Legend has it that the Democratic nominee for President in 1952, Adlai Stevenson, was once informed by an aide shortly before the election that "every thinking person in America is voting for you." His response: "That's great, but I need a majority."
Hate it when liberals say stuff like this. The subject of john oliver came up when a colleague (fellow psychologist) and I were discussing politics a few months ago. Although we were both in agreement regarding the general shitlib inanity of the HBO show, my friend was surprised when I explained that the real insidiousness of it is its unmistakably hypnotic structure and pacing. I ended up pulling up an episode or two off of youtube to show her what I meant. All of the segments I've ever seen from this show follow the same repetitive format: present some "argumentation" and "facts" for about 10 seconds, then quickly follow these up with a snarky quip (which themselves overwhelmingly take the form of complete non-sequitur or otherwise absurd metaphor) before any rational processing of the preceding argument can take place in the mind of the viewer. Further telling is that the only 'beats' or mental pauses in the show's pacing exist solely to highlight the approving laughter or applause of the studio audience. Repeat this basic formula without variation 20-40 times in a row and you have one of the 12-20 minute 'segments' that form the backbone of the show. The end effect is (obviously) not to deliver information, but rather to literally teach the viewers -- on a subconscious level - to mentally associate derisive laughter with any person or opinion that is at odds with the narrative's take on the chosen issue. And it accomplishes this by maintaining a strict adherence to a roughly 20-second cycle in which a stimulus is presented, and a response is cued. This is the sense in which the show is fundamentally hypnotic in effect - even moreso than its precursors in the genre (Daily Show, Colbert, etc). To my mind, oliver's show is representative of the media's increasing mastery of the methodologies of mass conditioning; in fact it is almost such a perfect technical accomplishment
Unfortunately that didn't include the democratic party leadership, the most tone-deaf people in the USA. Trump is easily beatable but they can't do it because they refuse to turn their backs on the donor class, which is what Americans desperately want. Trump is an unintelligent poser, but he gives that desire lip service, while the rest adopt and "Eff you, we know what's best for you" attitude.
It's the aesthetic that they are after, not the meaning behind it. Take for example the Iron Cross which in its strictest definition is a Prussian and German military award given for bravery and acts of exceptional quality done by a German soldier, now it serves as a decoration for far-right folks. Or the Totenkopf (Death's Head) which is emblematic of the SS but it originally started as a symbol for the various German military units such as the Prussian Cavalry or the Brunswick infantry along with black uniforms...

Women are entitled to boundaries and consent, and yes, absolutely women are being disadvantaged (not to mention in some cases physically injured) by male competitors in women's sport. No means no, and the answer is no. What don't you understand about that?
Unfortunately, in our small town in Maine, our excellent, Trans Town Manager has resigned from her position after this election after facing a year of constant threats and harassment from the Town Council (which was populated after the 2023 election with three new MAGA members) and members of the community. This election added yet another far-right council member -making them the majority, which seemed to be the last straw for our Town Manager. This past week the Town Council had its first meeting since the election. Over 50 people from our small town showed up to support our Town Manager and berate the Council members. Unfortunately, the members in question are too far gone to consider they are the problem. With this new election, they will be worse than ever. It's going to be a very ugly future for our town if the community goes back into their holes and doesn't hold the TC accountable.
The thing that really hit scary for me is that people will vote _only_ on their perception of the economy and can't even tell what that is. Some people will say they're better or worse off and it's not rooted in anything that a president does. *You're better off under Trump? Really? Is that before his policies start to have an effect or when he leaves?*
Every time a president leaves office, we get the most benefit from his policies. It's such a farce to sit and watch people respond with their gut reactions. So hard to remain patient when these people are most of the electorate. We need better education.

The subject of john oliver came up when a colleague (fellow psychologist) and I were discussing politics a few months ago. Although we were both in agreement regarding the general shitlib inanity of the HBO show, my friend
was surprised when I explained that the real insidiousness of it is its unmistakably hypnotic structure and pacing. I ended up pulling up an episode or two off of youtube to show her what I meant. All of the segments I've ever seen from this show follow the same repetitive format: present some "argumentation" and "facts" for about 10 seconds,
then quickly follow these up with a snarky quip (which themselves overwhelmingly take the form of complete non-sequitur or otherwise absurd metaphor) before any rational processing of the preceding argument can take place in the mind of the viewer. Further telling is that the only 'beats' or mental pauses in the show's pacing exist solely to highlight the approving laughter or
applause of the studio audience. Repeat this basic formula without variation 20-40 times in a row and you have one of the 12-20 minute
'segments' that form the backbone of the show. This is the
sense in which the show is fundamentally hypnotic in effect - even moreso than its precursors in the genre (Daily Show, Colbert, etc). To my mind, oliver's show is representative of the media's increasing mastery of the methodologies of mass conditioning; in fact it is almost such a perfect technical accomplishment

HBO, thank you for a full episode.
This is the
sense in which the show is fundamentally hypnotic in effect - even moreso than its precursors in the genre (Daily Show, Colbert, etc). To my mind, oliver's show is representative of the media's increasing mastery of the methodologies of mass conditioning; in fact it is almost such a perfect technical accomplishment
@@YolandaPlayne Looks like I'm the only one who read her cockamamie comment. John Oliver doesn't deliver information. ok, right! go back to your ivory tower and write other diatribes that no one reads.

And they just keep getting worse.
the fact CNN and MSNBC hate his cabinet means it's a good thing. :)
