RECOVERY OF A NEGLECTED V8 DUMP TRUCK

- After spending most of last week digging up the yard and making a large mess we decided to invest in some machinery to assist in the clean up operation.
And in true style what a better starting point than a neglected V8 dumper.
You fellas are literally living the dream.....soak it up and don't underestimate what an awesome time you're having......love the content. Tip top 😊
I just love how these guys come up with a random project and Joe’s just like “guess we’ll need a dump truck now” and then 3 minutes and 26 seconds later he’s only gone and got one?! 😂
Yeah and a tank or two. Those things are now irreplaceable fantastic video again from the Hewes team
That Iveco smokes less than your Foden. The Iveco engines I’ve been very impressed with since working on them at FH Burgess on the big Fiat Tractors 40 plus years ago and on commercial trucks 20 years ago. They definitely know how to build a good engine.
As a real ageing Resto ex-Bricklayer it made me very happy to hear you say you are salvaging the brick and not crushing them. My first job after leaving School in 1983 was to hand dress off 29,000 reclaimed bricks with a scutch hammer now you'd just drag out on of your scutch guns and run it off the compressor. So good luck and enjoy Joe and co 😂👍.
I’m a hobby bricklayer, got all the paperwork and that but it’s something I’ve never done professionally, but I do really enjoy it. It’s an odd world, I’ll agree… :) I haven’t a clue what a scutch gun is but it sounds handy, as I reuse a lot of bricks! Unfortunately, Google is not my friend…
I Cannot Believe that it started up ! And you were able to raise up the bed ! ( and Lightning Did Not Strike the thing either). Very Impressed !
Cheers From California 😎
@@Lewis-kf2pj We used the use toothed hammers called a scutch like a brick hammer ish, if you watch Joe's films they now call them Needle gun's I think and use them on heavy rust , chap 👍
I can feel the tendinitis in my elbows ramping up just from reading your comment, brother Iain!
@@Lewis-kf2pj do you want to come visit and lay some bricks for us
Those Deutz V8 certainly were tough. Back in the late 70s I was in the South African army driving a 6x6 10 ton dropside truck - called Magirus Deutz 232. The cab was the same as the Iveco but different chassis. It was semi desert dusty and temperatures of up to 52C.
I had a runaway when overloaded and ended up going around 80 mph down a hill when the truck was geared for 50 (2800 rpm)
The rev counter wound around until it was back at idle (+-4500 rpm) .
The only harm done was that the rockers smashed through the covers. I patched the holes with epoxy and drove it just about every day for 9 months without a problem.
the rockers showed those covers whos boss
@@AkiUwUx3 German Engineering for sure. The power of German Engineered Steel.
That Foden makes a great sound and does its best work at tickover. Adam definitely suits it.
Congratulations. You've got yourself a Magirus dump truck. I know it says Iveco on the grille, but it is a Magirus. These trucks are iconic in Germany, indestructible. The Russians bought large numbers of them for use in Siberia because of the quality and the aircooled engines. This one has a V8 engine, but there were also V10 engines. Restore it to its former glory, and you will have something very special.
Magirus Deutz for the win! I bet that there is not even a single piece/part from China on this truck. Real "Deutsche Wertarbeit" from the old days.
Best regards, luck and health in particular.
Indeed, legendary in Russia as it was the work horse of Baikal-Amur railway construction.
I drove them for a few years and use to repair them the engines was a pig to work on the brakes was a pig to many working parts use to sizes up ones
they got water and dirt and mud in them another problem was the engine breather fed to no 1 cylinder and used to burn the piston on the left hand side lost count how many engines i worked on and the brakes etc ok when they was running but a pig when there was a problem
Its as good as a Tatra from CSSR!
Drove them and repaired them they was always something wrong with them the braking system was useless to many small moving parts in the drum the air cooled engines was a problem lost count how many I had to repair engine oil pipe breather was fed into the left manifold for the first cylinder and eventually would melt the piston on the first cylinder I could go on about a lot more problems with the magi but it would run into hours and now don't have the time the only good thing about on model the bell housing there was a prop shaft to the gear box that was set further back so it made fitting a new clutch a doddle
I'm 54 years old but still become that big eyed school kid when i see proper old heavy equipment working
What a machine! Anybody would think it had been parked up yesterday going by how easily it fired into life!
