What do you mean "they don't gain any exp once purified?" Well duh, if you use a cologne massage scent or a time flute they erase all currently gained exp on the shadow pkmn you are using them on. Did you not know that? LITERALLY ALL shadow pkmn gain exp when used at one of the 2 lead spots in a battle, and at purification they gain all that exp. You either battle to purify OR use cologne scents, you cannot do both.
I personally loved this game growing up. I got it as a present from my parents. When Rui was introduced and they had the option to name her I thought “Awesome! This is a two player game so I can play with someone!” So I named her Dad thinking I could play with my dad. It wasn’t a two player game and some random NPC that was a girl named Dad just followed me everywhere lol
Worth pointing out that Snagem and Cipher, while related are two seperate evil teams conspiring together. That distinction becomes more important in XD :)
The concept of playing a member of the local evil team who broke bad (or broke good I guess) is still so neat and an idea I can't believe Nintendo/Game Freak never really explored again. Like maybe even if maybe the protagonist isn't one, maybe they could reveal that a gym leader has a checkered past. Just so many good ideas gone to waste in this game.
The bonus disc is amazing. I bought it second hand for $20 in high school thinking it was the actual game. I didn’t get the actual full game until freshman year of college. This game is great, although the beginning is a bit tedious as espeon and umbreon don’t get many moves early on
@@alexpink3204 when i was a kid i beat the game with just the two starters, incl duel tower espeon ended up being like 88 and umbreon like 83, i used entei for like 5 level until i realized its shit af
One big issue in this game is the fact that it takes forever to purify the shadow pkmn, and that the cologne scent items and time flutes [only 3 in game] remove ALL exp when even one is used on any shadow pkmn. This means that you might spend hours grinding in Mt. Battle or other places to drain the meter to zero and gain exp for leveling, and after all that you use a cologne scent to get that teeny tiny bit of the purification bar to zero, and unknowingly erase every single one of the exp points gained. You basically have to carefully choose what you want to do to purify and what you want to purify. Because battling takes hours and hours, and the cologne scents take tons of money, but in the end you get the same results. But should you mix the two, it just erases all the exp.
Purifying speed and method is based on natures. If you get a good matched nature then its pretty fast but yea the legendaries take time no matter what.
That Meditite animation is nightmare fuel haha! I've never played this or XD. It would be cool if they could get re-released or remastered for the Switch.
YES. But without changing the Pokémon in-battle movement nor their body length to the current ones. Those were full of charm compared to the newest games...
I remember how excited I was when I got Colosseum. I was already an avid RPG fan in addition to loving Pokemon, so a darker Pokemon game with a vibe that reminded me of Trigun or Wild ARMs was just awesome. Also, here's a really cool sort of trick/ bonus thing: normally, since this game has no wild Pokemon, you can only get a finite amount, but if you want to add a Pokemon to your Colosseum game from a GBA game while still keeping all your Pokemon caught in Colosseum in that game, just trade one Pokemon for a Nincada from a Hoenn game, evolve the Nincada in Colosseum, and boom, you have two Pokemon from just that one, and you can trade to get your other Colosseum mon back and trade to add a new Pokemon to the game as well!
Oh god, I remember getting that damn Ho-Oh. It was a big deal at the time, since you couldn't really get one any other way. (Except events, maybe?) I still have the bugger in Sword/Shield/Pokemon Home, along with most of the other shadow Pokemon because I transferred them over the years. Which is honestly kind of wild that I have Pokemon that are nearly 20 years old.
Yeah, you to get the event key item MysticTicket from Pokemon Center NYC in 2005 to visit Naval Rock in Emerald or FireRed/LeafGreen. I was lucky enough to snag one myself, this was way more obtainable for most people.
I seem to remember the guide for this had misprinted all the postgame teams as having levels in the 80's when in reality they're all in the 60's. Not just one trainer, all of them. Made me grind to a high level in Mt. Battle before attempting them only to find out i was now ridiculously overleveled
5:16 the guide explains 3/8 moves wrong here. For Taunt, they actually describe the Encore effect, they don't specify that Snatch only works for status buffing/healing moves and they say that Reflect is stackable, which isn't the case.
