4:58. I always thought it was weird the way the rival is named in this game. As I kid I did the same exact thing I just named him ??? and it's actually become my standard name for him in any gen 2 play through I do lol
I unironically used to call the rival ??? As a kid because I just thought that was his name. Took me actually years to realise it was just a way to name him whatever you wanted
The gen 2 games live in my heart rent-free, so I'm always down for more coverage. I remember seeing this guide in stores, but it's one of the few I never picked up. I think I still felt burned from the GS guide splitting into two for main quest and Pokedex. I would definitely love to see part two of this one, though!
Crystal was my first Pokémon game and I played the absolute hell out of it! First time beating the league my team consisted of Typhlosion, Skarmory, red Gyrados, Magneton, Graveler (because I diddnt have a link cable or a friend to trade with) and Togetic. Eventually Suicune replaced the gyrados and Graveler was replaced by Lugia. I also randomly found Rioku and caught it to replace Togetic before I beat Red. I had so many memories of that game!
I've been playing through Crystal Clear. The story is still intact and unmodified in the game, it's everything else that got upgraded. I recommend checking it out sometime.
Given the "choose-your-order" approach of the Chuck-Jasmine-Pryce gym leaders, I'm curious to see what is the Nintended way. As per usual, I'm looking forward to seeing the team you build during this guided adventure. 2:23 - The bizarreness of Spinarak's move-set on display here as well as the misfortune of the hard-to-find Yanma learning Wing Attack as it's strongest STAB attack (really should have been a Dragon-Bug anyway). 3:54 - A handy one-stop segment for Pokémon locations would have been so helpful back in the day. Heck, it's even helpful nowadays. Kid me would not wasted my time trying to find a Slugma and Sneasel or would have known where exactly I could find a Dunsparce. 6:49 - Not a fan of the "roast" against my favourite type, but to be fair, Bugsy is using a Lv14 Metapod and a Kakuna. He kind of deserves the roast. 9:30 - Johto's bug catching contest... featuring exclusively Kanto Pokémon. Typical of Gen 2 really. Cool to see you participate. 11:48 - To be fair, the Pokémon themselves are also a bit clueless. Magnemite only discovered around this time that it was immune to Poison and for a while, Pokémon thought you Crunched down on Pokémon with special energy rather than physically biting them. The introduction of a lot of new mechanics don't make a lot of sense how folks didn't know about them beforehand. 16:44 - They really like showing off the Mareep line in this Crystal version guide, don' they?
I don't know why, but I really really love these videos. And have gotten so invested and always watch the videos as soon as I see a new one released. Thanks for the amazing content! :D
After playing this game I don't know how many times, I decided to spruce my playthrough by creating custom parties that all share my characters ID, which includes all 3 starter Pokemon, an Umbreon, a Pikachu and a Larvitar, to name one specific team. I also decided to collect all 251 and have them save on Pokemon Stadium Two and I have my own instruction manual when beginning new games.

i had this exact guide book back in the day! thanks for the nostalgia trip, papasea. i think this inspired me to play crystal again before scarlet and violet next week!
I definitely accidentally called my rival ??? during my first Gold playthrough when I was 10. Felt very dumb when my friend told me the funny name she called hers so restarted my whole game
I think the reason why pokemon breeding was 'just being discovered' in gen 2, was because gen 1 and 2 were partly written with the idea they take place in a slightly alternate version of the real world wherein pokemon had been absent until somewhat recently; hence all the real world references throughout gen 1, or that early gen 1 guide/pokedex that only recently got translated thanks to DYKG. Heck, the region of Kanto is based directly on the japanese region of Kanto, and the beta version of Gen 2 was based on all of japan, with many of the early town/city names being taken directly from real areas of japan
I remember every time you enter a route with a new pokemon, they would have a quick summary of that pokemon. Besides Geodude, who they recommend releasing your Gen 1 Geodude/Graveler/Golem for this one because it gets Magnitude at lvl 16, I remember basically all other pokemon, almost all of them, being said to not be that good. Being new it made me think "so what 6 pokemon do I put on my team if only 2 of them are good?"
@@josuesorto3453 I find if you catch a wild shiny (not including the red garados) that you tend to see them quite often thereafter. If you don't you could go the whole game without seeing one. It's weird how it works on like that. I got a shiny clefa from the daycare egg once and that save file I seen many shiny.
