from humanity he was at that point. The new animatronic, like all of the other technical improvements are cool though.
Ultimatedly, I think they botched the story. It was simple and "realistic" before, with the bride being someone you felt great sympathy for. Regardless, the aesthetics, tech and sound are objectively better now.
Wow, the new lighting really has made the world of difference!
At the end with the mirrors Melanie and Henry (The Phantom) are laughing together.
Henry is the phantom’s name?
@@disneyparksstarwarslover7638 Well, people confirm the Phantom is Henry Ravenswood, but the Phantom is just named "Phantom"
Things I dislike
1. Removal of the melanie animatronic (replaced by the knight)
2.Removal of animatronic Phantom in ball room
3. Removal of the skull vanity
4. Melanie going evil at the end
Melanie was moved onto the stairs at the loading area, and in the ballroom scene the phantom is behind Melanie on the staircase
And the ballroom soundtrack too
Yeah, that too
They changed the ballroom music back to the original
Yay
The Phantom especially towards the end looks amazing. The movements are lifelike and fluid
I'll always prefer the original version but I can't deny that the refurbished one is an objective improvement and a lot more guests will end up loving it this way. This is Disney making sure that next waves of visitors don't look at the rides as antiques but as contemporary, impressive and impactful attractions. The old version just wasn't doing that so I'm ok with it. But I am definitely glad we have so many excellent memories (and online video's haha) of the original.
why do you like the original more?
@@dieganzkuhlelmao5303 Couple of reasons. I preferred the more melancholic story where the bride was trapped in her grief and her father's madness rather than being an actual crazy villain herself. The ride now blends the two narratives and it just doesn't work imo. I also think certain additions didn't really work. The static figures of the bride (in the station) and the Phantom (in the ballroom) are rather awkward to look at since they don't move an inch (like, why, when you have animatronics all over the place?), and I also don't get why they replaced the gorgeous bride animatronic at the beginning of the ride with a castle guard who's kind of unintentionally humorously shuffling around. Same with the now removed skeleton bride floating in the crystal at the end. Beautiful scenes that didn't need substitution or additions at all to me. Other changes, mostly tech upgrades, are great but yeah, the concept itself deserved a little more love and care (and money, probably) imo.
I will say that regardless of additions or subtractions, the lighting seems infinitely improved in the refurb! Its so much more vibrant and creepy
Yay the original ballroom music is back according to some people who rode it again!
I'm really curious what they did with Melanie's greeting animatronic and why they took her away😭 We certainly don't mind seeing more of her in her own attraction!
So what if she's on the stairs then greeting us, then in the long hallway? It's her story after all:(
The greeting animatronic is possibly the one standing on the staircase in the Load Area.
@@matthewheid1645 I heard someone saying that greeting bride was too tall, and they had to make a new one for the loading area😭 Hopefully Fastpass facts has the answer!
Some of the new lighting is great but some is just so dang bright and non creepy. Like when you exit the attic. They should have used a darker color palette
I just discovered they changed the ballroom music back!
Is there video evidence?
@@codymcdaniel1773 O liked the classic organ music from the original HM MUCH better...a shame they switched it back, if this is true...
Everyone knows that old saying: If it isn't broke don't fix it!!!!-They could of just upgraded the animatronics/sets or something
Is there a reason they took the first Melanie animatronic away? It seems like they had nothing to replace her with, so they just put a Knight statue there...she’s the main character of the ride, so wouldn’t it make sense for her to be the first thing guests see? I haven’t gotten to ride phantom manor, but I’ve always wanted to, and her animatronic looked beautiful from all the videos I’ve seen. I don’t understand her removal.
One thing we can all agree on, the lighting in the new one is fantastic
Removal of the Melanie's skeleton at the end is a bummer, it was so creepy in a 70s and 80s horror sorta way.
I like that it is more visible, before it was really dark, but the brighter colors can make it a bit non-realistic and fake. It's good dlrp renews and renovates things tho
I was so happy when i heard Vincent Price talking i teared up.. Glad he's finally there. 💕💕
So TLDR: they changed all the warm lighting to blue-green, made everything brighter & colorful, and Melanie now goes crazy in the end.
Old Elevator room was far more eerie. The darker lighting the former self had was overall better and the use of CGI really removes you from the ride.
