Once on a Yankee telecast, it was said that Steinbrenner was convinced by a conversation with actor Cary Grant to keep at least some of the famous frieze of the upper deck. He had to be CONVINCED to keep it? The frieze was the crowning distinctive jewel of the historical Stadium. George put a token reproduction of the glorious facade at the back of the bleachers in centerfield. In terms of artistic and architectural sensitivity, The Boss was a Neanderthal.
You wouldn’t renovate the Colliseum in Rome - it’s a stadium of great historical significance. The same for Yankee Stadium. If baseball had a scared shrine, it was Yankee Stadium. The original stadium.
For what the city paid in cost overruns, they could have knocked the whole place down and built a beautiful new stadium that would have still been in use today. Such is life in the big city.
I was driving taxi when renovation began and I used to take a steady construction worker down every morning and drove my cab into the back that was opened for equipment right to the middle of the field I wish now I took some pictures but at the time it was no big deal!
My mother, uncle, their cousin grew up poor in brooklyn. My grand aunt and great grandmother used to save all week to tale them to baseball games. In the cheap bleacher seats. Wish I could see pictures of those people in that seating area…and that era up closer. Yankees Stadium was the only MLB stadium I ever went to in NYC, as a kid but that was 1981.
I was born in 72 & obviously never got to go the old Stadium. I guess if you'd been going their for years you certainly would develop an affection towards it, & of course it held countless memories. But the mid-70's renovation could be justified from an aesthetic standpoint as well as an urban renewal idea. The stadium was outdated ( view-obstructing pillars). I though the renovated stadium was a gem. A beautiful gem. The one now is a shrine to excess & greed. Yankee Stadiun no longer exists.
That was thirty five years ago!!. And I remember Bobby Murcer R.I.P. bieng so frustrated at Shea because (Yankees played there during this remodling) balls that went out at Yankee Stadium would come up just short at Shea. Thanks from me to
How did they redo the upper deck tunnels to get you to and from the concessions/seats? In the original Stadium there were only like 5 rows of box seats or whatever for each upper deck section before you had the tunnels to take you to the concessions and in the renovated version you had like 14 rows of box seats or whatever before you had the tunnels. I'm guessing they filled all the old tunnels with cement and added seats in their space then had to carve out new tunnels further up in the upper deck and then the original level of concessions for upper deck was raised up a few feet??....
That is exactly how it was done. A whole new upper deck concourse was built higher up and twelve rows were added to the back of the upper deck to balance it. It was then supported with cables that were threaded down to the foundation.
You had it posted here before - where did the title & performer of the background track go? That s$@t rocks! Must play it down in the Caymans when I get there. I tried looking for it on Amazon & I-Tunes to no avail 4 months ago. :(
The renovations took a lot of the charm out of the place, but still, when you went to a game, it had a "feeling", a sense of history. The new place has no soul.....the interior especially looks like every other generic HOK park. The moat aisle downstairs is a disgrace in itself. Once the old timers retire and their new park is only half full, the NYY might then wish they had kept their old park. Who will want go into the Bronx to see "the great pretender" (i.e. NYS) anyway?
I've been a Yankee fan since the reopening in April '76. This footage is nothing less than fantastic! Has this ever been part of Video/DVD documentary? Anyway, thanks a hell of a lot for sharing.
They should have kept the original Yankee Stadium instead of totally tearing it down. The original was destroyed after the 1973 season. They would not tear down Fenway or Wrigley so why Yankee Stadium? I am glad that I saw Yankee games at the original Yankee Stadium.
Yankee Stadium 1976-2008 was awful because it was an enclosed bowl stadium that could be plopped down anywhere. It's the same complaint I have with Citifield today. At least with the new Yankee Stadium you have the backdrop of the Bronx buildings, tenements and it gives the ballpark an authentic New York feel.
They ruined it when they renovated it... Squeeze a few more years out of the old stadium the infrastructure was falling apart... for all its supposed flaws the new stadium is beautiful
I thought that they were saving the field and first deck as an amateur park. They're knocking down the whole thing and uprooting the whole field? This video actually made me cry. The music was perfect for this video.
