Good review, I like them both but the ability to shoot long rifle or magnum ammo leans me toward the Heritage.
Also means it’s more durable so not sure why people think ruger is build more strong
@@LaughingCrowcorp people think rugers are built strong because of how the GP was based off of the manurhin revolvers used by the gign which were expected to fire 100 full power 357 Magnum loads a day and work great. For the most part the Ruger gp100 made good on that reliability. They are damn near indestructible, but it's far to early to tell for the wrangler
My argument for free spin being nicer.. when u shoot cowboy action u learn the load 5 habit. I never thought I'd get used to that but I did. Heck I only load 5 in my 1911 mags when I practice shoot. Anyway the free spin makes it easier to rotate back to the unloaded cylinder
Love the 22 mag. option but I cannot get past the safety on the Heratige! But that may be just me.

Yeah right ..Kevin I've bought all 3 the ruger the diamond back n the heritage n I myself am considering selling the ruger because the shot placement is to the left n it shoots low... not the same story on the diamond back or the rough rider they r literally the funest plinking ever so accurate yet so affordable great job heritage
I have the 22lr heritage. Had for over a year now and not one malfunction. I paid less than $130 for mine new. I also love the fact the heritage has a safety. I think all firearms should have a safety. Just my opinion

ALL revolvers have a built in safety. It's called hammer down. A revolver does,nt need a thumb safety. The person who designed the RR probably got laughed out of the board meeting when they showed the safety on the cylinder. JUST STUPID
The fit and finish of the Heritage is amazing for the price. I like that the operation is more closely like the original Colt than the modernized Ruger. I also like that the Heritage indexes at half cock for unloading…the Ruger cylinder is freespinning and you have to kind of manually line it up with the ejection rod. The Heritage also shoots tighter groups (at least in my experience) and I LOVE the option to run 22lr and 22 WMR (22 mangnum). It’s a fun plinking gun and doesn’t pretend to be anything else. Nor does it want to be. No, you won’t use it instead of your $900 Vaquero for CAS, but you ‘ll use it for practice…and just about anything else.
my wife bought me a "barkeep" & i was shocked at the accuracy of the least expensive gun i now own! Plus just bought a 22 wmr cylinder for less than $40!! from heritage.

I've owned two heritage ruff ryders and one Ruger wrangler. I got both rough riders for $98 each on Christmas sales, and paid $200 for the Ruger at another Christmas sale. I ended up transferring both rough riders to my nephew's due to accuracy issues, one shot high left and the other shot high right so you always had to adjust where you would aim in order to roughly hit what you wanted to and that sort of drove me nuts.
I still have the Ruger Wrangler, but it shoots low and right, below the line of sight 😆.
I grew up learning to shoot a pistol with my father's 9 inch barreled Ruger single six three screw model.
It was DEAD NUTS accurate, and here in Colorado they are going for $900 used at gun shows. As a graduation present from college, my father bought me the same pistol but with a 6 and 1/2 inch barrel, and same thing......VERY accurate. These are going for around $700 at gun shows around here. Growing up, I saw my father shoot a ground squirrel off of a boulder at around 50 yards with his 9-inch single six. Sadly my father has passed away since then, and I've happily given both models of the single six's to my two sons and they love them!
I realize "you get what you pay for"..... But it still seems to me that if either of these factories would have takien the time to simply put a dowel into the barrel and rolled it on a table top find out the concentricity to the boar wich the bullet is coming out, they could have at least had a point of impact above the line of sight rather than below 😅the point of aim, not even letting you see the target you're shooting at because it's below the front site. I will probably go to a gun show and trade the Wrangler for something like a semi-automatic Browning buckmark with an adjustable rear sight. It's a shame because they are truly fun to look at and handle, clean and shoot......
I've been lucky with mine, great fun to shoot! I am leery of making my heritage my trail gun because the screws do like to shake loose

I looked at them both before I purchased the Ruger. I actually like the transfer bar safety. Mine came with walnut grips and a nice holster. Any grips that fit the Ruger single six should fit the Wrangler also. Enjoyed the video.
My mind is blown with all the custom options available for grips.

