Just a good ol' boy born and raised in Alberta, Canada, I’m the proud owner of this 1979 Peterbilt 359 rescued after it was left for dead in a farmer’s field.
Originally used for hauling heavy equipment in the Alberta oil fields, my Pete later ended up pulling a gravel belly dump b-train until it was eventually “retired” to haul the occasional hay bale load for local farmers before being parked in a field near the owner’s home near Mundare.
In the late 90’s I learned the art of trucking from my cousin driving an almost identical 359. I went on to become a mechanical engineer working for a large international corporation but all the while never losing my love for classic trucks and always had my sights set on a twin stick 359.
After placing an ad on Kijiji looking for one, I was contacted almost immediately by the owner of a Pete with a 6x4 Spicer who was very surprised that anyone would want a two-stick transmission. I went out to see the truck that weekend and ended up buying it “as is/where is” (see Season 1 episode 1). I ended up mounting new tires and wheels on the front and had it towed home.
Powered by a Caterpillar 3406A, it has a deep reduction plus Spicer 6x4 double overdrive transmission. The tractor is all original but unfortunately suffered from generations of mice growing up in the interior while it was idle.
I’m currently in the process of restoring this Pete and plan to use it primarily for personal use when finished. I’m looking forward to driving it to shows or the lake with my 5th wheel camper in tow.
I’m not planning a “full classic resto,” but rather a “make it as nice as possible” and as close to original as I can. Planned upgrades include a drop visor, 8-inch straight pipe miter stacks w/pickett elbows, new Bostrom low rider seats, upgraded sleeper, new interior, Texas Blade front bumper, chrome air cleaners, polished tanks and wheels, lots of lights, train horns, classic dual round headlights, and a new paint job in Peterbilt Sovereign Blue with Seminole stripes.
My backyard DIY outdoor restoration of this classic truck in the sun, rain, snow and wind is currently being fully V-logged on RUclips … checkout “359Twinsticks” to see them all / @twinstix

Looking good. Keep it up buddy. I’m gonna watch till you get it done.
You will not be disappointed with the Dan's shop wiper (dirks) kit. I've done two in both my 359s and they work great! Flawless install. Keep up the great progress
Love watching the progress 👍🏼👍🏼
i like your project and i want to see more videos. great job !
Glad to hear you’re putting the single rounds on.....I’ve been looking forward to another vid...keep em comin!
Glad to see a fellow Albertan making awesome videos, can't wait for the next episode!
Great video's! A truck without front brakes? Amazing! Can't imagine that having been possible here in Europe 😂
Love watching your videos of this older peterbilt please keep making them
Very joyful watching your hard work on this 359. Drove one many years ago and would like to again. My brother totaled it on Donners Pass. No lives lost but big mess. Oh those trucker stories to tell. Good luck and I’ll be watching your progress. Be well
Brian Joyce thanks for the kind words
Looking good. Can’t wait to see it moving again. Good job!
I love what your doing. Can’t wait to see more. That truck is bad ass. Never knew about front breaks.
I had the windshields replaced last year in my 1986 peterbilt 349 the guy had no problem ordering the replacements. They had a little more tint then originals. If they make them use laminated glass not just plate glass.
The rubber duck is perfect for this truck love it
Amazing job makeing her like new again keepIt up love watching these
all right now good to see ya well keep my eye on you, ya. go for it ya.
Good choice on the head lights. That look way better on it. I mentioned that early on one of your earlier videos.
Very good job, I will be following your work and I wish you the best for this restoration
greetings from Mexico
Keep up the progress. Gives me something to look forward to.
Hey Man, good videos. My '87 359 has a factory air switch for the front brakes on the dash just above the suspension and lock up switches. I run them all the time, but if it's icy or gross I can shut 'em off. It's great, you can always steer and don't have to worry about one side or the other locking up. (Also good if the fronts are out of adjustment lol). People have to remember, that old gear was built and run long before ABS came on the scene.
Joe Gannon ... no school like old school 😎
Super excited to see more of this bad ass truck. Keep up the awesome work.
Thanks for the update looking great
Brakes, who needs brakes...okay, j/k lol. Anyhow, cool project! Love old Petes!
very interesting my friend! keep videos coming please! i cant wait to see it restored!
Amazing build can't wait for more!
