I think it is right in line with where Full Frame glass cost. You can usually expect Full Frame f2.8 or faster Pro Mirrorless glass to be about $1000 more than MFT and APS-C to be somewhere in the middle. I actually made a comment a while back when people were hating on Olympus f1.2 Pro Primes for being so heavy and expensive, that Nikon and Canon will be twice as heavy and twice the price. For me, I am waiting a couple generations from Nikon, Canon and Panasonic before I buy my first Mirriorless Full Frame. Maybe that lens will be on my list if Canon is the brand I go with.
Amateur or Pro, you can buy a lot of other kit for the price of this one lens, never mind the combo with the EOS R. So unless you're shooting fast moving subjects in the dark or require extreme DOF you'd have to have rocks in your head to buy an EOS R and this lens. A Pro would have to look at it as a business proposition: Are there jobs this gear will get me that my current gear won't, and are they worth more than the cost of said gear?
After renting this lens i can definitely say it never came off my camera (RP) and i almost cried when i sent it back 😭😭😭😭. In my opinion its the only must have lens for rf right now and the price is right. No other 50 comes close.
If image quality is your thing, this lens doesn’t have a peer. It’s a cut above the Sony GMs. And I have three of them! Shooting at 1.2 is just insane! And the bokeh is sublime.

My fav channel !! So I just purchased the new 15-35 and 28-70 RF!! I’m blown away. I sold more EF glass to cover that cost already. So I need a portrait lens for sure. Not sure I can afford both the 50RF and the 85RF if you could choose only one which one would you choose? I always seem to use these 2 focal lengths during portraits but since my new 24-70 is a F2 I can manage with the 50mm focal for now, but I’m still struggling on which to buy next 85vs50. Can you help ?
Great video... Question - how do you get around the 1/8000 max shutter speed, when shooting wide open at F1.2? In daylight my RF50mm f1.8 often clips at 1/8000!! the only solution is to increase the aperture a stop or two f2.8 f3.2 etc... But I don't want to! If I lower the ISO to 50 - it just blows out the highlights, looks yuk! (Street photography on an R6 with face/eye tracking is so easy, an amazing camera for speed/accuracy, except for the 1/8000 limit!!!). On my Fujifilm X-T3 it can shoot up to 1/32,000 - I wish canon had this feature...
I'm guessing it renders like the 35mm 1.4 L II. I don't need all my lenses to render that sharply. 50mm 1.2 L EF renders beautifully....has a vintage look to it.
I’ve used both lenses and the rf 50mm makes the ef 50mm feel old and mechanical, you really notice the vibration from the ef when it focuses that isn’t there on the RF, it’s something you have to hold and feel before you really understand.
This is ALSO an IDEAL Astrophotography lens! You're not going to find many other SUPER-SHARP F/1.2's at only $2300. The sharpest lens that was as good as this is the Zeiss Otus 55mm which is TWICE the price of the Canon! Using this lens, shoot RAW at 1 frame per minute at 1/2-second shutter speed on ISO 3200 over 6 to 10 hours on the coldest and clearest winter night you can find and you will have the most beautiful starscape time lapses in town!
@@Hubieee There are some convolution filters which can reduce that Coma since Canon has release some pretty detailed chromatic aberation and coma profiles on almost all their lenses. Interesting concept with that ring, but yes, I can see how that would be hard to get used to. The cost of these lenses, though...cost prohibitive for many, obviously.
Wish someone made a tripod ring for this beast. Also wish Canon made a battery grip for the RP that didn't need a cable to make the shutter work, but they didn't add any connectors other than for power on the battery bay...
Butch Greuel I hope you are just joking. There's a massive difference in overall sharpness. Wide open, the f/1.8 has very noticeable chromatic abberations (they tend to be green on my copy of the lens). The new f/1.2 has almost no CA (I haven't seen any so far in the online reviews I've watched) and less flare shooting into the light. It's WAY sharper at f/1.2 than the cheap lens shot at f/1.8.
Looking at all comments around internet, it seems that photographers spend all their time whining about specs, technical battle, brand battles, micro details, dynamc range at microscopic level and fighting who's the faboy of what. Is there anyone left who's actually learning how to take pictures properly?
I set the ring to exposure compensation. Very useful, but of course I can live without it no prob. I personally very looking forward to the VND adapter for the EF glass that would allow me to shoot any lens within the flash sync speed with strobes. The only thing that sucks - 1/200s could be faster, at least 1/250s like the 1dx2 or Sony cams offer.
That lens costs more than my camera but I shoot a Nikon d7500 obviously not a pro camera. Even if I did have a pro camera and it was a Nikon lens I would stick to my 50mm 1.8 but it is such a nice lens!
Rf is the way to go. And I dont really see the fuss against the Eos R. I would say it's right up there with the 5D in most regards. Other than a few small things i see no reason to label it anything other than a professional camera. Sure the next camera will get better but i wouldnt discount the quality or build of the R
What are you talking about? 50mm is my go-to for portraits. Any longer and you over flatten your subject (which can be good), and any shorter and you're potentially distorting your subject unless the focal plane is level and they aren't too close or far from the centre of the frame.
Yes that s Why this lens is so good at wide aperture. Impossible to have same quality with ef mount. The old 1.2 is great lens but at f1.2 it is far from great.
EmiTT Canon changed its mount for better body-to-lens communication with 12 contacts compared to the old 8, but the mount diameter hasn't changed. Canon's EF mount was already large. Nikon had a small mount and brought out a new much larger mount (1mm larger than the EOS R / EF mount diameter) on its Z series cameras. Because the lens sits closer to the image sensor on a mirrorless camera than on a DSLR it allows for better optical designs which produce better edge-to-edge sharpness.
telemaq76 Canon didn't increase its lens mount size! The mount itself has wider metal on the outside and 12 contact pins instead of 8, but the insider mount diameter remains unchanged from the EF mount diameter. The reason for the huge improvement in edge-to-edge sharpness is better optical design allowed by having the lens much closer to the sensor (on a mirrorless camera compared to a DSLR). The old 50 f/1.2 is optically inferior.
I only watch these videos for the sniff and wind tunnel test. It’s very important to know how my lens with do in windy conditions. Although I find it a little biased that the EF lens did t get the sniff test. Totally biased.
Hello jared. im having a hard time finding where to download the sample images. I click on the link and it takes me to another page, but I cant seem to find the download button.
Jared, I think the old one is better because the applications that you sample doesn't request a fast autofocus, so it does the job pretty well. Thanks for the good content.