Nidorina and Nidoqueen have been canonically sterile since Gen 1, before breeding was even introduced as a game mechanic. I don’t think there’s ever been an explanation as to why. Their Pokedex entries even contradict this, describing them feeding and protecting their young. Nidoran F is the only one of its line that can breed, yet all stages of the Nidoran M line can breed. It’s baffling.
I think it's supposed to be a reference to IRL Rhinos being notoriously hard, if not impossible to breed in captivity, and the issue usually affects female Rhinos the most.
@@caelum8160 recent (ish) studies suggest female rhinoceros find it easier to get pregnant when surrounded by other female rhinoceros- i guess like how a safe community to raise a kid in would make a more attractive place to get pregnant as a human. it’s probably too late for rhinoceros, but still an interesting take on breeding endangered species in captivity

@@andyghkfilm2287 Wouldn't be the first time the Pokémon games are weird with their explanations of things. Just look at the status condition confused. Almost all moves that causes it makes the Pokémon Dizzy, so why didn't they call it that instead?
I'd love to see a Part 2, gen 2 is by far my favorite and Crystal's art style is still great today. I might have asked in another video, but would you ever be interested in running Crystal Clear? It's an open-world hack with a ton of new features, without changing too much of gen 2's core mechanics.
(3:07) Yeah, I always hated how the Mareep line became unobtainable in Crystal without trading with Gold or Silver. Why did they do that?! (14:29) Wait, Fire is neutral vs. Dewgong because it's part Water-type, and it would be able to hit your Fire-type for super effective damage back. So, that's a mistake the guide made there. Maybe it meant to suggest a Fighting-type? (17:15) Nice Pokérus there. Interestingly, the most recent time I played through Silver (doing a challenge playthrough where I could only press A during battle), I got the Pokérus myself pretty early on. I bought an extra Abra at the Goldenrod Game Corner, spread the Pokérus to it, and then stored it in the PC to make sure I'd always be able to spread it to any other Pokémon I acquired later on.
I know this video is fairly old now, but a guide brand I want to suggest for this game was published by Versus Books. I've owned this guide for years now, and find it's one of the most informative guides I own for any game.
0:07 I still have that original guide book mine as been through hell, had mine since the 5th grade I was 10 it was 2000 I stole it new from some rich kid, 22 years later and I still use for my virtual console version including my original Yellow version guide I got from Value Village long before cell phones were a thing
My parents gave me Pokemon Crystal and a gameboy advance in the middle of the night weeks before my birthday when I couldnt sleep because of the itch of my cast as my leg was broken when I was 5 years old. I was instantly comforted and played for an hour until i fell asleep. I will never forget this moment and this game!
Pryce has the biggest type blunder out of the whole thing, IMO. Fire types are neutral v Dewgong, while it limely has Water attacks...which hurt fire types. Despite the weakness to Ice, Grass would've been the better type to recommend, as it's super effective against the whole team. Though Fighting would be better against 2 of them (can't remember 100% if Seel is pure Water or if it has Ice as well). Oh well
9:12 This could be referring to certain Pokémon and their hidden happiness stat. Say you purchase the cheap stuff for them and the happiness stat is worsened. Maybe potions and antidotes are neutral. I always had a feeling that the natural berries increased that stat to achieve evolution faster.
For anyone reading these comments, unrelated to the video but since he mentioned the stones would just like to say there is a very easy way to get access to the elemental stones. Delete all the numbers in your phone except for the trainer you want the stone from. Go back to your house tell your mom to change daylight savings time. Do this back and forth it will trigger calls from the trainer. Do this a few times/beat the trainer a few times and you'll have your stone! Takes about 5-10 mins depending on rng and yoill have to go back to new bark after each victory to trigger another call. Really uesful for team building in a more timely manner
Anyone else as a kid not bother training up their other pokemon, blasting through everything with their cyndaquil/quilava/typhlosion until you are near lv 100 with that starter, and crush the elite 4 using only 1 pokemon?
I convinced myself that if I didn't name him ??? then the cops would never catch him and I'd lose the game lol it took me FOREVER to realize how dumb I was haha
I usually end up with typhlosion that learns thunderpunch, gyarados with bite or crunch, dragonite with wing attack, kadabra for most of the elite four, pidgeot for fly and wing attack and one more for Lance. I think rockslide and rock throw can wreck most of Lance's team. It's been awhile but I change teams depending on starter
I don't know why, but in the German version of cristal, the tradeable Onix is called "AARON". Since the "Substitute Teacher" sketch by Keegan-Michael Key, it's even funnier. Every time I catch an Onix these days I call it "A-A-RON".
