This week I finally found the color that LBL is going to be … spending some time with the experts at CMax, I decided it was time to graduate to painting base/clear and by doing so, many more options opened up as a result including being able to add in pearls and metallics. I didn’t find it any harder painting the door panel, it just takes more coats and more time. Can’t wait to put what I’m expecting to be at least 10 on the truck before it’s all said and done - enjoy!

mark you either need to paint the base and clear in the same weekend or you'll have to sand the base before you clear it ... there's something called the "recoat window " and that's the amount of time that you can let pass and still be able to lay another coat down , same goes for primer but it sounds like you're dead set in priming one weekend and painting the next . which is fine that'll help you get it smooth but if you don't scuff between weekends you'll have paint flaking off same as if you didn't use an etch prime .
your best bet if you don't think you can do it all in one weekend is to do the cab and hood in base and clear one weekend then the bunk the next weekend. but don't let 7 days pass between base and clear without sanding
Hey Mark. You're done great on LBL! When are you going to do some work on Project PORKCHOP? thought I'd ask because I'm excited and looking forward to seeing it. Sorry if I'm sounding rude. Please and Thank you.
YES thats the paint mark the metalic flake will just shine like a shining star
good choice
Mark if you want mettalics you realize you can spray the blue you like and before you put final clear coats. You put actual flakes in a clearcoat and spray it over blue then 2-3 coats of clear. If you want the best job possible because you're spending a lot of money..Mark buy a couple quality guns..you need a primer gun and base clear gun. Spend your money on good equipment not princess auto /harbor freight quality crap..
you can't paint the color one weekend and wait 7 days to do clearcoat. You have a small window to top the basecoat. So you better read on the time you have between base and topping with clearcoat.
I second what the guy above said about air paint guns. I'm not a painter myself, but I worked with a guy that was really good at his job, and the compliment I made about his paint habilites he attributed to a specific model of a air paint gun (don't recall which one).
Definitely try the blue under the hood it will be worth the effort
You don't need but 2 coats of base. Your waisting paint after 2 coats of base. Add more clear coats. U.V. protection & depth will make it look awesome!
Be sure to mask off the engine and get your jambs open enough to get a good coat of paint. The jambs will be your Achilles heel of the paint job. I'm loving the content and your willingness to expand your talents. You've got this Mark!
How about start stockpiling your parts for the Pork chop ?
Then when you’re ready to start on it you’ll have most of it ready .
If clear is applied correctly it does not need to be wet sanded, orange peal or wave's in clear is a timing PROBLEM,read up and use a clock and thermometer, when you go into the factories you will not see a cut and buff department unless their in a repair area, air temp and Metal temp is key!!
SPRAY OUTS ARE THE ANSWER,RECORD THE TEMPS!! GOD BLESS YOUR EFFORTS!!!❤😊
Wow that really does pop in the sunlight i think you’ve got a winner mark.👍👍👍✝️✝️✝️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️😎
Montana , Big Sky Country the last best place ! Proud to say I live here ! 😁
Try an ozone generator in The Pork Chop Express. Although if there is an active source creating the smell (dead mouse for example) the smell will return/remain.
i used one on my moms house and vehicle after she passed away to get rid of the cigarette smell ... those things are amazing
Chevys and Dodge flake on the outside, Ford has the flake on the inside behind the wheel 😅
That blue looks awesome, gonna be a lot of work, but it's definitely gonna be worth it! Maybe a little thin white pinstriping in the corners would really make it pop. Up to you though. Also, why bother messing around with ropes off of the roof, when you have a perfectly good overhead crane?
Mornin Mark, I like the color, I think you are right you found the winner. I never got into doing any kind of body work and all though the fascination was there I never really had the opportunity to do any of it, but after watching you complete one and half way through the second I am very impressed with your ability not only for the base work but you are getting quite skilled at finishing as well, Good job Mark it's looking great. Sorry I didn't get to the Lesco truck show this year, I tried to get a golf cart or a side by side to use for the day but couldn't get one, just can't walk that far anymore. Hopefully get something for next year. Have a great week Mark, Say hello to Mrs. Twin stix for us.
Thursday morning and time to see what Mark is up to!
What have many of commenting here said about single stage vs two stage with metallic and metal flake paint? Glad you are going with two stage paint, it will look much better.
