Modified thinset to install Ditra over wood and unmodified when installing over concrete.
What do I use between ditra and porcelain tile? Modified or unmodified thinset? Thank you!
I thought ditra recommended unmodified under because of lack of air drying capabilities? Always confused about this

Thanks for all the awesome videos Shannon! Question: would you use the Schluter Kerdi band in this situation to seal the seams or the walls? Or is the uncoupling membrane fine without it?
If you are trying to form a water proof floor then yes you would use kerdi band down onto the floor and up the wall. If it does not need to contain water then there is no need.

Shannon, nice video. I've taken up my old tile from wood floor and will use a membrane prior to laying new tile. How cleaned up does wood floor need to be prior to applying thinset and membrane? Big stuff obviously, but what about old thinset...does it need to be co.pletely removed? Thanks again.

I'm creating a bathroom in an attic space. Right now there's 3/4" tongue and groove subfloor. It's 80 years old but in decent shape (attic was never used). Do I still need to put another subfloor on top of that before Ditra? If so, what is the minimum thickness if other subfloor is 3/4"? Thank you!

Great video. I just have simple question. I'm redoing a basement and I have a cement floor. Are these membranes universal in that respect or do I have to get one that'll work with cement floors? I'm going to be doing a small bathroom with a toilet and vanity.

Do you ever recommend using hardie-backer when installing tile on an OSB floor? Or is a membrane like Schluter now considered the 'minimum'? I've seen some guys say 1/4" backer board isn't enough?
I'm a bigger fan of the decoupling membranes but I have used 1/2" backer board in the past.
How long before you could walk on this?
I'm trying to tile my hallway and I have found a bump in the floor where two pieces of subfloor meet on a joist (basement is below us). What are my options? Will the ditra float over that?
I would try and plane or sand down that high spot to reduce the problem. You can install over it but you will still have to deal with it while tiling. Fixing it first will make tiling easier.
Would this membrane be a good choice to tile across a joint between a plywood subfloor and a concrete subfloor (that are at the same level)? This is on the first floor of our house. The plywood has a crawlspace under it, while the concrete is block all the way down to grade.
Anything like that should have a transition piece installed IMO.
If I were finishing a basement, could I just put down the membrane and tiles, or should I put the wood sheets over the membrane and then tile it?
These membranes can be installed right over concrete and the tile is always installed over the membrane

This can not be applied directly over wood planks. If they are 3/4" thick you then need a 1/2" layer of plywood or OSB also. Check out Schluters website for more info,
I am remodeling a bathroom and need to remove old Ditra. How do you do that? Especially the film/ fleece that is stuck to the subfloor?
Not a fun job when the thinest was done correctly. Scrapping down to the sub floor is usually the only way. What tool you use depends on what you have and how well it will work for you. Absolutely the last option would be grinding it off.
@@HouseImprovements "Not fun" is such a understatement!!! I used an air hammer with a chisel (maybe 1/2"). Took me like 5 hours to remove 6' x 8' of Ditra. Absolutely exhausting! More tired than running 10K! But at the end the OSB is reasonably clean. Next time will use a wider chisel to do the job. It is doable, but very very tiring LOL.
I had tp rip out my entire kitchen floor because of a cracked drain that was running out a whole in the wall , into the wood underlayment since the cabinets were put in before tile, under the tile snd through the gaps in thinset in the poorly laid tile . Since it was a drain and not a pressurize pipe it went unoticed until tiles stated poping off. Now i have to rebuild and i am tiling under cabinets and waterproofing everything lol. Its a kitchen floor and shouldn't see a whole lot of sitting water but i am not about to do this again lol
Im curious but is the seam between each sheet not waterproofed then?
If you actually want the floor water proofed then you need to install "Kerdi band" on the joints and also on the perimeter and flashed up the drywall if you want it to hold water. Check out Schluters website for info.
For most cases for just the bathroom floor water proofing that amount is really not necessary. The tiles and this Mapei CQ flex colour grout make it spill proof IMO. If doing a shower floor though you want to go the extra steps for water proofing.

Do you have to mortar the membrane down
Actually now ( 2023 ) they do have a self stick option but I have never used it yet. This membrane in the video is mortared down
Can you explain to a layperson why in the mortar section they would sell a non modified mortar that says on the package you can buy our polymer modifier and add that 2gal jug instead of water, and right next to this is modified mortar that you only need to add water to? At the time of posting this comment the non modified was $25 and the polymer add in liquid was also $25 so that's $50 a bag/bucket when mixed whereas the modified mortar was only $32. Is polymer additive liquid better than pre mixed or something? I can't wrap my head around the massive price jump.

More like 2000+ years ago ;) That's why the Romans used sand under their mosaics, and why so many exist today in pristine condition :P
Why cant you just staple it down
Because over time it will rip, lift up and create air pockets for water to set in, and that will cause mold or even tile to move and crack.
will never work that way.
