Paigeicorn it’s called the peppers ghost effect, I think??
Basically, underneath where the buggies are, there are animatronics for the ghosts. Right in front of the buggies there is a pane of glass. What you see is the reflection of the animatronics.
So it’s pretty cool, took me forever to find out how they did it lol. If you want to know more you definitely should look into it, it’s awesome.

@@simplysallow Nope, nothing high tech. As Maximus said, it's Pepper's Ghost. Underneath the track is an open room where the mannequins dance. The pane of glass across from the room reflects the image. The optical illusion lends depth to the image so it looks like a "lively" party.

I remember that too.. I went to Disney Land in 1981, the Lines were short enough that at most there was a 5 minute wait... at most.
The people were quiet, listening to the voice recordings... and there wasn't a screaming banshee of an usher telling people what to do.

What Disney should do for their streaming service is create a Haunted Mansion Detective Show. They have 999 'Happy Haunts' what they can do is make it a dark-ish Detective show about how they died, and each week it's like a 2 part episode on them trying to solve the murder of each resident.

@Axtwyt Starkiller My though exactly. Many people don't know this but cremated ashes are often cast out by visitors in the graveyard part of the ride through The Haunted Mansion as some people have asked their ashes to be scattered in The Haunted Mansion as their final resting place. Disney has actually caught many visitors doing this and admits that few people are ever caught. Cleaning up scattered ash occurs in some of these areas fairly often - what is done with the ash has not been reported. Would be curious to get a EVP session in that place after operating hours to see who is there.

Just the very power of Disney's illusions is so fascinating, all the angles had to be studied, every decor had to be put in the perfect position, all the tracks had to be put in the right angle, the combination of all those things would usually botch up the ride, but not Disney, the made it perfect. I remember just, staring in awe as I passed everything. I could swear most of those 'rooms' you see aren't even rooms, just giant reflections of thin glass sheets, but I won't be surprised if they were actual rooms. I also remember the dedication of the staff: the person who opens up the doors to let you into the mansion was a boy for me, he was so angsty and impatient which was obviously a role he was playing, but it was so well played.
Another thing I'd like to mention is the waiting line for this ride: it is not boring at all. It is one of the longest lines in Magic Kingdom, but there's so much interaction that comes with it. After crossing the giant stone bridge, you go into a graveyard where there are little objects you can interact with. I remember there were these little stone bricks you could touch that would make a musical sound, each stone having a different sound. The only real flaw of this line is how long you wait; if you've explored the rest of the Magic Kingdom and are having foot aches, even slight ones, sit down and let them go away because you'll have A LOT of foot aches on this rides line.
As mentioned before, you stand on a *stone bridge* for the majority of the line, and stone is not very friendly with feet, especially when you're supposed to stand for almost 2 hours. Even afterward, you slowly start to climb a small but hellish hill which in between the line leaves you in an awkward tiring slope to stand on. It is recommended that you don't bring elders with you on this ride, even if the majority of the ride is on seats, their aches won't go away for the whole day. Overall, the imagination and dedication poured into this ride is what makes it one of the best: this ride alone is a very good reason to go to the Magic Kingdom on your next Disney trip, 9/10.

Bro. I went on this when me and my big sister went to Disneyland, I wasn't opposed to going on, even though this ride isn't really my favorite. And I remember there was this little girl who was with her Mom and Dad and when it got to the hanging body, she was SOBBING and begging her parents to leave, and because of the dead body, she was like, "I'm not leaving dead!" Her parents were trying to comfort her, and when she left she was still crying. I also remember my sister (who's 3 years older than me.) Asked me to hold her hand because she was a little scared and I did. This ride, while I am in awe of everything they've put into it and the history is super interesting, I've always left with a weird feeling. (maybe because I don't like haunted things.) But, I enjoy looking this up, purely for nostalgia and comments.

a lot of people believe the Ghost Host is Vincent Price, but actually, it's a guy named Paul Frees--the guy who did Bullwinkle Moose and Boris Badenov (among many other voices over the years, and about a million other things).
however, Vincent Price DID play the Ghost Host briefly at Disney Paris, but he wasn't popular with the guests, so they replaced him.
fun fact: the ghost song is sung by Thurl Ravenscroft, who was Tony the Tiger's voice. he also sang "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch", and did lots of other voice work.
