    After 35 years shooting Canon ( all the way back to the FD system) I found that my most used lens for the last 5 years has been my 24-105mm f4L coupled with my ef85mm f1.8 and old "Magic Drainpipe" 80-200mm f2.8L. Still a super sharp combo on my 5D and only $1,500 total for the great glass

    My Top 5:
    1. 16-35 f4L IS (f2.8 if you're into Astro)
    2. 24mm 1.4L II
    3. 24-70 f2.8 II
    4. 85mm 1.4L IS
    5. 70-200 f2.8 IS USM 2 or 3.
    Canon 400mm f2.8 IS II usm for Wildlife/Sports stuff.

    • @danlightened

      Why the 24mm when both 16-35 and 24-70 are covering that focal range?
      Is the 24 substantially that good than the other 2?
      I get that the aperture is considerably bigger but I'd assume the 24mm is mostly for landscape. Is f/1.4 required for landscape?

    Serious mistake to chose 50mm f/1.2 over the 35mm f/1.4 L II. The later has much better optics and the 50mm suffers from lacking a floating element which effects the AF badly at portrait distances (if you stop down).

  • @bonamin
    @bonamin 6 лет назад +22

    My most practical would be the 24-70 and 70-200.
    I've got the 24-70 f4 IS and the 70-200 2.8 non-IS.
    But if I had to choose a favorite that would be the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2
    That thing is INSANE.

      I’m always slightly worried about using this lens out and about, it is slow but such a wide aperture coupled with this focal length allows for some dreamy portraits.

    • @AndreasLudwigPhD
      @AndreasLudwigPhD 5 лет назад +1

      The 1.2 is great for portraits - as long as the subject is patiently posing for you. Forget taking pics of kids, pets etc. Focussing is way too slow. And f1.2 is hardly ever successful. Then you take 1.4 or 1.8 - and can get the much faster (in focussing) new 85mm lens with IS. It's cheaper, too.

    • @xereeto

    Canon 35 f/1.4 II - probably the best lens I've ever used. Fast AF, even in low light. Insanely sharp. Beautiful bokeh. I have the 50 1.2 as well and often this one is used more often in portrait work.

  • @AndreasLudwigPhD
    @AndreasLudwigPhD 5 лет назад +4

    Man. The 11-24 is amazing for architecture, indoors and city travel. I used it last week for running through London and taking snaps of pretty much everything. Just take a small nifty fifty with it for the occasional portrait shot and you are happy. Yes, it is heavy. Yes, it is not cheap - but the images are crazy.

  • @mariuspettersen-no

    My all time favorite is the 85/1.2L. I also adore Canon's cheaper 35mm, the f/2 IS, and 135/2L (traded for 100L macro), but also the older Nikon 17-35/2.8 and 80-200/2.8.

  • @stevespencer4634
    @stevespencer4634 6 лет назад +5

    We all have different needs and, just as important, different limitations. Mine are financial and fitness. I frequently photograph motorcycle trials, here in Queensland, where it is mostly hot, humid and hot, occasionally just hot. I find myself hoofing it up and down hills, bashing through forests and wading streams. I may also have to execute the odd ninja move because SNAKE!!! Consequently, my total lens kit on a shoot comprises a 16-35 f/2.8L, a 24-105 f/4L and a 70-200 f/2.8L. For 90% of the time, I will have the 24-105 on one body and the 70-200 on another, hanging from a double-camera harness. This setup produces excellent results, gives me a great working range and creative flexibility, but also reduces lens swaps to an absolute minimum, pretty important in dry and dusty locations. I will usually take the 16-35 along too, which can be a lifesaver in heavily wooded sections, but only when shooting riders I can trust!
    So for me, the best lenses are those that produce great results, but are also practical and affordable. Boring, eh?

    Canon 50mm f/1.2
    Sigma 105mm f/1.4 (not native Canon I know but I'm pretty sure I would prefer it to the 85s)
    Canon 300mm f/2.8 (AKA the beast)

    Canon 70-200mm f/2.8

    The best if the best for me would include 85mm f1.2 version 1 and the 135 f2 both very sharp and pricy. Ended up selling the 85 f1.2 a few years ago as it was not being used as much as I thought it would. Coming in down the line is the 50mm f1.4 greats for street photography and some portrait work.