It's a testament to the original design and construction of the vehicle.
It's a reliable Deutz engine. Those are indestructable if maintained regularly
Maggie deutz 6 wheel tipper, had them in Hameln in 90.( Ex RE) they are proper squaddie proof
Used to run a Magi Deutz back in "86" on an open cast down Staffordshire way, draggin full loads of the black stuff from the bottom, 100+ metres up 1 in 3 dirt tracks to load onto 44 tonne tipper trailers.
Awesome bit of kit, diff locks on it never broke even a sweat.
As a retired iveco electrician and worked on the old magi,s what a joy it was to see your old dump truck start first time. I was glad for you because if you had engine problems, you’d need a specialist. I’m hoping that you keep it and do it up , what a machine.
The demolition company I worked for in the 80’s in Essex used to have 6 of those iveco trucks. Such a great work horse and totally indestructible and loved the sound of the V8 air cooled engine.
Good to see one again👍
Brilliant job getting the dumptruck up & running & into use right away! From Germany to Baghdad to Blighty! That's recycling, also recycling these bricks - awesome!!
Reminds me of being a kid in the 70’s and playing with my Tonka trucks. Happy days. 😊
Tonka was the best weapon on the playground when moronic kids came up with plastic crap
Who needs Thunderbirds, when we have Mr Hewes & Co Rescue Service 😁
Dont forget Ted! 😀
Steady on Adrian, thunderbirds. lol.
Engine retarderz?.
@@457flyby FAB!
Was gunna say, ted is the key to this management
That Foden sounds bloody gorgeous
My exact sentiments.
The local council up here used to have these wagons as snow ploughs and Harry that drove them said nothing could plough like them, you could charge into 6ft of snow and it would just fly off the V plough. I’m sure Harry’s sending his blessings from up above 👍🏻🏴
I drove Magi’s snow ploughs in the 80’s the snowplough restricted the airflow which led to overheating. To be honest probably when new they were ok but when we got them with the council they were shagged out pieces of crap. Used and abused at Sullom Voe.
The crash box and running gear were great, engine rebuilds were so common the councils welder made a frame that rotated the engine so it could be worked on.
One depot had an exceptional head mechanic who swopped the engine out of it for a decent motor, but I can’t remember what they put in. It was a beast up the glens.
Foden is an utter beast. I love it.
Maggie Deutz dumptruck, with the V8 Deutz. Had a 6 cyl Deutz in a Poclain TCS a few years ago, been sitting in the yard for about 5-6 years, couple of batteries and she fired straight up. The Boys over in Ireland got a straight 6 Deutz to run after it had been submerged for 20 years in a Peat bog, they are so simple, it takes an awful lot to break them.
Had these as Bowsers and Lube Trucks on the opencast over 30 years ago but they were V10 with a ZF Box, great Trucks, although they had Magirus Deutz on the front Grill.👍
Wow. Can't wait for that truck to start takin loads like Jack's mum!
Thanks for the updates, boys! Glad to see that drying out the pit was worthwhile 😂
I'm starting to think this channel is secretly an advert for those jump packs.
If not, they should be a sponsor.
Love the Foden!!!!!!! Did my DI course at AMS Leconfield, driving 8 legger. Dropped all my air in Beverley, had to use emergency lift valve, just as I entered Leconfield base , rear brakes locked on!!!!!!!
That's what you call a real dump truck that thing is a beast my goodness that thing is awesome!!!!! Keep up the great videos I love your content!!
That dump truck looks exactly like the Tonka one I pined after as a child! Great to see it running again.
I love how the Foden moves and hoists heavy equipment at an idle. 😅
Your vid shot from the asbestos roofing through the grass of it being towed out, was beautiful. Simple, elegant and well framed, with that big tree in background.
I owned a 1966 Maggi 120 D10, with the7.5 Litre 120 hp V6 Air cooled motor, before I got my 1967 Mercedes LA911. Great Truck with permanent 4x4 and a centre locking diff, a bit like the Landy Defender setup.
But with that air cooled V6 sitting just in front of you, it was loud!, but so fun to drive.