Great review, buy one of each and have a blast. Both have their pluses and minuses.
They both seem to shoot fine for what they are, but I can buy a Heritage sometimes for $99.00 and the Ruger costs $199.00. The Ruger costs twice as much as the Heritage and I don't see twice the weapon. I've had trouble with Ruger quality control and Ruger's customer service on my Ruger 9mm so I am not in love with Ruger.
I am older and suffer with gout and arthritis in my hands and my son has suffered a stroke which left his left hand useless which makes loading a semi auto nearly impossible for both of us. I think the way the Heritage's cylinder locks in place when loading and unloading will make it easier for us with troubled hands. The Ruger's cylinder rolls freely and you have to line it up and hold it in place while loading and unloading which makes it more difficult and nearly impossible for my son.
For these reasons I would choose the Heritage Rough Rider over the Ruger.
I've had hand surgery and can highly recommend the Keltec P-17 if you are looking for a semiautomatic pistol. It fires 22lr and is sooooooo super easy to operate, it's downright crazy. Sometimes they can be had for less than $ 200, come with 3x 16-round mags and never seem to jam or have malfunctions.
The free wheeling cylinder in the Ruger was a deal breaker for me. Plus the Heritage looks a lot like the real deal, just like the Colt Single Action Army.

We have our heritage staged in the basement loaded with .22wmr...the missus noted it the only place in house where she didn't have quick access to a gun and she trusts the heritage (ours has been great)...but of course now I miss it at the range...I was looking at both wranglers and heritages the other day thinking about it...our gun buying budget is pretty much used up, and there other guns on the wishlist, so for now videos like this help put the comparison in mind...good job...
Excellent review. I went to my local Dunham's when the Ruger Wrangler was on sale. We (Little Boss also) liked the bronze version. I like the looks of all 3 color options. As I was buying the Wrangler I also bought a pearl birds' head gripped 4 1/2" Heritage with the WMR cylinder included because it looked so cool. Love that .22 MAG! It's loud. No felt recoil. It's expensive ammo for sure. The safety on the Heritage is Fugly! It even has an unsightly plastic y-looking MIM seam down the middle. As unsightly as it is, it's a surprisingly nifty feature even though it's easy to forget to take it off. Couldn't they knurl the thing or put some crosshatching on it? The cylinder release knobs on my S&W revolvers look exactly right. They can't Art-Deco design a button that looks like it fits?
Love both of these guns. Both of mine are accurate too.
I always preferred the Heritage. Have two of them now. Transfer bar is an advantage for the Wrangler of course. I dislike the lack of rotating clicks on the Wrangler. Both are good, just like others the Heritage are more customizable and flexible. Love Ruger in general but just not the Wrangler. Give me a single 6 and I'll love you though. Pricey but sweet. Good point on the defensive aspect of WMR. I like having the option for fun but never thought about it that way. Still, I'll pick up the bronze Wrangler if ever see it on a good sale.
That’s honestly what sold me and I was raised on ruger revolvers and are quite fond of them. For the price my next purchase will be a wrangler but I like that classic Colt action even if it’s “not as safe” as some would say.
PSA has the black birdshead and the bronze regular grip real cheap right now.
Just snagged a birdshead wrangler for 170.
Wanted a little target/plinker and figured I wouldn't shoot wmr that much so I went with the Ruger. I also have a good history with Rutgers CS.

Was debating between the Wrangler and the Rough Rider and the Rough Rider I looked at felt poorly made. Glad I bought the Wrangler and glad this video backed up my decision!
There is almost no difference in materials and quality,, but Heritage offers 35 different guns in .22 cal.... Ruger offers the same gun in three colors.