      35mm 1.4 II has become my favorite lens. I avoided 35mm lenses for 10 years because I thought they were boring until I realized the 35mm really shines at 1.4 on full frame. It can surprisingly isolate the subject very well, pretty much all the time, which is different that than turning your background into watercolors, but as for composition, it's a real workhorse. Now it is always 1 of the 2 lenses that's always with me. The other one being wider or more telephoto. And sorry to say the 50mm 1.2 rarely makes it out these days now that the 35mm has taken its place.

    It's 2023 and I am just getting into the EOS EF system. Why? I love shooting film, I am getting older, my eye sight is getting weaker and I want to continue shooting 135 film with modern features such as reliable auto-focus and image stabilization. I got myself an EOS 1n and EOS 1v on the cheap, I added the 24-105 f4 L IS (first version), the 50mm f1.2l (it has back focus issues, focuses an inch behind where the focus point is, sent back on warranty), I ordered a 35mm f2 IS USM. I got a 24mm L tilt shift (first version). I am looking into more stabilized glass to allow for sharper images on lower ISO film. I also added a used 5DII to the kit. It's amazing how cheap all of that stuff has become. My Leica setup has competition now.

However I do not use it wide open. the best things are the satisfying weight and balance, really big bright viewfinder, colour reproduction, a focal length I really like, minimal shutter snap. I have a couple other FL lenses - 35mm f2.5 and 85mm f1.8 both really good, but my favourite is the 58mm.

      Got it, Richard. When i'm on the go, which used to be always, due to college, I preffered my kit to be reeeally light, now i'm kinda changing that. I don't know how would I perform using that a heavy setup though. The only thing that I felt was a weak point, with my Rebel G, was the fact that the viewfinder isn't as bright and big as other cameras...

    • @richardhale9664

      It is not really that heavy, and it is well balanced. If you want heavy you should try my Bronica ETRS with prism finder!

    I just love my 24-70 and 70-200 L lens combo - the 24-70 lives on the body though, moving out of the L lens, I rate the pancake 40mm STM lens up there. Discrete, fast enough and sharp as a tack for the price :) I'm drooling over that ultrawide zoom though... proper lens envy!

    Personal favs:
    24-105mm f/4L. I know it’s a kit lens for some FF cameras but when I got it I was still using an 18-55mm. The 24-105 is now my go to lens.
    70-200mm f/2.8L USM (non-IS). This thing is a beast of a lens, even without IS. Under the appropriate circumstances the images are amazingly sharp. I’d only get rid of it to trade up for the IS II or III.
    85mm f/1.8. My gosh. The portraits that I pull from this thing. I’m not a pro but this thing gives me the confidence to think that I could be.

Who needs all that "....and when we go to the corners we need some noticeable lack in sharpness and colour fringing ....bla bla bla....." .. as if your colour printer is gonna start dying trying to print those areas!! Kai makes it far more direct and if you catch his drift you can pick up some good points!

    Kai, high ISO performance won't make up for the depth of field, and that rendering at 1.2 by the 50, and 1.4 by the 24mm. Plus the vignetting. Both lenses at eq. f/4 look completely different. So, it is not just about if we need loads of light or not.

      i was wondering why he didn't choose that ? may be because he can't select every L prime from 24 to 135mm and one can always crop 24mm image to arrive at 35mm f/2 equivalent on crop sensor, but one can't get a 24mm view from a 35mm. Possibly that could be the reason, even if 35 II L is the latest and 24 II L is very old. Thanks.

    I run with Canon’s 100-400 LII; 70-200 2.8 LII; 16-35 f4 L1; kit 24-105 f4 LII and the Sigma art 50 1.4. On my 5D mark IV. It all fits in my back pack with ease. Less the 100-400. I swap between it and the 70-200 depending on the activity. Along with three extra batteries, and a Speedlite 430EX III-RT with a foldable soft box. My favorite is the kit lens. It s on my camera for most of my shots.

    I just got a Canon EF 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 II and it is an absolute pleasure to shoot with. Loud as hell but that just goes well with the loud shutter on my Og 5D.
    For crop it's the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 flat, light, sharp, and fun. I will take just that and my 70D out all day shooting all kinds of stuff.
    Hands down these are my favourite lenses I own.

    To be quite honest i dont understand why you only chose canon glass, the title is 5 best lenses for canon FF cameras, not 5 best canon lenses for canon FF cameras.... Why didnt you include third party manufacturers like Sigma, Samyang, Tamron....etc , the Sigma Art lineup is often said to be better than their canon counterparts, while at the same time being cheaper, so isnt a better value for money lens better ?
