It was one of the requirements from both Del Toro and Mignola to do the film, that Ron Perlman should be cast as Hellboy. The film even got put into hiatus until they could get him because he was busy with other works before this.

38:26 Karl Rupert Krone is a very interesting character and a unique backstory. He was the son of Watchmaker and learned from his father the mechanics of how it works. He was also a talented opera singer from an early age but lost his angelic voice after hitting puberty. He also had phobia of germs and bacteria and also suffered from a severe personality trait of perfectionism. He then went into multiple surgeries and some self surgeries which later developed into masochism. He then wore his suit and mask to filter out bacteria and germs to keep his exposed tissue from infection. People outside the comics gave him the name “The Clockman”

When he was being wheeled into the OR and I said goodbye, trying to appear calm so that he wouldn't be too scared, he told me he was worried about me, because I was alone. A father's love, worried more about me than about himself even at that moment.

Looking at the filmography Guillermo has also done Pacific Rim and a Pinocchio movie from a couple years back. From that list I've only seen Pacific Rim and that's a lot of fun, but I'd assume the Pinocchio movie is good too.

This was an awesome reaction. Your enthusiasm for the movie was so contagious I was reliving my fond memories of watching this movie as a child. The look of this movie is timeless, everything from the costume design and creature effects to the sets is so beautifully crafted. As a kid I cannot express how fascinated I was by the environments of this movie. It was dark and wet at times, but brightly lit and warm in others.
The scene where Rasputin rises from the pool of blood frightened me as a child.

Happy you two dug this film - it's such a well made and entertaining film, and the sequel is absolutely stunning - but can we please stop this "practical effects are always better" conversation. In the history of filmmaking, there are far, FAR more examples of cheesy practical effects than of bad CGI, and the only reason we even notice poor CGI is when it takes us out of the film, same as with bad practical effects. I 100% guarantee that there are films today that you think are amazing because they used practical effects that also have loads of CGI that you've never noticed because it's completely seamless. A great example of this is Fury Road, which is frequently lauded for it's practical effects - which are indeed amazing - but every single frame of the action scenes in that film use CGI in some way to enhance the images on screen.
Practical effects and CGI are just two VFX techniques - one isn't inherently better than the other, and a good director will employ both of them (within the budget).

Guillermo Del Toro is one of the best directors and visionary of all time. Period. Stop. PERIOD. I was really bummed how poorly these films did at the box office. The sets, the cinematography, the sound design, the direction, THE CAST! Hellboy is the only Darkhorse comic I’ve read and I’ll be honest I’ve read very little. There is such…. Whimsy to this that I never really expected. I’m getting overwhelmed like it’s my first time watching it seeing you two react! There are a lot of onions in here.
I hope you react to the sequel on here!! 🖤🖤

12:21-Hehe. interesting fact: Abe Sapien here is played by the same actor who played the Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water, his name is Doug Jones.
In fact, Jones and del Toro have collaborated numerous times. Jones played both the Faun and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth.

With how fantastic this movie was, it's still hard to believe that the sequel was even better. Guillermo Del Toro absolutely made magic with this franchise.
32:48 I was watching the documentary about the making of Tremors the other day, and one of the effects guys said it perfectly. "CG is like an antibiotic. You have to use it carefully, otherwise it will have no effect."
41:20 You're right! He was the lawyer in Blade 2. And when you watch Hellboy 2, you'll see another familiar face from Blade 2.

The coolest thing about the premise for this film is that this is actually based in fact. Hitler was obsessed with the paranormal and spiritual. He had teams of archaeologists all over the world trying to find powerful artifacts from legends and religion. He tried to find the arch of the covenant, the holy grail and so on. It didn’t stop with Christian artifacts as well. Anything he could find where there was an all powerful staff or a world thrashing book with magic in it. He was also into different lores. And we are talking some Ancient Alien stuff here. Sumerians and the Anonoki (Misspelled that I’m sure but phonetically you’ll get it.) He was also whipped into frenzies because the advisors for this stuff were crazier than he was. So they would talk him up and he would order it. Lots of depictions in films about this stuff. Most of Indiana Jones films are about this and Hellboy cleverly used this history to base the Hellboy world around. Super cool stories and history if you get into reading about it. The lengths this creep went to in order to gain an advantage, nuts.