Such an underrated but amazing game I couldn’t beat it as a kid but as an adult I hundred percented it and all I can say is while I did it out of love it was exhausting and took days
At 3:17 you mention that Wes stole the snagem machine but I’m not sure the game ever actually says what he intended on using it for (as the moment he rescues Rui he basically just goes “Pretty girl 😍 do what she says”)
I absolutely love pokemon colosseum. It's my favorite video game of all time. I played it so much as a kid that the clock stopped counting. It maxes out at 99:59.
One of the best Pokemon games I ever played. I really wish Nintendo will consider remaking this title or making more mature Pokemon titles. I was too young to understand how brilliant this title was, but as the years went on, I remembered it was my favorite game aside from Pokemon Crystal.
i replayed it 2 times in the last year, in all honesty, pokemon collosseum is pretty dull and overall shit. Short story, boring dialogues lackluster mechanics, idk everything sucks. Pokemon XD is way way better
I remember myself and my dad being ill and off school and work respectively, during the week this game was released. I can remember my gran turning up on the Monday afternoon with the game as a surprise for me and spending the week with my dad completing it. Will always have a soft spot for it
Thank you for this video! I FINALLY played through Colosseum just last year! What sucks though is that I got my copy used and it had a few small scratches. Luckily I was able to finish the whole game and transfer my Pokemon to a GBA cart. But... when I got to the LAST FIGHT in Mt Battle (the 100 round post-game version) the game crashed - meaning that my Mt Battle progress was gone. As badly as I wanted that Ribbon (which, we're talking full-lockdown times here, so it was pretty bad) I wasn't about to spend several hours/days redoing the entire thing for nothing due to a few small scratches that were on the disc.
God I have so many memories with this game... I was young enough that I remember using the game dialogue to practice reading. My brother and I spent hours and hours on this game in the house we grew up in, taking turns in the 1p campaign or linking our gameboy advances and battling with our RSE teams. We'd always fight about which pokemon to keep on the team in the campaign, and once I accidentally KOd the shadow Yanma and he was so mad at me we didn't play for a week. All of these silly memories, this game, the time I spent with it... all very cherished to me.
3 unanswered questions from my many many playthroughs of this game: 1. why does wes not just climb the gate blocking the laboratory? 2. why does wes just not hop the gaping hole the peons blow in the basement of the under? jumping from a pipe you could totally make that. 3. ho-oh watched them do everything they did, and waited till Wes stopped everything and everyone, and ONLY THEN intervened to stop the villains? wtf ho-oh? why not fly in to Phenac City and blow up the mayors house when Wes arrived in the city?
yes, randomly blow up a random innocent mayors house the entire region would be after your head. you need to cover your own ass. you cant kill the faux affably evil bbeg with good publicity until they are outed as the bbeg unless you want to be arrested. same as killing baby Hitler. if someone just shows up and kills a random baby that is not going to be well received.
Gotta appreciate a game where Papa gets to beat Willie during the first 10 minutes. Some of the names in the game are comedy gold in other languages too, surprisingly.
i really like the implied backstory that Wes is from The Under, which is very much the slums of Pyrite Town, which is ALREADY kind of the slums of Orre. It makes it sort of make sense that Wes falls in with Snagem, considering that that kind of thing happens a lot to underprivileged kids.
"I don't know why there are so many explosions in this game?" Uh PaPaSea, explosions are cool! If something has any explosions, it is deemed cool, even if it doesn't make sense lol
The best feature of Coliseum is the broken snag mechanic - you don't have to win the battle to steal the Pokemon. You can actually get all the Johto starters by intentionally losing. They did 'fix' this for XD. Worst feature is daycare, sooo expensive.
@Big Boss24 is right it’s great but it requires a lot of grinding and you really need to be careful about who you choose to have on your team because the final boss is really tough
I noticed that the description of taunt was actually describing torment near the start. Also the DNA sample have about 6/7 locations and it puts them in 3 random ones out of the multiple possible places. I'm basing that on multiple of my playthroughs where they have been in slightly different locations.