NecroCrafts totally agree
The new lighting is amazing and the effects are awesome but the old storyline was much better.
Super cool video. But I'm wondering why they changed the super skull mirror. And why some of the portraits changed again.. I love the haunted mansion story
Im a bit sad... it's like if they make the ride less scary/creepy (like the second laughing skeleton , wich was a bit disturbing and now more family-friendly) and also the last animatronic of melanie in the middle of the diamond, when she is a skeleton... this one was reaaaally cool, really creepy... so I prefer the old version :3
Corpse Phantom and Skeleton Melanie being gone is a crime
Now that I’m seeing everything side by side... I’m going to miss the old Phantom Manor, I really don’t like most of the changes. The original Phantom Manor music was way better (crossing my fingers they’ll bring it back) and I also prefer the original storyline, to me it was more chilling and tragic but that’s probably personal preference🤷🏻♀️ I just personally can’t with Melanie going insane... I also don’t like how they put that knight instead of Melanie, he seems kind of out of place, idk. And I think I also prefer the old stretching room paintings as well as the narration (even though I had my troubles with the French). Maybe I’ll like it after I’ve seen it in person but as of now they kinda ruined it for me.
The old ballroom music has now been restored again after feedback.
You are completely entitled to your opinion, but do try to put the nostalgic glasses off (I did and believe me that was hard for me since I'm a DIEHARD fan of this ride).
The original organ music in the ballroom is back, so points there!
The storyline hasn't really changed much they just added and explored it a little bit. The idea of several suitors dying does make it more tragic in my opinion, like this poor woman just can't get a break. I do agree that having her being insane is a con for me, loved the idea of her being this tragic victim but now she's some sorth of evil presence in the end?
I found it sad too they moved Melanie's animatronic to the stairs instead of where they now have the knight. Loved that animatronic and now we can't see it from up close anymore.
About the stretching portraits, these ones are an immediate improvement. Why? They are much stronger in visual storytelling. I mean, what wás the deal with the old portraits? They were nice and all but what did they tell us actually? To me, as much as I loved them, they felt a bit disconnected from everything else. These new portraits are far more straight forward and tell us what happened to every man that Melanie was close to. and I LOVE the effect of melanie disappearing out of the paintings. It fits into the narrative to a T.
But the most improvement is in the lighting. The lighting in the ride is much more cooler and lighter so you can see more properly and everything feels a bit more connected. Take the skeleton lounge, the old version had colors ALL over the place and all sorts. It was overload. The new one is much more flowing, having only cool colors like blue, green and purple.
MissFlow okay, so I decided to wait until I actually rode the new version before commenting again and I have to admit that I actually really like the new narration and stretching room portraits. And I’m so glad the old music is back in the ballroom scene. The last scene with Melanie in the mirror is simply horrible, I don’t know how anyone could ever think that’s a good idea for the ride, especially with the audio, no just no...🤦🏻♀️
MissFlow I agree with the lighting in general, however the bright neon yellow/green in the first room when entering the manor is kinda weird, I don’t like it
Fan commentary dump! Grab your popcorn, this is gonna be a long one :D
Story: I applause for what they did with the story. They did add new things to make it new and fresh yet it doesn't really contradict the lore that was already there, except for maybe the idea that Melanie had only one suitor she was increadibly fond on so much to die for when she could not find him. They changed her from a sweet tragic victim to a somewhat psychopatic ghost that lost her sanity. This is the one change in the story I'm not too keen on. I loved the idea of her being this tragic victim that even tries to help us out of the house throughout the ride (after of course showing us her story first).
The idea of several suitors is actually quite cool and the new stretching portraits are a great example of visual storytelling. As much as I loved the old portraits, let's be honest they did not really add anything to the narrative and lore. I mean, what did they tell us? The showed all kinds of misfortune for Melanie but....did those things really happen or is it just an indicator of bad things to come? If so then why these 4 scenarios? The new portraits are far more straight with what they tell. These are 4 suitors, Melanie disappears and they all tragically died. Plain and simple!