Even though Pidgey's gust is now a flying type instead of a normal type move, it doesn't receive it until 9 unlike Spearow which has access to peck from the start. Also, you can pick up a Geodude on the same route where Spearow is.
The X Defend from Sprout Tower in Gold and Silver becoming an X Accuracy in Crystal is actually massive for Falkner because it completely nullifies the accuracy drops from Mud-Slap

I named him "Rival"
I also name him ???
They did it better in the remake
Honestly, same lol. I really thought I was helping the officer by identifying the perpetrator with the ??? name given to me lol
I usually went with 'Gaylord'
The gen 2 games live in my heart rent-free, so I'm always down for more coverage. I remember seeing this guide in stores, but it's one of the few I never picked up. I think I still felt burned from the GS guide splitting into two for main quest and Pokedex.
I would definitely love to see part two of this one, though!
The Prima guide is far superior. This guide is heresy!!!
3:15 Because this guide is actually for all three gen 2 games, not _just_ Crystal (despite the cover).
Crystal was my first
Pokémon game and I played the absolute hell out of it!
The classic art always makes me happy when I see it.
I've been playing through Crystal Clear. The story is still intact and unmodified in the game, it's everything else that got upgraded. I recommend checking it out sometime.
I never realized whitneys gym layout was the shape of a clefairy 🤯
The problem with thd whole "yanma should be a dragon type" is the Japanese name for dragonfly has nothing to do with dragons.
That subtle flex of having Pokerus for your elite four team!
I absolutely love the videos you do!! They are so calming and I love to listen to them while I play my sports games tbh lol Thank you for your great channel! Finally subbed, after all this time thinking I already was
Love the references to the third gen guides.
(Lay waste, etc.)
I remember beating red in crystal it was SO FUN i may replay it again
Pooping in your salad was so fun
I bought Crystal on the e shop and when I started playing it again, I just felt a rush of nostalgia from my childhood. Gen 2 was my childhood.
i had this exact guide book back in the day! thanks for the nostalgia trip, papasea. i think this inspired me to play crystal again before scarlet and violet next week!
Crystal is my favourite gen 2 game, partly because of the beautiful moving sprites
I'm surprised you actually managed to get Pokérus, which is rarer than getting a shiny.
that was the first time I ever got pokersus in a video
When I played Silver on my 3DS, I same across shinies like crazy, it was weird af
@@WilliamWallace1337 Make sure to treat Shiny Clefa warmly and kindly, they love to use Metronome
@@WilliamWallace1337 Well, if you played crystal, the odd egg shiny chance is 1/8
Nidorina and Nidoqueen have been canonically sterile since Gen 1, before breeding was even introduced as a game mechanic.
Pokemon Crystal, my first Pokemon Game i ever played, mine you I never owned a console, or pc or a phone until some time ago, I played Pokemon on my Mom's facebook account on her laptop through that free games things they had a while back, you couldn't save, so any progress you made was to be wiped out instantly when facebook was closed, I unkowningly learned the art of speedrunning Crystal from beginning to red in under 5 hours, I never could beat red though, my teams were always to bad for that, and even now, the only Pokemon game I have ever played
Pokemon Crystal was probably the last time I got a physical guide book.
I have such fond memories of playing this game with my best friend at the time. We spent hours building teams together!
Back again!! Love these videos!
Naming the rival ??? Was exactly what I did when I first played through gold as a kid for that exaxt reason. I was like "I don't know his name it just said ???"
I swear half the fun of these videos is wild stuff in the strategy guides that doesn't make sense sometimes
You can get Lapras in G/S too. There are a lot of references to "roaring" from deep in Union Cave.
Which is dumb because Lapras notoriously does NOT roar, lapras SINGS, in EVERY other appearance.
@@andyghkfilm2287 Makes me think of it was roaring in the Japanese version.
@@andyghkfilm2287 Wouldn't be the first time the Pokémon games are weird with their explanations of things. Just look at the status condition confused. Almost all moves that causes it makes the Pokémon Dizzy, so why didn't they call it that instead?
I remember before Heartgold and Soulsilver, I had a Firered and Leafgreen guidebook with some of the old Ken Sugimori artwork on the gen 2 Pokémon.
08:37 Just noticed Whitney’s Gym is in the shape of a Clefairy 😊
I'd love to see a Part 2, gen 2 is by far my favorite and Crystal's art style is still great today. I might have asked in another video, but would you ever be interested in running Crystal Clear? It's an open-world hack with a ton of new features, without changing too much of gen 2's core mechanics.
