Pokemon Sword and Shield are somewhere between bad Pokemon games and good Pokemon games

This may sound ludicrous, but if you're looking for cheap and temporary access to a pokémon game so you can create a save file, your local library probably has it. Mine has multiple copies of gens seven and eight on hand for lending.

One thing that still blows my mind is that the gameboy advance only has one generation of Pokémon made for the system (not including the generation 1 remakes). I never really realized this until recently lol. Every other Nintendo system has multiple generations of Pokémon. I guess the gap between the gameboy advance and the Nintendo DS was shorter than I remembered.

imma be honest, when i do no capture runs, i allow myself to catch certain pokemon (required legends, the train station Slowpoke, shinies, etc.) and still consider the run to be valid as long as they dont get used in battle
I was gonna say that! Like… as long as you don’t use the Pokémon you catch, go ahead and catch required Pokémon.
I did a no catch run in Shield last year and yeah, pretty frustrating that the DLC with most of the best gift Pokémon is walled off especially when you have to catch eternatus anyway but there is a bit of a loophole. If you camp on numbered routes and make high graded curry there’s a chance that wild Pokémon will come join you without having to catch them. It’s a bit like using pokepelego for Pokémon that way.

@@salsichareverso Obviously you could, but the rule set is no catching Pokémon. It’s a difficulty choice. Only gift Pokémon in battle is a different rule set.

I love this challenge. I even love his use of "two shakes of a lambs tail" "lay waste" "lay down the law" little phrases from FRLG how Nintendo intended. Although before I started this I thought Mikey might make a cameo.. But I also did a no catch challenge on Fire Red. It was fun and it had its fair share of challenges. Keep up the great content man. Can't wait til the next one.
I hope that Scarlet and Violet get official strategy guides from the moment of release so your first playthrough can be as Nintended. And maybe way more inepth and multipart.

I once did a run like this and I highly recommend it. Although I allowed myself to go to the isle of armor. My final team was Rillaboom, Toxtricity, alolan ninetales, persian, raichu, and marowak.
I did the same but had cinderace, venusaur, kantonian slowpoke, alolan ninetales, alolan raichu and urshifu

Did a bit of testing and if you wanna get rid of those pesky ultra-rare Pokéballs, you can release Pokémon while they hold them

Fun fact: in BDSP, if you have sword/shield save data, an old guy in floroma will give you a *JIRACHI*

Honestly I would have forgiven having to catch the slowpoke due to it being mandatory, just don't use it.
Sword and shield are such underated games for these challenges man.

So what I wanna do is a sort of a variation of the no catching run, where you can only get Pokémon, that have limited availability in your game, regardless of whether they are caught or gifted to you. So in Kanto e.g. you could catch one or two Snorlaxes and would end up with a Team similar to that of Red when you fight him in Gen 2. Or here in Galar you could catch the Isle of Armor Slowpoke as well as Eternatus, but on the other hand couldn't get infinite fossil pokémon. I'm not sure if this sort of challenge has a name yet though.

I tried to do this without gift or camp. It’s actually possible. Somehow. Used rillaboom, got hidden ability from crown tundra, and then taught grassy glide to rillaboom, and kind of swept the game.

you totally could have gotten more free Pokémon in the Isle of Armor if you simply had to KO the Slowpoke, instead of being forced to catch it to get it out of the way.
I actually did this run a while back and I intentionally didn't pick up Cinderace bcoz it's just so strong in this game. Let me tell you, Chairmain Rose was quite tough since I had zero fire moves 😅

I wonder what would happen if you tried going into the Eternatus battle without any Poké Balls. Sell everything you picked up or were given, and if you got any Apricorn Balls from Ball Guy you can have your Pokémon hold them so they're not in your bag. Would the game still force you to go through with the capture?
It gives you a Pokèball if I remember correctly so you have to catch it

you could have enforced a proxy rule that allows Eternatus’ capture as its forced to progress (Fallout Players do something similar when it comes to killing the Fallout 3 radroach)

You could have gotten some fossils in the route where you can revive them giving you different types of fossils

I just came back to SW/SH in an effort to do an entire living dex through PKHEX and proper gen games for the regions, and I had to install the Sacred Sword difficulty mod and the randomized wild mons mod. Its unfortunate that those mods made an infinitely better game, one that is the first pokemon game I didnt bother finishing the first time around.
So the starter the dojo the save data from let’s go and the diglitt are how you get Pokémon right?
I totally bought Let's Go Pikachu just to get the free Pikachu in this game, since previously I'd just bought Let's Go Eevee since that was preferred one of the pair (since Eevee is my favorite Pokémon). So I can see why you would've done that with Eevee. They do have a demo of Let's Go on the eShop - I don't know if that works for that requirement or not though.
I didn't know you were actually forced to catch the Galarian Slowpoke to gain access to the Isle of Armor. I just caught it cause it was a new Pokémon, like I usually do.
Also wasn't aware of the Togepi trade. Alcremie is great, but I'm sure Togekiss would've been a better Fairy type to use in the later game (like against Raihan for example, or against Leon's Dragon types, though his Dragapult had Shadow Ball to cover his Fairy weakness when I fought him). May have to keep that in mind. It might be too late in Sword (as once you're in the final tournament I don't think you can leave the Stadium except for story things like stopping Rose), but it would be helpful for Shield, although in that game I also have access to Galarian Rapidash. Plus I never use my gift Toxel anyway (except for Poké Jobs)
I caught a Nickit early on and basically just used that (and its evolution Thievul) to fight Bede. Until the tournament, he uses an all-Psychic team, which meant that my pure dark-type Nickit/Thievul could basically OHKO his whole team with moves like Assurance, while taking no damage to him thanks to my immunity to Psychic. Since I found Bede to be a colossal jerk, I found this advantage very satisfying.
Yk I'll be honest, I would've caught the slowpoke, released it, then gone to the Isle of Armor and continued the challenge anyways.
If only you played Shield, the superior version which has Mo- Melony.
Next challenge: Losing Pokemon Sword
I guess this game is actually a little hard when your Pokémon arnt constantly at least 8 levels above your opponent

I'd personally just treat Eternatus as an event Pokemon and not a true "caught" Pokemon. But, yeah, already knew you would fail this task if you treat Eternatus as a normal capture.

Imma say it now, you only lost because you didn’t “hammer away” at all your enemies
fun fact about Eternatus; there is no way to *not* catch it. They even hide a bunch of boxes until you catch Eternatus. Supposedly, if you were to edit your save to fill the boxes you start with and the hidden boxes, the game crashes when you attempt to catch Eternatus
They've been doing that since gen 6. Also, it's only one Box that can't be used until you catch Eternatus.
But not only that, if you didn't have any Poké Balls when you went to catch it, you'd automatically be given one.
@@TheRedSmarty I thought the progress-based box hiding was new to SwSh? So they've been doing that since XY? Learn something new everyday.
@@Vexal50 IDK about XY actually. But I've read that it existed in ORAS for Latias/Latios. (Though it could be accessed in Bank but that would stop you from progressing until you made space.)

@@Vexal50 Actually, disregard what I said about ORAS. I just realized it is a normal Box. You just get told to free up space if you fill them all up before going to where you get Latias/Latios.
Maybe it is only for Sword and Shield and Legends: Arceus? I just feel like it happens in more games than those... IDK.