The one thing that I would have done is diving in more into the history of the house. The old version didnt do that thus making the scenes feeling a bit random at points (like the skeleton tunnel/lounge and the decaying zombie town at the end, only fans who are aware of the PM lore know the context but other people and newcomers will probably feel lost with these scenes). The new version doesn't explore this either but is just focusing on the aspect of Melanie's relationship with the phantom.
Ride:
Let's start with the foyer. The language switches between french and english don't truely bother me as much as others apparently do. It's nice to finally have an english version, so people would understand what's going on. I like the idea of showing the room from decaying state to glory state but the color palette of green and blue caught me off guard. Weird color choice. Why not red and yellow, to give it a warm, welcoming appearance? Like how Phantom Manor used to be in it's glory days? But the portrait is a great visual effect!
The stretchingroom, what can I say? Love the new makeover! Great visual story telling here!
The loading area and portrait gallery is where I feel they missed bit of an opportunity qua storytelling. Here they really could have given some hints and bits about PM's history and the Thunder Mountain disaster! It doesn't have to spelled out or spoonfed to us, no no. But just a portrait of the Thundermountain in normal state and it's haunted state would be that it's tormented by the earthquake, could already be enough! And maybe a portrait of the Thunder Mesa people and it's haunted state would be the zombie version we see in the ride at the end! Hell, add Melanie and her parents inthere! The suitors? That would be absolutely amazing. But the new portraits as they are a nice and some cool references there. I also love the color and lighting of the loading area, particulary on the stairs, where Melanie is now standing. That used to be just purple/blue and dark but now there is so much more contrast!
Further on we move to where Melanie used to welcome us in the old version, but now they replaced her with a random knight. I feel conflicted about this. On the one hand it makes sense, since now she's to be found on the stairs and there is no need for her to be there anymore. On the other hand, I LOVED that animatronic! The idea that she was welcoming us guests in her house gave me the vibe that she was longing for normal compagny after being mocked by all those spirits that were invited in her house by the phantom. She was lonely, and wants us to accompagny her. And yes, I think she was a ghost here as well, the endless hallway reveals that to us. And let's get to the main change in the ride: Melanie and the Phantom are almost always together in 1 scene. He's in the endless hallway, he's in the mirror at the brides boudoir, and he's behind her in the ballroom scene. This gives the feel of control. He's controlling her and mocking her all around. I like that idea. It connects the scenes a bit more.
The ballroom's main change is the lighting. Everything is not only a bit more colder qua feeling but also less dark. Now you can see pretty much everything and THANK GOD by now they've switched back from the Haunted Mansion tune to the original Phantom Manor ballroom music. Thank you DIsney! Thank you for listening to us. I truely appreciate it, what were you thinking placing that music inthere?? XD
The bride's boudoir... well... too bad they removed the reference (can't come up with the name of that painting, the one with the lady and the mirror, giving it the shape of a skull). Also Melanie is no longer an old lady (wich i found a bit weird in the old version. Did she really grow old and cried about her lost groom áll the way through??? Kind of a stretch right?)
The Phantom looks pretty much the same, except the glowing eyes.
Good to see the hellhound is back. Last time i went to PM he was gone.
The skeletons look different to me, some of them. And again the lighting in the skeleton lounge is different, which is an improvement. The old version had colors áll over the place. Red, yellow, purple, green, blue etc. It felt disconnected and overload. The new version has only cold colors, mainly purple and blue and it gives way more flow in the scenery. Also is it me or do the busts look more smooth moving? Did they restorate the footage of the faces somehow? Dunno.
This is also the case with Phantom Canyon, the color palette feels more consistent and the new animatronics look dashing! And that last phantom animatronic is outstanding! How he moves, how he sounds it's incredible. That gesture he makes. Briljant replacement for the weird corpse that was there before.
Then the crystal skeleton bride scene, which aint there anymore. Too bad, I loved that effect and the idea that she was sacrificing herself to point us the way to safety. Now our 4 suitors are lying there, with 1 of them breaking free with a ... ring? Couldn't really tell.
Melanie appearing in the buggies is a nice idea but I still don't really like how malicious they've made her. I would have loved it way more if they did this effect, but instead of sounding mean and evil they could have made her sound tragic and sweet. Like she's begging us to marry her with a sad tone in her voice. Or not at all, just have her sing. I don't know, maybe it is a great improvement and is nostalgia just kicking in with me but this is a change I really have to get over.
