Thanks Dr. Klaper. I am surprised you did not mention dehydration; most people are dehydrated because of their diet of junk food, animal products and processed dry food.

I'd add to this wonderful advice to be careful what products you use to remove eye make up because that can cause dry eye too. I discovered this by accident. My eyes were so red and dry, and the special eye drops I got were not helping. My eyes got dryer and redder each day. They were painful, so one night I decided to use coconut oil to remove my eye makeup, and to my surprise, they instantly felt much better. I kept using it, and the redness/dry disappeared completely. The eye makeup remover I was using contained detergent, which was the cause of the problem. It had never bothered me before, but suddenly it did. So, check the ingredients in your make up remover. It may be the culprit.

I had severe dry eye in my twenties. Taking DHA helped a lot!

Great information, Dr. Klaper. Thank you! I live in a dry climate (Colorado), and suspect that sometimes the ducts get clogged, and by using warm compresses for 2-3 days, it loosens the ducts and my eyes are normal again for weeks or months. A wise optometrist once advised this, as it is a common problem in very dry climates.

I never had dry eyes until I had cataract surgery, afterward I'd wake up feeling like I had chalk in my eyes. Eyedrops helped but were full of preservatives and chemicals, and very pricey for my meager income. I did a little research and experimenting and for years now I've been making my own for pennies with sterile saline and a few drops of glycerin. I use upon waking and I'm good for the day. (and can still afford healthy produce!)

Blepharitis can also be a common cause of dry eyes and extremely frustrating. The eye gel at night definitely helps with lubrication. During the day, drinking plenty of water and eating a good amount of flaxseeds helps considerably.

I've been eating WFPB for 20 years. For the past decade or so, I've been getting dry eye in the middle of the night (only) each night. I apply Bion Tears eye drops and that seems to help a great deal. I've been taking Dr. Fuhrman's vitamins and also an algae omega DHA/EPA supplement for years, but that doesn't seem to have any special effect.
