It’s the government who is telling us these lies. There’s a reason that people only get their news from the internet. If Fox News, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC were trustworthy, so many people would be unemployed, and that includes Bill Maher.

fact is humans have very poor bullshit detectors. Its wishful thinking to think we can stop the harmful effects of lies by just developing better bullshit detectors. We are up against people who do this for a living. Spend their whole lives studying how to influence. From psychologists, to writers, to politicians, marketers etc. How does the average person cope against that?

Indeed. This is the best route, and done impartially. Simply teach how to seek secondary sources and opposing views. The world will and always has been full of lies, as Maher said. It's up to us to sort them and that's one of, if not the main reason, the first amendment exists.

When I tell you that there's a World War II government video titled *Hemp For Victory* which encouraged American farmers to grow "Marihuana" to defend our country, people should be able to find it online for themselves just by knowing the title.
But you'd be surprised how many people tell me to post a link to the video, like they don't have the internet. I tell them, "There is an official .gov link to the video from the US National Archives that comes up through Google." Not even that seems to be enough to help people find it. So, I say, "It's also on several RUclips channels." Since these people are on RUclips, you'd think that they would know how to find a video on RUclips. But even that seems to be too complicated for everyone.

From a purely unbiased, sociological perspective, it's been a weird twist to see people on the right begin to commend Maher while people on the left begin to try and metaphorically 'eat' him. For someone that used to be considered solidly on the left side of the spectrum, it shows how far the goalposts are moving.

Democrats are revealing their dark side, whereas the republican “boogeyman” is being debunked and Republicans are more and more seen as supporting core traditional American values: parental control over childhood education, secure borders, law and order and tough sentencing for felons.

    • @stickman1742
      @stickman1742 2 года назад

The reason is pretty simple, the left has deliberately changed dramatically over the last 5 decades. In the 70s, they were the harbingers or free speech even being willing to defend a member of the KKK. It was the right that was threatening to silence everyone and everything. In the 80s, the left started using PC as a form of censorship and have only gotten worse from there. The left claims they need to censor things everywhere to help protect everyone therefore making it ok. That is exactly the rationale people on the right had often used. Censorship is always the same. Bill and many others on the left have always been against censorship and they have been unwilling to change with the left. I've always been mostly aligned with the left, but I feel the same way as Maher and I know many others that do as well. Today's left is simply unacceptable. They do many of the worst things that people on the left had fought against for decades. Money and power always corrupts.