Verdict: Bravo Disney, for your hard work on this gem of a ride! Even tho I'm not keen on every change the main result is great and ready for new generations and decennia to come!
Yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh.
I prefer the old narrator and the catch phrases, but the storyline is interesting. But the lights, and animatronics are amazing.
But Come on... The ballroom, wtf happened ? It sounds like my 6 yo cousin's birthday theme.
Vincent Price is the ORIGINAL narration. The first. The true old narration. This is better.

Exactly what I wanted to see! Thanks!!
I saw this a few years ago. It was in the middle of Pokemon Go mania so the cast member who gave the safety spill said at the end " and please no Pokemon Go playing during you ride experience".
Hello, in the part of the ballroom, the soundtrack sounds much better in 2017.
I know that the original soundtrack of ''Disney World'', in this attraction, is the one that sounds now in 2019, but I prefer the sound of the pipe organ of 2017.
The pipe organ is back. Fans were so mad they changed it back.
Incredible video! Very well done! Did not realize all the changes until your video. Amazing job thank you!!
Wow! Thanks for doing the comparison. I was watching the other new one and the whole time thinking "was that there before?" Huge improvements!
I am a hard core fan of the Phantom Manor for almost 15 years but I do think the old version was truely dated in certain places and people really have to take their nostalgic glasses off to analyze the changes instead of going 'ughh I like the old version more!'. Yes, the old one had it's charm, but you know what it's glory days were for real over and Phantom Manor had to go with the current time period, so that newer generations can still enjoy this masterpiece.
Don't forget people, this ride is almost 27 years old!
A ride simply can't stay pure and original for that long, as hard as it may seem it will bore people out eventually and new generations will always look for excitement. And what was excitement and groundbreaking effects for us back in the day, those might be dated now and the new gens won't be as mesmerized by them as we were at their age. It's sad but true, I've seen it with my younger cousins. They truely didn't understand my excitement for this ride back in 2016. And they were right, most of the animatronics didn't work, the lighting was barely present, making the ride far too dark in certain places, the french audio didn't help for they don't understood what was going on qua story, and the doombuggies kept making noises during the ride which took us out of the experience.
Phantom Manor was my great obsession. My 13 year old me couldn't get enough of this and I treasure my first experience of PM dearly. But 10 years later I returned and really it wasn't as magical as I remembered as a kid. Maybe it's adulthood doing that but you will never experience something again the way you did as a kid.
That's why it's important to treasure nostalgia but don't let it cloud your better judgement. The old version of PM will always stay with me but the new PM is also a wonderfull upgrade and ready for new gens.
If you prefer the old version because of good arguments I can understand, but don't hate on the new version simply because it's new. That's stupid.
Your right this ride is probably my favorite version of the haunted mansion but the only change that is really difficult to accept is the removal of the Melanie skeleton showing you the way out and replacing it with making her evil I feel like Melanie should’ve kept her old character representing the innocence and purity of her heart The new version was not bad I liked it but I feel like that change was too drastic because the skeleton pointing out adds a unique story to the bride in all the other haunted mansions the bride is evil but I wish this wasn’t the case what do you think ?
I went back today and oh man! I really liked but wow it was so much less exciting than in my memory. It's crazy that filter we have on as kids.
@@mariebernard2558 yes cause the story is sort of ruined there is no mystery and not as much context as back then even the music seemed better back the the ride felt Genuinely creepy but now it’s just not as good and maybe even disappointing to some but I’m glad you liked it I hope I do too when I visit
As much as I admire the changes, I'll always be a bit heartbroken that I never had the chance to ride the original 💔
PS Does anyone know if they consulted the original Imagineers while making these changes? I know how seriously they took this mansion and would be surprised if they didn't offer their help!
Ashley N in a way agreed, most people probably wouldn’t accept Melanie just be passive and waiting for her groom. In this version she is more active plus it seems they want all the bride characters alike in some way.
@@tomgallowitz For sure! I do think it's interesting, though, that they changed it from Melanie independently finding her way out of the mansion/town (9:08) to Melanie relying on marriage (despite her multiple failed attempts prior) to get out of the mansion. The original escape sounds more "modern" in the sense that it doesn't involve a man saving her, right? 😂 Tbh I don't personally think that's a problem, but it's definitely an interesting change.
