Unfortunately they have models with terrible thrust bearing design that creates crank walk. Otherwise a great platform and a great head. SRT4 is second to almost none for head flow. It's very robust and simple to make power with. Just not as much aftermarket support as Japanese stuff.
@@SillyDillysTunes the point was the 4G63 has piston the valve interference, and sorry but the 4G63 was all mitsu, not MOPAR, despite the dodge daytona and the starion/conquest, being the first joint made/imported to bypass duties and limitations ventures. the G54B that powered the starion was all mitsu as well, the 4G63 also made an appearance in japanese market starions in later years prior to the eclipse/talon/laser DSM cars. but it was the natural successor considering the success they had going NA DOHC on the G54B in racing. as for the SRT 4 , that was 4 cylinder tips and trick that MOPAR learned from the joint venture days, and the fact it was an engine once again from a multi national joint venture, only later officially recognized with the revisions on the later SRT-4's in that gawd awful caliber version.
@exiteternium 2.2l/2.5 engines were entirely cheysler engineering along with their MAP only computer system while the Starion ran a terrible MAF system. Nothing is shared with any Mitsubishi engine. @@tubesock509if you actually knew history, you'd know the Mitsubishi built engines off of engineering knowledge gained from MOPAR after partnering with them. The 4G63 platform has worse flowing heads and crank walk issues, besides a couple generations that came much later. The only reason a DSM would dust an SRT4 is because every basic bitch buys Japanese cars and they have had a huge following for decades. Which means more consumerism and more aftermarket support. I fair prefer the SRT4 architecture from an engineering stand point. Very simply and reliable with power and cheaper than a 4G63 to build to 700whp. Let's also not pretend DSM cars are turds stock and all it takes to run 12's in an SRT4 is bigger intercooler, bigger injectors and a tune. I'd know from personal experience. And they don't break.

If Rickie wants one hit me up. I'm in SoCal. It's got a p003 and p004 misfire that im guessing are the valves not being seated right. The head/intake manifold/exhaust manifold/throttle body are ported and the longblock components are rebuilt with less than 500 miles on them. Turbobay bws with same less than 500 miles on it. something went wrong with the rebuild and after chasing the gremlins im just not about it anymore. Mine has a new gates blue belt so you won't have to worry about that lol. tires also new with less than 500 miles and fresh hawk hps pads. The transmission was rebuilt by Ed Peters in 2016 and it has the forged fork and new synchros. Pick it up and make another video on it. I would love to see someone get it running well again. Edit: I changed the coil pack and put new 888cc siemens injectors trying to hunt down the misfire. It's tuned by duster360 for 91/93/e85 maps. Fuel system is a 450lph with bottleneck fix. Suspension mods are cheap Raceland coil overs lol, and complete Eibach poly bushings set and upgraded control arms. It's got a Thermal exhaust and everything is 3" from the exhaust manifold back. I also have a complete service history records since I bought the car plus a dyno sheet 350/370 93oct and 390/400 e85 when it was healthy.

I'm old enough to remember these coming out and hearing the trash talking about them. "That's not an SRT" "That shit is still slow" ect.. They always looked way more aggressive than the Neon name they came from and drove WAY better too. Apparently they were fantastic at AutoX stock back in the day and with minor suspension and brake upgrades they can hold their own during those events. Glad to see another one back in tiptop shape!
They’re good racing cars in general they do everything well , drag , auto x , circuit racing . They have a rich heritage in SCCA . People just can’t accept something small and extremely affordable does as well as it does .
@Jakim-ht7vj Dodge is one of the most hated brands. Mainly because they routinely make other auto manufacturers look bad. My uncle bought a brand new SRT4 for 18k and with basically no mods ran low 12s. Meanwhile, our buddies with full bolt on subies were grenading off the line trying to break 13 flat.
An easy bolt on would be 2.0L R/T Neon camshafts. The stock SRT4 camshafts are meant for improved emissions. The 2.0L camshafts give you more lift and duration. They allow the engine to rev over 7,000rpm. The factory turbo is also extremely small for it's displacement. The ECU is actually tuned to keep the turbo from surging because of how quickly it builds boost. It wouldn't take much of an upgrade to see serious gains.
@@MustardNketchup No, I'm in Spokane Washington and am the son of "The Pope" on the Turbo Dodge forums. My family are gurus when it comes to these cars.

