Thank you dad took me in 1973 vs Oakland first time every to see a Baseball game i am 58 today thank God still here but this brought me back to that day with my dad and uncle Al who are no longer with us but i know they were watching this with me as the tears roll down my face thank you for this
Well, I guess you could say that I was a fourteen-year-old " nobody" with a camera. A super 8 silent camera, as that was all that was available and affordable to a fourteen-year-old in 1973. And there aren't many of these films out there. My intent was to share a bit of history with all of you, rather than sit on these films for forty years. I hope that it has brought back some great memories for some of you.
Thank you for sharing this! This is how Yankee Stadium should have remained. It was a beautiful and historic stadium. My favorite. Thanks again!! Rich Ozimek
Brings back memories.... I was at Yankee Stadium a few times in 1973 also bring the first time going there. I believe it's was Bat Day and Ball Day. A few pitchers in the Bull pen sign my Base Ball during the game that you toss the ball down to them, they signed it and then throw it back to you. Players do not that anymore I am almost sure. 1973 was the year Steinbrenner bought the Yankees from CBS which purchase it in 1960.
Thanks for sharing this with us. It's kind of funny how my first season of awareness of the Yankees was 1976 when the renovated Stadium opened and as a consequence the old Stadium has always seemed like something distant to me. Things like this make what I didn't get to experience much more real.
Love this. I remember watching this on TV as a devoted 11 year old fan and watched Mickey hitting a home run. I was so excited to tell my dad when he came home from work. Thank you for this video Sir.
I went to the Yankee Stadium Finale vs. the Tigers on Sunday Sept. 30, 1973. I still have my seat ... Sec. 33 Box 165E seat 5 .. Made of wood, steel, and a lot of paint, unlike the plastic garbage they have today.
Great footage. Used to attend a lot of games in '73 especially the Sunday DHs. If anyone remembers the last 8 rows of the upper deck were considered general admission. We would get there super early for BP and sit right behind home plate in the 8th row from the top for $1.50 if I remember correctly. The key was to get a spot between the girders to have an clear view of the field. Great times as a kid growing up.
The best thing my mom ever do for me was take me to the original Yankee stadium before it was refurbished.i would always watch old timers day on tv and get a thrill seeing the legends DiMaggio and the mick ,Berra ,scooter the good ole days
OMG!!!I was at that game with my parents. Will never forget the game against the A's but also we had box seats right below the next deck up. Well someone dumped a beer n went all over my mothers back. We were sitting on the 3rd base side. Was a very hot day n humid day!
Thanks stadiumguy! I was there with my Dad. The final Old Timers Day in that grand old ballyard in the Bronx. Mickey hit one off Whitey! Funny, I don't remember who won the regulation game...
I was there too. Oakland won but the Mickey home run was one of my greatest memories in baseball. Two long fouls and then the place went absolutely crazy, almost like winning the Series.
Wow.. It's amazing to see this footage. I actually attended the game on August 11, 1973 I went with Sandy Amoros of the Brooklyn Dodgers, he was playing in the Old Timers Game. Great Memories! Thanks for posting clip.
Great video! Thanks for posting! I was also 14 in '73 and remember that season so well; Yanks started off slow but caught fire in June, helped by new pitchers Pat Dobson and Sam McDowell, and vault into first place. Early July, Bobby Murcer and Ron Blomberg are on the cover of Sports Illustrated! I believe the Yanks' biggest lead in the division got to be around 3 or 4 games in July. I was so excited, figuring this might be the year. Started razzing a lot my friends who were Mets fans, as the Mets were struggling. Of course, Yanks faded in August and September, and finished miles behind the Orioles. Compounding my misery was the Mets going on a late season run on their way to the World Series.
Fading is putting it mildly. They collapsed, LOL. Started with a double header loss to the Red Sox on July 4. I remember those two games like it was yesterday, watching them on WPIX. Was not a Yankee fan. The White Sox were my team. They had a similar season, good start, a period of time in first place, then a fast fade. I could sympathize with Yankee fans.
@@replaybb We were at a family barbecue, and were all ready to have fun, eat and watch the games. We ate, but the Yankee fans among us didn't have fun, LOL. They were in first place and sailing smooth and hit the wall that day. That same year there was a twi-light double header where my White Sox came in to play the Yankees. The Sox were already fading by that time, though I think the Yankees were still in first place. Wilbur Wood started-yes, started-and lost both games and that pretty much finished all hopes for us Chisox fans that year. I watched both those games on WPIX, but probably didn't stick around for the end of the second game.
I watched on WPIX that DH vs the White Sox and well remember Wood starting both games! I believe he got knocked out early in the first game. I recall a Roy White grand slam in one of the games.
Went to this game. My father liked Old Timer's Day, so I would guess we went to every Old Timer's Day for both the Yankees and Mets every year from 1969 to around 1975. Old Timers Day 1975 was particularly interesting because not only was it at Shea, but it was Billy Martin's first game as Yankee manager. Nobody could guess what a farce that would eventually become. I pretty sure that was the last time we went to an Old Timer's Day.
Thanks for this post. I can't believe 40 years went by so quickly. The new Stadium is quite nice, but nothing matches the feeling I got steping into this one and hearing the voice of Bob Sheppard live for the fist time. What a beautiful old ballpark she was.
For a fourteen year old in 1973, you sure did a fine job. Thank you for your time and effort for posting this video. I can still see that Anacin sign in my mind when I went to the old stadium after they remodeled it. Personally, I think the new stadium sucks.
I love how in the left field outfield bleachers you can see the line of the original fence that gave way to the 490 ft center field when it first opened. They didn't think in home runs back then
I was there that day the Mick parked his last one, I’m 64 now but that is one memory no sickness old age amnesia you name it I will take with me to my grave, I remember every bit of that day
This was the last year of the original Yankee stadium before it went into renovations which took two years but you can't emulate the Ball park of what it originally was. Many New Yorkers will always rember the Original Yankee Stadium.
I got to go to the old Yankee Stadium in '73 in a game against Baltimore. Sat in the left field bleachers. Only people there besides my family were three guys of around 30 years of age. One of them turned to me and said: "Want a dip of chaw, boy?" "No. Thanks" "Gotta chew chaw, boy, if you're gonna be a part of this Yankee ballclub" He He...he said that right in front of my mother too,.
I always wondered when they did the renovations how did they do the upper deck? As you see the upper deck box seats before the renovations only had like 4 rows then you have the corridor that leads to concessions from each section. After the renovations you have like 12 rows for the box seats and the main sections look the same(# of rows wise) then the corridors which lead to concessions had to have been moved up to accommodate the bigger box seats. Unless they demolished the entire upper deck and redid it from scratch...??
What struck me watching this is how many empty seats there were. The Yankees stunk at this time and baseball was losing its appeal to the NFL I mean old timers day at Yankee Stadium and not even half full😯 NYY were a floundering franchise under CBS who owned the team b4 Stienbrenner. The seats were empty when the fans were first let in before batting practice. Most fans showed up later, as you can see later in the video. This was normal at the time.

