I was hyped and purchased the 12.9 inch iPad, type cover and pencil back in November 2018 for uni. I now pretty much always pick up my 14 inch laptop over it, as I feel its far more functional and similar in size. I'd suggest going for the 11inch model as it will likely be more convenient to use and might complement a laptop, rather than poorly attempt to duplicate it.
The new IPad Pro screen has lost some rigidity when compared to the more solid 2nd gen versions, the screens now flex slightly when using apple pencil. If buying for note-taking only, go with the 6th gen standard iPad as the screens now feel very similar to write on. The 120Hz on the pro is nice but not game changing IMO.
Just my 2 cents but there will likely be many people watching this video considering a purchase. For the record, I have reverted back to paper for note taking.....expensive experiment. Hope this helps.

Andrew Lambie one thing I’m not sure I agree on is the pencil, on iPad Pro 2018 vs the 2018 iPad it’s noticeably different.
To be fair to the pencil on the basic iPad, it’s a close writing experience to what I get my on Microsoft Surface devices, similar latency.
The pencil 2 on iPad Pro is in a class of its own though for low latency, the only device I’ve actually used for writing (apart from a real pen and paper) that feels close to really writing on the surface

Don’t get it off retail! If you live in the US I’d highly suggest trying to find it through offerup, or Mercari. I purchase most of my stuff on those two selling platforms as it’s always much more cheaper! I always able to get the Apple keyboard brand new sealed in the box for $90! That’s half the price of the retail price.

    • @DanielHarrisCodes
      @DanielHarrisCodes 5 лет назад +8

Sergio Flores Sanabria I bought one because I decided to return the Logitec Slim Folio due to it not being.....slim at all. Resent the price a little bit when surface Pro keyboards are about £50-£60 cheaper and offer a better experience but I don’t think there’s any slimmer option other than standard folio (which I also have) with a separate Bluetooth keyboard.

Dale Cooper I wasn’t sure at first but do actually quite like typing on it now - If you are investing in an iPad Pro may as well get the best keyboard to go with it. I still prefer the Surface Pro keyboard but this is really nice and I’m glad I purchased it

Agreed, I use my keyboard with the 12.9 pro and its so much more portable than my 15 inch mbp, it comes with me to every lecture and naturally is the first thing I reach for when it comes to writing.
If Microsoft word was better on the iPad I would use it to write assignments but for more report based things I end up using the laptop

You didn't mention one drawback with the Smart Keyboard Folio is that it isn't backlit. I find that especially frustrating with the CAPS LOCK key which I accidentally hit and then have trouble knowing when I un CAPS LOCK. I understand Apple doesn't want unnecessary power to the keyboard, but there should be some way to indicate when it is on, or remove the key entirely.

As a college student utilizing a 2015 Macbook Pro plus an 2018 iPad Pro who has gotten some time with the iPad Pro Smart Keyboard Folio, I beg to differ. Here's why:
    Pros:
    Convenient
    Protective
    Great almost bubble popping experience
    Cons:
    Expensive
    Not a full sized keyboard
Might be too mush of an experience
Not cohesive with using the Apple Pencil (which is a very big selling point for the iPad Pro)
My personal recommendation is to get a Magic Keyboard 2 with just the regular Smart Folio Case. Why? Two angle settings with the case (resting and standing), and if you need to use the keyboard you can pull it out and use it with pretty much instant pairing.
These items get very cheap on eBay, keyboard is around $40 used, and the case can be found for as low as $50.

    • @martinsurovy427

Wow, similar idea as I did. In my Ipad Pro 2016 12.9 I had the "keyboard cover" which is very simmilar to this. I didnt like the typing experience at all. So with new Ipad Pro 2018 I've went for the same route as you're proposing - Ipad + Folio case + magic keyboard. The typing exp. is so much better. I can change my positions during typing. And as you've mentioned the Ipad has then one more position available with standard smart folio.
Only thing I regret I didnt buy the full size magic keybord with numpad. Bud unfortunately it wouldnt fit into my backpack.

Also a college student, same setup (MBP and iPad Pro), plus an additional iPad Pro. I can see why you'd use the separate keyboard. I personally prefer the folios (started out with the setup you use and hated it.) Do you find yourself typing and writing at the same time while taking notes in class, for example? Tons of people ask me advice on setting up with a Pro, and I've never thought about those who go back and forth in one session.

    • @alstonmiller212

I actually love the keyboard, I can type faster on it than I do on a normal computer

    • @kakakarim
      @kakakarim 5 лет назад

@@kmack1574 I honestly find myself conflicted with typing out notes. I find 'handwritten' notes to be a more useful setup for me personally, primarily because writing down info is better than typing it out, I get to illustrate through a little figure or graph, whichever it be. I don't even use my keyboard much, and I can see why you can dislike the setup I have. The iPad virtual keyboard is horrible, and honestly nothing beats writing on an angled iPad so far, which the keyboard folio wouldn't be able to do for me. I'll leave my big typing experiences to my MBP.

