      @Coyote I say the same, specs and UI on the iPads are not similar to be a laptop replacement, sure, the specs are good, but it's not the same with current fast laptops. And about the UI, I like it, just not a big fan of it in terms of calling it the same as a computer...

    Apart from getting used to enter buttons location. I’m really enjoying this keyboard. This is the first Apple keyboard for the iPad that I’ve bought. The previous ones I didn’t because I felt the magnets were too weak/flimsy and the buttons too mushy. This still has shallow travel but it’s tactile enough that I can get used to it.
    I am not very particular when it comes to keyboards but I do have a range that I’m willing to be perfectly fine with.
    I’m very happy with it this iPad Pro.

    You may not like the back protection as said in your review but Apple knows that they have made the 2018 iPad pro more fragile so they redesigned the case to compensate for the bend gate

  • @left0verture

    I’ve been using a Logi Slim Folio on my 10.5 iPP and bought Apple’s Folio for my new 12.9. The Logi is a cheap (not inexpensive) plastic thing heavy, clunky and anything but slim. Moving to Apple’s Folio case, I can say I don’t miss the weight, bulkiest and clunkiness of the Logi. I *DO* however miss the backlit keys (even though it was annoying to not be able to adjust the amount of time the backlight stayed on). I also miss the function keys - no keyboard control for volume, brightness, home, etc with Apple’s keyboard. That having been said, I’m getting used to using only gestures too control everything, so that’s a wash. I definitely like the slim, lightweight case and I’m not going to gripe over it adding 3/10 of a pound to the whole rig.

    Some irrelevant nitpicking, like if I was watching a movie on my iPad, I wouldn't be bothered about the keyboard being below as it's out of the way. Not sure why anyone would be fiddling with cards or sliding a lighter about whilst watching a movie? But none the less a good and informative video.

    • @Drothen-

      Michael Thomas I will not upgrade to the new iPad just because the keyboard doesn’t fold conveniently enough. Just because you don’t care doesn’t mean it’s nitpicking.

    • @miket9724
      @miket9724 5 лет назад +4

      @@Drothen- I never once said that the keyboard didn't fold conveniently enough.. it's obvious that it's foldability is limited compared to its predocessor. This however is highlighted least when watching a movie, when you're unlikely to be entertaining yourself with a pack of cards or sliding a lighter about right Infront of the already limited screen. Maybe try reading the comment next time. Wonderful effort though, top notch!

    • @mayce1922
      @mayce1922 5 лет назад +6

      @@miket9724 Say if someone was watching a youtube tutorial regarding magic tricks or origami, you want that extra space. Also I do think that the deck of cards and lighter was just an example. As he stated, people study with textbooks or paper and again, you need that extra space. Also I don't really that that it's nitpicking if you're going to spend almost £200, some of the inconveniences can be really annoying for some people, maybe not for you but people are different. Hope that helps you understand better, ok?

    I bought the original iPad Pro 9.7 when it was introduced (I had to WAIT for the keyboard), and I have never, not once, used the "keyboard folded behind the back" position. I hated the bump on the front caused by the origami fold, and I hated how unstable the keyboard was on the lap without anything even sturdier under it. I also had to buy an extra silicone cover for the back.
    The new keyboard fixes all the annoyances I had with the previous one and ads more improvements. I'll never look back.

    All Gallaudet students were given during Covid this summer a 2nd edition 11 inch iPad Pro, and the keyboard folio. While I wish we were given the larger size, it would have cost a lot more for the university, so I get why. However, I found nothing to whine about in weight, flexibility, or taking up space. Our Deaf university uses ASL on Zoom for classes with students around the world, and the keyboard was not in my way to take notes. Deaf people are great at adapting. Maybe that is why Apple caters to us.