Ashley N I don’t either plus it showed Melanie was just innocent victim like her mother, whereas in this one she’s an active participant and deserving to be cursed
THIS is the video I've been waiting for, thank you so much!
She does not guide you out of the ghost realm in the new one?
C'est pénible d'entendre parler les deux versions en même temps. Je preferais la première voix
Mais après on si habitue
Oui Ryan
If someone doesn’t like the changes, they have a right to complain. If someone likes the changes, they have the right to enjoy it. This isn’t rocket science. Let’s try to be respectful and respect both sides. Heck, ask them why they feel that way instead of straight up insulting them. We’re all passionate fans!!
Top 3 of bads points :
New voice (Less creepy)
The f* story change
Bad location of the "dad" in the ballroom scene
To all the People that hate the new version, go to disney visit the manor and come back! I Just went there to see it and in person its much better and a lot scarier. The effects are Amazing the music fits the ride perfect and the new animatronics are Amazing!! Love it! I loved the old ride but this is for sure a great update
English voiceover is back HELL YEAH!!!! :)
Also, I'm glad the Phantom at the end looks like his other selves. In the original I didn't even understand that it was supposed to be the same character.
I love the new boarding area
I made a fool of myself in the old boarding area. I have problems with my balance and didn't realise we stepped on to a moving walkway. Guess who thought she was falling over and gave a scream - and that was before we had even seen any ghosts!
Je préférais l'ancienne version, plus sombre et mélancolique.
Ah non beaucoup plus sombre maintenant
Seems like it took an unusually long amount of time for the changes they made. I like what they did quite a lot, but it just seems like 14 months would have brought about bigger changes. I’m kinda glad it didn’t, but still don’t know why it took 14 months to achieve that.
Alot of stuff behind the scenes changed and everything in that ride was repainted that’s why it took so long
Apparently the ride was practically finished by september (ready for halloween), but asbestos was found in some of the backstage areas which they had to remove out of precaution. Sadly this took more time than originally planned, so all the visible changes only took about 8 months to achieve.
Older imagineers > new generation imagineers.
older doesn’t always mean better. both generations have worked on great projects
@@fusetunes in this case yes, older generation have done an amazing imagineer, this new one is simply low cost in comparison..
@@angelawatson8322 Not only that, but also lazy and uninspired.
Olivia Hanna well, low cost doesn’t always mean worse, either- plenty of great movies have been made on low budgets, and some of them far outshine billion dollar blockbusters. i agree that not all the updates to phantom manor may be great, but i think it should be judged a little more fairly than “it’s less expensive and new, so it must be bad”
Good thing they kept the mayor of phantom canyon because he was the dreamfinder in journey into imagination
I definitely like the old lighting scheme better.
I think I’m the only one that likes the phantom at 8:58 better in the old one. The new ones movements are better to say the least, but I liked his corpse slowly rotting and decaying. It gives it a more creepy vibe.
The new version seems like a cartoon. All the bright colors makes it a game of laser tag.
You can't see shit in the old one
To be fair the new video was shot with low light on.
The old one was pretty cartoony, too. The final phantom looked ridiculous. Much more foreboding now.
I think the final phantom was supposed to show him in his actual current state which was a form of decay. And as for not being able to see stuff, it could be most of the potato cams that film it.
The original 2017 and the 2019 model have both succeeded very well. Some of the "old" theming I thought was better, but much is much better lit and presented in the new version. Where with me I mean not only bright accents, but also the geist-lit ones.
A lot of things get a completely different caracter when it's illuminated elsewhere.
I also find the lord of the castle as a skeleton in the new version better since it is significantly better illuminated and the movements of the figure are significantly better adapted to the dirty laugh. The sound track for this has also become much better.
Some things that have been done better have not been much better, but you always have to see the whole picture in the modernizations and not lose sight of the corresponding Disney story.
I think even though I will miss a lot of old loves things, you have restored it well!
What would interest me again would be due data in Phantom Manor. For example, I am interested in the year of construction of the railway. 😉
So, they decided to make it look cheap.
Yep sadly..