Enjoying watching the videos so far mate, keep up the good work
Thing will be badass. Still disagree with a newer bunk though if that’s still the plan
Kurt Guy ya the bunk I bought will probably go on ... condition is too good and will save a bunch of $$$ ... it’s a 63 flat top from an 89 Pete 379 so it will be exact other than the door on the driver side is smaller. I’ll always have the cool cap from this one if I get ambitious and want to swap
So the interior will match ?
Kurt Guy ... Ya make the cab match the new or I guess newer sleeper I bought that has a gray and black interior.
The duck on the hood is the same duck from Convoy, the movie. "Rubber Duck's" Mack has one of these in the hood as well. Nice!
i watched all the other videos today for the first time and i was worried i wouldn't see another video until next year lol
Making a truck with no breaks that's a smart design
Paul Williams no front brakes ... will have all new rears ... perfectly acceptable according to Canadian transport law. Keep in mind this and many other trucks like it pulled thousands of loads in this configuration with no issue
359 TwinSticks but front breaks on all vehicles do most of the stopping power it's physics. It's just surprising that they didn't put on front breaks were they trying to save money. It's a beautiful truck did you get it at a good price when it was sitting in that field I wonder why the owner left a good truck like that to rot away. Thanks
Paul Williams front brakes can be a hinderance on a muddy road ... cause the tires to lock up and slide you into the ditch ... even on the new truck the majority of the braking comes from the back due to the significant load placed on the rears by the fifth wheel. Got a good deal on the truck as I bought it as is where is ... new exhaust pipes are gonna cost me more than I paid for the whole truck. This truck was the previous owner’s pride and joy but his health caused him to park it many years ago.
359 TwinSticks thanks.
I can't wait to see the next video this 100 percent awesome.
Awesome series. Keep up the great work
Keep em coming buddy
You got yourself new subscriber. Cool project! Can't wait to see more ;)
Keep making videos man look forward to how it turns out👍👍
The duck comment is pricless 😂😂😂😂😂 lookin good
keep it up, your doing a good job 👍
Been following you and looking forward to your next video..
Gotta love those old Petes. It's a shame the previous owner abandoned her like that.
Wasn’t by choice ... his health took a turn for the worse so he was forced to let her sit out there. I’m grateful he was willing to part with her and let me take a run at bringing her back to life
359 TwinSticks Good you were able to get the old girl. It would be cool vid giving the previous owner a ride when you get here done. Been following these vids since I subbed.👍
dude great find keep up the videos :)
I want more videos, truck is looking good.
Great videos. I would LOVE to build a project truck. Keep up the good work!
I can't wait to see it run
Lucas Demerchant ya it’ll be pretty cool to have her move under her own power again
I am not sure if you are going to but if you are cleaning the frame up you should pull the 5th wheel off the frame it will be nasty under there I pull mine off once a year to clean and paint under it to stop the rust. Like to see guys bring back the old trucks they will last longer then the new cheap junk they build now.
Distin Rieck ya that’s the plan ... lots of rust jacking between the inner and outer channels as well that’ll need to be cleaned out
At 3:30 We have a radio EXACTLY like that one Almost brand new Looks good And is in good condition it works aswell.
You should have used a 5000 psi pressure washer. It would have stripped all that rust and paint off and a little cheaper
For the headlights, use LED sealed-beam units.
Awesome fkn video !
Turn on those ad's brother get you some extra revenue coming in on this project, invested on this build with you!
this is awesome! Just watched all the videos. I work at Stahl peterbilt. Hope the parts guys are treating you well. Ill have to ask the foremans if they recognize the name that was on the sleeper.
Aaron’s been a big help
Nice
As long as you sand the tanks down good you could polish the tanks out good
Coming along nicely! I like the homage to the Rubber Duck Mack truck on the hood LOL! Did you get a replacement sleeper yet? I remember talking to you on here and you said the original needed too much work and you weren't going to sink the money into it. Budgets count, been there done that myself. I recently let go of my 94 Mack CH after owning her since new, she had started to rust in places and needed an overhaul and the transmission had gone out. Miss the old Bulldog, she was a family member at this point. Got a good deal on a four year old one.