Idk if it’s inexperienced or what but srt-4 almost never bend valves in a stock engine and cams when the belt snaps. Valve to valve is highly unlikely to happen when the belt snaps all the cams do is stop in place the spring tension is usually high enough to not rotate further and do any damage. The guy claiming he’s seen and bent 10v prior I promise was on an engine w cams.
I recently snapped my belt in traffic on my srt4 and didn't know it snapped. So I cranked it again for like 2 seconds after the belt snapped. You think it did any damage?
@@christopherlister8932 I hope so. Well after that, I did an oil change and found alot of metal shavings. Which is odd cause I did a compression test. And it was straight numbers across the board. My friend also told me to do a leakdown test on the valves by putting a cap of oil on top of the pistons. Which in turn that also did show straight numbers across the board. So idk what it could be. The car does burn alot of oil. I have to change the oil twice as often, (oil gets dark faster) and runs super rich. At w.o.t. it smokes..in boost I plummet black smoke out the exhaust indicating high fuel mixture. And after I let off it turns to whiteish/gray. Which would also indicate burning oil. Idk what else could be damaged
I was putting motors in these back in 06/07 when the big turbo kits were getting more popular and less expensive. People decided that a 62mm turbo and 22psi was ok on stock blocks... NOT. In many cases the cylinder heads were torched too. When you mentioned how much boost it was running I foreshadowed something like this. But hoped it wouldn't. Build the motor!!!
@@24_7Cornhole That's respectable. But dudes abusing a motor on larger than average turbos is still common to this day in sfl... It can make 550hp, but not for long.
I feel like this is a missed opportunity, unless maybe there is more planned? There is a ton of aftermarket support for these, I am sure there are a few vendors willing to work with you.
I had a 2g with the 420a, the timing belt cover broke and pieces of it caused the timing belt to break. Luckily all the valves were in the up position, had the car towed to a shop. The mechanic there didn't want to touch it until I tried to start it, once he heard everything was ok he replaced the belt and I was on my way. Unfortunately someone hit the car while it was parked and totaled it, a few years later. The 420a may not be a great engine but if you don't abuse it, it will last. My 2g had over 240k on it and still ran strong.
You know they know..if you got the Homie welded cam gear tool. I still have mine and the spring compressor tool. When you don't want to pull head to change cam springs. We had a huge neon crew. Srt will go 450 before you just are dumping money..but that was when they first came out.
I think what saved the head from being trashed is being lower compression. The base neon 2.0 is a high compression. 9.8:1. And the SRT's came at 8.8:1 for boost
I had one of these when I was younger and they can make a lot of power with just a few upgrades. Maybe this was the world telling you to build this motor a little bit
Congrats on your luck. Hmmm It is time for fun mods. Up pipe, down pipe, turbo back exhaust, cams, intake, ported gasket matched intake, P&P Head possibly bigger valves, cams, and ECU upgrade. Next bigger turbo if possible?

@@gavinstarke1184 They didn't mess up with synchro's. Most street cars have weak gearing. Swap them out with course cut gears like anyone else that races seriously.

Different engine. Different block and head. That's also an interference engine as the piston has higher compression and thus the crown close to the valves. SRT looks killer fellas nice work ! The regular neon 2.0 has an interference motor , maybe that’s what Ricky was referring to . The 2.4 turbo in the SRT has always been non interference. I’ll be honest the title is clickbait 😂I was thinking a rod went through the motor from a hotdog session . Great to know it was something relatively simple . She looks great and sounds rowdy!
It's interference valve to valve, not piston the valve, so you can bend them still, but it's not as common as say the 4g63..
@@exiteternium Mistsubishi was given a ton of tips and tricks to building a 4 banger turbo as they built the most potent and advanced systems in the 80s. A lot of people believe it's the other way around because they are JDM fanboys. 4G63 is derived from MOPAR knowledge.
The only thing that came later on the 8 valves that was apart of the partnership was the terrible Mitsubishi turbos that's are far inferior to the older Garrett's the 8 valves came with.
The Evo X engine has proven itself to be a good platform and is the WORLD engine. Which was a true joint effort across multiple companies. It has zero shared parts with the Chrysler 2.4l SRT4 engine. Maybe you should get your facts straight before arguing. You're clearly bias being a Mitsu fanboy. I like Mitsubishi, but to act like they didn't sit on the shoulders of the Chrysler engineering giant is hilarious.
@@SillyDillysTunes G54B is 2.6L, 4G63 is 2.0... i owned both a talon and a Conquest, Chrysler had plenty of their own bespoke things, like the 440, the Hemi, the 2.2liter is not bespoke to chrysler, even chevrolet ran 2.2L turbo cars in the Sunbird.
although the turbo Lebaron was chrysler, they also used a G54B in those from mitsu too.
the 2.4L in the SRT4 is based off the 4G64 2.4 liter from MITSU whether you want to admit it or not isn't my problem, anyone that's wrenched SRT4, and the mitsu powered stratus will say the same thing. oh and FYI, i owned an SRT4 too.
But since your swinging off mopar's nuts, i bet you think the 1st gen SHO, was ford giving tips and trick to Yamaha.
and if mitsu turbo's where so bad, they wouldn't be the OEM maker for so many cars including BMW, and Mercedes.
These cars are so cool! I can’t be the only one who wants to see a full build.
I had one of this when they first came out with a stage 2 from moose and that thing was a beast. I think that might have a stage 3 on it. New turbo and new ecu. But these 2 videos just rekindled my love for these. Awesome job guys
Should have done the water pump with it too. Neons are notorious for water pumps failing!
The 2.4 l is not a standard neon motor. It was in the SRT4 only