Seeing this RF secondhand at €1700 online is giving me severe GAS (gear acquisition syndrome)...Debating whether to grab the EF 50 secondhand for around €700 then eventually selling it to upgrade to the RF, or just spend an unhealthy amount now haha
Sorry but this wasn't really much of a review more an opinion video with some stated facts. More a hands on than an actual review. No mention of how it is to use in video or limitations/flaws outside the obvious size/weight and lack of IS. Would have been more useful to see a comparison of the existing EF lens and compare it's focus speed and edge to edge sharpness with the new RF version.
It's the sharpest lens on the market I believe. I bought it and I don't regret it. I am not a pro, but my photos suggest otherwise, that good it is :) Only problem there is is that once you put your 50mm on, u don't like photos of rf 24-105 anymore :) That good it is :)

Best 50mm I've ever used.
RF all the way!
They saiy go mirrorless, its lighter and smaller , what they dont tell you the lenses are freaking gigantic
Great video bro!
I only watch these videos for the sniff and wind tunnel test. It’s very important to know how my lens with do in windy conditions. Although I find it a little biased that the EF lens did t get the sniff test. Totally biased.
Nice quick review..
Just a suggestion, you need to do more low/mid end camera reviews.
RF lenses are amazing and there will be new aperture / focal length combinations on the way
is it normal to have some dust in the viewfinder? I changed the lens days ago
There’s a customizable lock function so u wont accidentally mess up your settings
Please review the new Voigtlander 21mm f3.5 for Sony mount E.
Hello jared. im having a hard time finding where to download the sample images. I click on the link and it takes me to another page, but I cant seem to find the download button.
I'll buy the t-shirt he's wearing if it says 'I shoot without lens'. Everybody I know shoots raw.
Jared, I think the old one is better because the applications that you sample doesn't request a fast autofocus, so it does the job pretty well. Thanks for the good content.
The new ERA of mirrorless DSLR begins.
Filip Ivan mirrorless cameras do not have a slr
Was that a Versailles reference (Man in the Iron Mask)?
Been subscribed to your channel for over a year and watch all your vids. But this morning I woke up and you tube unsubscribed me from your channel. I resubscribed but you may want to check if this is happen to others. Keep up the great work.
To be honest, planning on getting this lens once I switch.
A better idea is to not switch to this camera.
Seeing this RF secondhand at €1700 online is giving me severe GAS (gear acquisition syndrome)...Debating whether to grab the EF 50 secondhand for around €700 then eventually selling it to upgrade to the RF, or just spend an unhealthy amount now haha
Expensive toy folks 📸😎
This smaller lens is a nifty fifty . The bigger one? Yeah Digital vinyl which one? I just wanna really nice picture.
That price difference is absurd. Just adapt it to your old 50 EF and use the extra money on a down payment for a HOUSE.
Hopefully there will be enough photographers who are willing to spend that much money for a 50mm F1.2.
I thought going mirrorless brings in lighter lens...
how about canon m50 sample photos..
Can you do a review on the Sigma SD1?
This lenses are massive, seems like they just keep getting bigger and bigger. Wonder why that is.
R for Nikon
Like to see this lens with the 50 Zeiss E-Mount.
Please take the lens hoods off!
Why? Lens hoods should be on all the time :)
Test it on eos rp please
Hi Jared. I would never attempt street photography with that behemoth!
wind tunnel test is the TRUE test. I wait for the wind tunnel before I make any decision.
Would you ever consider doing an astrophotography video
I did one.
@@froknowsphoto Oh okay I'm sorry I didn't know you made one already. I'm still waiting to make a final decision on either the 5D Mark IV or EOS R. I mainly do aviation photography(mostly commercial aircraft) weather and astrophotography so I want to make sure I know which of the 2 are best

Why would you say 50mm isn’t good for portraits? That is cray cray.
Great review ;-)