Love the new clear over basecoate Mark . That is the right colour for Little by Little . Once you have painted using clear over base you will never go back . Yes alot more work but you can do so much more . Have even seen guys put pearl in the first 2 coats of clear , makes the paint change colour in the sun . Like a blue looking straight at it then it gets a purple tinge when you look at a different spot .
Keep up the great work .
MARK,MARK,MARK, u should never paint something and start sanding another part at the same location. sanding dust will get on the painted part.. Painter# tip
I was thinking the same thing. Not sure why he doesn't put the truck outside to sand it , keep the dust out of the shop.
@@scottbennett7117one reason is unless he’s put it in .
The transmission is out of it .
Do they make a wand type sprayer or extended reach ?
great job on the panel mark, loved the vid , you old tease making us wait, you wana start stoking up for the chop mt ,that gals gona need some tlc m.
thank you.
Is lbl also a movie truck? Nice collection of trucks and cars. Keep on trucking
No, he just pulled it out if a field because it had twinsticks.
I fell in love with this channel when I was in school 2 years ago. I was just watching any truck videos I could find then I found Mark and fell in love with him building these trucks and I’ve never been disappointed with an episode.
1:55 That's awesome Mark! I think I left a comment mentioning how them old hot rodders would do that with the metallics on their old hot rods, adding their own custom blend of metal flake, which personally I wanted it to look like a funny car with extreme metalflake paint when I was gonna paint my 1967 Cougar a very similar color like you're gonna paint little by little. It's gonna look AWESOME. And wondering if anyone out there knows the history of what happened to the Hawaiian Tropic trailer that was in Smokey and the Bandit 2 when they're at the Lion Country Safari and Cannonball Run When Mel Tillis and Terry Bradshaw were tuning up the car during Arthur G Foyt's poem about the automobile. It is really cool looking and hand painted and I'm sure that's why Hal Needham had it in both movies. Another thing I remember when I was a trucker going up the East Coast from 2002 to 2005 was a rumor that Kenworth of Atlanta had the Snowman Bandit 2 Kenworth and trailer in the showroom. I was wondering what the truth was about that but maybe it was just an urban myth.
Glad you are going to base clear 👊🏼👍🏻🙌🏼 as others have said don’t do base color and clear on separate days 😮😮 spray a sealer coat, but color on top of that, then clear. Will be a very long day, you will be very tired. But it will be worth it 👍🏻👊🏼🙌🏼🔧🔧🔧
Beautiful colour! She’ll shine well wearing that
Keep up the good work 💪🏼
Rent a TALL scaffold set with wheels to span across the bunk..we do this and have someone pull you back slowly or rig a pulley up..that way you're close and can cover the whole top at once without any transition
Excellent work as always mark! One thing of advice i can offer. Rip the tags off your microfiber towels so they don't drag across your paint and leave micro scratches. Cheers 🍻 can't wait to see next week's episode!
Quick question for you b model cat guys. I’m only getting about 4 pounds of boost (manifold pressure) is my turbo toast? Little to no smoke coming out of the pipes and pump is stock but then up a little
I would try add more metal flake but in a blue colour aswell as the silver to make it completely different and all your choice mark, keep up the great work👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
The blue on the new gmc pickup trucks would look great. Also the honda accord blue is amazing.
the harley blue for 2024 is beautiful ... its called blue burst
Watch team S.T.E.A.M. all he paints is semi trucks. you can learn alot of tricks from this painter. Good luck.
My favorite blue was always Daytona Blue, but then I bought a '74 Datsun Z, and it is painted Nissan's Pacifiic Blue. Both are so beautiful, Pacific is just a little darker blue. Also, the way to completely get rid of that stink is to get a little ozone generator and stick it in the cab for a day. Air it out good afterwards and the stink will be completely gone. They use those generators to get fire stink out of clothes and upholstery in houses that have had a fire. It works better because the ozone gas goes everywhere and gets inside fabrics and foams. I would open that upper next time too if theres anything in it.
TAKE YOUR TIME..... Do it at your pace Mark enjoy yourself.... I'm not going anywhere I really enjoy this channel!!! - Gary
Mark..... Heres a tip about short strand fiberglass..... I learned it from Half Assed Kustoms..... when mixing your short strand fiberglass mix a little resin in to it.... it helps thin it out a bit to help it with spreadability and will make fast work of filling imperfections such as pin holes
Definitely nailed the colour. Truck is going to look Awesome
Hi mark should use light sky blue on your truck it looks good love seeing your shows
Hi Mark, I know when guys restore classic cars they block sand everywhere too make sure they have the body has no ripples or waves in it! They use something like a 24” 2x4” with sandpaper! They say if you what a good paint job make sure the prepping is done first, but I know you worked so long on this truck that you want it done. I’m not trying to tell you your job just what I know and some pointers which you get a lot of I’m sure.
you deserve a great credit marc, picking a great paint scheme for lbl little by little. it will be fan complete as you grow closer to the 100th episode.