Yup picked up the sleeper and it’s sitting in the shop waiting to be mounted. Old sleepers the next thing to come off. You can see the new sleeper in an earlier video I posted. Planning to paint the can and hood that same colour
I would keep the dual round “classic” factory headlights, it makes the front fenders look too wide with small single headlights when it’s coming at you. Keep it classy and stock. Just my 2 cents. Your truck is so worth restoring !
They weren't dual round, they were dual rectangle headlights.
Very cool🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Look up history of Al Peterman that started Pete. Please think about a wood panel in front of the seats. Black and grey will look killer.
Call the truck big blue
Since you shop at 4states trucks you should check out the floor in Bryan's 359
It'll give you some ideas
Watch the rear diffs for rot as you go through everything, I will be doing this kind of work as well with my 2002...
A bloke here in aus has for sale a Mack Superliner on Trucksales Australia, he restored it spent $350,000, now selling, asking $300,000 so trucks can cost a lot of money plus time to restore.
actorzone is that Jon Kelly of HHA? I’m thinking it’s the one he featured on an episode of Megatruckers on Netflix
359 TwinSticks, I don't know, i was looking at Mack trucks and came across this advert, If you look up Trucksales.com.au obviously and Australian website its listed for sale at the moment as i checked it before commenting
Coming along pretty nicely. Can you please tell us how much is the total budget you considering for this job? Thank you
Just gonna keep at it until it’s done ... wherever I land it’ll still be south of a new one 😏
Run that air line on the rear axle UNDER the radius rod, it will break when you go through a hole, and chafe badly.
Great progress. Do you have experience doing this before, or are you learning as you go? Looks like a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. A real cool project.
littlewingpsc27 ... nope ... learning as I go 😆 but having a great time doing it
Front brakes due to ice they aren't fitted?
I have an old 2004 Ken t800 and want to do a sandblast paint on the rear Chassi when i go ask what is the number i should expect to hear as far as price?
Just discovered your videos today. You have a good voice for this type of thing. What are the two levers on the right of the steering column that say something about parking on them?
Thanks ... the longer lever controls the air to the trailer brakes ... think of it like the slider on your trailer brake actuator on your pickup. All rigs have these but this truck has a second shorter lever for the CAT Brakesaver ... essentially a reverse torque converter that applies engine oil either automatically or when you pull the lever in manual mode ... the drag of the oil slows the engine and drive train so it’s another tool you have for stopping. There is a warning on both that says “do not use for parking”
U can get aftermarket tanks for pretty cheap
also air track susp bushing kits
Looks badass. Sounds good to. How’d you get the duck on there without taking the hood off
Jalenwalshak359 there’s an access door on the hood to get at the rad cap ... had to grind off the rivets to open but then was easy to bolt him on
Where is it I don’t think my 81 has that in the hood. I got a swan for mine and don’t wanna screw up the grill trying to crawl in to put it on. Do u have a Instagram?
Jalenwalshak359 its a 6”x4” hinged door right behind the hood grill on the top. If you really wanted to you could pull the hood off the mounts and set on the ground then crawl under ... only 4 bolts
Instagram and Twitter @359twinsticks
How hard is it to put the light panels on above the steps on the cab
Como está a condição dos eixos traseiros? Estão bom, você não vai desmontar para revisar?
cool
I've heard a story about how a guy went to get his class A license on a truck like this that came from the factory with no brakes and they failed him on the spot. Or the guy could have been getting said truck inspected, honestly I can't remember anymore. Also how many gears does the main box have?
6 speed in the front, 4 speed in the back ... Spicer double overdrives
You aught to start doing some junkyard watching and find you a disk brake setup to put under it
What did you do with the old square headlights? Any chance youd want to sell them?
scott blume sold them yesterday to a local guy who’s gonna put them on a newer Pete
I got a set of used fuel tanks off my 379 with b model if u need any
Josh Talbert awesome ... send me an email to 359twinsticks@gmail.com with the details
Do you have a game plan? Or just decide on the day, what you pull apart next? Shotgun approaches never work.
Rain Coast there’s a master plan but time and money are dictating the order of work
plastic brake lines is ok , but make sure its ápproved tubes , its are many brands and shit plastic hoses out on the market ,
What in the name of duck is on the hood?
Has the engine been rebuilt?
Bug TKZ was awhile back according to the previous owner ... but she’s probably gonna be due again. Eventually I’ll pull it out of the frame that’ll allow me to get at the front rails and clean up all the grease, rust, etc. Priority this year is to get it safe and on the road so I can shuffle the sticks a few times before winter hits again
my truck doesn't have front breaks either
Hey I just had seen your post on tms
brandon moffatt sorry but what’s “tms”?
