fundamentalism combined with terrorism isn't specifically limited to islam, as we're waking up to find right here in america. we ignore that at our peril.
Seriously? Seriously? So which middle eastern country should you bomb this time ? An iranian dude does an assasination attempt. And Bill Maher is out there to discuss "We should condemn bad ideas of islam". I have read salman rushdie book a decade back, and I found it average. And I am sure millions and millions of muslims have read it too. If one guy with a muslim name is good enough to spark a debate about muslim extremism, what about me, should it start a debate about muslim tolerance ? It is the definition of strawman argument. I mean if after every white supremacist attack, media comes and starts discussing " well we know all white guys aren't terrorists, but what is wrong with white genes ? I mean I and hundreds of millions of muslims like me who consider themselves to be devoted muslims and don't consider about killing people for their views, our islam isn't somehow islam ???? Only the islam of extremists represents TRUE islam??? My islam is deviant islam??? Yes, I get really offended when someone deliberately degrades my religious figures. Yes, I think homosexuality, fornication and adultery is a sin. But would I resort to violence??? A big no, just less than one percent of muslims actually resorts to violence, BUT their islam somehow represents ISLAM, and the ISLAM of 99% is not true islam. Well, i guess Jew bill maher and Jew sam harris somehow understand true islam, and I have been fooled by my teachers and parents my whole life. Question the commitment to non-violence of millions of american muslims by actions of one lunatic is bigotry, I dare bill maher to debate on crime in black communities, or high frequency of high profile jewish sex offenders in me too movement. Would he ? Because you just can't judge 99% for action of 1%. But somehow for muslims, few lunatics going buck wild every year, automatically makes whole religion as complicit. And I know exactly why, Every decade US elite gets horny for some muslim lives in middle east, be it iraq, libya, syria, or palastine, and the shepherds need to portray muslim as "The barbarians" to the herd so that their blood sells cheap. Bill maher and his ilk is despicable. So are you. I mean, you are finally getting " white male toxicity" kinda bullshit now too. You media is just making your brain rot more intense. And keep you ready to support next invasion for democratic values in middle east. Fcuking noobs, no wonder your civilization has degenerated beyond repair. You are good sheep.
The definition of Strawman fallacy as displayed by Bill at here is very much ambiguous. It had originated from strawmans being used by farmers in old days which were confusing the birds for actual humans to keep them away.. Same happens in a strawman argument wherein the statement made by the opposite party is deliberately misrepresented to be otherwise and an attempt is made to refute that statement which hasn't actually been made by the opposite party and it is pretended as if the actual statement made by the other party had been refuted.
I can imagine the look on the intern’s face: “Bill needs you to build a straw man. No, not a bad argument. He literally needs a straw man. Go buy a bale of straw. I hope your sculpting talent is better than your coffee-making skills.”
When the play "The Book of Mormon" was on Broadway, technically the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints could have sued since "The Book of Mormon" is copyrighted. Instead, they chose to take out advertisements on the playbill and on cabs all over New York that said things like "You've seen the play, now read the book" or "The book was better." Hilarious response.
And who can say this wasn't a better response? Certainly more civilized. For sure cleverer. Violence stinks of, "I could not THINK of anything else to do." The Mormons were clever. That is worthy of respect. Salman's attacker is an argument for Islamophobia. And a damn good one.
Since your brought that up, interesting how you can have a whole Broadway show making fun of Mormonism and no one stabs Trey Parker or Matt Stone, or blows up their cars. But draw a picture of Mohammad and its very likely your office gets firebombed.
I would have to say Bill is a dying breed. He’s the only one on TV right now who seems to literally speak his mind with no thought about who he offends with his honesty. It’s so refreshing that he hasn’t changed in all these years and I’m saying this as someone who didn’t used to care for him but realizing how much I appreciate his perspective. Thank you, Bill, really.
More important than speaking one's mind, he's capable of nuance. He doesn't present issues with a reductionist perspective. Politicians and voters from both parties distort what the other is saying. Until we learn to present our values with more precise and nuanced messaging, this country will remain sharply polarized.
Pay attention how Bill Maher NEVER had knowledgeable practicing Muslim on his show and instead uses Ben Aflack and Strawman to speak to because they cant talk back and provide actual correct teachings or arguments.