The reason why this game is remembered so fondly these days is it shows how bad the modern games are. The animations in Colosseum are so incredible good and it makes the switch games look like an absolute joke in comparison.
Ah. So you did eventually realize this game has two evil teams...but no, Snagem did NOT steal the snag machine from Cipher. They invented and made it, themselves.
I was so scared playing this game as a kid, it was too dark! I remember hitting a point where I was too terrified to even turn on my GameCube ever again. Watching this will be therapy for me, I can close this dark chapter of my life at last!
Someone has probably commented already, but the deal with the weird names is that they're meant to sound very different from the names in the main games, which in turn is because of the region the game is set in. The region of each of the mainline games up to the point Collosseum came out correspond to real world areas in Japan, while Colosseum is set in an area that corresponds to the real world Arizona desert. So basically, the developers wanted to put emphasis on how different this part of the pokemon world was from everything else we had seen up to this point. Of course, later generations of pokemon had regions that corresponded to areas outside of Japan as well, and they didn't have names that were nearly as weird (though there are obviously exceptions such as Ghetsis)
I personally love Colosseum and DX the most out of all the Pokemon games because of the focus on double battles. The change results in both new strategies and making previously mediocre/bad moves somewhat useful (Seriously, a skill-swapped Slaking is terrifying). The soundtrack is absolutely masterful and fit the environment perfectly. Best of all, the trainers in Colosseum and DX generally have decent AI and Pokemon, compared to the main series where I find trainer AI questionable and their team composition irrational outside boss characters.
During my playthrough at the battle shown in 18:00, the Hitmontop got paralyzed by Static and Pikachu almost managed to beat it up. I wonder what happens when the Pikachu actually wins
Gonna have a long day at med school, just seeing this makes me happy lol papasea, you just got me 30 blissful minutes in bed before I go to sleep! Hope XD follows soon
XD was my favorite out of the two games. One of the reasons being that you can choose which eevee evolution you want. Man, these games were so much fun. Brings back some really good memories. Used to have my friend across the street come to my house and help me level and purify pokemon.
I know a lot of people who watch this probably don't play or care about pokemon go.. but this game introduced shadow pokemon, which are a very big thing in pokemkn go pvp.. they get a 20% attack increase in exchange for a 20% defense debuff.. purifying a pokemon sets their stats back to normal but is also the only way to get the move return
This may have been a 1st release thing, but I remember that you immediately added the shadow pokemon to your party in Colosseum, but in XD they fixed that to add to your party after the battle. I remember beating Evice for the first time that way by using his T-Tar against him right after catching it.
17:18 "We also learn that apparently, the evil team in this game is called Team Cipher, not Team Snaggem. Apparently, I was getting 'em mixed up with Team Snaggem from Pokemon XD." XD's evil team isn't Snaggem, either. It's just Team Cipher again. However, in Colosseum, they were working with Snaggem to steal Pokemon to be shadowfied.
Hell yeah!! One of my favorite games growing up even if I didn't have a memory card at the time. I can't wait to watch it all after work! I and my friends only got as far as duking's fight
I can explain what's up with the names. Because the game is supposed to take place in Arizona, which is a foreign location to Japanese people, Orre is treated as well as a very foreign region. The nonsense names are supposed to sound foreign compared to the more normal sounding names in main series Pokemon. EDIT: Cipher isn't called Team Cipher. Its just Cipher. The Under is a mining town that just happens to also be being used by Cipher. And Team Snagem didn't steal the Snag Machine from Cipher. They invented it.
Pokemon Colosseum is hands down the best game, I still have some of my Colosseum mons on my FireRed copy it got me thinking to buy a new copy of Colosseum since my old copy and memory card was lost
After stumbling on these series of yours the craziest thing I’ve learned is that there were multiple editions of strategy guides and not just one Prima or Nintendo Power
Correction: Cypher and Snegem are both teams in this game. Team Snagem steals pokemon and then they sell them to Cypher to experiment on to make them Shadow Pokemon. Wes is a former member of Snagem, but your big goal is to stop Cypher because of how unethical the whole Shadow Pokemon plan is.