Junk yard have $300-750 tank that look like new as I saw video from other RUclipsr

Robert Cowan send me an email with pics to 359twinsticks@gmail.com
The windshields from a 379 are the same as the 359
Good to know ... thanks
Good to know ... thanks
Hmmm sorry about that i could have sworn they are the same ,when i had the windshields replaced in 1979 359 the window guy said they fit and thats what he was putting in it, but who knows maybe there was some pre cutting of the 379 windshields to make a fit that he never mentioned. Truck looks good by the way. And good luck on it.
First 😛👍👍
Waiting on new video 😐
Make a new update video
Add another vid
I do not know what sort of budget you are willing to spend on this but I would very strongly recommend a complete kit of front brakes plus that there dash doodad that allows control of how much front brakes you have.
The issue I am emphasizing is LEGAL LIABILITY . Merely because you can legally manage without front brakes ,in law, does NOT mean it is a good idea, particularly if you travel in the USA. One bad accident ,if the other side hires a competent ambulance-chasing shyster lawyer and your ass is grass and you will spend the rest of your life paying for it. Do you wish to risk spending the rest of your life being a lawn to a money hungry lawyer and his asshole of a client ?
I know what I am talking about. Not personally but for instance New York State has an "interesting" body of law called "joint and several liability". Put paid to Canada's biggest car rental company. Was it Tilden? Cannot remember the name.
Never leave a shyster an edge. Cover your derriere. This is just too obvious a gap. Please. If you have ever taken advice from the internet,PAY a competent lawyer who practices within legal liability for an opinion. It will be worth every penny you spent.
If I am wrong I will apologize to you personally. I wish I was wrong but I am not.
Sorry but that’s a money pit
Jeff Sutton ya but it’s a fun pit
It's not about the money
Bet you’re fun to hang around with
I think your doing a great job because your restoring history
Nice
Looking good keep up the hard work. I think the single round is the only way to go on the Petes. Dont let the money pit commits bring you down, I am currently restoring a John Deere 4430 and have sank alot in it but its just about finished and I cant help but to smile every time I walk in my shop and see it. BTW be sure to put some type of primer over the bare metal as you sand blast cause blasting paint off is alot faster than having to blast rust off.
Gidday from Australia. Really looking forward to seeing you get this Pete rolling! Great project- keep up the great work & posting updates. Love the twin sticks!
I just started watching your progress. Everything looks great so far. You're making progress. Takes time, when you're doing things solo, and of course....money doesn't grow on trees. I had NO idea there weren't front brakes. I'm not sure I'd be ok with that.
I'd suggest, for small, manageable parts, get a stand-alone sandblaster that is self-contained. You won't go through sand nearly as much and it's a breeze cleaning parts. You could probably just build your own, but they aren't expensive, given that you have the space to keep one and you have the compressor(s) and lines. Keep up the good work!
Looking good man, you're lucky, we just had a freezing rain storm in Onterrible. Got as much snow as we had most of the winter today.
How about replacing the floor with nice hardwood. That would look great.😊👍
love the progress. great job!!! how much were the chrome air cleaners?? I have a 351 Pete with one old steel air filter I would like to replace. my truck has a 5x4
T&F Logging guy that sold me the truck threw them into the deal but I’ve seen them in the local paper for $500 ... nice to hear another twin stick is still running out there
Check out this wet-blasting for rust-removal, Its wayyy better than dry sandblasting and (obv.) depending on your media you can get a nicer finish. Should use a needle-scaler for the heavy rust before using this type of unit. Not sure which the best unit is, but this Dewalt appears to be a decent combo of cost, quality and results - ruclips.net/video/mYtbPG1RKgY/видео.html
Jake switch looks good but you should have two, one for on off and a second 3 position switch for low, medium and high or middle two cylinders on low, front two and rear two for medium and all 6 for high. Straight on off you either have all running with is overkill for most situations or half which could leave you scrambling when you need more at the wrong time. front brakes were an option that a lot of trucks never came with. If you have a "rain/dry" switch in the cab it had front brakes otherwise it didn't.
On a Twinstick binge ! Love the work from 5 years ago
