    As a side note: ancient Athens did not have tv but but they had plenty of demagogues. So they used to say the phrase "democracy requires virtue and courage" (meaning it's pointless if the people dont support it). They also needed measures to force people to care about politics. The word idiot in greek literally means "he who cares only for his personal afairs" and it's negative connotation survives to this day.

    • @inventgineer
      @inventgineer Год назад +61

      I just looked this up elsewhere online to confirm (not being the kind of rube or dolt, or......idiot 😉 that does not do his duty properly to others, in this case in terms of independently verifying info before passing it along)....and man, lmao, THANK YOU internet friend.
      I had absolutely no idea that was its origin, but that fills my heart with a MASSIVE smile, because as someone of Italian-American ancestry? The only thing other than fire than runs through my veins is DUTY. So, most definitely (excuse my crudeness): f*ck all the idiots (aka savages aka barbarians) that are too dumb or weak to have the strength for anyone but themselves, lol. If one can't fathom a purpose and design larger than just one's self or one's family, then one isn't of much more worth than any other dumb farm animal.
      Complex life didn't arise because every cell just fought only for itself, and, indeed, what we refer to as "cancer"?.....is literally basically just a very broadstrokes term for "whenever a cluster of cells starts going retarded and fighting only for themselves, no matter the harm to the rest of the body". And that's what people who don't believe in democracy are: just uncivilized cancer, threatening the wellbeing of the whole just to suit their own passing interests.

    • @inventgineer
      @inventgineer Год назад +24

      Also, somewhat related: "retarded" comes from Italian and it literally just means "slow" -not even necessarily having to do with thinking, per say. So basically when everyone's SOOOOO upset and in arms about people using the words "retard" or "retarded"?.....All they're literally doing is teasing someone for being somewhat slower mentally than others. And, craaaazy fact about reality: some people DO think faster or slower than others, lol. Everyone's SO offended by the use of that particular word, but......kids still call each stupid in a million other ways (stupid, idiot, smoothbrain, moron, shortbus, etc), and curiously enough: you'll find no self-righteous outrage over all those 😆.
      This horrible trend of self-righteous moralizing in society is so extremely toxic -such a race to the bottom of who can be the most smug, self-important, and unyielding in their ideology.

      I think people care. People are voting on both sides.
      The problem is people, primarily some White Americans and some Latinos who identify as white, are also fervently voting for Trump, MAGA candidates, white nationalism, less democracy and freedom of choice to live the life you want.
      Why they are supporting these concepts I still don't know. It doesn't and won't benefit them in the coming years. Instead, it's going to backfire on them badly.
      They seem afraid of change and people who don't look, act, think, dress or pray like them. Many of these people are middle age and older, not wordly, and appear really unhappy and downright miserable with their personal lives for reasons that have nothing to do with politics or other individuals. However, instead of realizing the cause of their unhappiness is due to themselves, it's easier for them to scapegoat minorities, women, lgbt, Democrats Biden.
      For example does Trump look happy to you? For all his money, degrees, children, attractive wives and mistresses, he seems like a miserable and unhappy person and it seems like he's been that way most of his life.

    I'm no republican. Not even close. I live in Canada and here (where the Democratic party would basically count as extreme neocons wrapped in a rainbow flag) I'm typically on the left of every debate I get into.
    Still, I'm just amazed at how US liberals seem just incapable of self-criticism and reflection.
    Look at this outrage and hysteria over the idea that some people are contesting the election results. As if that was unheard of recklessness.
    I started following US politics in the early 2000's and since then, people, even people with large platforms and authority, who will promote the idea that an election was stolen or that the results are illegitimate has been on repeat.
    Democrats tried to get the vote changed alleging irregularities in 2000 when Bush won. Republicans spent Obama's presidency bullshitting about where he'd been born and whether he was even legitimately American. Then the Hilary Clinton campaign and all of its media support literally spent the entire Trump presidency alleging that he was compromised to a foreign power, with Clinton and a bunch of high level democrats EXPLICITLY stating publicly that he was not a legitimate president, and literally tried to remove him from office using impeachment.
    How is any of this new or singular to current Republicans? Rejecting the legitimacy of election results is just par for the course for anyone who has long term memory.
    And why isn't anyone interested in why there are so many people willing to vote for the complete moron that Trump is? Don't you think that chalking all of them up to stupid racist bigots is a bit simplistic? Instead of hysterically painting your political opposition as people who are just about to destroy all that's fair and decent in the world, why don't you work on making the Democratic party into something actually worth voting for on its own. That is, not just under the explicit blackmail that doing otherwise means Nazi hell.
    The reason people desert the Democrats isn't that everyone's just turned fascist all of a sudden. It's that the Democrats are viewed (and huh, rightfully so) as just as corrupt and full of shit. And until integrity is restored in that party, and they run on an actually genuine platform with real bold progressive change to give people hope in a better future, voters are going to keep not caring. The Democratic party has been acting as if people in it just feel entitled to votes. People should just be shamed into voting for them even though once they're in power they'll do nothing serious to lower drug prices, get people universal healthcare, close tax evasion loopholes, stop big money's influence in politics, stop private for profit prison labor, stop the stupid war on drug, stop domestic surveillance, reduce the influence on foreign policy of the military industrial complex, stop the outsourcing of American working class jobs, help unions regain some power, and on and on and on.
    The Democratic party is just straight up doing nothing for left causes. But it cares a whole lot about transgenders and BLM. Congrats. Systemic racism and LGBT rights are serious issues. But if all you're gonna do is hit people over the head with that stuff and tell them they're fascist who can go f* themselves if they don't accept all your ideological edicts, you're gonna keep losing. Because guess what. Working and middle class people who didn't go to 2010+ colleges, most of them, they're not into that stuff, and they have other preoccupations. Simple as that. If you won't address their actual grievances and tell them that they're no longer welcome if the don't support you on issues they don't care about, what do you expect will happen.