I am pretty disapointed, they swapped the really spooky feel with a comic strip ride.... why why why all this bright colors. :-(
I do like the old lightlevels a lot more, and why did they remove the bride for a trashy armor?
Not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet, the video doesn't show it either; Phantom Manor's version of Little Leota was removed from the ride as well. She wasn't there last time I visited.
the bit were she is looking in the mirror is alot better before, as we can clearly see the skull looking back at the bride.. MAYBE the dance hall part was abit better too, as it was alot darker and could see the ghosts dancing clearer but all in all, looks good...
Nice job! Some much needed spot lights were put up in the refurbishment....someone cleaned a bit....less cobwebs 🕸...ty!
For all the people questioning the music changes, they’re bringing back the old soundtrack for the scenes that need it
If they change the music in the ballroom then I’d be happy with it. I don't completely know the old story line (if someone could explain that would be awesome) but I don't like Melanie becoming the villain. The original (again, from what I remember ) was a sad love story where Melanie was trapped in this haunted mansion and could never get her husband.
The original story was about Melanie Ravenswood, daughter to Henry, the richest man in the town of Thunder Mesa. He made a fortune off of mining deep into Big Thunder Mountain despite the natives' warning that it would awaken the dangerous mythical thunderbird and would curse him and the town. Melanie fell in love with a train conductor who planned to move away from Thunder Mesa and take Melanie with him. To Henry it was a double blow to his pride and he vowed he would do whatever it took to stop the wedding. Before he could however, a massive earthquake caused by too much mining struck the town. Henry's wife was killed and apparently he was too. The wedding seemed destined to go on unchallenged...or so Melanie thought. On her wedding day she waited and waited for her groom to come but he never did. Little did she know he was lured up to the attic and killed by a mysterious figure who referred to himself as the Phantom and hung him from the rafters. Melanie kept on waiting, even as the wedding guests departed, the cake rotted away, and she herself grew old. The Phantom, who may or may not be the vengeful spirit of Henry Ranvenswood, filled the manor with ghastly spirits and continued to torment Melanie as she waited in vain for the wedding day that would never come.
As you travel through the original Phantom Manor, Melanie's spirit does everything in her power to prevent you from falling into the clutches of the Phantom. She greets you as you enter, wards you away from the endless hallway, but loses sight of you as she realizes how old and alone she is and weeps before her mirror, recreating the famous "All is Vanity" image. The Phantom pushes you into an open grave leading to the underworld and a twisted version of Thunder Mesa called Phantom Canyon. He intends to trap you there forever as he reveals his true form (a rotting zombie) and mockingly points towards an open casket intended for you. But Melanie returns in her corporeal form, now as a skeleton in a tattered wedding dress, to point the way to safety through some crystal caverns. The cavern leads you to the wine cellar of the manor, but the Phantom makes one last attempt at dragging your doom buggy back to the land of the dead.
the original one is way more darker than the one
I’m also happy that the first room you enter upon arrival actually serves some kind of purpose to the story now.
it’s always so rushed / often skipped and now it adds something extra to the storyline and ambience of the whole attraction! can’t wait to ride it in two weeks 💛
I’m legit 21 and the original phantom scared me shitless when I went before the refurbishment
Is this re-opened?
Looks like it did, given that the date was May 3rd.
(Could also be press, or opened ahead of schedule)
@@nermac1 This is the passholders' preview day.
@@TheLewistownTrainspotter8102 Ah! Much appreciated , so it is mainly for press and early access.
Even if the narrative plot of the deadly bride collecting pretendants is more clear, I absolutely dislike the refurbishment.
New intro, paintings (if we can call digitally-made-illustrations paintings), soundscapes, paintings, even the music. Everything is wrong and it wastes the eerie strangeness and nostalgic B-movie atmosphere. But nothing kills more the gothic atmosphere than these new LED based lights. Darkness and feeble flickness of a candlelight are gone.
This attraction had its special charm from 25 years by its old-school flavor. Maybe “dusty”. But who seriously cares about the dust here ? (Figuratively speaking)
It was like entering into a golden-age movie . Sadly it is gone.
RIP Old Phantom Manor.
When I criticize the LED lights, I precise the new blue green and purple lightscape. Killing the eerie
I don’t want either the return of feeble incandescent bulbs for candlelights. But you can now reconstruct those warm colors with last generation LED.
