One of my all time fave 50's, this lens is special, unique and a Legend. Хобби
I’ve had this lens for 10yrs, and at first it was very intimidating and slippery with that razor thin depth of field. But when it hit a shot in focus it blew me away and made me realize how truly legendary this lens is. It’s not for the squeamish as you need to really learn how to handle this lens in your given camera body. I recently upgraded from a Canon 60D to an R6 and this really took of with the new electronics and feels like it got a 300% upgrade. I agree with you 100% in this Vlog.
An artist and his brushes, a photographer and his lenses... excellent!
Thank you for another excellent review! I've owned this lens for over 10 years and it is magic. It will remain in my family until the end. Heirloom worthy.
I've just finished 3 day music festival shoot in my home town. My 85 f1.2 and 24 f1.4 are my go to lenses for evening shots and I love them!
One of the hugest reasons that mirrorless cameras are so great is that they have contrast detection and/or on sensor phase detection so you don't have to worry about front or back focusing. On DSLR's the phase detection sensor is separate and *supposed* to be an equal distance to the focusing plane as the sensor is. But that's not always the case, especially in cheaper cameras where the manufacturing tolerances are looser.
Those where some REALLY GOOD photos! The Canon colors in those jpegs are superb!
Thanks for your thoughts--I have the Canon 50mm f/1.4 (and a few L lenses that I love), and I'm looking to upgrade my 50mm to the f/1.2 L at some point because 50mm is the focal length I actually shoot with most. (I should probably clarify here that I am a part-time professional family and engagement portrait photographer, not just the average consumer.) Your review is definitely helpful.
I'm also going to look into the back-focusing settings you mentioned. My 50mm f/1.4 has had some issues with focusing in certain situations, and I always thought the only way to fix it was to take it somewhere and get it calibrated.
A great lens ,, I briefly owned the EF 50mm 1.0,, which was sharp and fun,, but very low-contrast wide-open and the AF was pitifully slow even in daylight. I sold it and bought one of these and never regretted it,,,, though the new 50mm 1.2 RF-mount looks to be even better.
Great. Perfect description of the unique look of this lens.
Thanks for another excellent review. ISO 25,600 looked pretty good, especially in color. Now the 85mm f/1.2 L to complete your set of Canon glass.
This guy really looks like aged Johny Sins
Using liveview on the 1DxII with this lens means completely perfect focus. My most favourite personal images have been with this lens. I know this may sound crazy, but the Tamron 45 1.8 in a way has some of this magic also.
Great review images look amazing.
Saving up for this magical lens!~
Great review. Many thanks!😊
Just got this lens .... I love it! Should have gotten it sooner!
Finally got it today, this review made me buy one after planning it for years
I use the Canon 85mm 1.2 II and I was the first time I used it on my Canon 1DX Mark II not impressed at all. Until I found out this lens had a great backfocus on my camera. I had to adjust it to +16 in Microadjustment. Now...it blows me away. It is sharp in the center at 1.2 like hell. And the bokeh...oh man... Super creamy. And it is a light-monster. All you need for a great, great portrait lens. I assume the 50mm 1.2 is the same and I am seriously thinking to buy a used one for adding it to my collection.
Some great pics. The 25k iso pics were very surprisingly usable.
I agree with all you said. I also love this lense. But I prefer using it with adapter on an a9 because the canon bodies although perform well in low light I dislike their lack of sharpness
Thanks, love this. Debating whether to buy this one used or the new mirrorless 1.2?
What one did you buy?
How does this lens compare to the older FD 50mm 1.2L?
I can imagine the new R6 and R5 with their eye-AF to be awesome with this lens. At least half the price of the (amazing) RF 50 1.2 L.
I’ve heard many good things about that lens but it’s crazy expensive. My current favourite 50 (ish) lens is the Helios 44-2 which is 58mm f2. Have you used this lens? It’s manual focus and I only use it when I’m experimenting but when it all comes together I’ve created some of my favourite images with that (on my Sony bodies). I use native Sony lense when it’s critical I get the shot.
The rendering of the 50mm f/1.2... sublime.
Did you dial this one in manually or also using FoCal?