I miss the ORIGINAL Yankee stadium, not the post 1973 imitation. Haven't been to the brand new one, but can't imagine it compares favorably to the house that Ruth built.
I'm a Tom Landry-era Dallas Cowboys fan, since 1963. IMO, the 1970s renovation should have never happened. They could have had some minor renovations, like Wrigley Field and Fenway Park. I never was lucky enough to travel to NY to see "The House That Ruth Built" There's nothing for me to see at the new stadium.
It was bad enough taking down the original but then after the 76 version brought many titles and grew into Yankee history they totally tore it down. Never been to the new one and never will be
@@SuperPhilly5 its now just like any of the other new stadiums. The magic is gone, the ghosts are gone. Just like one of the other new stadiums. I've been to 24 MLB parks some new some old some in between. Its a nice stadium but the mystique is gone forever.

The original Stadium was an absolute wreck when Steinbrenner had it renovated and it was badly in need of the repairs. There was simply no more waiting. It had to be done. The only problem is that the stadium was raped of any charm and iconic looks it once had. It was turned into a 70s turd design that was to quickly look so dated and drab, but that at the time made it look like all the other new stadiums built in the 70s. It was just about completely destroyed. The legendary copper frieze that hung over the upper deck for nearly 50 years was removed and completely melted down for scrap along with the beams that held up the original deck. The field was all dug up and lowered several feet and the dimensions changed drastically, so the field after renovation IS NOT the same field that Ruth and Mantle and all the other early legends played on no matter what anyone would have liked to believe. It was not even the same top soil. All that was trucked in. Only parts of the dark and dank interior and the one gate was left along with some of the original steel framework. Everything else WAS GUTTED! It was really only a patch job to put off what would eventually be needed: a completely new stadium. It really could have been named a different name cause it really was an almost completely new stadium anyway. The post renovated stadium was truely already a Steinbrenner stadium. Why so many keep kidding themselves into thinking the 70s crap stadium was the same one Ruth and many other early legends played in is beyond me. It really wasn't the same one. Not really. It was destroyed long ago. It ceased to be The House that Ruth Built when they destroyed it back in the 70s. So after only a few decades more, why not just level it? They had already nearly done that already anyway by turning it into the monstrosity they did. Ya it would have been nice to have kept it in the same spot, but then your just being rediculous. It's not like it moved across town. It is directly across the street. You could have literally thrown a stone and hit it, they built the current one so close. The "new" Yankee Stadium is absolutely beautiful and only when you are actually there and walk up to it, and into it, do you see just how amazing it is. It looks more like the original Stadium than the renovated one ever did while at the same time has all the modern conveniences that simply would not have been possible with just another renovation. It looks so grand and regal that even visiting teams and fans are always impressed. The Yankees are now in a Stadium that is worthy of the greatest Dynasty in sports history. No other stadium today even comes close to looking as amazing as the current Yankee Stadium. Not even close. You want one from the early 1900s? Then go to that green turd Fenway and have fun waiting in line for 30 minutes just to get some food or take a piss. Then again, just go in the hallways cause half the time it already smells like piss anyway. You don't need to sit in an old dump to feel the history of a team. The Yankees have more history than any one building could possibly contain. They are simply the greatest team in sports history.
I agree 100%. People need to stop kidding them selves with the stadium in the 70's to 2008. I love that they put the frieze, getting rid of the frieze was so stupid.
dtnetlurker Finally! Someone talking sense about this topic...for the past 8 years it's annoying to hear fans complain about the new Stadium saying a new one wasn't needed. I loved the renovated Stadium more than anyone but the halls were dank and gloomy and cramped and stinky. I finally went to the new one last year and was so impressed and blown away. And hey in another 30-40 years when this new Stadium is obsolete they can build another one on the old site. Anyway, thanks for talking some sense, pal.
dtnetlurker Steinbrenner didn't tear down the old, old Stadium! Part of the deal that MLB approved (the sale of Yanks from CBS to Steinbrenner ), was that NYC condemn Yankee Stadium. And they had just a few years to either refurbish or replace. Of course Steinbrenner took all the credit but it really wasn't his doing! I notice everyone here are not true Yankee fans that went to hundreds of games, had season tickets, went to postseason games, etc. Oh, well.