Gen 2 games were perfect.
This took me back. Thank you PaPa!
Great video as always, Sea!! I love the Nintended series. It makes me want to find guides and do something similar on my own channel!
I remember this guidebook being sold in blockbuster. Every day I went there after school to salivate over it. Those were the days
"Jumpin' Jack" might be a reference to the classic Rolling Stones song "Jumpin' Jack Flash"
brings back memories of the Metroid Prime/Fusion double guide and the Pokemon Gold/Silver guide with the foil cover
I had this book as a kid and I treated it like a cult artefact. I referred to it a ridiculous amount of times
I caught The cobra Kai reference too lol
Strike hard
Strike fast
Show no mercy
😂😂😂
I'd definitely love to see the second part to this!
Oh well
The guy talking about slowpoke tail being tasty tripped me out as a kid.
I had this guide. this is why I subbed to you. thanks for finally doing it! I actually used it to beat Pokemon Gold, funnily enough.
Oh man, back when I played Crystal for the 1st time in 2001 I also named my rival ???. You've gotten a nostalgic giggle out of me!
I genuinely laughed when you called the rival ??? because when I was a kid, that is EXACTLY what I did.
if you aren’t a snitch, it’s the only option
9:12 This could be referring to certain Pokémon and their hidden happiness stat. Say you purchase the cheap stuff for them and the happiness stat is worsened. Maybe potions and antidotes are neutral. I always had a feeling that the natural berries increased that stat to achieve evolution faster.
I had an old Pokemon yellow guide. I could spend a good time going through that book.
Would love to see a part 2! Great part 1 video
I love “don’t train in vain” 😂
This was my 2nd Pokémon game after silver - love it to bits!!
Plsss do a video for the postgame content aswell. I love all of your nintended videos!
13:26 at the tme muscle was still a machop only later you said it evolved
That is legit what i always named the rival as i really wanted to help the cops catch that guy...
I'm sure this Nintendo approved guide will be crystal clear on what Papasea needs to do! 😂
Lets just hammer away! 😁
Hammering away the like button before the video even starts. Crystal was my first Pokemon Game!
8:37 I was amazed as a kid when I found out that the gym layout is a clefairy.
I love that the guide makes a "London Calling" reference. Truly old school
Thanks for finally doing my favorite pokemon game! I remember playing this so much as a kid it's a wonder I didn't break the cart!!
Anyone else as a kid not bother training up their other pokemon, blasting through everything with their cyndaquil/quilava/typhlosion until you are near lv 100 with that starter, and crush the elite 4 using only 1 pokemon?
that sudowoodo shake sends the wrong message
Glad to see I wasn't the only one who thought you had to name the rival ??? during my first playthrough as a kid
I convinced myself that if I didn't name him ??? then the cops would never catch him and I'd lose the game lol it took me FOREVER to realize how dumb I was haha
I’m in the middle of playing through Crystal so it was fun to watch this
"Not to be confused with something else with a 34". Can't believe PapaSea just snuck that there.... ruhh rooh
I named my rival the same thing my first time lol I was confused but that’s what they showed his name to be
I usually end up with typhlosion that learns thunderpunch, gyarados with bite or crunch, dragonite with wing attack, kadabra for most of the elite four, pidgeot for fly and wing attack and one more for Lance. I think rockslide and rock throw can wreck most of Lance's team. It's been awhile but I change teams depending on starter
I still have that exact guide on my shelf next to the Pokemon Crystal Perfect guide from Versus Books.
I had that guide! I used it so much the spine wore out and my grandma had it replaced with a plastic spiral one :)
Crystal is my all time favourite pokemon game. Typhlosion, tyranitar, slowking, amphirous were my go to every playthrough.
I love that you still say "hammer away " in honor and memory of Eric
Really glad you chose chikorita for this. Thank you
im obsessed with these, i binged all of this series, im so glad u could provide me more to overdose on
It's worth pointing out that the odd egg has a 25% chance of being shiny
Yup 14% and 50% in the Japanese ones.
I unironically named silver ??? As a child...
I still have my original red/blue official guide i bought with red and any first GB Pocket in 98 i cherish that guide its so beautiful
I remember just how magical gen2 felt when it released as a 10yr old. My mom has ordered me an analogue pocket for Christmas, so I’ll be hunting for a mint copy of crystal with a fresh battery install for when my system gets delivered.
Edit: Yes I’m 33 years old, and my mom still shops for me for Christmas. Life should always be lived as closely to childhood as possible ❤