Powerful analogy Bill Maher. Defense of free speech should be beyond partisan politics. It should be a stand all Americans should rally to. Without it, first and foremost, all other rights would be non existent.

Your statement isn't completely wrong, but this honor goes to the 2nd Amendment and not the 1st Amendment because all other rights are non-existent without the right to keep and bear arms which the 2nd amendment protects and not just without free speech and freedom of/from religion which is protected by the 1st amendment. Strawman Arguments happen so often that it's hard to tell the difference between actual information and details and what is actually going on. And if we're making progress or not.
Strawman arguments have become so common that the majority of people (maybe in the range of 90%) think they constitute a valid form of argument, and the majority of those people use it as the foundation for almost all of their arguments.
There is a book, “The Seven Fallacies of Debate”, (forgive if that’s not exact), that should be assigned to every high school student. These tactics are being used by our government, and news agencies, and damn near everyone. Straw Man is but one of the seven fallacies. Once you read the book, suddenly you see that almost no one can make a valid point.

Holy Liberal Arts, Batman! This is textbook masterclass of comedy perfection. There is so much going on at once here. The genius stroke was the inspired choice to have a literal Straw-man manifested in physical form for Bill to play off of. Not only did it conjure a literal visual representation of a figurative term, but it elevated the now tired old argument Mr Maur roleplays of having to defend one's self in social discussions with the same cliche extreme jumping to conclusions disingenuous interruptions. I didn't realize till this heightened dramatization just how universally played out this dead end argument really is. But, the mere ridiculousness of the play acting exercise with a literal Straw-man prop truly brings home the utter ridiculousness of the actual Straw-man troupe when used in real life situations. This achieves a perfect balance of the hire wire act that is high-end, high-art comedy. When the comedian is, at heart, an observationalist first and then able to find the humor and absurdity of any given situation. This skit, this brilliant bit and piece of business here, is the ultimate example of achieving this end-game whole-heaetedly with pitch-perfect comedic precision. And Bill Maur is such an Elder statesman of comedy so well-established that we just take for granted his greatness, but if this were preformed by a new up and coming comic we'd praise them for their fresh hot take and that there was a pure new voice in the theatre of yuks. Bill's young at heart status is legacy.
Being a liberal is about accepting and respecting the right for other people to express different opinions. The fact you had to define straw-man arguments shows how badly educated most Americans are in rational thought and debate. We should learn all this stuff in middle and high school, but even most college students have zero patience for philosophical concepts
The subject matter is Strawman and then you type this comment. The irony. Plus you made an assumption based on bias. The fact that he defined it indicates that he is a good journalist or at least trying to be one. The very basics of journalism when reporting or analysing is to assume that the viewer/audience doesn't know what you're talking about. He did right by defining. Good Journalistic skills are an art and science getting lost with the wind because of the ease social media and platforms such as RUclips offer to every Tom, Dick and Susan to post a video online. Everyone thinks they are journalists now just because theyve got good graphic and visual aid skills, yet they are merely mediocre and they are "nornalizing" poor journalism as a standard. Even though this show is an American show, it has a large international audience. You can bet and you'd win if put forth the statement that many many people all over the world don't know what it means. Never the less, just because you know something, don't get cocky with an air of superiority. There probably much you don't know that others in other places learnt in high school or primary. Always assume a spirit of humility when it comes to educating others.