Great post except for the fact that Steinbrenner had nothing to do with the mid 70s renovation. That was all engineered by team President Mike Burke in 1972. He got the city to agree to a renovation starting at the end of 73 and concluding prior to 76. Steinbrenner just happened to become the owner in January of 73, but he deserves no credit for what transpired between the end of 1973 and the beginning of 1976.
@@johnr033 yes, and that's his misconception. Steinbrenner didn't own the team when the renovations were agreed upon. He wasn't responsible for them, despite what Alan was saying. He definitely benefited from them, as as attendance went up allowing Steinbrenner to pay big bucks in the then-new free agent market to win the 1977 World Series (and again in 1981).
Was the cathedral of baseball , the home of champions, the house that Ruth built...THANK YOU George Steinbrenner, you should have stayed in Cleveland...you are not missed , you were a disgrace to the pinstripes.
The fact that this was shot in 1974-1975 and looks like we should see FDR or somebody makes me feel real old. I know it was Super 8 but this looks really dated.
That’s because it IS dated. 😉 No HD, 1080p, 4K, or smartphones back then, my friend. We used what we had and made the best of it. There’s not a lot of film of the reno out there in the wild, unless someone is holding out on us. 😉
More like a clone of Dodger Stadium. At least when it first opened. Yankee Stadium's post-renovated form was a bit of a Dodger Stadium clone as well. Angel Stadium's history of being expanded for football and then downsized back is fascinating and explains some of its stranger quirks.
Dodger Stadium was inspired by the original 1923 version of Yankee Stadium. It makes sense since the team was moved from New York City. Being it was created in the 60s, it was designed without column-obstructing views. Angel Stadium was modeled after Dodger Stadium, so yes it was also modeled after Yankee Stadium.
@@WinkDaMan07 Nah, not worth the cost, because the rest of the stadium is falling apart and needs to be demolished anyway. If anything, Mt Davis is the only part of the stadium not in terrible shape because it's so much newer. But it's a useless eyesore, so just demolish the whole thing. It's time.

Never. The idea of playing there might've been bantered about in 1973 when the Meadowlands was already under construction and it appeared that Giants Stadium might be completed prior to Yankee Stadium. But it was never seriously considered. As it turned out, Yankee Stadium was renovated about 6 months before Giants Stadium was completed
They turned this beautiful stadium into a Shea Stadium look alike dump. Thankfully they tore it down, and built the greatest stadium that the New York Yankees ever played in.
I never thought much of the classic Yankee Stadium (too deep from alley to alley and too many outfield seats), but they turned it into an even uglier cookie cutter. The only way they could have made it worse is if they'd put in artificial turf. And unfortunately, the new Yankee Stadium looks pretty sterile too, you'd think that the Yankees would play in a place that had charm like what San Francisco, San Diego and Pittsburgh have.
@@diceman3146 Well, I've been tested three times and scored 153, 153 and 158 and while I never did get my PhD I do believe that those numbers are substantially above zero.
The original Yankee Stadium (1923-73) was America’s Roman Coliseum!
Wow I knew they renovated but I didn’t know they completely gutted the stadium. Can we still say that’s the house Ruth built?
No.it was radically changed.

Poppycock.
It became a dump!
this is great stuff! thanks for posting.
For what the city paid in cost overruns, they could have knocked the whole place down and built a beautiful new stadium that would have still been in use today. Such is life in the big city.
Yankee stadium renovation
Boooo! They should have never tore it down never. The new stadium now is not good at all I'd rather citifield.
