I went with the Wrangler. The transfer bar safety made the difference for me since I wanted the revolver to be safe to carry and instantly ready to shoot. Yes, I carry it as a holster gun in our wooded property. And yes, I have needed it. I do wish a magnum cylinder were avaiable, though.

The ruger Single six has that option but for a much higher price. Probably worth it for long term family legacy piece worth passing down. Both the wrangler and heritage great for use too- guns are kinda like cars. You can get a good work car, an impressive show car, a muscle car, an antique classic, a workhorse truck, SUV, etc... all have their purpose

    • @bigbill2444

In my opinion, Ruger has a reputation for making the better revolver.
The Single Six has a steel frame, while the Wrangler has an aluminum frame (like the Rough Rider).
The Single Six's steel frame will certainly handle the Magnum's extra power better than the aluminum. Will that make a difference in real life with the Rough Rider? I don't know.
Given all that, the decision to not provide the Wrangler with a Magnum cylinder may be due to marketing; Heritage doesn't have a gun in their catalog to match the Single Six, and if Ruger did provide a Magnum cylinder for the Wrangler, that could eat into Single Six sales.
(Even though it appears Ruger isn't making Single Sixes or Blackhawks at the moment.)

I have the heritage in 4 3/4 inch barrel, and at one time i considered a wrangler but I'll tell you what the deal breaker was. I too wondered why there was no mag cylinder for the wrangler so i called ruger CS to ask about it. I talked to a very polite lady and i bluntly asked her if the reason there is no mag cylinder is because ruger themselves doubted the frame could handle the extra pressure of the magnum load and she said yes. I appreciated the honesty. I can't really ask you to believe me, a total stranger, I can only suggest you call them and find out for yourself

@@kennethrisner8648 We each need to decide for ourselves, don't we? I still really like my Wrangler, and like that I can carry it with a full cylinder instead of needing an empty chamber. For me, the Wrangler is a good choice. That does not make it the best choice for everyone. Are there better choices for what I need? Maybe. But based on what I knew at the time, and on what I still need, I have no regrets.

The more I watch videos going over the ins and outs of the Wrangler, the more I like my older Heritage. I believe mine shot a little high (not a bad thing), fairly centered, before making a couple modifications to the sights; a homemade “bead” made from a finish nail head epoxied into a groove cut in the top of the sight (don’t mind blade sights but prefer bead sights), and the rear sight cut to a round bottom to accommodate the bead and set it to be about dead on at 15-20yards. The epoxy held for three years before letting go, so I decided to get a beaded sight the same height and dovetail it into place, which looks a little nicer.
It is a cheaper gun, and was gifted to me used years ago (a win-win, I guess), so I’ve felt it’s one I could tinker with without hurting anything. I’ve also sanded the grips down and refinished them with mineral oil as I didn’t like the thicker feel or the glossy finish.
As for finish, mine has a blued 6 1/2” barrel and cylinders with the black anodized frame and grip frame, which has worn to a dull gray on the backstrap while the frame has almost like a stoned/tumbled finish with what wear I’ve put on it from use and carrying it around the house.
Really the only issue I have is after 100 rounds or so the ejector housing screw comes loose, which I don’t mind I guess. The hammer screw also can’t be tightened down snug as it draws the frame in slightly and binds the hammer. Guess the shoulder on the screw isn’t long enough to stop on the inside of the frame to allow enough clearance.

So many modern guns basically the same and it is refreshing to see companies willing to be different.

The Only thing that gives me Pause about getting a Wrangler is that I'm used to the way the Heritage functions. I think the Wrangler being different would drive me nuts. I just love the Positive Clicks you get from the Heritage.
the finish isn't great on the Heritage but I feel like it's cheap enough that you could Refinish it without worrying too much about messing it up too badly.
I like Ruger's Bearcat too but it's just too expensive but you're paying for the Engraving on it.