@@Shark-hn4mv Yeah that's true. Conservatives knowingly abuse strawman arguments and projection as a strategy. They don't have any valid arguments or good policies so they have to rely on deception, distraction, hyperbole and mischaracterization. This is used in almost every debate by the Right. For example, when even the mildest forms of gun control legislation is discussed, Republicans immediately run to saying "They're gonna abolish the second amendment" which is obviously a gross overstatement. Every belief on the Right is formed out of Fascist ideology so these underhanded tactics have been perfected to a propaganda art form. Just watch FOX NEWS essentially brainwashing bigoted rednecks armed with AR-15s to hate everyone who isn't a Trump supporter. Great message to spread huh?
I see a lot of straw man responses to tweets and comments on RUclips, and I think this quote is one reason why: "A stupid man's report of what a clever man says is never accurate, because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something that he can understand." - Bertrand Russell
That's probably also the reason why Bill and his writers apparently mistook the one making the argument for the straw man, when it is the argument itself that is the straw man.
Great statement, but needs compression. What about *_tRump lovers love bull-shitting themselves._* ? Bringing tRump to the table looks like straw-manning, but Trump-lover=stupid-man; "love" carries a lot of unconscious background, and bs is to disregard accuracy to favor nonsense.
I always applaud Bill and his commitment to free speech. Without this, there is no true freedom, for an unspoken opinion for fear of reprisal is a mind held hostage. Nothing to do with a mentality of Straw Man (genius of Bill to invite him to the table) yet I felt a bit a pang, a slam of sorts and felt the need to remind us all that warriors come in all shapes, sizes, are women, men, children, and from all walks of life. Some have major impact on a country at large or on the world as a whole. Others might simply, quietly plant trees, or rescue children, animals or lonely people from harm. Some speak up. Some bless others with needed hugs. They don’t complain - they are the doers, courageous with a greater purpose than themselves , a passionate calling for a greater quality of Life for the many. I was one Keyboard Warrior amongst many during the #Standing Rock crisis and oh how I so wanted to be physically present with nearly my all my heart - I say “nearly” because the grandchildren in my care needed me too and they have my whole heart. My “job” is to teach them to do better than me. I, in part wanted to go and be present, on the-ground, fully participate on the ground to teach the children about follow through, show them the importance of having one’s hands and feet match their mouth, their words. Yet, if I was not herewith them, for them, if I did not return to them - many Water Protectors died or are severely damaged by the DAPL COUGH - who then would be their Grandmother and caregiver if I did not return? The late great Native American Professor, activist, #WaterProtector, filmmaker of Awake: A Dream from Standing Rock, journalist, drone pilot, and a phenomenal wayshower and teacher to us all, Myron Dewey of the Paiute Nation very often gave accolades and expressed great appreciation to the Keyboard Warriors for their assistance in tracking, instant research for much needed information and for their sharing of the travesties experienced by the Feet-on-the-ground protectors in real time. He let us know we were invaluable for the fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline. I was humbly honored to serve in this way, to be part of the connection to and with all the Water and Earth Protectors and for the opportunity to share this purposeful action with my grands. Myron Dewey, jailed, his life often threatened, was founder of Digital Smoke Signals. He was killed on a secluded highway in September 2021 and as the LA Times wrote “…the 49-year-old had posted footage on Twitter a day earlier from a central Nevada military installation where he and other members of local tribes have long protested the proposed expansion of a U.S. Navy bombing range” and the mining of lithium which was poisoning the water of local tribes. I do indeed fully appreciate what Bill was saying in that Salman Rushdie is not a keyboard warrior, that he is indeed a real warrior and yet with all due respect he is a writer/author/warrior who needed tools for expression and the assistance of those who love and support him, as well a keyboard. That's actually a non sequitur argument- or translated, 'it does not follow'. A Straw Man is when you misrepresent your opponents argument to be WEAKER than it actually is- and not to add irrelevant premises to their argument.