The close-up of Joe's expression (that perfect mix of "Holy Crap" and "Well Of Course It Would"), when the V8 started with no histrionics whatsoever, was priceless...
lovely set of leaf springs on that ol'girl
Yes! It's so nice to see the foden driving on roads instead of being trailered! I'm happy
Magirus Deutz v8 air cooled. Used to love driving them when I came out of the reme . I had a 6 x 6 one
Man I love the Foden!
Love the exhaust sound on the recovery truck 😎👏🏻👏🏻
Dear Mr..Hewes.
👍👌👏 Oh WOW, simply fantastic! This big old Magirus Deutz dump truck fired right up! It simply wants to run and work. Real "Deutsche Wertarbeit" from the old days (German craftsmanship/quality). I bet that there is not even a single piece/part from China on this truck! Please put the bonnet back on. This big ol' gal definitely deserves some TLC.
Thanks a lot for making explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and especially health to all involved people.
A right Tonka Toy, great bit of kit
"Here's where the axle falls off" 😂😂 laughed a little bit to much at that statement as I once lifted an Austin K9 the same way and the axle stayed on the floor, oh how we laaarfed 😂😂
Well done mates on getting the dump truck Home running and pretty much squared away ,I can't wait until you get started on the basement again that is History and very interesting .
I used to do all this type of stuff a few years back.
Well, over 30 years ago. In my garden (and also in my head), with Corgi, Dinkey and Tonka toys.
I used to maintain a small fleet of those for the Pioneers in the late 1980s they were brilliant as long as you kept on top of them. The Unit loved them too. Very capable tippers
It is amazing that something sitting around for that long without being used just fires right up. With all the rain, at least you know that fire you had in the furnace is out. 🙂
Hi guys, well thst was another successful rescue by Mr Hewes and the team, great to see old gear like this back working, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia, Les
You have bought an awesome classic Magi Deutz , great tough much loved rare classic brand .
Look on your face when it fires up is priceless, I've been there countless times too.
These past few videos have been more enjoyable than 20 years of Time Team
Well done lads! it is literally almost impossible to kill those Deutz Air cooled diesels.
No doubt the best advert for a jump pack the internet has ever seen. Or should I say two jump packs!
Awsome piece of kit. On a positive side, you didn't need to worrky about dust with all that dirt 👍
Joe you have a great taste in classic truck's please keep it up 🎉
At least the rain kept the dust down😂
Maaate!
Epic stuff.
Clasic Big Iron!
At least working with the bricks in the rain there is buggerall dust 😀
Glad you are reclaiming the bricks.
Cheers for sharing.
That has got to be one of the easiest recoveries they've ever done. No fuss, no drama just air, and a quick tug of the bushes....
I have a couple of these 232 magirus ‘s and they smoke just like yours when starting up
I also have a Magirus Jupiter F8L714A Duetz once you’ve warmed the glow plugs just touch the key and it purrs no smoke and a crisp clear sound I love ❤️ it
How could you be a Brit and not love the rain? My nan was from Wolverhampton (moved to Canada in the late 60's) and she LOVED the rain and overcast skies because she said it reminded her of home.
Really enjoyed watching your videos always do
We had a Maggy dumper in the quarry I worked in 40 years ago, only a few years old. Driver friend Terry decided to treat the cab to a hose out. After a couple of days it was smelly and after four days it was making him retch. noticed it was worse when the air brake released and after quite a time getting in there found a rejuvenated desiccated rat. Came to the conclusion it must have been factory fitted as there was no hole big enough for it to get in !
FODEN looks well turned out, i must say ! 😊❤
That dumper is the spit of my 70's Tonka-Toy, and I never did break it 😁 👍👏
Nice to see the Foden being put to work! you just need some black beacons for it now!
It’s amazing what you do with that Foden. 👍🏻😀
That foden is probably the best thing you ever bought. Massively powerful and hugely versatile
Vehicles aside, I am impressed with your skill in holding on to your phone when filming out of the window of a moving truck or wading in a flooded basement.
That basement is actually a good catch for all the yard fluids. Lots of colours in that pool.
Hope everyone's doing well and thank you for another video!
