I love how you are payig homage t the Prima guide by saysing "hammer away". Nice Reference! Also his is such a good video series and I love it so much.
I ended up using this guide to do my own playthrough after you posted the first one with the Prima guide. Ended up using Clefairy, and once you teach it Mega Punch and use a Moon Stone on it, it's quite strong. It's essentially a Raticate with Sing, and Raticate itself is a good Pokemon to use early game. Also, I pretty much only used the back of this guide as a kid, since I had already played through RBY. I did a bunch of breeding chains to get things like Ancient Power of Exeggcute.
On the topic of the the Magikarp salesman, it's really not a bad deal if you're doing the Pokedex! Catching a wild one takes a minimum of 200 Pokedollars, which is super cheap in the Pokemon world, so it's basically just paying for the Poke Ball + a 300 Pokedollar convenience fee. If the Magikarp breaks out even once, which is decently likely if you have to catch it at full health because your entire party will OHKO it, then you come out ahead after only two breakouts. Plus, if you stop replenishing Poke Balls once you run out because they kinda suck, a Great Ball is 600, meaning that if you're forced to use a Great Ball on the Magikarp, you would have saved 100 from the salesman. Of course, if you're *not* doing the Pokedex, probably better to just catch a wild Gyarados directly because raising Magikarp is painful.
I would always buy the Magikarp and then do the lead off, switch to someone else method to level up lol. Not just because Gyarados was always one of my favorites, but having that guy so early in the game by the 2nd badge was soooo useful as a Charmander-cel.
I always bought the Magikarp and put it in the daycare center as soon as I could. Once it got to level 19 I would take it out and use a rare candy on it to evolve it. This makes getting a Gyarados early in the game really easy, and I don't know why I've never heard of anyone else doing it this way
"Shop Smart, shop Pokémart" may be a play on words of "Shop smart, Shop S-Mart" from the Evil Dead Trilogy; where the main character's day job is as a sales associate at S-Mart.

In kanto, after getting cut, I prioritize the minimum requirements to defeat koga and get hm surf or its equivalent outside of battle.