With responses to the nickpicking about the keyboard, in my experience when flying with the tray table down (while riding in an airplane), the old keyboard allowed to be tucked in behind for room for other things like a drink. Had the 12.9 the last time and went for the 11 this time, couldn’t be happier. Even tho the 12.9 is a lot smaller, the 11 inch screen is plenty big for me. The weight of the 12.9 is still to much for laying in bed or on the couch if holding it in your hands. Even with the Smart Keyboard on my 11 its so much lighter than my old 12.9 with keyboard. Love the keyboard folio, only complaint is feeling the keys when flipped back, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

    I bought the folio for 1 thing, to protect it while i carry it. I don't type emails while i'm on the couch, I don't storm out of the house and need the extra millisecond to remove or add the cover, I don't need to peek and check the time. The giant keyboard is not so giant, and if you need extra space in your desk, you probably need a bigger desk lol.

    Went into an Apple store while i was out and tested the Smart Keyboard folio as I was thinking of getting one for my iPad Pro 12.9 (2018). I however did not like the typing experience after i tried Samsung’s keyboard for their new tablet devices (I don’t have one but eh). Now, the irony comes... I’m currently typing this comment using the Smart Keyboard folio that I mentioned earlier and stated I did not like the typing experience. Tbh, I have changed my opinion and actually love the Smart Keyboard folio. I just wished both angles had a steeper option, so there will be 4 angles in total. Also, I appreciated the last iteration of the Smart Keyboard where the keyboard can be “hidden” behind the ipad, while also maintaining an angle. This is is pretty comfortable to use on my lap, for most of the time. It has a minimalistic design, which I am for it, but it sacrifices on protecting your iPad; so if you’re a very clumsy individual who is prone to dropping a very expensive iPad, I would not recommend this, or get the DUX Shell along side it (not a fan of that). I have small hands so the size of the keyboard is pretty ok for me, but those with big hands may be uncomfortable using it. I just wish the keyboard offered more features, such as changing the volume of the iPad without having to use the screen, as well as changing the brightness of the screen. And maybe back light as it is pretty hard to see the keys in a dark room, but you can always have the lights on (I had a powercut so) and I found out that using the steeper angle with the brightness of the screen almost at max, it is pretty ok to see the keys. Or you could just use muscle memory to type, which I am not very good at yet. One more nitpick, when typing very fast, as I had been now, the caps key doesn’t always function properly as it doesn’t register, so sometimes when you press it to capitalise a letter, it will not. Also, another nitpick is there is no indication to let you know if the caps key is indeed on/off. Maybe Apple could have added a small LED light on the caps key or make a small indication on the screen itself.

  • @lmorris1953
    @lmorris1953 4 года назад

    I have two observations regarding my 11 Pro inch keyboard experience after about 6 months.
    1. In typing mode The position closest to the keyboard presents an issue for me because when I am reaching to type on the number row my tips of my fingers will sometimes touch the screen of the iPad which is a little annoying.
    2. As you stated in tablet mode the keys on the keyboard are flat against any surface you lay the device on. However, a semi-work around is I position the iPad as if I’m about to put it in typing mode but rather than placing the iPad in the grooves I lift the tablet forward and place it flat on the keyboard which hides all the keys above the home row.Perhaps Apple will consider designing their next cases to hide the keyboard keys completely. But, until then for me this will have to do.

    With the old Smart Keyboard, after around 2+ years of usage, the edges seem a bit worn out and a lot of fibres have come out looking like threads, showing its age. (I have the 9.7 inch version). It still works amazingly but it isn’t something one would expect from an Apple product.

No-one seems to give me a clear idea as to how that works with this keyboard (Italian language characters, accent marks, Russian characters, etc.) Mac help seemed to be saying there is a way of using the keyboard itself, but the implication was simply that you could go out of keyboard mode and peck on the screen keyboards.