My brother in law has the Heritage. I shot it a few times and came away feeling like it was really just a toy. I picked up the Ruger a year ago. Got the burnt bronze ceracote. It came with the plastic grips and felt, well meh… Side by side shooting with my brother in law, the Ruger felt more like a real gun. The Ruger came with a discount coupon for ShopRuger. I went there and found that the Wrangler takes the same grips as the Vaquero! Picked up a beautiful set of laminated Rosewood Vaquero grips and put them on. WOW!!! It totally transformed the Wrangler. The Vaquero grips are WAAAY meatier than the stock plastic grips and the gun just fills up your hand now. I really enjoy the Wrangler now and can say that for the money, it’s a tremendous little shooter. Plinking with Aguila 40g ammo it is very consistent. And I have a number of boxes of CCI Velocitors that are my go to if I need a serious varmint pop around the farm. The Ruger just feels more substantial to me.
I chose the Heritage with Birds Head grips and 3 3/4" barrel.
Very happy with my choice.
Got it for $149.99 inc. mag cylinder. It also had a $30.00 mail in rebate making the total only $119.00.
Wish the RUGER came with longer barrel length choices and adjustable rear sight and front blade like the single six. Birds head grips options would stir some interest I bet also.
I'm a big fan of cheap fun, so both of these float my boat. That being said, if I could only have one, it'd be the Ruger Wrangler.
Every year that goes by I become a bigger fan of the 22 Winchester magnum I have carried one for over 20 years now. It is been such a great revolver cartridge for me.
I’ll take the Ruger all day long and that applies to any revolver caliber. I like to load 6 rounds and not worry about it.

I prefer the heritage rough rider, loading is easier due to the cylinder being indexed, the ruger s cylinder spins free with no indexing so it's harder to line up and load each round. Thanks.

I owned a wrangler and was great little 22. No issues for me.
What are you 5 and blind. ? Line up the holes to load. Line up the cylinder dents with the extractor arm to empty. GOOD LORD, PEOPLE ARE HELPLESS

Picked up the Wrangler and I'm in love with it. I don't find the free-spinning cylinder to be an issue after a bit of practice with a few dummy rounds, as well as a good range session.
I'll probably get a Rough Rider as well. They're so affordable there's almost no reason to NOT get one.
I bought a Ruger and am trying to get my range buddy to snag a heritage for plinking. They're so affordable theres no point not to. Plus ammo is DIRT cheap currently so why not.
Technically, the Ruger's transfer bar prevents accidental discharge by NOT absorbing and transfering the momentum from the hammer to the firing pin. Unless the trigger is pulled all the way back, the transfer bar drops out of the way and prevents the hammer from transfering energy to the firing pin.

The .22 magnum option is not that big of a deal. The cost of the .22 magnum ammunition and the ballistics out of the revolver doesn’t add much. For the price of .22 magnum I can get wad cutters for 38 and use a Blackhawk.
Do you reload or know someplace to get .38 wadcutters for cheap?
A few weeks ago I paid $17.00 for box of 50 .22mags, target rounds. The same store had .38spc target ammo for twice that.
You are the first among many I’ve viewed that had accuracy more to Ruger. Could be the one you purchased like anything could have been a little less as a Friday pistol. My Heritage shoots very good groups. I wasn’t a big fan of the Ruger even though I own and live the others I’ve grown up with and own today. I liked the action and the loading more with the Heritage even though it’s cheaper and really not by much.
I was thinking the same thing. As a matter of fact this video is the only one that had the wrangler out shooting the heritage.
And i also! And im a ruger fan for life! But not in this light on these econo line rim fires! Granit, my wrangler ss looking (w black cylndr) looks tuff! Wieght is nice too. But Heritahe much more bang for the $$. Extremely versatile, .
watching your video, I did not see where the ruger pulled ahead in groups they both did well. I have both guns myself and the only complaint I have is the trigger on my heritage is very light actually too light. I do not have a trigger pull gauge but it feels like a pound or less pull weight to me. Love both brands and I myself can not say one is better than the other on a comparative basis. Still you put out a good video, keep it going.

Great video! Love your backyard range and wish I had something like that to plink a little before dinner. Love the Heritage and did not see the Ruger as more accurate, they seemed very even.
They are almost par to each other more or less, but very different revolvers
@@rifleman17hmrshooter where the Heritage shines is the price, I got the 22lr/WMR combo for $115 a year ago and then another 22lr for $79 a month ago. 2 revolvers that can both shoot 22 Magnum for less than $200…and they work flawlessly. If a spring breaks, no big deal because you order most small parts straight from their website.