It’s all a question of atmosphere. Wish for more darkness, and looking for a flicking glow.
Did anyone notice if they changed the ceiling scene in the stretching room? Is it still the phantom hanging the groom or have they changed it to something else? I know in America it is the hat box ghost. They seem to have shown you less of it in the new version with the lighting flashes. It seems to be less flashes than the original and they have put them all together at the end so you can't quite see who is hanging from the ceiling.
Also, why on earth did they replace melanie's skeleton with a wall right at the end of the ride? What purpose to the story line does it fulfill? Can anyone tell me what it says on the wall? Are they tombs, it's really hard to see what it is as the ride is going too fast now. It seems to have picked up the pace and so you struggle trying to look and take in everything.
This is my favourite ride in Disneyland Paris, ever since I was a child, and I am so disappointed with the new changes. I can understand them updating the ride as new tech makes some of the rides look more effective, but because the theme and style of this ride was for it to be stuck in time, haunted by its past, they should have left it alone. It totally ruins the look and feel that Walt Disney originally wanted and because it was so different from all the other haunted mansions (hence why it was called phantom manor), it's original story line and pacing made it stand out. Now it just seems to be all like the rest now. Not making sense, and not feeling as scary.
The only thing that I will say is that I love the new melaine on the staircase as you board the doombuggie, she looks gorgeous and she matches the melaine that you can see from outside of the manor, standing in the window looking out. That was a good touch!
Oh and one last thing, where is little leota at the end of the ride when you exit and walk out? I couldn't see her at all!
There is no Hatbox Ghost anywhere but the attic balcony in the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. I don't know where you got any other idea.
@@MatecaCorp Oops yes you're right, I don't know where I got that idea from. I'm sure I read somewhere that they were thinking of adding him in when they refurbished the rides in America as that's where he was originally supposed to be? They then ended up adding him in the attic instead. I don't know, maybe I imagined reading that as well. To be honest talking about the hat box ghost wasn't the main point of my comment. I don't really know much about him. I just wanted to know if they added him in the new phantom manor because if they had, that would have been another disappointment to the recent update as he has nothing to do with this version of the ride.
Starfantasy16 they got rid of her
Hâte de tester la nouvelle version bien que l'ancienne restera gravé dans ma mémoire
Congratulations! The video is superb, so clear and very well done, thank you!
Bravo et merci pour ce comparatif ! Je me suis régalée ❤
Do this in Anaheim please!!! It livens it up sooo much and it’s done incredibly well!!!!
Despite some of the things they took out, the newer version has more “life” to it don’t you think? (Haha)
Not sure what they were trying to do with the phantom, but the original was so much better.
Everything about the new one is so much nicer I love it
I wouldn't be surprised if they add an animatronic bride going up and down on the stairs when you enter the seats in a few years
Whoever was leading the light design team needs to be promoted. Such a top notch refurb
Phantom Manor 2017 > Phantom Manor 2019
I can't be the only one extremely angry? They completely massacred the ride
People complain about anything. Like I'm sure you guys will get use to it.. We did when they took our tower of terror from Disneyland.. And the reason I say this people are like the grimmy ghost doesn't fit.. I'm like it was in the orgianl doesn't anyone pay attention to the ride lol
I mean, the Singing Busts and the Seance Room didn't really fit in with the original Phantom Manor yet people never complained about them.
You're right about everything but the first part.
As patrons, we shouldn't accept something we dislike. Especially if it is easily fixed

They need to put Elsa at the very end telling Melanie she can't marry the first person she meets lol
Original Mélanie was in love, sweet and sad.. This is not my Melanie !
She's nothing but a whiny and helpless coward. She couldn't let her younger sister Anna marry Hans, but she's ok with her suddenly being in love with Kristoff even after only just being around each other for a few days. What kind of message was Frozen trying to teach?! Talk about confusing and contrived!