If you take a wide mouth bottle, 1/2 full of vinegar. Then roll up some newspaper. Put in the bottle. Bottom to 6 inches above the mouth. Then cut the paper making a flower. Leave it for a few days. Mat2 bottles for a few day. The smell will transfer into the paper and vinegar. Even works in a freezer that was full of rotten meat.
Mark , Use your priming as sort of a dry run for painting you will have a good ideal for positioning of everything .....
Hey Mark I’ve been watching the past couple of episodes and I personally think the bus glass up front chefs kiss 🤘🏻😍 but as far as the rear and side windows I’d look into smoked glass harder it’s 100% dot legal and it will give you the tinted window effect on the whole piece of glass!

To toss a wrench at you, have you looked at Dark Quasar Blue Metallic from GM?
Mark live the channel. We are do much alike . I always have multiple projects on the go. My day job is my side job ( small engine repair), my 08 silverado, my wife's 04 camery, plus the landscaping of the property keeping the house together. Man, I'm tired just listing the items, lol.
Having straight continuous arm is especially cruical when you’re doing heavy metallics and pearl or else it’s horrible and will be entirely evident
That color is just right with white fenders...
Mark u can do this , I believe in u 😊, been watching u since day one and fyi the color u picked is what I thought before I saw it , was the perfect color for LBL
Damn that blue will make LBL shine and look amazing under the sun.
I'd say just paint the insides of the hood and fenders just flat black, that way the blue on the outside will pop even more.
Also paint other areas that won't see could also go with flat black
The big thing with B/C is to remember that with the basecoat you aren't trying to build material thickness.
You just need to cover the surface completely and evenly. You will get the build with the clear.
If you spray any single stage paint, or clear coat correctly, the paint is mixed correctly with the right reducer
for the temperature, and the gun is set correctly, you don't have to cut and buff the paint, but this is
stuff that takes experience. I have literally sprayed a couple thousand gallons of material, and my paint
always lays down like glass. I can't remember the last time I actually wet sanded and buffed a paint job...
If you get dark spots of metallic in the basecoat, you can cross coat it and that will help even it out.
It's certainly not ideal, but it does work.
Hello, & thanku 4 explanation of how " 🍊 orange- peel," happens in the 1st place
Great job Mark love the color if you got it a trucker brought it.
Hi Mark & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Mark & Friends Randy
It's a really nice color. The metallic will be a lot more noticeable when you actually paint the truck
because you will have large areas of color and a lot of different angles and contours,
and obviously the chrome and polished aluminum will really help too...
When you are spraying the clearcoat, instead of looking at the surface straight on, try looking at the
surface from the side, at least when you first start spraying. It's actually a good idea no matter what
you are spraying, but you will be able to see how the material is laying down a lot better, and see if you
need to adjust your speed or if the material is coming out dry. It can save you a lot of work after you are done painting.
Hopefully this helps. I'm not very good at explaining things, and I know you are getting overloaded with advice from a lot of people.
You will figure it out... It's just paint.
The base in Base/clear is fragile, as there is no hardener in it. But adding hardener/activator to the base will make it more durable, but still not as durable as single stage.
I would paint it with Polyurethane for maximum durability..
Good job Mark I can't wait when you start the pork chop Express and finishing the bandit car ty for a other video
Dual stage is definitely the way to go if you have the room to fully enclose your vehicle while painting. Like laquer in the old days, if you get a bit of dust or a bug in the clear, you can sand and buff it out and everything will look fantastic. Like with all painting projects, preparation is 95% of your finished product. Spend the extra time on sanding and priming. Don't start thinking that the color coat and or clear will cover for poor surface prep.
You have a winner Mark!! That really pops in the sun!!
Mark
Take the time to pull the hood. It will give you easy access to paint inside.
Love the color Mark. Are you going to ceramic coat LBL when it’s complete? I have used the Carpro brand in the past and have had phenomenal results. Easy to apply and it adds a layer of protection. It also makes it very easy to keep it looking fresh and clean.
