As soon as I saw that engine I said "It's a Polish WOLA". POLISH not RUSSIAN. During the numerous strikes and the Electricity cuts leading to 3 day week working in 1974 there were loads of those generators imported to keep industry working. They came in by the shipload to try to keep industry going. At the time I was working in a large Textile Mill in Lancashire and they managed to get hold of two sets. They were brilliant, never missed a beat and we ran them for 96 hours straight at a time to keep production going. I can't remember the power rating but we kept two six floor textiles mills running and no loss of production. The two we got were in full outdoor packs so completely weatherproof. We piped them direct to a 5000 gallon diesel tank and ran them on Red Diesel. They were placed at the back of the main boilerhouse and we ran the exhaust into the flue and straight up the main 140 ft brick chimney, so no silencers were needed. They did use a lot of engine oil, that was the only running issue we had. One of them did have a dodgy starter motor from new but they were also piped up for high pressure Air starting, so thats how we fired one of them up. We never did get a replacement starter delivered. The fact that they are/were governed to 1500rpm meant they were running sweet all the time, not like if they go into a tank I suppose. Being piped up for Air starting, I've since wondered if they could also have been for use in submarines, we'll never likely know. So in true Mr Hewes style... Tanks for the memories.