      Who really knows if these elections are accurate? How could any one person possibly know for sure, unless that one person personally talked to every voter to confirm what their vote was? An impossible task. I think it's legitimately suspicious that a computerized, SECURE website isn't used to tally the votes. Banks have been using secure websites for years now. If these websites weren't secure, the world's greatest hackers would have successfully hacked in, and electronically stolen everyone's money by now. That same system the banks use to keep track of customer transactions could also be used to keep track of every voter's vote. You could vote from home over the internet the same way you make transactions at your bank. Anyone too poor to have internet service could go to their local library to vote on their computers. After voting, the system would send you an e-mail to confirm your votes. Just the way banks do now when you make a transaction. You would also get more voter participation from that kind of system, since that makes voting easier. The fact that those who control the system, HAVEN'T switched to that kind of system, tells me that CORRUPT people are benefiting from the current antiquated system. So they keep that BETTER SYSTEM from happening.

      People at the left end of the political spectrum could loot, maim, murder, commit arson or make the president to retreat to a bunker, with no real consequences or outrage.
      Democrats could openly call to arms, deny elections and be as divisive as they wanted, and no one cared.
      Houses of Supreme Court justices with the "wrong" opinion could illegally be besieged with nobody shutting it down or locking those people up.
      (But hey, at least they stopped that one guy from murdering a justice, however there was no outrage over it)
      Oh right, and the president of the "good" party could be evidently corrupt (among other things), but suddenly that's okay... or has to be hidden away and the people gaslight over it.
      The current state of law and media coverage is already extremely partisan.

      Not enough for us to keep Congress. That will have real, genuine ramifications. No more Democrat bills will pass until at least the next Presidential election, and if the Republicans win the White House? Then it could be said no Democrat bills will pass for the foreseeable future.
      By "Democrat bills" I mean those bills which do not have any Republican support, and if you have been paying attention, that would be 99% of all bills put forward by Democrats. Basically, I think Bill is afraid that Democrats are simply unwilling or unprepared to defend against the kind of hardball tactics Republicans are fully willing to employ in their desire for victory.
      Republicans will commit illegal and immoral acts to achieve victory, things Democrats will not rightly mimic. So, in some ways, the battle for Democrats has already been lost---because we are unwilling to break the Rule of Law, in order to save the Rule of Law. Republicans have shown they have no respect for such ideals and would simply prefer they be the only party in power.
      I ask you how in God's name we can possibly defend against that without becoming them in the process?

They had lots of land that they farmed with primitive methods (more cows plowing than tractors and more donkeys irrigating than water-pumps)...it was pre-globalization and pre-war era, so farmers were not rich..had to labor and were extremely busy year around. A couple of decades of war and disruption of life later, the next generation didn't know how to farm, how to labor hard, how to be content. The one thing they got going for them was sky-rocketing real-estate prices (thanks to oodles of cash infusion by US) and inherited land from their poor farmer parents. So, they started selling these lands to the businesses and the wealthy..one piece at a time and lived lavishly. For some, it lasted 10 years. For others, 20. But it finally ran out. Prices crashed and they didn't have much to sell. What was worse though is that their kids, having been raised by bunch of dead-beat brats, are completely lost. Fearful, cowardly and completely at a loss towards life itself. Yeah, somewhat like America. So far removed from founding fathers and that it is impossible to reconnect the dots.

Please show me the examples of 150+ candidates from one party running for the positions of power that allow them to directly oversee vote counting whom ALL believe that elections & votes aren’t valid unless they win.
      Have people denied elections before? Of course. This is different. It has never, not once in our history, been this focused on the sole issue of gaining control of how votes are counted, all because one party lost a totally fair, secure election.