Now is gone for ever :(
I was driving taxi when renovation began and I used to take a steady construction worker down every morning and drove my cab into the back that was opened for equipment right to the middle of the field I wish now I took some pictures but at the time it was no big deal!
The House That Reggie Made a Home.
Thanks from me to
Incredible video...thanks!
This happened before l was born in 1976 until l came to the house between 1982-1983 until around 2008!
Strange watching this just after I watched the recent videos of them taking it down.....so sad
YS was condemned by the city before the renovations.
Anyway, thanks a hell of a lot for sharing.
to my knowledge, no. this is indeed rare footage
@@stephenm8725 I gotta tell ya. If the YES Network decides to make a documentary of THE Yankee Stadium, this footage would be a perfect fit.
...A hole in my heart.
The music is very good. It is a shame that the old Yankee Stadium could not be preserved.
There was no realistic way it would have been done
@chud1able Do you remember the day you turned 7?
I miss the ORIGINAL Yankee stadium, not the post 1973 imitation. Haven't been to the brand new one, but can't imagine it compares favorably to the house that Ruth built.
Beautiful.
Should've did this again in 2008
I'm a Tom Landry-era Dallas Cowboys fan, since 1963.
IMO, the 1970s renovation should have never happened. They could have had some minor renovations, like Wrigley Field and Fenway Park.
I never was lucky enough to travel to NY to see "The House That Ruth Built"
There's nothing for me to see at the new stadium.
They should of built the new stadium on the footprint of the old and with a new look same field
It was bad enough taking down the original but then after the 76 version brought many titles and grew into Yankee history they totally tore it down. Never been to the new one and never will be
Well that's just plain stupid the new Yankee stadium is FANTASTIC
Once they remodeled in the 70s Yankee Stadium became a dump and the new one is beautiful and vastly Superior!
@@SuperPhilly5 its now just like any of the other new stadiums. The magic is gone, the ghosts are gone. Just like one of the other new stadiums. I've been to 24 MLB parks some new some old some in between. Its a nice stadium but the mystique is gone forever.
I wish it was there forever and I've been to the old Stadium only once in my life.
It was like painting over the Mona Lisa
its gone its alllllll gone :(
They could have remolded the old stadium to look like the new one very easy it might take 3 or 4 yrs to do but with todays technology could have been done meanwhile they play at CITI
looks like they just kept part of the original outside and built a new stadium behind it
I was at the last game of the ‘73 season a loss to the Tigers.
Did you rip out any seats like other fans did that day?
Nice shot of Gate 2 at :35. Hope they can actually save it after all
The original Stadium was an absolute wreck when Steinbrenner had it renovated and it was badly in need of the repairs.
The dumbest part was that the renovations cost $100 million. Meanwhile, Kansas City built TWO gorgeous stadiums for less than half that ($40 million).
Steinbrenner wanted this..he ruined one of the great wonders of the world. The old stadium should be here just like Fenway and Wrigley.
The deal to renovate the stadium was made before Steinbrenner owned the team.
@@davezanko9051 He is referring to the renovated version.
Hey, the Original Yankee Stadium held 75,000!
Went to third game in the revamped stadium I believe 1976, they played the twins and stadium was three days old and graffiti on it!!
I bet there was graffiti still on the #4 train back them
When the Yankees played in Shea Stadium in 1974-75, they played in Queens, not New Jersey. When did the Yankees ever play in the Meadowlands?
I think Angels stadium is probably a clone of 1970s YS if you look at it especially from the sky (drone) all I see is Yankee Stadium anyone else ?
@@davezanko9051 Now that the Raiders are gone, the A’s should do the same, tear down Mount Davis
It's time.
@@davezanko9051 When the Yankees visited Oakland this past season, they even exposed a possum problem in the visiting team’s broadcast booth!!! They had traps set up and everything!!!
Yet, the Bronx was burning.
Projected at 24 million, it cost almost 100 million.
$160 million.

I did it by accident.
Well your not a true yankees fan. You don't know a thing about the old stadium. Go back to Boston or flushing.
"I never thought much..."
You could've stopped right there.