I wanted to thank you and whoever edits your videos. I appreciate that there is no annoying music throughout your entire videos. I enjoy what you guys are doing in your videos and what machines you're working on. Everybody is so laid-back and chill. Everybody has a great sense of humor. It's awesome!
There are many videos on RUclips that end up being filled with music that is too loud that you can't hear what's going on in the video. And the music itself is terrible. So again, thank you!
These aircooled V8's are the work👌
There you go, nice tow truck for the Nato trailer thingy.
Can't complain about the Deutz I'd guess. Starts way better than a Leyland ... 😅 Thanks for showing !
almost 60 now remember working on these in my late teens a company i worked for had 6 of them but weren't 6 wheel drive .
That dump truck is a great bit of kit, amazing that it started so easily too.
Good Truck ! It puts a smile on Mr. Hewes face....so on mine👍
FODEN = GRUNT, the iveco is a fantastic find 👌
What a lovely CLEAN recovery vehicle Mr. Hewes well done that man.
I love it when a Plan comes together, well done Ted.
Magirus deutz It was a great truck. I had one of the 1997 V10 engines, but it was a great truck with a 6×6
First time seeing this channel, I’m amazed how powerful the tow truck is. That’s is a monster
Wait - what? It just started up? Awesome!
That is a magnificent addition Mr Hewes 👍
Thanks for another great vlog, Dave 👌🤟👍🤔🙏
Iveco is serieus stuff......very often underrated....👌
Despite the rain, it has done a decent job of washing away some of the mud and debris from the cellar, now just to pump that all out, keep up the good work
Love cold war era stuff. This is a beautiful piece of machinery.
Last of the magirus deutz,,what a truck.
The Tonka Truck is ALIIIVE! Bloody well done chaps, not only can you shift all the stuff you dug up, now you have a swimming pool for the summer you swanky buggers 👍🏻😁
Safety tip - always load over the back of the truck, just make sense. Great video gents.
I love how you are not afraid to buy most things that have trees growing out of them 👍
Greenpeace endorsed
She sounds awesome...❤😊
Gorgeous looking foden recovery unit.
what a tool that foden is! lovely bit of kit!
My father was Iraqi, he was a very Baghdad ! 🤣…. If you put ‘Mass’ in front of Iveco …and ck at the end it spells a bigger word 🤔 Maggie Deutz built under licence, Great old workhorses 👌🏻😎
Well aksually, the Magirus truck business folded into Iveco with a few others.
@@ramdynebix I bow to your superior mother trucking knowledge 🙏🏻👍🏻😉
I was expecting hours, if not days before that babe was going to move again. That was most impressive from the pair of you. 😊❤❤❤😊
Nice old truck. Engine sounds healthy.
Got to be said, that foden sounds lovely
Foden is a Beast! Makes it look effortless 💪🏻
I'm always impressed with the Foden and its sound, really does everything! Am also impressed with the IVECO that was standing there for how long? Yet it really started again with no issues. Great job you guys did as always having a much needed dump truck 🚚 instead of buying a new one and spending a fortune 👍👍👍👍
i was going to wait for the case of easy start to be sprayed into the intake, but started first time! Wow!
Amazing! A delapidated abandoned dump truck still functions!!!!
It Vibrates Everything Comes Off!!!!
i bet metal detecting would bring up a lot of interesting things on your property Joe and Dave.
It's amazing that even in a stair to the boiler room, they used a different glazed brick for the stairs instead of just cheap red brick like everywhere else. Attention to detail back then was amazing.
Saw this video first.
Had to go back to watch the previous one.
Just fascinating. Be careful with what you find, it will even more important to you as life progresses
That's insane that the old truck fired straight up and drove.
And welcome to England where it only rains on days that end in 'Y'.
Incredible the old girl fired right up!
Looking at the hole in the ground you have a good inspection pit 😂or the way things are going you could have your own Bunker and as others have said you have a great bunch of Lads around you which money can’t buy that looking forward to the next Episode
Not a babe. A darling when it first started up. I absolutely adore how you say things.
That Foden is an animal!! what a machine!!! didn't even break a sweat! however......that dump truck.....what a babe!!! can't believe that started that easily, don't make them like that anymore!! great vid as always fellas!!