    • @jerroldshelton9367
      @jerroldshelton9367 Год назад +2

Hey, what's wrong with paying for engraving? I gave Heritage an extra sixty bucks so I could have .22 LR and .22 WMR cylinders with floral scroll engraving on them!
Mine is the minority view, but there's no question in my mind that the Rough Rider is actually the better gun twixt the twain. It's just not the most maintenance free.
The difference is in the details that truly matter, like the precision machining of cylinders. Heritage can manage to do that so precisely that I can buy spares just because I want a little bling and when I install them, they're a "drop in, no fitting required" fit, with same cylinder gap, same lack of end shake and radial play, and the same accuracy, as the non-engraved cylinders my gun came with had.
Put a precisely machined cylinder behind a decent barrel with a concentric bore of uniform dimensions with a quality interior finish and a correctly cut crown that is perpendicular ot the bore axis, and it SHOULD group all six within a 2" circle at 25 yards.
Top that off with a crisp trigger that breaks at 2 pounds with no creep or overtravel, and the in-the-hand feel and balance of the '51 Navy percussion revolver, and it's even clearer which one is the better value.

On none of my single actions does the firing pin hit the cylinder. (Well, not actually true; my Chiapa does.)
On the Rough Riders, with the safety on, the hammer doesn't even hit the firing pin, so there's no way it could be harmed.

Great video and thorough comparison. Judging by the comments here I think people lean towards the Heritage for its resemblance to the original Colt for re-enactment purposes. I really wanted to like the Heritage with its 22wrm cylinder but I ended up with the Wrangler. For me the fit and (primarily) finish of the Heritage was just not that nice compared to the Wrangler. Your hardened steel version looks pretty nice but the all blue version I saw looked mismatched in finish. Plus I wasn’t a fan of the safety, both functionally and esthetically. Heritage states to carry 5 with one on an empty chamber where as Ruger can be carried with all six rounds. In the end I was looking for a tough little plinker that I could play around in the woods with and I think Ruger will fit that need.

You know at first the Ruger Wrangler was said to be so great
But now that it has been out for a bit the truth is coming out
It's not that accurate Ruger has stated that the wrangler will never have a magnum cylinder because the frame can't handle it
Let's think about that for a minute the frame can't handle a .22 mag that means the materials this gun is made from is very weak and cheap the heritage can .22 mag just fine but the more expensive Ruger can not as far as I can see the Ruger just isn't worth buying when you can get a more accurate heritage that has the capability to shoot magnum and more options for sights grips and barrel lengths

    • @jerroldshelton9367
      @jerroldshelton9367 Год назад +1

Some Rough Riders are made with steel main frames, but most are die cast from Zamak 5, which is at least 2.5 times stronger than the A380 the Wrangler main frame is made from. So, yes, the main frame of the Wrangler is made from weaker stuff. The high carbon steels used for the barrels and cylinders are pretty much the same.
From the few I've had in a Ransom Rest, the mechanical accuracy of the Wrangler seems to me to be on par with that of the typical two-screw, transfer bar safety Single Six, but they really aren't "that accurate," either.
I've owned semi-auto .22 pistols that have more mechanical accuracy than my Rough Rider does, but my Rough Rider will put six shots inside a 1.25" circle at 25 yards when shot from a Ransom Rest, making it just accurate enough for brain-bucket shots on bunnies out to 25 yards or so.
I ended up with a Rough Rider precisely because my second Single Six was as inaccurate as my first and neither of them were accurate enough to be reliable small-game getters. If my Rough Rider wasn't, I'd have ditched it by now and moved on to a pre-owned Smith and Wesson Model 17.
Unless you're going to spend what a Smith and Wesson .22 costs, it's hard to find a .22 LR revolver that's as accurate as a Browning BuckMark semi-auto is. I don't like spraying empty brass all over creation when I'm hunting or at the range, so if I've a revolver that is accurate enough, I'm okay with that.
The Single Six ain't it, though. Neither is the .22 LR SP101, So I'm not surprised that the Wrangler generally isn't, either.