@@chriscatt8771 even still, a while your in there approach is best nothing like having a new belt ruined cause it got saturated with coolant.
@@chriscatt8771 yeah, sorta...not really. Yes, the turbo blocks were different from the NA blocks, but the water pump part is exactly the same. It's still a 2.4 and it sill has the same issues. I like them, but stop trying to make it out to be something it's not.
@@AetheriusAri There are differences between the turbo and non-turbo blocks, but that isn't in the water pump area.
I bought a brand new flame red one in 2005 with 25 miles and added a stage two kit straight from the dealership the first week I had it. Was FBO within a year. Kept it for 80k miles. Added a 50 shot the last couple years I had it. Put it through hell and back literally daily. 100s of track days and trips to Mexico. Endless amount of amazing memories with that car. Sold it with the original clutch still in it with zero issues. Was an amazingly tough car. These cars handled a crazy amount of abuse and always left you smiling after every pull.
Damn, I had a 04 Neon srt4 (eblue) fully built in Hawaii. Big turbo helped me get to 500hp. It was the fastest neon and n the island. I sold that baby to an army guy and he crashed it the first week of owning it. Last I heard it was sitting in the jungle out there rotting away. BBS wheel and Cf hood and trunk with aftermarket head lights and tail lights and lowered in BC Coilovers. That thing ripped. I had just put a brand new tial BOV on the damn thing before I sold it. I wish I could get another neon. Tough cars to work on at times but loads of fun! Good luck guys.
You sure it wasn't Guam ? I was just out there for Typhoon mawar a couple years ago and saw one same color same hood rotting in the jungle 😂

that was a blast to watch love the way you guys break it down and have fun with it. these have a special place in my heart i love seeing new content with them. very under appreciated car, hope you guys keep making videos with it!
These are very reliable cars when taken care of . People hate on them because they’re jealous usually is what I’ve heard talked about , they won’t admit it . But I’ve caught people admiring how good it sounded and how quick it was for a compact . I’d have to totally agree
I hated them, then I went for a ride in one. Then I bought one that had been in a ditch before, then I bought an absolutely mint one.
@ I’ve heard that sorry soooo many times of the hate , only to turn around and people own them lol . People just don’t really like what’s different . This is why I like turbo dodges they’ve always been pioneers of the game . The heritage goes deep , but too many people only watch fast and the furious so it’s no wonder they’re uneducated lol
In the dsm community we roast these cars 🤷♂️

Very very rare for valve to vale contact. I've done several timing belts on these 2.4s after busting. Just slap a new one on and go.

I used to have a Neon, but not a SRT4. I have a Chrysler 200 and purchased a K&N air intake from your website for install 🙂

When my cam belt snapped....it was a couple valves later and then the dude that did the job put the cams the wrong way around....another 4 bent valves later, myself and uncle (mechanic) pulled the head and did the job ourselves. Why did you not change the belt as part of the maintenance 👍🇬🇧👍🇬🇧

@@XBLWaur well if its stock cams highly doubt it
@@christopherlister8932 it is stock cams yeah. All internals stock
@@XBLWaur its fine then
@@christopherlister8932 I hope so.
I would love to have that car. I used to have an 02’ Neon SXT.

Has a precision 5431 on a 100% stock motor for almost 2 years at around 430hp/410tq. Never had one single issue. 26-27psi daily driven and abused.
@@24_7Cornhole That's respectable. But dudes abusing a motor on larger than average turbos is still common to this day in sfl... It can make 550hp, but not for long.
Yes finally a car I actually wanna watch . Sick of all these 2jz and boring rwd cars
420A is an older generation engine but still a great platform. SCCA dominated its class over every other brand with their Stratus that made 350hp NA.
Always make the best content! Keep it up God bless you guys.

This was my favorite car so many years ago. Great work. I'd buy it.
I think what saved the head from being trashed is being lower compression. The base neon 2.0 is a high compression. 9.8:1. And the SRT's came at 8.8:1 for boost
17:10 gotta call your guy to replace that headliner lol

awesome i love them i have had 3 in 15 years for i sold my last one a year ago because im a bigger guy now and the 4 door pillar makes it so uncomfortable to drive for me now my daily is a gr86. the srt4 is the best sounding 4 cyl ever made by far you probably already know but the 3rd gear and even tightness to get into any gear is a problem with the clutch fork and very common dont let that be a reason to not buy it around 100k your going to have to replace the clutch fork in any srt4 and mine as well do the clutch as well

Different engine. Different block and head. That's also an interference engine as the piston has higher compression and thus the crown close to the valves. It probably needed a PCV changed a while ago and you built up crank case pressure and blew out a gasket. Maintenance is key to taking care of an engine.