@@ElazarusWills So it is falsely setting up an argument, which is often weaker than the person's true argument, but not always. It could be the straw man is exaggerated or simpler or just different from the actual argument or position.
I don't think you're right. This is the correct usage of "straw man". If you and I are having a debate about an issue and I am having trouble defending my position, I will misrepresent your position not necessarily to something weaker, but to something DIFFERENT that I will have an easier time debating against. If you say "Islamic fundamentalism is bad because it promotes terrorism, it is anti democratic, anti free speech and preaches against gay rights and woman's rights" , and I am a liberal and I know that you are correct in what you are saying, and technically I should agree with you because Islamic fundamentalism represents everything that liberals like myself have been fighting against for hundreds of years, but I can't agree with you because you might be a conservative and I can never be seen agreeing with a conservative, I will straw man you and accuse you of Islamiphobia because it is easier for me to win a debate against a bigot than with someone that is making good arguments that I can't rationally disagree with. I have turned your position into what I want it to be, instead of what it actually is. I have in a sense, created you, just like a farmer creates a straw man. Isn't that what Bill is talking about here?
Excellent segment, Bill. It's fascinating to see how free speech HAS been under attack in recent years, ESPECIALLY from Americans. The use of speech has been attributed to some form of verbal "violence" if it happens to hurt someone's subjective "feelings", whereas ACTUAL violence (in many cases) has actually been applauded or even dismissed by the SAME people that claim that words ARE violence. The utter idiocy of this, the sheer hypocrisy of this, is beyond ludicrous. But, as you pointed out, when FACTS are used, then strawman arguments abound. The Left (and Rob Reiner, I don't know why you seem to laugh at what Bill said, because YOU are okay with silencing people, a.k.a NOT allowing them to use their Constitutional Right to Free Speech, that disagrees with your political and ideological views!), have been using strawman tactics for some time now. Especially the Main Stream Media. It's sad, and to be honest, it does NOTHING but keep divisions between people who, politics and ideologies aside, would otherwise probably get along. But, then again, isn't division the actual goal of politics and political ideologies today? Keep the people divided, because it serves to benefit the political "elites"!
But when I use this same argument about murderous cops and how minorities are treated in this country I get I’m anti- police or unamerican by people on the right. Isn’t it the same thing? The left doesn’t have a monopoly on Straw man arguments. The right started this shit.
Right wingers of today do not infringe on the right to free speech/expression of others because atleast as of now, no right winger calls for blasphemy to be a crime, which staunch atheists like Bill Maher do commit every now and then. Leftists are the ones who infringe upon this right because the bullshit of cancel culture resulting into censorship has emanated from ideological left and not from ideological right.
@@vidyanandbapat8032 As an atheist myself, I thought that fellow atheists would be the STAUNCHEST supporters of free speech, but alas, I was wrong. Brilliant when it comes to arguing AGAINST religion and religious indoctrination, but so far on the Left that they're okay with censoring people and ideas that does not fit their political narrative. But you're correct, the free speech loving Left of yesteryear has been replaced with extreme Left ideologies that cannot STAND the opinions of the Right that they actually SUPPORT censorship and, even worse, increase Government to apply censorship and/or the eradication of the Right. That was NOT the political Left that I used to be a part of. And the Right of today, whether you want to admit it or not, HAS embraced the ideas and the political ideologies of the original Left.