Thank you for the review! Focus and recompose or using the other focus points on f1.2? I purchased FoCal and am about to calibrate mine
Question I have a canon 24-70 2.8 i shoot fashion…and portraits sometime I shoot events
Should I sell the 24-70 to get the canon 50mm 1.2 or keep what I have I just want super sharp
Images
Do the EOSHD profiles work on 6d mark 2? Good for stills too?
Definitely at the forefront of my current GAS want list :)
How does it compare to the Leica SL 50 Summilux? Thanks.
How does the RF 50 1.2 compare?
I’ve heard the same great review by other youtubers. I don’t have time, or patients, to test multiple 50mm lenses. Thank you !!! I’m picking one up from B&H used 👍🏽
***Iknow this isn’t a review. BUT. My 50 came in. I returned it the next day 😢. Took it on a class field trip. Indoor / outdoor. Wow. The autofocus is so bad. I could live with the softness but when most of the images are out of focus it’s frustrating. Shot between 1.4 and 2.8. The open range just couldn’t focus even on good light. ***
I am having the same problem you should not have returned it. You have to go into micro adjustments to change the center of the focusing. You can change it for every individual lens. So you wouldn't have had to give up the lens. He spoke of this in the beginning of the film. 1:25 in
Just wondering if there's a mark 2 ‼️ version of this lens
This or the 35mmm 1.4L on 5D classic I see you said you used it on that body?
I love it too!!!
i got one of theses canon 50mm f1.2L lenses and i paid £490.00 BOXED and is in very good lens to have
Will this work on my canon eos 3?
Do you shoot manual under these circumstances?
If you enjoy 50mm so much, I'd like to hear what 50mm would you recommend for M4/3 system.
I believe you can get adapter rings for EF to M4/3 for this camera. I am only saying that because I would like to see this giant beast of a lens on a 4/3 body. LOL!
This is my favorite lens for my A7RII. Out of all the lenses I have I would never trade this one!
Marv Oski using it with metabones ? Reliable autofocus?
night crawler a7r2 with sigma mc11 struggle in lowlight. But a73 mc11 with canon 50f1.2 never miss focus even in extreme lowlight and f1.2
Looking forward to the new RF 50 mm F 1.2 L USM lens for the EOS R!
Have u tried nikon 58 1.4g ..?
I love this lens. But do you get a plastic creak when you pinch it on the sides? I'm not sure if it's normal. I bought mine brand new exactly a year ago, to this day.
Mine creeks too... :(
Could I have a link to those color presets?
Awesome pictures of the band. I'm a big fan of are, bure, bokeh, to use the Japanese label. 👍🏻
good review.
You're a legend
What would you set the setting to on the canon 1.2 in in micro adjustments? it says +8 in the vdeo but that is not the 1.2 on the camera you have the 24 mm 1.4 on the camera.
There is no set micro adjustment for a camera body or lens. DSLR bodies and lenses themselves VARY from copy to copy. The AF adjustments can even change slightly as the lens or body ages.
I bet this is nice on the M50. You should try it.
Is it version ii or version i?
I had one, loved it, but the focus shift was the problem i couldnt live with
I've learned photografy with one pentax like this. Never tested this one but I can tell that never in the digital world found something even worthy of compare.
I'm a Sony shooter these days but this was one of the handful of Canon lenses I kept. Amazing how many special images I get with this one. More than many of my technically superior lenses.
Think happy thoughts, laugh out loud, and surround yourself with people who genuinely care about you. They will help you through this challenging time as a Sony shooter.
Def not a soft lens. Just to spread the knowledge: it suffers from coma wide open but this is not the same as having low resolution. Coma can be fixed where as resolution and microcontrast cannot be “fixed” in post. Resolution and microcontrast can be masked to a certain small degree with certain editing. However resolution and microcontrast loss involves missing data rather than just distortion of data, like that seen with coma. Coma is distortion, not loss and can be fixed with the global contrast slider.
I’m confused between 50mm 1.2l and 35mm 1.4l ii I want both but can’t afford. I’m thinking 50 now since it’s cheaper then 35mm 1.4l ii
Lavli Singh definitely the 50mm!
