Back in the day when day games were played at 2:35pm unlike today 1pm
The stadium was looking old and rundown here. No wonder George renovated the joint after the season
I was at the last game of the ‘73 season a loss to the Tigers.
Did you rip out any seats like other fans did that day?
...A hole in my heart.
My mother, uncle, their cousin grew up poor in brooklyn. My grand aunt and great grandmother used to save all week to tale them to baseball games. In the cheap bleacher seats. Wish I could see pictures of those people in that seating area…and that era up closer. Yankees Stadium was the only MLB stadium I ever went to in NYC, as a kid but that was 1981.
looks like they just kept part of the original outside and built a new stadium behind it
I miss the old stadium. Great footage here. Thank you for sharing this. Nice musical accompaniment also.👍🏻
Attended my first game in 1957 . Loved the original stadium
Trivia what was the old Yankee stadium facade made of
Yankee stadium renovation
The original stadium is always the best and even the one that they played that was renovated was a cathedral but this one is just a corporate stadium the latest one
Actually really good for their size
I’m a die hard Mets fan, but they should have never have gotten rid of that stadium the Yankees all that baseball history in that ballpark crazy.
You can only renovate a place so many times, not to mention it became incredibly outdated and crammed. They apparently were planning a new one since the 80’s
@@RYMAN1321 Fenwey park, wrigley field, are still around and Dodger Stadium is pretty old now and it’s still around.
The fact that this was shot in 1974-1975 and looks like we should see FDR or somebody makes me feel real old. I know it was Super 8 but this looks really dated.
That’s because it IS dated. 😉 No HD, 1080p, 4K, or smartphones back then, my friend. We used what we had and made the best of it. There’s not a lot of film of the reno out there in the wild, unless someone is holding out on us. 😉
Great performances 👍 very impressive
Awesome!
Went to this game. My father liked Old Timer's Day, so I would guess we went to every Old Timer's Day for both the Yankees and Mets every year from 1969 to around 1975. Old Timers Day 1975 was particularly interesting because not only was it at Shea, but it was Billy Martin's first game as Yankee manager. Nobody could guess what a farce that would eventually become. I pretty sure that was the last time we went to an Old Timer's Day.
Thank you dad took me in 1973 vs Oakland first time every to see a Baseball game i am 58 today thank God still here but this brought me back to that day with my dad and uncle Al who are no longer with us but i know they were watching this with me as the tears roll down my face thank you for this
The Original should NEVER had been remodeled , instead they should have Built a Brand New Yankee Stadium nearby . The Original Yankee Stadium should have been made into a Basball Museum. 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
This was the last year of the original Yankee stadium before it went into renovations which took two years but you can't emulate the Ball park of what it originally was. Many New Yorkers will always rember the Original Yankee Stadium.
The best thing my mom ever do for me was take me to the original Yankee stadium before it was refurbished.i would always watch old timers day on tv and get a thrill seeing the legends DiMaggio and the mick ,Berra ,scooter the good ole days
They should have kept the original Yankee Stadium instead of totally tearing it down. The original was destroyed after the 1973 season. They would not tear down Fenway or Wrigley so why Yankee Stadium? I am glad that I saw Yankee games at the original Yankee Stadium.
Still a hole in my soul. Even after all these years.
The stadium was being renovated when I was born in 1974.
It was torn down and a new one was built. A renovation is the wrong word.
@@chrisnalina1755It wasn’t completely torn down. I know a lot of the seats were replaced, especially in the upper deck. But the main structure remained intact. Parts of the main structure was altered to accommodate the ramps to the upper levels. I’m assuming the locker rooms were updated as well.
@@dorothysewing9997 The original stadium was completely torn down and a new stadium was built. I frankly do not know why you are so misinformed about it. You need to look at photos of it and you will see that for yourself.
I was there. Mickey hit one foul and asked Whitey to groove one and Mickey drilled that one into thr left field seats.
They should of built the new stadium on the footprint of the old and with a new look same field
if i am not mistaken, that is the day mickey hit his last homer in the stadium. off of his buddy whitey in the ot game.
This happened before l was born in 1976 until l came to the house between 1982-1983 until around 2008!
You wouldn’t renovate the Colliseum in Rome - it’s a stadium of great historical significance. The same for Yankee Stadium. If baseball had a scared shrine, it was Yankee Stadium. The original stadium.
The original Yankee Stadium (1923-73) was America’s Roman Coliseum!
