Rotaries are my absolute favorite engine, but it was only today that I realized the apex seals are the equivalent of rod bearings for piston engines with your explanation of how they work. Super interesting; I'd love more in-depth explanations!
@@yarukineez0 Glad you‘ve enjoyed the video!🙏 However Apex seals along your corner - and side seals act more as a piston ring equivalent. They seal off the combustion chamber creating compression. The equivalent to rod bearings in a rotary engine would be the rotor bearings as they rotate around the E-Shaft (Crank shaft) ✌️
I’ve owned 2 rx8s, series 1 and 2, best cars ive driven, its not always about power, its the confidence it gives you to attack the corners, forget the power upgrades, focus on handling, i had 10x more fun driving rx8s than my boosted cars, yes rotaries needs more love than other engines but it wont let you down in the track like others.
Well said! I think with these cars it`s not about the power tho. It`s like you said about the cornering ability, the confidence it gives you and the perfect 50:50 weight distribution. :)
Greetings from Germany. I also had an RX-8 years ago. When I asked, the starter was also replaced with a faster rotating one. Nevertheless, the RX-8 sank a total of 3 times. The problem is that you can't turn it on briefly and then turn it off again immediately. So reparking for a short time is not a good idea.
After having every person in my family flood my 8 by moving it 10 ft and cutting it off a tech at my Mazda dealership informed me u can rev to 3-4k as u shut it off and it will prevent it from flooding.. made a huge difference. Apparently this also does something with keeping the apex seals in outward position for better seal/compression when cranking (I'm honestly not sure about this, but it's how it was explained to me) the de flooding procedure he mentioned in the video is to push accelerator to the floor which cuts fuel so u can turn engine over and burn out any extra fuel
@@jacobwhicker8423 That actually never worked for me... Neither on my RX-7 nor the RX-8. About the Apex seals: Idk but from a technical perspective this doesn`t really make much sense since the Apex seals are pressed against the housing with much force by the 2 Apex seal springs anyways. So I think for the seals it doesn`t make much sense to rev the engine before shutting it off. For preventing flooding it makes sense though! :)
@@moritzherr I'm assuming u meant revving before shutting it off never worked or are u saying cranking with the accelerator down hasn't? The de-flooding procedure never worked for me tbh.. my car flooded a couple times just from turning it off when it hadnt quite reached normal operating temp like a short drive on a cold morning, but never again after I started shutting it off with the engine revved.. not sure if it would still work in extreme situations like if u shut it off after only a few seconds on a cold morning And no clue about the apex seals thing.. prolly bs, but tbh it's not even the most absurd nonsense I've heard someone say about how rotaries supposedly work lol not sure how ppl come up with some of the stuff they claim about these engines
@@jacobwhicker8423 Oh yeah sorry, I meant revving before shutting it off to prevent the flooding😂 For some reason that never made a difference for me but I would count myself lucky anyways since I never have any problems with flooding the RX-7 or RX-8 even if I just turn them on and off again before they warmed up. The only time I‘ve experienced flooding is when firing it up for the first time after a rebuild. But that was mostly personal error, not the cars fault xD I gotta agree there is so much misinformation about rotaries out there, it makes me sick sometimes. Because from what I‘ve seen and experienced it’s rarely the car‘s fault or to blame on the rotary as such. Most of the time the biggest problem is the person behind the wheel not knowing anything about the rotary and them later blaming the car for it😅
All I have to say is Wunderbar! Used to own an 86 GXL and absolutely loved that vehicle. It was beaten on heavily by its previous owners, but nearly 200k on that engine…near perfect compression! This video makes me think about before owing that vehicle, I helped a friend who was an rx7 enthusiast to remove his engine from his T2. I’ll never forget when he said we are going to lift the engine out by hand…I was totally lost at the suggestion of that. He showed me the engine he needed help lifting and he grabbed one side, I grabbed the other, then we lifted it out by hand and we carried it to the work bench in the garage. Heavy as all hell, but was still capable of being hand carried. I couldn’t believe something so small could make so much power (200hp or so stock in those days was a lot of power!). It all went from there and I fell down the rotary hole. Thanks for this awesome video, one of the absolute best I’ve seen in a long time! Also wanted to add in, not sure if you’re familiar with it but look into ceramic sealant and coolant seals method. Essentially, if coolant seals are bad, they can be saved by using ceramic sealant and it’ll fix the seal that’s giving the issues. I thought it was crazy but I fixed a 13b with this method and it held for thousands and thousands of miles, the car was running perfect the last I heard.
Engine gets higher compression when running at a higher RPM due to less blowby on the seals. One RPM is only 1/3 rotation of the rotors so a higher cranking speed will have a huge impact. A higher cranking starter is a very common mod. great video
I love rotaries a lot, I'm not sure if you remember my last comment but I ended up finding a hobbyist like you but in my area and he said next time he ends up rebuilding a friend / customers rotary that I can come over and help and watch with the build, I'm super excited. Rotaries are honestly a lot more simple than piston engines at least when it comes to raw moving parts. I think the reason why so many people are scared of rotary cars is very few skills translate over to rotaries if you've been working on piston engines for your entire life. You could build 1000+ piston engines inline 4, inline 6, v6, boxer, etc. Building a rotary is an entire other world. It must be hard to get after market parts over there in Europe, its hard over here even in the USA. Japan is very spoiled mazda is still making a lot of OEM parts from rotaries over there.