What about Canon 50mm f/1.0? Or new 50mm f/1.2 RF?
Is this lens good for astrophotography?
Magical lens indeed
The lens everyone should have in their arsenal
The pictures were fantastic, it was a treat viewing. I like what you said about them not being tec. perfect but that it was art, your art! So cool!
I like this lens. It has a very special character full open. Stopped down it is just another 50mm lens.
I think it is chromatic aberration. Pixel peepers do not like it, That is their problem.
This one is for those who love it. Try to find one at a reasonable price second hand.
Not easy. Those who got it won't let it go.
Now I use it with my Sony A7III. Good, even better than with Canon 5D4.
Then you're not using it right. It's pretty much optimal for almost any usage. Portraits, sports, even landscape if you want to.
How about it with R5
Can you dial in the focus in 6d mark 2?
Yes
Andy Seward any tutorials on this?
Should definitly check out the old but fantastic EF 50mm f2.5 Macro.
I have it. It almost same color rendering as 1.2L.
its the perfect balance between sharp and soft, it renders fantastic. i really regret selling mine to my girlfriend. personally i think the best sweetspot is at 1.8
If the sweet spot is at 1.8, why then bother with this 1.2?
marry your girlfriend and get it back :-)
I have canon eso 5DS R it's ok 50mm f1.2
I wonder if this lens was radio active?
I know you're not a Nikon guy, but have you shot with a Nikon 50mm 1.2?
Nikon primes are nowhere near canon's. Nikon zooms are better than canon's, tho.
Matt Granger did a side-by-side comparison of the two and found them to be very similar. One was warmer than the other.
How does it perform on the EOS R? I consider getting this lens because the RF version is so expensive.
Why only expensive stuff is always your favourite. Review some budget lenses with amazing quality whice i can afford too ☺️.
Because he must be loaded that's why. He has so much equipment it's crazy.
sher khan because most budget gear is junk
To make a decent f1.2 lens costs a lot of money. If you want a great Canon 50mm, get the f1.8. The old MKI version has slightly better build quality.
Or, read about some cine lenses and their prices, and you'll be amazed at how cheap this lens is.
Budget and amazing don’t go together. The new canon 50 1.2 for the Canon R is $2300. So compared to the R lens it is a budget.
Cool ! Laszlo Montreal
this len not sharpest len but for shadow dof and night shots. you can add sharpness in post
I got used one for $650 for my a7iii. A low light monster combo beat my sony lens in term of render color of night.
$650? That’s a steal! Super great deal
@@peterc3619 yes, it has crack in meter screen but every fine, super focus/eyefocus in my a73/mc11 and clean glass. I'm not afraid to use the combo in night party with friends.
Giap Nguyen ah yes, night shots. And I actually just bought a mint one for $750. Well below any price I’ve seen ever online. Can’t wait to test it out
Seems you never tested the best fifty (-five)? The Otus.
New RF version coming soon
Afaik the 50 1.2L isnt weather sealed?
Awesome channel. Subscribe
What’s the name of the preset used?
50 1.2 is my favorite lens.
I own this lens for quite a while, and I would say the only magical thing about it is, how much CA and softness a lens for 1K can produce :-D Stil lI will keep it forever since it is an emotional descision to have a 1.2 lens, not a rational one.
DeKarle1992 it’s not a perfect lens but if you know how to work with it you can create unique images , believe me
Great pictures! However I also used to own this lens 10 years ago and sold it because of it's awful focus shift. You may be able to calibrate the camera for a given aperture, but once you change it it will misfocus again.
this lens with the new eos r face and eye af must be crazy
In fact it is. Best lens i ever own and the EOS R it's just a beast. It outperforms my 5d mk4 at focusing. However i won't stand a chance for sports photography the mk4 is way better
Well, actually, the 50L has AF problems only when stopped down and up close. It is called focus shift. The rest of the AF problems must be camera's fault.
I will wait for the forthcoming Nikkor full frame autofocus Z mount 50mm f/1.2 S lens.
In 2020 it will be 14 years younger than the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM and undoubtedly much better.
Also after two years Nikon will be wise enough to update its Z series cameras with double slots for memory cards.