I've seen a lot of Muslims from the middle east who try to follow the rules of Islam without even understanding them, and some even use to rules that are put there to keep the country together, but the funny thing is that those rules are put in for ppl 2000 years ago, so they don't work today, and it even says in the Quran if we find better ways in life we should follow them, that's why god gave us the freedom to do whatever we want. I think a lot of ppl call it Islam, but in reality, is just their culture, not Islam.
yup and we in Christianity also have a lot about keeping your road to salvation and not spending time on others even if you think you want only to bring them to yours
I disagree. In this case Islam and culture coincide. I understand your view that the soft form of the religion you follow is the correct one, but your religion literally declares you an apostate for doing so. I think that this issue can only be resolved via Muslims having an honest discussion amongst themselves … an honesty that admits to the existence of the dark parts of the religion.

That is the problem with free speech, sometimes you agree with someone and other times you don't. But no matter how much you disagree with someone you still have to protect their right to speak. Now where I draw the line is when people just outright lie, and calling them out on it is not infringing on their right to free speech, it's known as calling it what it is: a pack of lies!

I strongly disagree with perhaps 30% of the views that Maher has. But he is probably my favorite political commentator. And, he is the only comedian who talks about politics who is funny. For comparison, see Colbert and Kimmel. Check out the last 800 "jokes" they have told. None of them are more sophisticated than saying "my political opponents are poopoo pants". That is literally the structure of every "joke" that they tell. Being a Jester and propagandist for an Authoritarian government is very lucrative.
I have stopped watching their shows for a while, their jokes have become too 1-sided and shallow. I want someone like Bill who has the gut to criticize and make fun of all sides.
At 62 years of age, I have developed a method for recognizing when i'm speaking with a purposeful lazy thinker. It's the moment they proudly proclaim, "But what about..." as an actual thought.
As a Muslim I agree with Bill's intent and content but I would add that there are two groups of people that make this problem the way it is. The first are Muslims who have a inferiority complex and become defensive or sympathize with people like the stabbing suspect in hopes to avoid hard answers about members in our community who pull stuff like this. They definitely use a straw man argument in many arguments. Trust me, I've been in one before. Then there is group two who have antagonistic view of Islam and Muslims and wait for moments like this to bring up their views about Islam. They neither ask whether the suspect had other issues (some indications are he was living an Incel life which is Unislamic) and rarely if ever do they point out Muslims who do the opposite of what this man did including Muslim doctors, therapist, dentists, and remained very silent when two Muslim were responsible for the first Covid-19 vaccine. They have an ax to grind and unfinished business. Both groups feed off of each other and intoxicate the discussion that slides into useless bantering over ideological turf.

With a straw man argument, the "straw man" is not the person making the argument, it is the fictitious person being argued against. So Bill Maher bringing a straw man on means that he is the one making the straw man arguments.
The only intelligent thing Boris Johnson ever said: "Have you ever strugled through to the end of one of Salman Rushdie's books? Neither have I. And neither, I bet, did the Ayhatollah"
This would have been a lot better if Bill hadn't started it by setting up his own strawman, "liberals." What liberals? I never heard a mainstream liberal make the kind of statement that he's fussing over. This is why I rarely watch his show any more. Between his smugness and the constant interruptions of applause, it's become tedious.
Man. Prop comedy can be really tough to pull off. But Bill does this in awesome form in this clip!! I’m excited to see if he levels up to ventriloquism in the near future. 😂
The only concern I have at the moment is that our friend Mr Salman Rushdie makes a full and speedy recovery. He is a good and decent man who has an educated opinion on all things Muslim. If anything he is most likely going to pick up right where he was terribly interrupted. All this event did was strenghten his point of debate. I salute you Mr. Rushdie. Speedy recovery to you Sir.👍🙂
Yeah, though I'm seeing more and more how stupid he is. After he dies, someone should make a caricature of him like was made for his great grandfather Soren Kirkegaard (look him up; he's the theological idiot who came up with "truth is whatever you make it" and "take a leap of faith"). Then people can up with a saying "Don't be a Straw Man" to mean don't be stupid, similar to "Don't be a Soren".
Straw man actually a type of red herring. Both fall under the category of informal fallacies of relevance--almost all informal fallacies are relevance fallacies, and many overlap.
It's funny how Bill Maher uses other argument fallacies while trying to point out the straw man fallacy😂😂😂 It's also funny how it took him this long to educate his audience about argument fallacies when he has been using them for countless years 😅😅😅 This just shows how most Americans need to start taking reasoning courses at an early age.

You can tell the attack on Rushdie has affected Maher greatly. In the past 18 months, we’ve lost Norm McDonald, PJ O’Rourke, Bob Saget, Louis Anderson, and Gilbert Gotfried. You are against religion & to you - that means Christianity is part of "religion" that you hate...You assuming that it is acceptable to hate religion (bcz you've gotten away with it for so long going against Christianity) is error & you'll see one day...
Technically Bill's example about Smart Phones was technically a Non Sequitur, but still glad to see that Bill Maher is attacking strawman arguments (no pun 😉🤣).
I'm going to say it's neither. The position was "Technology makes our lives easier" and it's logical to point out "Not everyone's lives." But toddlers? That's exaggeration. That's just humor.
Yep. Completely agree.

And who can say this wasn't a better response? Certainly more civilized. For sure cleverer. Violence stinks of, "I could not THINK of anything else to do." The Mormons were clever. That is worthy of respect. Salman's attacker is an argument for Islamophobia. And a damn good one.