    Both are an annoyance. Waiting to see what Logitech can do. Use the Logitech Slim Folio with keyboard so I can go keyboard or no keyboard and the back allows any orientation. I can even stand it up in Portrait mode. Hope they make one for the new iPad Pro. Wish they hadn’t moved the smart connector

  • @Stan_sprinkle
    @Stan_sprinkle 5 лет назад

    yeah it's give and take with having the back covered. They move the connector to the back which means now you can lay it down flat on the table and draw but you could also still type on the keyboard. On the old one, you can't lay it flat on the table and still be connected to the keyboard... Which brings me to my next point: I'd still prefer having some other Bluetooth keyboard case even if it means I have to charge it once a month. Logitech are probably the best but you're giving up some of the minimalist design with the Apple keyboard. It's frustrating

    Honestly take a look at BRYDGE, I am currently using the IPad Pro 12.9 2017 with the Seres II keyboard from BRYDGE and I am happy I didn’t go with Apples cheap feeling cloth keyboard!
    The Brydge keyboard has 180 degrees of possible hinge adjustments. While the keyboard is Bluetooth, the series II gets rid of any lag or repeated/missing key strokes...The keyboard also has a full function row that makes using the IPad Pro a possible laptop replacement (while apple choose to only have a number row...) The keyboard also has the open to wake feature, and there is no problem with taking the ipad out of the keyboard hinges...just apply pressure downwards on the keyboard and pull the ipad out.There are also rubber feet on the bottom, so it never slides around. Also due to its colour matched metal design, using the iPad Pro on the lap is easy as can be. The keyboard also promises a full year before you charge it. I revived mine in late August 2018 @86% and as of November 13th, 2018 the keyboard is currently at 78%. I have written plenty of +10 page essays and have not experienced any issue when it comes to typing..the keys feel amazing and offer more key travel when compared to the last couple MBPs.

    One thing I like about the old one is the Smart Cover style angle it gives you, and you can even use the on screen keyboard when in that mode. I don't think you can do that with the new one.

      @@erenyeager3296 if you try to cover the edges you have to cover the under and upper part, which is where the speakers are installed. For the keyboard version it's impossible to do so as it will interfere with the keyboard stand. As for the folio cover all Apple official iPad cover never surround the edges, its always been like this way. I have scratched the paint of my ipad air 2 years ago because i bought the apple cover, and thus never used its cover ever again, and bought whole surrounding case instead. I admit it's possible to bump into the edges when falling, but its way more easier to break the screen and the screen cost like 50% of the ipad price to repair, which IMO you should just buy the apple care + (at least I did). The above comments also claimed a shattered screen on fall.

    I have an iPad Pro 10.5 with an Apple Smart Keyboard, and everything inside me is telling me to wait to upgrade. Your video helps some with that, but I also just watched a durability test for the new 11, and it was not good. :(. I also want to wait for the software to catch up with the hardware.

    • @joeoreo2498
      @joeoreo2498 5 лет назад +1

      The Tech Wiccan if your waiting for the software to catch up, you will be waiting a long time. Apple will never make the iPad as useful as a laptop.

    • @Vicki_Benji

      Aaron Gutierrez I understand that too. The new iPad is a little too powerful, IMO. Right now, it is powerful enough to run Final Cut Pro, but we don’t have it. This is just one example. Maybe that will change in the future.

    I’m a huge user of the Smart Keyboard and I agree 100% with your comparison between the new one and the old one. I hope Apple listens to some of these criticisms and tries to improve on the next model, but I think it’s pretty obvious they made some compromises with features to try to make the new one better (more rigid, because the front doesn’t fold, but that means no media mode and keys on your hand holding the iPad with the front folded back).
    And back protection is worthless. I think Apple saw people bitching about that on forums and gave people what they wanted, but it doesn’t make sense when the back is made from aluminum that’s more than strong enough to survive getting bumped around in a bag all day.

    Question:
    - Does the old microfiber smart keyboard also work on the 2020 ipad pro?
    - If yes: where can I get it? Cause I just can't seem to find that microfiber one anywhere online anymore. (except at extremely high prices)
    I just want a stand for the ipad 2020 pro so that it can sit upright WITHOUT the keyboard in front of it :/
    I think I just really want the old smart keyboard you show us here, but on the new ipad 2020. Any advice or alternatives?