But the laughter didn't end there. The lack of a proper radius crown and the lack of cylinder indexing for loading and unloading are hilarious all by themselves. Then, there's the sloppy fit of the transfer bar safety in the frame, which means the the friction the transfer bar adds to the trigger pull is never going to be consistent on the gun's already craptastic 5.5 trigger pull.
But you really have to shoot a Wrangler to appreciate the cruel joke it is. You get Ruger's Mini-14 standards of "accuracy" at no extra charge. It's pure comedy gold that you get Mini-14, P-85, and Single-Six levels of accuracy without paying the Mini-14 or Single Six premium Ruger often charges in order to get it. With the effort required to open the loading gate compared to other gated single actions, and the effort required to cock the things compared to other single actions, it seems that Ruger is hoping the end user will be too tuckered out to notice they're not hitting what they're aiming at.
I've had the grievous misfortune of shooting more than one of the things and unfortunately, one really has to shoot a Wrangler to get the full comedic effect out of it. The 2.5" to 3" groups Ruger thinks are acceptable for the model make it close to useless as a rabbit wacker. If you like a gun that goes bang and doesn't hit what you're aiming at, the Wrangler really is hard to beat, especially since Mattel discontinued the Fanner 50 cap gun decades ago.
What's also funny is that the Zamak alloy the Fanner 50 was made from is stronger than the A380 that Ruger makes Wrangler main frames from.
Two-screw, transfer-bar Single Sixes generally aren't as accurate as that "freaking junk" and Ruger's solution wasn't to make the Single Six more accurate, but to make a cheaper gun that has inaccuracy parity with the flagship of their .22 single-action line.
I don't care who you are, that's funny, right there!
As cruel a joke as the Wrangler is, it isn't the comedy gold that many of it's fan-boys are.

Especially the lack of cylinder clicks and a half cock is hard to ge used to for me as a CAS shooter. Unfortunately the Ruger Wrangler is currently the only option for a cheap SA .22 LR here in Denmark (the Ubertis are very expensive - and very very hard to find - here), had the Heritage Rough Rider been available, I would have gone for one for sure. Most rimfire revolvers pose a challenge in CAS because the cartridge rims are not visible from the side of the revolver to be able to verify that the hammer is down on an empty chamber. Here is a work-around: Designate one chamber to remain empty. You can plug it with a piece of foam or with a plastic wall anchor sanded down to fit flush. With the "designated" chamber under the hammer, place a dot or other mark on the exterior of the cylinder on both sides of the top strap.

It is. The Wrangler uses a main frame made from A380, an aluminum alloy commonly used in die-casting. The majority of Rough Riders are made with main frames die cast from Zamak 5, which is at least 2.5 times stronger than A380 is. Rough Riders without Zamak 5 main frames have main frames made from steel. The cylinder machining is so precise that Heritage can offer accessory cylinders as direct-fit "drop in" components. The barrels of the Rough Rider are made from the same 1215 high carbon steel bar stock that Colt used to make Frontier Scout (which the Rough Rider is basically a copy of) from and they're made in the same way. They're gun-drilled in a fixture insuring a concentric bore. They're radius crowned (Wranglers are not) in a fixture insuring that the crown is perpendicular to the bore. They're button-rifled, which results in uniform interior barrel dimensions and a quality interior barrel finish. They're stress relived as the Colt Frontier Scout barrels were, too. The Colt action yields a crisp, light, creep-free trigger with virtually no over-travel. The cylinders index for loading / unloading.

It's a amazing what you can get "For a few dollars more.".....

Don't let Alec Baldwin handle your revolvers or they (the revolvers) might decide to kill someone.

22 mag has alot more ass on it than 22lr. Not my choice for defense but it would work in a pinch. Good survival gun. Or a dang good first handgun for little boy. Teaches basics and marksmanship over just spitting rounds

I shot a friends ruger and i agree its akward with the cylinder, the ruger shoots better than my rrs that seem to constantly hit the edge of the rim and not fire but still prefer them