This is wonderful. I love the shots and unique look of the old Yankee Stadium.

September 30, 1973 was Ralph Houk’s final day as Yankee manager. He quit after the 1973 season because he got tired of the “boo birds” at the Stadium.
@@frederickrapp5396 Quit is kind of a euphemism. He got out the door before Steinbrenner could fire him. That was George's first year.
This is for every Yankee fan old enough to have rooted for Steve Kline to get his math degree.

The Mets sucked that year. Finished one or two games above .500. They lucked into the playoffs. Any team can win 3 of 5.

The acoustics of the Old Stadium were terrific.
It had an amazing echo and Bob Sheppard's voice!
Mr. Sheppard had his cadence and timing down perfectly to work WITH the echoes.. not against them. What a voice!
Thanks for posting! Brings back memories, I was there that day. I sat pretty close to where Mickey Mantle's homer in the Old Timers game landed.

They should've made the new stadium look more like this one
they did
I meant the field dimensions ( 461 ft in CF) The low walks in right and left field and the bullpens where where they used to be.

They still should be playing baseball HERE!!!
For sure
I'm my mind I can still see the stenciled sign on the back of home plates backstop " NO PEPPER GAMES ALLOWED "
It took me years to learn what pepper meant. The “No gambling permitted” I understood.
My first game was the last game ever played here before the rebuild. I was only 5 but glad my dad took me.

That was Baseballs Cathederal biggest crime against architecture in NYC since they tore down the original Penn Station.
Well, the old park had those endless pedestrian ramps and dozens of girders obstructing people’s views, so ...
Bleacher section was huge and a country mile from home plate.
if i am not mistaken, that is the day mickey hit his last homer in the stadium. off of his buddy whitey in the ot game.
Back in the day when day games were played at 2:35pm unlike today 1pm
In those years 1964 seemed like a century ago.
1973, takes me back.
The souvenir programs were replicas of the 1923 season programs. Jacob Ruppert was on the cover.
