People who want to keep it for 10 or 15 years will love this stuff, but most $100K SUV buyers lease a new one every three years -- and for them, a lot of these compromises will be a disappointment.

I think I can actually explain a lot of features focused on rear passengers: Toyota and Lexus SUVs are popular vehicles for the very rich in Latin America. Rich people who purchase these tend to have bodyguards who do the actual driving, often two sitting in the front while the owners sit in the back. It is not uncommon for those who are even wealthier to have additional SUVs or pickup trucks driven by other bodyguards to accompany their main vehicle. Toyota/Lexus surely know this and I would not be surprised that this is also the case in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, where I understand these SUVs are also popular among rich people. Leasing cars is not a popular thing to do outside of the US and Canada as far as I know, so simple and reliable features are also appreciated in these regions (and if you think about it, you don’t really care if your bodyguard has all the nicest luxuries, ammenities or tech).

As always, good overall review, Doug. Having owned several “high-end” vehicles I’ll tell you this. Toyota/Lexus will never be first to market with anything groundbreaking. They take technology from the Germans that’s anywhere from 2-5 years old and unlike the Germans, they perfect it. So you’re right- the Nav/Entertainment/“Luxury” features are are not up to modern times with the Germans. But as someone who owns a 2022 Audi A8 with all the modern “features”….they’re a failure. Quirky, buggy, problematic. Nothing it’s cracked up to be. So, “latest” isn’t always “greatest.”

A space saving selector switch is not state of the art or gimmicky. It actually has function. It’s not like the gear selector is actually physically connected to the gearbox. It’s also an electronic switch which should be moved to the dash to make more space in the centre console. IMO the physical large selector switch is more gimmicky as the function it performs can be performed by 4 small P,R,N,D buttons.

I love the fact my IS has a beautiful leather/chrome gear shifter, instrument binnacle, lots of leather and real wood inserts. I can't stand these floating ipads that Mercedes use for their instrument cluster, without a binnacle and that column mounted stalk for gear selections.
edit: in conclusion: why doesn't this Lexus have all the gimmicks of RR or MB or BMW? because it's not a metrosexual town car. The LX is not directly competing with a Range Rover, it's kind of it's own thing. It's a Land Cruiser based vehcile that combined two worlds of utilitarian LandCruiser and luxury Lexus. It's unashamedly a quirky vehicle not following the pack..and the buyers LOVE IT.