Maybe Fuji Will buy Nikon 😂😂
Newer isn’t always better. Especially when Nikon is concerned - newer usually means more cheaply made.
Party on Wayne I have the Sony a7 and I have to say that it's construction can't be compared with Canon dSLR cameras of similar prices. It is very inferior. But my Sony a7 is small and light and that is more important for my travels.
I can only confirm - this lens is a real light monster, which has to be tamed. Worth it if you want that extra Bokeh.
It's a gorgeous lens, but it's too pricey for a 50mm. Most people don't need f/1.2. I'm cool with f/1.8 on a full frame camera. I take my legacy Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 lens out sometimes, but rarely need it at f/1.4.
CODER QN
Loved the 1.4 for shooting portraits with my 1980 vintage Cannon A-1.
50 mm is quite versatile. Photographer at my niece’s recent wedding used a 50 throughout, though a stunning profile pic she chose for her FB page was shot by a guest standing behind me, in low light, with an IPhone 7 Plus.
Use it on the new R8 and you will have a new experience …nails focus every single time…scary 😂
Yes, there's just something about it. It's called MICROCONTRAST. That's what L lenses have that non L don't.
Очень много воды в разговоре.....
1st here😉
The bokeh balls are awful in my opinion, based on the image at 3:26
Annoying intro
I just drill a hole in my garage door and then copy the image the sun shines on the wall with chalk and crayons and it works just as good as this lens.
Надоел... Ухожу... Блаблабла....
The Canon EF 50L lense is the WORSE prime lens that Canon has ever made. It does not belong in the same leage as these: 24L, 35L, RF 50L, 85L's, 100L, 135L, 200L's, 300L, 400L, 500L, 600L. The EF 50 L has a flawed design and that is why it is not sharp wide open, nor is it remarkably sharp stopped down from F1.2. You want to know what Magic really is? Its the new Canon Rf 50L F1.2. Granted it only works with R bodies, but the point is the RF 50L is everything the EF 50L hoped to be but never was. Like terrible cars, terrible lenses have a strange following of people that idealize them, say they have "soal", the "render beautifully" and other rubbish, to somehow mask the truth, the reality that the product is junk. If you don't believe me about the perfect Canon RF 50L, go out and try one for a few days...after that you'll never want to use the EF 50L ever again....you'll be smitten like many and myself were.
To criticise sharpness at f1.2 means you don’t have a clue about the requirements of photographers that want artistic effects. I can only assume that you do product photography for toothbrushes or similar and want to see every detail of a brush with plenty of bokeh. For portraits the clients do not want to see every wart, pimple or facial flaw in fine detail.
@kirkcurcus, to not appreciate and expect excellent sharpness at f1.2 for a 50mm lens exposes your incompetence, and lack of experience in portraiture photography. You should get out and shoot more, and learn instead of making newbie claims that show your ignorance.
@@TheSilverGlow I don’t converse with dullards.
@@TheSilverGlow what does sharpness to do with competence? maybe all greatest photographers and photographs are incompetent according to your logic…
@@kirkcircushe forgot that photography is an art… and to be honest, no client will say “your photo lack sharpness” or “oh you shoot with ef 50 1.2 must be a newbie” 😂
The Canon EF 50L is a junk lens, and no "legend". These people make me laugh...such low standards they have. People that truly know see this lens for what it is; a very flawed lens with all kinds of problems like too soft wide open and focus shift issues with AF. I've had two copies and both were too soft at f1.2 and both suffered from focus shift when AF used. For $1,300 a prime should be very sharp wide open and it should not have focus shift issue by design. The EF 50L is NOT in the same league of excellence as these: 35L, 85L, 100L, 135L, 200L, not even close BUT, the Canon RF 50L f1.2 is the very, very best 50mm prime one can buy across all brands. I have the RF 50L and it is everything the old junk EF 50L was not. All this happy talk about the flawed EF 50L is by people who do not know...they will agree with me once they get their hands on the Canon RF 50L....night and day....the differences cannot be denied...and the RF 50 renders in truly magical ways, and razor-sharp wide open and no focus shift.
I had one, loved it, but the focus shift was the problem i couldnt live with