One other huge correction: Shadow Pokemon DO get experience when purified, it just holds all the experience you earn in battles and then when you purify them you get it all at once. So Entei didn't give you any experience because you used the time flute, but if you purified any other Pokemon then you'd just gain a ton of levels as soon as you touch the Relic Stone when their Heart Gauge is pure white.
God, 2003?! I remember getting this game when it came out, along with Ruby when I was 5! I still never fully completed this game. Might be time to break out the old GameCube.
Agate is a real world gem stone and the E at the end isn't emphasized when you say it, more like 'Agg-it.' Gave me a little chuckle, love the series! working my way through them all!

God, how would I love a remaster of this games for the switch. Colosseum and Gale of Darkness.
AYYYY ITS COLOSSEUM!! I got the pre-order bonus discs recently, it’s so nice to have Celebi and Jirachi in Gen 3
The battle against Nascour was surprisingly intense because it doesn't have any background music.
If you listen closely you'll hear the crowd chanting his name
@@mr.shuckle6656 so you're saying the battle being surprisingly intense wasn't a 9.5 out of 10, it was a 9.55.
@@shuckletamergaming most def
@@mr.shuckle6656 understandable
I think the abundance of Johto pokemon in this is because of the lack of them in RSE
This is one of my favorite games of all time , I have such good memories with it and I love when Pokémon games go a little dark
The hammer away and lay waste in two shakes of a lambs tail, throw back from fire red
It's cool seeing all of a trainer's Pokémon right next to them in full model form.
This may have been a 1st release thing, but I remember that you immediately added the shadow pokemon to your party in Colosseum, but in XD they fixed that to add to your party after the battle. I remember beating Evice for the first time that way by using his T-Tar against him right after catching it.
Might have put 5000 hours into that game. Played it so many times through.
6:02
oh my god this guy I forgot about this guy
literally just fuckin' Dark Riku from Kingdom Hearts
6:00 You'd hate to meet Kuja in Final Fantasy IX, then.
Hell yeah!! One of my favorite games growing up even if I didn't have a memory card at the time. I can't wait to watch it all after work!
I and my friends only got as far as duking's fight
Nascor is straight up a mix of evil Riku and Ansem from kingdom hearts 1.
I loved this game when I had it. Medichamp's highjump kick always came in clutch.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, a mesothelioma lawyer may be able to get you compensation.
They assault you “oh no” idk why that was so funny
AAAAAA! IT IS THE GUIDE I HAD!! Just a different cover!
I remember the book had such a confusing time with the Jhoto starters. I loved it! XD
But they do regain all of their missed experience when you purify them. You used the flute for Entei so it didn't have any to regain
wow. you made this game look way easier than it actually is. It's considered one of if not the hardest official pokemon game for reasons.
it really wasnt that hard except for the last few fights
16:07 Why would you go all the way back to Phennec city to heal? There's a healing station in the building before the cave
The bad guy looks like Riku from KH1
Wouldn't mind seeing a remake of this game. I never had the chance to play the original as a kid.
The fact that the captions are saying God when you said guide is hilarious.
My only issue with this game is that it never explains how the final boss can float.
God, 2003?! I remember getting this game when it came out, along with Ruby when I was 5! I still never fully completed this game. Might be time to break out the old GameCube.
Oh man memory lane. Wish they would bring this title back to the switch. It would sell so well for them.
Been trying to find this game for awhile but everywhere I look it’s 100+ dollars. All I want to do is relive a part of my childhood.
I had the official Nintendo guide from the official Nintendo Power magazine. I never had any of the issues you did.
Agate is a real world gem stone and the E at the end isn't emphasized when you say it, more like 'Agg-it.' Gave me a little chuckle, love the series! working my way through them all!
It always makes me smile video after video when I realize Hopes and Dreams is playing in the intro, is my favourite Undertale song :)
I would love to see a remake of this on the switch!