Can’t wait to see the paint on the truck!
If I can offer one piece of advice for success. Have a professional teach you how to set your spray gun. That will give you the best chance of having uniform metallic and minimal orange peel.
Well Mark that blue color really does look good, I think that is really going to make Little by Little pop out in the sunshine, nice choice.
GM has a really good blue called Vector Blue metallic.
Its very deep but it shines so good in the sun
Hey friend if you paint the truck sliver before your main color it will make it a little deeper blue. More base coat and three coats of clear will make it sparkle and give you a glass finish on your clear.
Hi mark, you don’t have to paint the whole truck at the same time, you could paint the sleeper, cab and hood at different times. It’s a lot of work to paint everything at once. You could also paint the roof caps first on the cab and sleeper and then cover them up and paint the sides a different day, that will help with not leaning on a wet panel to paint the roof.
In regards to painting the roof of the sleeper, could you not attach a grab pole like the ford pickups have on the tailgate to the platform step. You can hold onto it so you can stabilize yourself while painting the roof. Just a thought
Another blue color that little by little would look good in is garter blue you have done just a beautiful job on LBL have been watching since the early days of the channel. I remember the episode when you got him to start for the first time!
hey mark as a body and paint guy the one thing i do after im done with the color i like to spray a dry coat over the job so the flake sits on the top not get covered with color
YES THATS THE COLOR THAT IS BEAUTIFUL..................GOD BLESS.
Too many projects? Let’s raffle some off! 😂😂
Cut the door skin into business card sizes and sign them, put a hole in them to make them keychains?
What do you think about leaving the center strip on the hood as a polished metal finish ?
You really need to invest in an exhaust fan for your shop!
Try legendary blue if it’s not enough sparkle for you
Love the LBL project, would the paint under the hood need to be heat resistant from the motor heat?
That blue is beautiful i love it great job i agree paint under the hood but leave under fenders back cause paint will chip from rocks I would think lol it look good either way
Base clear you are gonna have to do in one day or if you have to do it in 2 days you’re gonna have to scuff the base coat with a scotchbright pad so that the clear will adhere to the base paint just another tip for you
Once the test panel has had a week to harden up try wet sanding it, it’ll level the clear out then buff it up, difference is unreal. 👍🏻
why don't you install a barn fan in the wall it would help with painting and exhaust
Hey mark cover up the wheels so they don't get covered with paint or primer
These detail vids are awesome mark it show how much time love blood sweat and tears have really been put into the amazing project I can't wait to see LBL painted and all the chrome back on that ol girl and also woukd love to see the switches on the inside colored matched in blue
Paint colour reminds me of blue on sabaru rally car great video mark
I like the color. Also i pretty sure that LBL is still my favorite.
Mark most professional truck painters remove the hood and set it on a flat cart or two on the grill and can walk around and paint the hood off the truck
You should really take the hood off and place the sleeper on the floor. Would be a heck of a lot easier and the only climbing you need to do will be is the top of the cab and sleeper.
Mark if you have the spray gun set with the wide fan two coats of base paint and two coats of clearcoat if you wait 5 to 10 min between the coats its done leave it in the heat
once you paint it leave it 20 mins put the clearcoat on and your done
Superb colour, fantastic choice
Looking good mark I believe that color will look good on the truck the metallic flake will really make the ol girl will look like a bute clark
Would taking the hood off of truck to paint make it easier?
I feel like I would paint the cab and the sleeper separate days at least the clear. That seems like too much area for a novice to lay down and not have dry spots or a ton of runs trying to keep it wet.
heeey Mark, i recently had an idea, well, not an Idea per se, more of a suggestion really, buuut, if you could swap the engines, in Bandit 2 and Project Pork Chop, would you do it? or would you leave them as is? i know it sounds like a Big project, but, im just asking, would you do it, or not?
That’s the blue Mark looks great.
You are doing a awesome job 🎉keep at it
That blue is definitely the proper blue
Ozone machine will kill all that odor and you can rent them
I think that is the color for sure brother keep up the good work on lbl can't wait to see it done I would paint the inside of the hood as well they look good when they are done
What a hell of a color for LBL Mark I like it
If it's got rats nests in it, you'll never get the smell out till its all out of there.
You are right, you have a winner for paint.
That paint looks a lot better for sure!
Nice color choice! That is going to look nice on the truck!
Hi Mark would it not be easier for you to take the hood off.