Also I’ve only put 20k miles in those 8 years 😅
Nice. Fresh rotaries are usually pretty hard to start. Next time give it a tow behind a car, bump start it to get it spinning nice and fast. Should start right up without killing the starter and battery.. but good job on it anyways!
@@mrshaneyt43 That’s awesome! Do you mean Rotax or Rotary? Because Rotax is a company producing piston engines😄 From what I know, there have been rotary bikes aswell back then from Suzuki!
@@moritzherr me showing my early morning ignorance 🤣it was a rotax . Still your video was so interesting and great to actually see inside the engine. Amazing work 👍
Sehr geiles Video💪 I want to buy a RX8 in the future so I´m scraping all informations from the internet togehter to be prepared. Maybe you can do some vids about correct disassembling and assembling of the rotary. Or "how to make a rotary more reliable" thinks like that. Weiter so
I would advise getting a front undertray back on it ASAP. Without it, you won't get proper airflow through the radiator while driving, as the air just goes under the car without the undertray to guide it.
The "de flooding" procedure honestly never worked for me.. I found the best option was to just push start it to quickly burn off the fuel.. also I assume it was done to this car, but I remember mine always having a tough time starting until they did a recall on the starter which made a world if difference.. 04 rx8 drive it from 25k to 130k miles honestly without any issues till a tree fell on it in my driveway 😢
This is the first I have ever seen this 2 stroke contraption. I used to be a Mazda Master tech, and I was always burdened with the rotary. Usually, it was the ram air pump causing problems, or vehicles unable to start after standing for a long time. Most of the time, we managed to get it started by just towing it. Fun fact. In the manual, it states that before switching the vehicle off, you should rev the vehicle up to 3000 rpm. This will keep the apex seals kicked out and prevent low compression. Also, when you have worked on the engine, you can prime the oil by pressing the brake, "speaking from vague memory," 20 times within 5 seconds. (I usually just switched the ignition on, pressed, and released the brakes as fast as possible until the oil light started flashing. Also note it has 4 spark plugs, 2x trailing, and 2x leading. Used to get people doing their own services and messing it up.
2:34 Aaaah. So the previous owner sold it with an OMP delete/Sohn adaptor and didn't let the buyer know how to operate it. Or expected them to know... guys. Just let newbies know the pain they are going into ffs!
@@AJZulu From what the owner told me, the seller let him know about how to operate the adaptor and that he needs to check the oil level regularly. However the current owner simply forgot to do so because he didn’t know how important it was😅
@@indianmarshmello. In case of RX-8‘s a OMP delete actually means that you have to install a sohn adaptor… Otherwise the car won’t run because the ECU will throw a code. You can get an RX-8 to run without an OMP aswell, however this involves re-coding the ECU to prevent it from throwing a fault code :) Up until RX-7 FC S4‘s it is pretty easy to delete the OMP as they are mechanically actuated. Although since the FC S5 model they have moves to electrically actuated OMP‘s which means IF you do an OMP delete, you will either NEED a Sohn adaptor OR coding✌️
