As soon as I saw that engine I said "It's a Polish WOLA". POLISH not RUSSIAN. During the numerous strikes and the Electricity cuts leading to 3 day week working in 1974 there were loads of those generators imported to keep industry working. They came in by the shipload to try to keep industry going. At the time I was working in a large Textile Mill in Lancashire and they managed to get hold of two sets. They were brilliant, never missed a beat and we ran them for 96 hours straight at a time to keep production going. I can't remember the power rating but we kept two six floor textiles mills running and no loss of production. The two we got were in full outdoor packs so completely weatherproof. We piped them direct to a 5000 gallon diesel tank and ran them on Red Diesel. They were placed at the back of the main boilerhouse and we ran the exhaust into the flue and straight up the main 140 ft brick chimney, so no silencers were needed. They did use a lot of engine oil, that was the only running issue we had. One of them did have a dodgy starter motor from new but they were also piped up for high pressure Air starting, so thats how we fired one of them up. We never did get a replacement starter delivered. The fact that they are/were governed to 1500rpm meant they were running sweet all the time, not like if they go into a tank I suppose. Being piped up for Air starting, I've since wondered if they could also have been for use in submarines, we'll never likely know.
So in true Mr Hewes style... Tanks for the memories. Cracking engines, just heavy on Oil.

Around 1976 when my father semi retired by buying a rural garage, it was a family affair. In those days we served petrol to the customers and we had a shop by the pumps.
One day my mother was on duty and a chap and his wife came in, driving a new Mercedes. As my mother was taking the chaps money out of the corner of her eye she saw the female empty the extremely full car cigarette ashtray by holding it out of the window and tipping it onto the forecourt.
The transaction was not complete and my mother said to the chap "Hold on a second" ... Walked out of the shop up behind the car, scooped up all the cigarette butts and tapped on te woman's window. The window cam down and my mother simply chucked the cigarette butts into the woman's lap saying "You takem them hoime madame, we don't want them thank you'
My mother retruned to the shop where the man was about to open his mouth ... when my father having seen it all fromt ge workshop arrived and advised him that it would be an extremely poor decision. 🙂

we stumbled across one of your videos, watched it, now we are totally hooked on what you do. I am Debbie and my hubbie is Dave he likes to restore steam engines, Dave and the rest of the club has taken a fowler t3 apart put in a new boiler and firebox and last week he made a new ashpan for it and it looks fantastic. They basically restored everything that needed doing kept the parts that were good to use and put it all back together. They have been out on a few short runs round. It went to Banbury Rally there is another one coming up soon. i love your channel I have subscribed and we are going over all of them BRILLIANT thanks look forward to the next one xxxxxxxxx🥰😃😃🥰

The idea of a T34 engine in a Centurion would be enough to give my father (served with Centurions in Germany) a 'Cadillac' arrest.

A testimony to your skills as mechanics in identifying and modifying that safety valve thingy. Can't help wondering, how many people 'flat-lined' in the hospital whilst waiting for this generator to start.

This will have had everything it ever needed and maintained without expense. Wouldn't have been used to run a hospital, it'll have been used to support the UPS on essential supply circuit for hospital. Bank of batteries would catch the drop in milliseconds and then the genny would fire up and equalize supply in about a minute or two. BT had loads of these type os set ups in telephone exchanges too.

The water cooled exhaust manifolds were to keep the engine room/house temp down otherwise your combustion air will get too hot and efficiency will drop. I run a pair of 15L 903s.

    • @Kaisan-vc8fw

Early T34 were warranted by the factory to have an engine life of around 175-195 hrs .. Most fo the early ones died before using their first tank of diesel from the factory.
At the hieght of their quality, the later T34 engines would sometimes last a whole 300 hrs before catastrophic failure. Sometimes.