I was close to buying a Rough Rider the other day, now I’m considering the Ruger instead.
downside to the Ruger is the finish..it's not blued and will rust if not properly cleaned/stored.

These 22 single shot revolvers are great for introducing people to firearms. Put five empty 22 shells in and one live 22. Get the shooter to aim and pull the trigger without flinching. Then after a few practice pulls they get a live round. Always put the empty shells in or you will damage the firing pin and cylinder.
Heritage finish wears. On the Heritage the many openers find the threads in the front of the barrel that secure the ejection rod cover screw are not well machined and require loctite to hold the screw tight.
Heritage has a wide array of grips, barrel lengths, has the carbine, has a 9 shot option and has optional fiberoptic sights.
Heritage trigger is fairly light and consistent.
The aluminum will pit inside the frame around the forcing cone, but the gun will last thousands of rounds.
With the fiberoptic sights the heritage will reliably hit a golf ball at 15 yards.
I bought the Rough Rider. It's a toy but the 22WMR option was the deciding choice.
.22 mags are about $23 a box if you can find them

I would have expected you to shoot better with the Heritage because you've had that one a long time. Personally I went with the Wrangler for my cheap plinker because I already had a Ruger GP100. They come in about 12 different colors and single six grips fit them. I got pearl for my silver wrangler. Ruger has listened to their customers and have just released a birdshead model. I expect to see different barrel lengths.
I'd say that one big difference between the paper targets and the metal ones was that the former were black, and harder to pick with the dark front sights, while the latter were white, and thus a much better contrast with the front sight.

Heritage Palmetto Arms revolvers the sights are just plopped on. Out of the box many shoot left of center. They just need to be trued with filing or slightly bending by error and trial.
Not a great fit and finish but $100 small recreation plinker is a fair value.
I have a Heritage w a 6 1/2 Barrel and wood grips. Love how it shoots and how close to the Colt it is.
Definitely save the wmr rounds for self defense specifically though, unless you really just like blowing stuff up for less money than .357. Just because LR is so much less expensive to practice with.
I have both of these, but my heritage has the 6.5 inch barrel. I shoot them both terribly, but I don't practice with them nearly enough. I'm planning on just making the heritage my full time magnum.
My inner 10 year old got the best of me and I got the heritage with the snake skin print grips... yeah, that wears off quick..lol.
I believe testing shows that the Ruger gets more velocity from the same ammo due to tighter tolerances. I do like the option of adjustable sights on the Heritage. So it's a mixed bag. Maybe a used Ruger Single Six would be a better choice than either of these. Thanks for sharing.

I really want a Ruger Single 9, but for no reason at all its not legal California. I have a few Taurus revolvers atm. 856. 856 UL, 856 Executive Grade, and soon a model 65. I also have a Chiappa 1873-22. The Chiappa is same quality as heritage. Its okay, nothing special. But i dont care if i lose it or break it either. Good thing about these guns is you can take a $165 gun and take it to the woods and off the beaten trail. If you get it beat up it doesnt matter. Im thinking about getting the Wrangler as a backup plinker. I also have a Ruger SR22 and Mark 3 Target. But idk why, I just prefer revolvers. In 2011 when i turned 21 i bought myself a Charter Arms pathfinder. With no prior firearms experience, and wanting some sort or self protection without much recoil i bought a 2" snubby chambered in .22 WMR, threw some checkered wood grips on it, and loaded her up with CCI maxi mags. I was the first in my circle of friends to start taking concealed carry seriously. That thing went with me everywhere. I got a little more confident and replaced it with a Rossi R351. Now despite having glocks, berettas, CZs, and rugers I keep going back to my .38s.

Having had both... And having had to order parts for one, I will take the Ruger all day.
And while neither are "traditional" SAAs revolvers, the safety on the Heritage is just... A turn off.
As far as customizing parts on a Ruger, any part for the Single Six, will work on the Wrangler.
I've handled both and out of the box the sights are much better on the Ruger Wrangler. The sights on the Heritage are just plain awful. IMO the wrangler also feels more solid in the hand.