Yes, well to be clear since liberals are conflated with "the left" in the narrow bounds of what qualifies of public discourse (uncoincidentally so, and relevant to this entire thing), any _leftist_ ie one with a class consciousness, would agree with you and Bill here, the first amendment is literally the only thing in the constitution that is not absolute dogshit, ie an intentionally constructed rube goldberg machine of baffles to dissipate accountability and cement class power (see: Federalist papers, Federalist 10 by Madison comes to mind) explicitly to _suppress_ democracy, contrary to our ubiquitous mythology (also "fun" fact: we literally stole most of it from the Iroquois Great Law of Peace...still "savages" though apparently). Liberals and _especially_ the democratic party are in no way shape or form "left" in any meaningful sense (anticapitalism), foundationally that they support the fundamental root cause of this social antagonism which is capitalism. Spinoza comes to mind, _"why do people fight for their servitude, as if it were their salvation?"_
Bill _momentarily_ (and somewhat indirectly, though it could have led somewhere other than the banal truisms masquerading as insight, had he answered it) asks the correct question, really the _only_ political question of _cui bono?_ (who benefits?) when he asks "who gets to decide what is misinformation?"...but then just immediately moves on without actually answering it, apparently only asking it rhetorically for what I can only presume is supposed to be comedy (to me at least, oof, painfully unfunny). Freedom of speech under capitalism is guaranteed only to those who own/control a platform in which to be heard.
_“The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas, i.e. the class which is the ruling material force of society, is at the same time its ruling intellectual force. The class which has the means of material production at its disposal, has control at the same time over the means of mental production, so that thereby, generally speaking, the ideas of those who lack the means of mental production are subject to it. The ruling ideas are nothing more than the ideal expression of the dominant material relationships, the dominant material relationships grasped as ideas.”_ - some guy
Like my god, instead of perpetually reacting to this inconsequential "culture war" ideological/aesthetic smokescreen, anyone complaining about "culture" in general should maybe consider that "culture" doesn't spontaneously generate from the ether, it is _cultivated_ by the way we organize _material reality_ in terms of ownership and control which then directs social relations, existence _precedes_ essence (see: Sartre). Class, unlike all this other idpol nonsense, does not depend on subjective interpretation and is externally independent organization of material reality that defines orientation of one's _material_ interests. Importantly the class dynamic between the capitalist class and the working class is antagonistic, diametrically opposed, and zero-sum. The only success of the capitalist class is the working class's defeat, inevitably with tidal material forces now entirely out of any individual control, this in actuality ends up in their common ruin of these contending classes (climate change _alone_ ).
_"The bourgeoisie cannot exist without constantly revolutionizing the instruments of production, and thereby the relations of production, and with them the whole relations of society. Conservation of the old modes of production in unaltered form, was, on the contrary, the first condition of existence for all earlier industrial classes. Constant revolutionizing of production, uninterrupted disturbance of all social conditions, everlasting uncertainty and agitation distinguish the bourgeois epoch from all earlier ones. All fixed, fast-frozen relations, with their train of ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions, are swept away, all new-formed ones become antiquated before they can ossify. All that is solid melts into air_ [Metaverse/NFTs/Crypto/finance/tech bs, all unconsciously undergirded by global US corporate empire entirely taken for granted], _all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind."_ - some guy, again, a bit optimistic at the end we wouldn't just choose individual delusion while the planet literally burns around us...

"What revelations with humor will he bring us this week!?" But lately, aren't you just the King of ... Zero insights while turning on the left! (And after what the last 5+ years of trump and the GOP taking America to the edge!) It's America's fault that Russia turned evil because we didn't abolish NATO and greet the past KGB socialpath with open arms the minute the USSR failed?!
Bill, it's only because of your "past" years of unbelievable insights that allows your smug arroganance to survive NOW ... And I'll yell ya, you've always been arrogant but without all those awesome insights, it really shines through now. Sorry .... everyone I know, including myself, really use to idolize you! 😢

There's a World War II video made by the US Department of Agriculture that encouraged American farmers to grow "Marihuana" to defend our country and defeat Fascism. The video is called *Hemp For Victory.* It was banned from history books and public broadcasts for almost 50 years after World War II in order to wage the war on drugs. The film was uncovered in the Library of Congress in 1989 and has been officially available to the voting public from the US National Archives since 1990. There is an official .gov link to the film on every cellphone. It's been there for decades now. It is openly available from the US Federal government and it is on several RUclips channels, but still barely anyone has heard of it and even fewer people care, even as millions of selfish, ignorant consumers vote in state after state to "legalize" Cannabis for corporate profit.

I hear that, and to add to that, he's talking about himself also but he's too up his own ass to realize it. Twitter is a garbage platform for lazy people anyway, who are on their to consume the garbage that other people put out. He misses the forest for the trees way more often than hes right. I've been paying attention to current events for basically 2 years out of 37 and I never had watched his show before 2021, and I long ditched twitter and facebook because I saw where it was going.
The one thing I'll give him credit for is hes right that people are too stupid to fact check things, or do any real research, unfortunately he's in that category also. John Oliver squeezes more information and is a shit ton funnier , with only 30 minutes, Bills show is an hour, he talks over people he disagrees with, and lets whoever holds his viewpoint ramble on. He's been on the air long enough to produce something way better than what he puts out, yet he consistently just reaches for the low hanging and tired fruit.
I only pay attention to politics at all because I started to recognize where things were heading around mid 2020, and sadly I've been right about almost every prediction I've made, because none of the information that formulated my opinions came from social media.

Believe me. But they're not in the same league. It's like saying that McDonald's has substandard salads. They're McDonald's. They're not there for salads.