@@moritzherr Is an a sohn adaptor not just a plate that sandwhiches inbetween the OMP and the oilpan to feed 2 stroke oil rather than oilpan oil? which means you have to have your OMP for it to make any sense.
Rx8 engine are not crazy complicated. Once you get into it you'll be hooked in no time 😀. Still my favorite handling car I've ever driven. Make sure OMP sensor, and omp lines get changed out of leaking or cleaned. Also i have bought 2 if these that Noone could fix and the MAF sensor was dirty, if it's barely dirty it'll run like ass and bog hard. I miss mine i have a Fiesta ST right now we just put a mountune full head on. Next is bigger turbo!
In defense of the other guys, at face value an rx8 that's been "run without oil" to rotary owners means that engine could be a lot worse and a major gamble. Still though, it's always a bit of a gamble and you came out lucky with this having so many reusable parts! Good stuff man ❤
@@DOProductionsNL Exactly! It was very lucky😅 That’s why I told him I would rip out and disassemble the engine for free, just to see if anything is saveable🙏
5:00 no, i cannot agree. It STILL IS lubricated with the stock oil injectors and motor oil that is put in the oil pan, unless it's been modified and they were deleted, which i dont see they were. It is not only lubricated by the 2t oil in that reservouir, in fact, it's the first time i have seen one in rx8.
@@XStuntManiac Bro it’s NOT lubricated by engine oil because the OMP is literally BYPASSED!!😂 The OMP usually sucks up engine oil to lubricate, yes I agree… But the whole point of the adaptor I was talking about is to PREVENT the OMP from sucking up engine oil! It does this by bypassing the OMP pickup, replacing it with the 2t oil feed. So no… It was not libricated…
@@flibbertigibbet6200 Leaving it stock is basically just as bad for the engine in the long run because of excessive carbon buildup due to the injection of engine oil (which does not burn cleanly and is not even designed to be burnt). That’s the biggest design flaw of the Mazda Rotary…
11:07 I'm not a mechanic, but is it possible that pin on the spark plug broke off and rattled around the engine causing the wear on the engine housing?
@@dillpickle7633 Yess good catch! That’s actually exactly what happened. I analyted the marks in the housing and they line up with this theory pretty well😅
That is the weakness of a rotary engine. The combustion has direct contact with the lubrication in the combustion chambers... Similar damage occurs in a two stroke engine without a proper mixture.... interesting video, I still wouldn't want a notary engine.
I'd like to point out that two stroke oil system is not a stock part of the RX8. That's an aftermarket mod to bypass the factory system that usually used to drip regular engine oil into the housings. The video makes it sound like it's a regular part of the engine which is misleading