The heritage offers the option of 22 mag, many options on size and finish and grip choice and value. PSA regularly sells these for under $100 and it's a great pistol for 100 bucks. The only thing I really do not like is the safety on the heritage.
do you mean under $200? i've never seen em priced under $100, though i surely would like to! (i got mine as a gift, probably wouldn't have bought otherwise,, but now know that was a mistake,, a great little gun (with cheap feeling safety)

I have two of the Rough Riders (one is the long barrel) and also the Ruger Wrangler. I give a slight nod to the Heritage revolver as it's smoother to cycle and I like the trigger better. Nothing at all wrong with the Ruger as it's a great guy, but my 2 Heritage guns in polished blue finish are very attractive and well made. Bonus with the Heritage is the extra cylinder that's made to shoot .22 WMR. The WMR round has some nice sauce and makes it a excellent home defense round. If you doubt that, go shoot some melons, etc and watch them explode. Also check out their firepower on various videos here. That said, no wrong choices.
Since the barrel is sized for WMR, it also means you get higher accuracy firing WMR rounds.
as of today, 10/4/22, there are many options for wrangler grips, in case that's a selling point for anyone. My $35 checkered rosewood grips will be in any day now. I've also heard that new style blackhawk and vaquero grips will fit, but i cannot confirm or deny. hope this helps
I like my Heritages , I had a Ruger Wrangler for a month and sold it.
I'd rather have the 22 mag option.
Grip selections for both models are vast . Wrangler grips interchange with single-six.

I bought a Heritage Rough Rider and have regretted it ever since. Gun has hardly worked in 2 years. Looked at Ruger last week and there is no comparison. Ruger is high quality and built very well. Heritage is junk.
I like the option of 22LR and/or 22 mag, but when the Heritage breaks (And it will in my experience) you won't have the option of either.
The main issue I've seen is when you fire with the Magnum cylinder, it loosens up the screws and you have to tighten them. Otherwise, so far and a few thousand rounds of both, that's been the only issue.... Save the initial QC problems with my first one

I bought two. Hammer spring broke on one, trigger spring broke on the other...within a month.
@@randymoyer7871 sometimes with all guns some a made better than others my heritage has shot around 1500 22lr and magums and like he said everytime i take it home to clean i have to tighten those screws but other than that its a solid gun not to mention i got it used for 50 bucks
Point of aim - point of impact on Heritage necessitates alot of Kentucky windage and Tennessee elevation, facts...
To choose the more poorly made firearm because it can also fire .22 WRM is just short sighted. The ruger has a lifetime warranty and is far better made. Plus, that God awful safety makes the gun hideous and the owner's manual tells you to still leave one cylinder empty, cowboy style. No thanks, I will stick with the ruger.

I've handled the Heritage and found I could not tolerate that safety, so no I did not buy it. The phrase I used was "the more poorly made". Emphasis is on the word "more" not "poorly. But no I don't own a Heritage, I own an old Ruger single six .22 which is an heirloom quality gun I picked up for $200, used, about 13 or so years ago.
Comparatively, both these guns are "more poorly made." But the design (need to load 5) and the appearance (due to that ugly plastic pointless safety) makes the Wrangler the far better gun. IMHO
The lifetime warranty also reflects Ruger's confidence in the build quality.

You failed to mention the warranties. Ruger Wrangler has a lifetime warranty and the Heritage RR is one year.

the Wrangler has a lot of things going for it. but I like the way the Heritage operates and sounds.
Heritage has a Model called the Tactical Cowboy that I think is really cool. it's a special edition so I don't know how long they'll be selling it for.

save your money or keep both. I wanted to like the Ruger, but I most always grab the Heritage since my two have excellent triggers.

I own both. The Ruger is a great revolver. However, the non clicking cylinder is slow to load and unload due to having it in the exact spot to load n unload. And my Rough Rider is more accurate, every round and any brand, than the Ruger. But it’s still a great revolver and it looks great! I got the burnt bronze finish

Eagle grips for the ruger I have ram horn grips for mine looks great they have all kinds
chigs grips makes the most beautiful ones i own or have seen custom but very reasonable price (wood) for either revolver.
For those considering a RR over A wrangler because of the 22 magnum.option you,re not gaining anything over a HV 22 with the short barrel..also compared to ruger quality RR,s are just junk..You,re gonna find one that works fine once in a while but a wrangler works all the Tim's and is much better quality and great CS.
The Heritage's safety is a detriment.