I love how in the left field outfield bleachers you can see the line of the original fence that gave way to the 490 ft center field when it first opened. They didn't think in home runs back then
Jethro tull in action😆
Yankee Stadium 1976-2008 was awful because it was an enclosed bowl stadium that could be plopped down anywhere. It's the same complaint I have with Citifield today. At least with the new Yankee Stadium you have the backdrop of the Bronx buildings, tenements and it gives the ballpark an authentic New York feel.
They ruined it when they renovated it... Squeeze a few more years out of the old stadium the infrastructure was falling apart... for all its supposed flaws the new stadium is beautiful
Steinbrenner wanted this..he ruined one of the great wonders of the world. The old stadium should be here just like Fenway and Wrigley.
The deal to renovate the stadium was made before Steinbrenner owned the team.
@@davezanko9051 He is referring to the renovated version.
@@johnr033 yes, and that's his misconception. Steinbrenner didn't own the team when the renovations were agreed upon. He wasn't responsible for them, despite what Alan was saying. He definitely benefited from them, as as attendance went up allowing Steinbrenner to pay big bucks in the then-new free agent market to win the 1977 World Series (and again in 1981).
Thanks
I’m surprised they didn’t add more seats in left field. Even with Monument Park and the bullpen they still had extra space. They could’ve drawn at least 60,000 fans and more like they did in the first stadium.
I think the bleachers and the outside wall were the only parts left from the original stadium. The rest was gutted and the field was lower five feet.
@@billschipper1718 Nonsense. All THREE levels of the stands remained intact. The lower level was extended. The mezzanine level was shortened. The upper deck had 10 new rows added to the top of it.
Went to third game in the revamped stadium I believe 1976, they played the twins and stadium was three days old and graffiti on it!!
I bet there was graffiti still on the #4 train back them
1973, takes me back.
Wow.. It's amazing to see this footage. I actually attended the game on August 11, 1973 I went with Sandy Amoros of the Brooklyn Dodgers, he was playing in the Old Timers Game. Great Memories! Thanks for posting clip.
It was bad enough taking down the original but then after the 76 version brought many titles and grew into Yankee history they totally tore it down. Never been to the new one and never will be
Well that's just plain stupid the new Yankee stadium is FANTASTIC
Once they remodeled in the 70s Yankee Stadium became a dump and the new one is beautiful and vastly Superior!
@@SuperPhilly5 its now just like any of the other new stadiums. The magic is gone, the ghosts are gone. Just like one of the other new stadiums. I've been to 24 MLB parks some new some old some in between. Its a nice stadium but the mystique is gone forever.
It was still a beautiful stadium the day they played there last game there. Nothing like walking out of the tunnel to go to your seat and see the green grass organ playing and the white facade as a backdrop. Sublime
OMG!!!I was at that game with my parents. Will never forget the game against the A's but also we had box seats right below the next deck up. Well someone dumped a beer n went all over my mothers back. We were sitting on the 3rd base side. Was a very hot day n humid day!
To think the idiotic Steinbrenner family leveled this Cathedral.
Like most amateurs with a camera you pan way too fast and don't keep the camera steady.
You’ll have to forgive me...I was a fourteen year old kid with a jittery Super 8 camera and was limited to a three minute roll of film. iPhones weren’t invented yet.
My first game was the last game ever played here before the rebuild. I was only 5 but glad my dad took me.
Then the idiot family had it torn down.
In those years 1964 seemed like a century ago.
The original stadium was something special. It had an amazing history and a atmosphere of a time gone by. I was there when the astronauts landed on the moon. Magical place. I was also there for the grand opening of the renovated stadium. My fears of it being ruined quickly faded as it was obviously still the House that Ruth built. The new Stadium is quite magnificent with all of the bells and whistles, even keeping the same field dimensions as the renovated one, but I will always have a special place in my heart for the old Yankee Stadium!
It was dilapidated and decrepit
I remember terrified ascending the upper deck of the renovated stadium in 1982 w.o. a section of railing to grab hold of and looking and then having to step on 'cracked and then patched' steps. It always looked musty and full of coal dust don't even get anyone started on the mens room. Yes a treasure for any real sports fan but also an ugly eyesore especially if one has seen games elsewhere aside from NYC and its' twin Fenway in Boston.
0 0:00 0 0:00 3:00 0:00 0:00
The renovation sucked all the character out of the place, turned it into just another ball park.
It was like painting over the Mona Lisa
For a fourteen year old in 1973, you sure did a fine job. Thank you for your time and effort for posting this video. I can still see that Anacin sign in my mind when I went to the old stadium after they remodeled it. Personally, I think the new stadium sucks.