I have owned many rx8s. I only found one with a bad motor and two with bad transmissions. I usually go to rockauto and always install new ngk coils and new ngk plugs and wires. And premix no matter what. And always use premium fuel. They just need to be driven hard.
Great video style, like the pacing and editing. Also good work on that wankel engine, understandable that you wanted to cut costs, but with all the work put into it one could argue that brand new parts would have been reasonable. Also a before and after compression test would've been interesting. Only thing I would do differently is to replace cheap stuff like spark plugs right away when rebuild something. Would love to have a RX-8 myself but its definitely not the most reasonable car to own 😂
Thank you mate! Glad you`ve enjoyed it :) About the spark plugs: Usually when rebuilding a rotary it is advised to start it with the old plugs first as they are guaranteed to foul anyways due to all the assembly lube and vaseline in the combustion chamber. And since you don`t wann fould the new plugs you crank the car with the old ones and try to fire it up first, then switch over to the new plugs :)
Should I also get myself one of these?😂 Let me know what you think!

Just spark plug changes and always topping off my oil every other tank of gas and got a regular oil change every 3k miles or whenever I felt like it’s been too long. Also I’ve only put 20k miles in those 8 years 😅
Nice. Fresh rotaries are usually pretty hard to start. Next time give it a tow behind a car, bump start it to get it spinning nice and fast. Should start right up without killing the starter and battery.. but good job on it anyways!
loved this video btw. Rx-7 video when??
@YLBatman Thanks man!✌️ Still working on the Turbo swap but there is not much work left! :)

@@mrshaneyt43 That’s awesome! Do you mean Rotax or Rotary? Because Rotax is a company producing piston engines😄 From what I know, there have been rotary bikes aswell back then from Suzuki!

Sehr geiles Video💪 I want to buy a RX8 in the future so I´m scraping all informations from the internet togehter to be prepared. Maybe you can do some vids about correct disassembling and assembling of the rotary. Or "how to make a rotary more reliable" thinks like that. Weiter so
buy the z5 part number side seals, they come super close to the right length , you only have to touch them up just a tad.

Bought a new 2004 RX-8 in 2003, incredible driver's car. Raced it, tracked it, amazing car.
just got myself my 2. rx8 but luckly with under 6k km and amazing looking engine bay . just like "brand New"
What a lucky find! Have much fun with it mate!😁

However the current owner simply forgot to do so because he didn’t know how important it was😅
OMP delete != Sohn Adapter
@@indianmarshmello. In case of RX-8‘s a OMP delete actually means that you have to install a sohn adaptor… Otherwise the car won’t run because the ECU will throw a code.
You can get an RX-8 to run without an OMP aswell, however this involves re-coding the ECU to prevent it from throwing a fault code :)
Up until RX-7 FC S4‘s it is pretty easy to delete the OMP as they are mechanically actuated.
@@moritzherr I have a sohn adaptor on my rx8 that I installed.
Subbed! You made it look easy lol
@@DjPrimeberry Gald you enjoyed it!🙏 It is actually a farely easy job :) It’s a lot of work for sure but thankfully not super complicated👍🏻
Loved the video, I toyed with getting a rx8 and bought a vr4 instead🤣 probably a worse decision
@moritzherr Maybe he should have left it alone and stock and that wouldn't of happened?
I really want one of these (no money to buy one ) there really cool but it's defo a 2nd car it couldn't be a primary car, new sub
@@Breene17 Thanks mate!🙏 Totally agree, it would be more of a weekend car
I'd like to point out that two stroke oil system is not a stock part of the RX8. That's an aftermarket mod to bypass the factory system that usually used to drip regular engine oil into the housings. The video makes it sound like it's a regular part of the engine which is misleading

Epic resurrection of a dead rotary tech engine!! Great video!!
@@MarkHyde Thanks mate!🙏
I have owned many rx8s. I only found one with a bad motor and two with bad transmissions. I usually go to rockauto and always install new ngk coils and new ngk plugs and wires. And premix no matter what. And always use premium fuel. They just need to be driven hard.
Not the trail of oil coming from the ..front ? Of the Porsche 😂
I don`t even know why the hell it`s coming form the front!!😂
Great video style, like the pacing and editing. Also good work on that wankel engine, understandable that you wanted to cut costs, but with all the work put into it one could argue that brand new parts would have been reasonable. Also a before and after compression test would've been interesting. Only thing I would do differently is to replace cheap stuff like spark plugs right away when rebuild something.
Would love to have a RX-8 myself but its definitely not the most reasonable car to own 😂
Thank you mate! Glad you`ve enjoyed it :)
About the spark plugs: Usually when rebuilding a rotary it is advised to start it with the old plugs first as they are guaranteed to foul anyways due to all the assembly lube and vaseline in the combustion chamber. And since you don`t wann fould the new plugs you crank the car with the old ones and try to fire it up first, then switch over to the new plugs :)
@moritzherr okay, that makes sense :)
I had an rx8 a few years ago. It was amazing....until i took it to mazda for a service. It was, sadly, never the same again. I sold it.
You could only pay me to own a rotary engine car...great vid. SUB'd!!!