I've got three Heritages, but other better-built single-actions. I bought them, like I buy cheap guitars - for display, and for teaching the youngins about gun safety. Same with my awesome, Henry Golden Boy. Fun, fun, fun.
Heritages are generally known to be more accurate than the Rugers. That is, unless things have changed in the past few years.
The thing with the Heritages, you have to compensate for the sights, which are almost always off. Most reports are that they shoot 'high left'. Go figure.
Lots of very happy Heritage owners out there, but once you get past around 1000 rounds, they can go south on you. Heck, by then, you've gotten your monies worth and you can hang em on the wall, on a stand, or start replacing parts. Springs are the only thing I'm willing to replace on one.
Would I recommend them? Heck yes! At least, in .22. I believe they stopped making the big bores. I don't know too much about them.
do they both have the same trigger pull weight? It looks like the Ruger has a stiffer trigger for watching the video.
I had an issue with the Heritage while shooting the .22 mag cylinder. After shooting a dozen rounds, the cylinder froze. I had to wait for it to cool down before I could even turn the cylinder. They use very poor metal. Never had issues like that with my Ruger's.
I also had screws loosening up on me

The lowest-priced Ruger is about $70 more than the lowest-priced Heritage, and it doesn't have 2-guns-in-1 flexibility of the Heritage.
I prefer the Ruger. If they would make a limited model steel frame to fire magnums, I would buy one. I LOVE the safety of the transfer bar.
They do offer a model that fires magnum with interchangeable cylinders. Look into the single six, better sights, milled steel frame, same mechanicals but lot more money. Shooting 22wmr is lots of fun but at the same time cost more money too. Cheers bud!
Thanks for the heart. It's called the Single Six. Very nice and solid revolver. In today's market it cost three to four times the price of a Wrangler. If you collect, it's a good buy. If you just want to shoot, stick with the Wrangler. Thanks for the update.

If you are testing for accuracy, S-L-O-W D-O-W-N. Take more time for each shot. I know some of it was edited. I could see it, but not all of it was, and you rushed through something that is important that you slow down.
My Heritage with the adjustable rear sights and fiber optic front sight ( both came with the gun) shoots amazing.
The Heritage also has a nine shot version. In LR and WMR. The Ruger is only a six shot. At lease for now.
The heritage is a 5 shot gun. Cant safely load one in all 6 cuz RR doesnt have the block on safety of the fine little ruger.

I bought 2 heritage rough riders and had to send them both back as they would only fire half the time... Buy a Ruger

Brother, we’re talking about two cheap 22 single action revolvers here.
I don’t care enough about this topic to feel strongly about it either way.
But the rough rider comes in a 6.5” model and ignoring the ugly safety it’s a far better representation of an actual colt.
Hence why I prefer it.

My '71' three screw single six operates the same as the Heritage

Not sure how old the video is but I was at the gun store yesterday 2,23,24 and they had a wrangler there with both cylinders

Yeah the original Wrangler was 22lr only, but the super wrangler is modeled after the single six and it's interchangeable 22lr/22 mag
If you want a modernized color and no 22 magnum go with for the Ruger but if you want the old school look and with 22 magnum go with the heritage

What kinda accuracy results are you expecting shooting free handed that are going to provide any valid conclusions. At least shoot from a rest. Both handguns are way more accurate than you. The Heritage crushes the Ruger for value. Picked up a 6.5 in Heritage locally for $124, inside the box there was a coupon or instructions on how to get a magnum cylinder (or an additional 22lr ) cylinder for $29.99 with free shipping,.from Heritage. For $35 you can get a pretty engraved one also free shipping. All in with tax included I got the Heritage combo for $163. Ruger was $200 for the least expensive one I found on line. That’s $212 for me + ffl fee if I can’t find it locally ( it was available with free shipping from PSA). Finally, I hate the fact that when loading the Ruger the cylinder doesn’t hold its loading position, the cylinder just spins.