  • @techinnuendo

I also find it to be a joy to write on. It is in my opinion the best keyboard Apple has made, the added texture compared to the Magic Keyboard or the v2 of butterfly switches from the Macbooks makes the experience really great. I actually hope they make something similar for Mac Mini, though more travel would be awesome.
Compared to a true mechanical keyboard with some blue MX switches, it's still child's play, but it is surprisingly great. Even so, I don't think it's worth the money, it's just that there aren't many options for the new iPads, at least not yet. Maybe Logitech will release something soon.
Overall I am happy with this keyboard folio, though I have to say I got it at 50% off, so it was a no brainer for me.

Oh hai... I didn't like the smart keyboard to be honest.. I agree that the typing experience was great, but I returned it because it took up so much surface area on a table, the inconvenience of laying it flat to write on, and its bulkiness/weight.. I now have the smart folio and love it. Sometimes I would bring with me the Logitech Keys-to-go ultra portable keyboard to type on, which is an okay experience, but has more functions than the smart keyboard lol

I also really do believe that the Smart Keyboard Folio is such an amazing typing experience overall, although it may be pricey I still truly believe that you are getting an almost Magic Keyboard for 1/2 of the price of an actual Magic Keyboard which is why I really think this is an incredible case overall. I just wish that Apple would add a trackpad to this case because that would make this case an even more incredible deal, but once again, this case is truly incredible and you may want to buy one of these cases for yourself. I just bought the 11 inch iPad pro, and I also have a 2018 Macbook Pro 13. I decided on the smaller iPad since the larger one is almost the size of my laptop. At the office, I connect the Macbook to an external monitor and I use a Magic keyboard and trackpad with it. I have started to use the Magic keyboard with my iPad and it works well. I mean it is not as streamlined as this smart keyboard, but it still works great. I also have a case for the keyboard and trackpad so it's easy to carry it around in my bag. The typing experience is amazing on the second generation keyboard. So that might be worth considering for some as well :)

As much as it would have been nice to have the folio, it was so much cheaper to get the bluetooth one and it works perfectly for my needs and because it folds too, it takes up very little space in my bag. Just an alternative option if you're looking :)

Okay, since you said that it's the best typing experience on ANY device EVER, i got to ask you since I'm really curious. How does this compares to a mechanical keyboard? Does this folio still nicer?

I agree its really good. Maybe not the best ever but really good. I really don’t see where all the hate is coming from 🤷🏼‍♂️

Lukas Fiedler reviewed standalone by itself I think it’s a really good accessory, the price seems expensive compared to a Surface Pro keyboard (superior materials and experience imo). Part of the price comes from needing to supply a large magnetic surface, and a way to stand up the device since the iPad doesn’t have a kickstand, I do wonder how long until they add one though

Hey ! I have a question about the keyboard, okay it is comfortable and satisfiying to use, but is it good enough to type several hours ? It seems so tiny (especially the 11" version), I'm scared to buy it and finally not to be able to make several hours of note taking because of finger pain... Thanks for your answer and sorry for my english level there might be some mistakes haha ^^'

Tartiflette it’s small. I haven’t used it long enough to comment weather it’s a deal breaker.

I have seen a few videos of yours. You tend to give a genuine opinion about things. I am struggling with deciding to which case to buy for iPad Pro 12.9". I am a student and I would mostly be using it for writing down notes using apple pencil. This is my first apple product that I am buying. Products are very expensive, so I want to go right about it. I was going to buy Apple Smart Keyboard Folio but that doesn't sit at 15 degree angle which I think would be better for writing notes. Please reply.

I’m wondering whether the keys scratch the iPad screen with this case. I’d love to hear about people’s experiences!

For someone that is on a tight budget which could only get either one between the apple pencil and the smart keyboard, which one should I pick ?
My study requires me to do a lot of presentation and note taking. And i do travel a lot. That’s the reason why i need that portability of an iPad. Any idea ? I’ll get both for sure, but I need to buy it one at a time. Which should i get first ? Thanks !

What's the point of using a case if you're gonna remove it to use the Pencil? It makes it vulnerable to dropping, so what's the point? Also the sides(which are the most sensible areas) stay unprotected, drops on the side specially the edges are the most deadliest. Just see any drop test on youtube, when they drop the edges is when the shit hits the fan. I think the benefit of mobility and ease of use might not outweight the vulnerability for the ipad, at least for me. Good video :)

This is quite a controversial view. Many Tech reviews really hate the typing experience of the case.

Reviews are subjective. Ali likes how it feels and some won't like it. I advise testing it out in a store or using your friend's.

Tom Drew so you’re saying there’s debate about it? Sure. “Many” is an arbitrary word though. Have you personally counted every review and worked out a percentage? That’s the problem with RUclips- the damn things an echo chamber. People need to go into an Apple store, test it for themselves. You like it, buy it. If you don’t, don’t buy it

Martyn Gasson 😂 chill out. I really like Ali’s videos I was merely stating that his view can be seen to be in the minority of tech reviewers. It doesn’t take anything away from the video, it was a simple observation.

    • @TheVergile
      @TheVergile 5 лет назад +1

well he compares it to the macbook and apple magic, which arent great either. Most tech reviews know the keyboard market better than him and expect more from a 200 euro keyboard, even if it is a slim form factor

You could also just buy an inexpensive bluetooth keyboard (e.g. logitech) for 40€ if you don't write all the time ans can handle a bit less convenience

Typing is much easier on the butterfly keyboard. It does take some getting used to but it is good anyways.