I didn't realize till this heightened dramatization just how universally played out this dead end argument really is. But, the mere ridiculousness of the play acting exercise with a literal Straw-man prop truly brings home the utter ridiculousness of the actual Straw-man troupe when used in real life situations.
@@kamu747 the op specifically makes a comment about American education and he’s somehow wrong due to this show having an international audience? But yes let’s assume more humility and be victimized by regressive tolerance even more. Because Strawman says so!
You mean Straw Persons. Pronouns, Wheat/Chaff

I see a lot of straw man responses to tweets and comments on RUclips, and I think this quote is one reason why:
"A stupid man's report of what a clever man says is never accurate, because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something that he can understand." - Bertrand Russell
That's probably also the reason why Bill and his writers apparently mistook the one making the argument for the straw man, when it is the argument itself that is the straw man.

Legend has it that straw man got his training and tactics of debating from Ben Affleck himself.
I was hoping they would put a Ben Affleck mask on him. Or at least a Batman mask lol
That legend word has been overused ad nauseam
Love it. Absolutely priceless. Especially “Salman Rushdie isnt a keyboard warrior. Hes a real warrior.”
Yeah. And so is Bill Maher - saying that kind of thing comes with real danger, and he would know that. But he said it anyway. True courage.
He was killed on a secluded highway in September 2021 and as the LA Times wrote
“…the 49-year-old had posted footage on Twitter a day earlier from a central Nevada military installation where he and other members of local tribes have long protested the proposed expansion of a U.S.
Many Blessings to you all. I pray for Mr Rushdie’s full recovery and for the cause of journey lived well by Myron Dewey to live on!

i was hoping someone esle was going to point out that his examples were not straw man
I don't think you're right.

The actual Straw Man was the false notion that Bill put out that no one condemned the attacker of Rushdie. In fact almost everyone did.
Hmm 🧐
You can tell the attack on Rushdie has affected Maher greatly. In the past 18 months, we’ve lost Norm McDonald, PJ O’Rourke, Bob Saget, Louis Anderson, and Gilbert Gotfried. Bill was friends (or at the very least was acquaintances) with all of them. The thought of losing Salman to such a heinous attack is probably very difficult for him.
Yea and where is condemnation of Ukrainian terrorist attack on the Dugins
@Rich Perez yeah, also a case of whataboutism
Rich Perez so condemn the Ukrainian terrorist attack on Russian journalist and philosopher, also many other people are on this Ukrainian hit list web site, east to bash Muslims, way more politically incorrect to criticize Ukraine
Jack Black usa has a long history of propping up Islamic extremists in afghansitan, syria, Libya, also usa wars in the Middle East fueled extremism
Jack Black you say whataboutism I say western hypocrisy and American exceptionalism
I've seen a lot of Grammar straw man arguments. Good for telling them bill.
*grammar (said with irony)
@@mikevanroy9356 just proved my point.
Just remember, we also can't have exceptions to violence based on Political beliefs either. Some people are forgetting that.
Bill is just doing his typical anti Islam anti Iran schtick, Where is condemnation of deadly Ukrainian terrorist attack on Alexander and Dariya Dugin? The small coverage it got on usa msm the commentators were practically giddy, and the comment section filled with liberals justifying it. Also usa is supporting Islamic extremists in Syria and xinjiang, attack on Rushdie was probably a massad operation to derail Iran nuclear deal
Don't be delusional Bill - Liberals don't hate you when you speak against "Christianity", you've been doing so for almost your entire career! Go - criticize Christianity & see if the same liberals that are against you when you speak against Islam are going to say the same thing! You seem to not factor something vital here - in this fallen state: religion is not a problem, Christianity is. You are against religion & to you - that means Christianity is part of "religion" that you hate...You assuming that it is acceptable to hate religion (bcz you've gotten away with it for so long going against Christianity) is error & you'll see one day...
Absolutely LOVE Strawman. 😊
Please keep him coming back. 🙏
Technically Bill's example about Smart Phones was technically a Non Sequitur, but still glad to see that Bill Maher is attacking strawman arguments (no pun 😉🤣).
I'm going to say it's neither. The position was "Technology makes our lives easier" and it's logical to point out "Not everyone's lives."
But toddlers? That's exaggeration. That's just humor. It's not a strawman if nobody actually thinks that you are being serious.
Anyway it's good to debate the fallacies, sharpens the wit.