@@1992disney Kristoff tried to save Anna and helped her so Elsa can trust him more than Hans. Plus, it's a Disney movie, it just says not to trust someone because they look nice. Excuse me but why did you say Elsa is just a helpless coward ? She is just hurting and lacks of self confidence (she is a metaphor of depression) And thanks to this movie, I relate to Elsa and I see that there is a solution, that people are here for me and that killing yourself is not the solution. So calling her a coward you just insult people with mental disorders. Please stop saying Frozen is a bad movie, I'm not saying it's the best and it definitely has flaws but I have the impression that you say it's a bad film just because it's popular (or at least explain why you think it's bad with reasonable arguments)

@@baguettealail3077 It's Anna and Elsa's parents' fault for making Elsa be that way! They didn't even try to help her control her own powers! They just locked her up in her room and forced her into years of isolation! They basically told her that she should be afraid of herself all because of an incident in which she almost accidentally killed Anna! The trolls weren't helpful either! They decided that it would be such a good idea to erase Anna's memory of Elsa having ice powers and the incident! Why did they have to do that?! Why couldn't they just tell Anna about her big sister's magical powers so that she could understand her better and sympathize with her instead?! What was the whole point of this?! And when the king and queen left Arendelle on a ship, they didn't bother to have someone take over the entire kingdom for them while they were away as both Anna and Elsa weren't old enough at the time to take the throne! When they supposedly died at sea from a violent storm, Elsa continued to separate herself from Anna because of the emotional trauma she had been suffering throughout her entire childhood due to her parents' incompetence, stupidity, and negligence! What Disney movie starts off like that?! What kind of conflict does that create?! They're so bad and idiotic that it makes Buck Cluck from Chicken Little look like a good parent in comparison! And that's saying a lot!
@@baguettealail3077 Elsa is possibly one of, if not, the weakest and most unlikable Disney heroine of all time! She was so poorly-written and lacks so much character development! She keeps shutting her little sister Anna out and rejecting her friendship all because of the fear of killing her from being unable to control her ice powers! While it is understandable that she really doesn't want that to happen and to try to keep Anna safe, she could've at least let Anna help Elsa out and be able to bond with her and strengthen their relationship as sisters! But she NEVER did that! All she really did was whine and complain about being incapable of handling her powers, abandon her royal duties as the new queen of her kingdom, run away, allow all of her people to freeze to death and continue to isolate herself due her parents being incompetent morons! When Anna finally reaches to Elsa in her ice castle, Elsa continues to turn her away and tells her to leave! Anna then tries to convince her to come back home and undo her curse of an eternal winter on the entire land, but ended making Elsa harm Anna again! She then creates a huge snow monster guardian named Marshmallow to force Anna out and keep away from Elsa, when it nearly could've killed Anna instead of keeping her safe! And after that, she didn't even realize what she had done and try to save Anna herself by going after her before it's too late! She just continued to be fearful and isolate herself from the rest of the world! Although she did try to defend and protect herself by using her powers when Hans and his men invade Elsa's castle in order to capture her and bring her back to Arendelle, she ends up getting knocked out by a falling chandelier. Talk about an epic fail. And when Hans tries to kill Elsa, Anna saves her and breaks Hans' sword, but ends freezing herself in the process. Elsa all of a sudden learns that only the love between sisters will undo the curse and is finally capable to control her powers when in reality, Elsa and Anna barely spent enough time together! It's like saying that love will instantly solve everybody's problems when it really doesn't work that way! And sisterhood was supposed to be the movie's main focus and theme, for crying out loud! And all the peasants are suddenly okay with Elsa being their queen when she nearly froze all of her people to death! Do they honestly think they can trust her even though she's a nervous wreck and believe in her running Arendelle without having anymore problems when she showed to them that she actually can't due to the lack of royal education from her parents while also being incapable of handling her emotions in order to control her powers also because of her parents?! Elsa didn't even apologize to Anna for rejecting her and for almost killing her nor did she apologize to everybody for the winter storm that she had caused to them all! That shows she learned absolutely NOTHING from this whole mess! How on Earth can she be considered empowering and relatable that way?! She's just a bad influence and a horrible role model for everyone!
The 2017 soundtrack sounds better
Better lighting, better effects, stronger atmosphere... I really can't see why people are upset about this new refurb.
Wow the new lighting looks SO GOOD.
Juste ce qu'il fallait, un grand bravo aux ingénieurs, trop de changements aurait abîmé l'aspect original de cette merveilleuse attraction, Disney toujours MUST 👍❤❤
