15 years of telling all my doctors and eye specialists that my eyes are dry and irritated, all I got was prescriptions of freaking expensive artificial tear drops which does nothing than 10 mins relief. And here I am watching this video from 10 years ago feeling like a fool under the stupid medical system
Why don't doctors just tell us that we have a vitamin A deficiency? I had dry eyes for years until I found out that it was all due to malnourishment. I started eating eggs again after 18 years, but I made sure they were pastured grass-fed organic eggs with organic butter and everything that was organic that was high in Vitamin A and incorporating more organic carrots, dod liver oil liver, and cheese in my diet. The Kale and the collard greens although weren't a true vitamin A, they were at least a pre-vitamin A that converted to an active form in my body. The real culprit was that I was insulin resistant that affected my gallbladder which became sluggish because of all the bad foods I was eating and my gallbladder wasn't producing enough bile to breakdown the fat-soluble nutrients from the food I was eating regardless of the quality of food. Now my dry eyes are gone. I started really reading the back of the stevia to make sure it had no added ingredients with the worst culprit being maltodextrin. I didn't realize that not all stevia is true stevia and the kind I was consuming was worse than sugar. I would've been better off with pure cane sugar than the fake stevia I was buying. I had no idea that maltodextrin was in my large bag of stevia for baking. I really have to read the label because that extremely high level of sugar was pulling out my vitamins and minerals from my body. It's very refreshing to hear information from a doctor that talks about what may be lacking in the diet, you're a breath of fresh air. Thank you.
Karla Agee-Seldon. Thank you for pointing out the matter of maltodextrin! I’m pre-diabetic and it seems to be in a lot of foodstuffs which is not good for me, like sweeteners. I’m going to stop using them straight away. Again thank you.
I really appreciate those who made this video possible, and the great presentation that this ophthalmologist gave. It was easy to listen to and I didn't get bored out of my tree. I had been watching some short videos from others giving ideas on how they treated their dry and gritty eyes. My own doctor simply suggested drops and rinsing my eyes out with a saline solution. My dad had an enormous problem with his eyes in the last 20 years of his life: he died 10 years ago. The doctors of the time probably didn't know what you know. Unfortunately it appears your average GP should be passing patients on to those who do know. But is this knowledge specific to Penn Medicine or is it widely known among ophthalmologists?

Recently diagnosed with Blepharitis and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction at age 29. I've been doing a cleaning, scrub, warm compress, and hypochlorous acid regimen, but I still have itchy eyelids and blocked glands. Hopefully I can get it to a comfortable point and manage it.
Excellent lecture. I suffer from dry eyes due to cornea abrasion and my doctor failed to diagnose it for years! I find it very difficult to open my eyes in the morning it can take up to 5 minutes and a lot of drops. I'm in my 50s and know this horrible disease can only be managed not cured. There's very little information out there even amongst professionals so thank you !
You are an angel sent from God, lady! A LITERAL answer to my prayers!! I feel like there's going to be an end to my suffering some where in the near future.
Good video. I have dry eyes it's very painful almost blind now in left eye, and light sensitive. I have preservative free eye drops. Pain every day agony most of the time. Pain goes down my neck. It started following left eye graft 1990-91. I wish I never had it.
Excellent Doctor and information. Thank you. Women are often told or treated like they are "crazy"and its 2022 (when it comes to health related issues esp as they age) This information you presented is priceless to me,regards.
The doctor talked about using Tea Tree Oil about 21:37. I want to point out this is very dangerous to use around the eyes and you must take great care. I for one got a very serious abrassion on my eye from it.
Correct you are. I like Dr. Sircus recommendation to use magnesium chloride drops but diluted with clean and sterilized water 15 to 1. The Ancient Minerals brand of Magnesium Oil (aka magnesium chloride as magnesium chloride is a bit slippery) is a good option. I use non-Tea-Tree Oil options. I like to use a boric acid eye wash (instructions can be found on the internet although a pharmacist will probably tell you never to do this).
I was told people who have had Lasix in the past may have had nerves in the eyes severed by the laser. Specifically the nerves that send signals to your brain to produce tears when the nerves sense your eye is dry.
I had dry eyes for years , tried various medicines wasn't much help. However ever since my husband adviced me to put on safety goggles to block wind, plus wearing a face mask, the combined effect was instantly felt. the loss of tear due to evaporation was gretly reduced
An excellent informative presentation from Dr Massaro-Giordano. She explains the condition and treatment options in a very concise and clear manner and has given me great ideas for when I next speak to my ophthalmologist about my dry eye issues.
So far I have been to 3 seperate O.D.s (in the past month) looking for help. 2 told me "Dry eye- nothing we can do. Use a lot of eye drops & get a humidifier ". 1 told me my corneas were burnt and gave me antibiotic drops (which she called steroids). My question is this : do I need an opthamologist instead? How do I find a Dr like you who will actually try to help me? This video has given me hope, but has also made me angry as heck knowing there was more that could have been done!
try a cold compress on the back of your neck.a pinched nerve.or inflammed muscles.holding back blood flow to your eyes causing your eyes to become dry,...

Hi, Did you try any of the treatments? I have had barrage laser for both eyes(to heal tiny holes in my eyes) a year ago. Later I noticed a little strain in my eyes and so I was prescribed some tear drops to cure dryness. But, Those tear drops worsen the condition. My eyes now became sensitive to light, and I couldn't watch mobile phone/TV without a burning sensation. I can barely sit in an Air conditioned room comfortably for an hour.
She gave a list of factors and treatment alongwith diet and nutrition. Keeping the gut clean is so important to avoid deficiencies of B vitamins that can cause dry eyes and inflammation too especially in people with hypothyroidism.
I just had ocular migrane yesterday eye doctor wants to see me tomorrow I had lasik surgery 4 years ago Today I have small floaters but I been working too hard on the computer without blue light glasses I just ordered them today well see
Wow! Thank you so much for making this video. I have an excellent doctor and he has talked about lots of things that I heard here. Before finding this doctor, I went to another doctor that was like the speaker described that her mother went to. They just didn't care . They were considered a dry eye specialist yet they only wanted to sell me a very expensive machine. Thankfully I found my new doctor and he has been patient and knowledgeable about all these things in the video. It was great being able to listen and pause the video. It's hard to take in all this information during a regular office visit.
What an interesting lecture - I agree wholeheartedly with what other people have said - if only our regular doctors understood this condition better. There are so many potential reasons why people have this condition and just packing us off with eye drops doesn't solve the problem. I believe my sudden dry eye is perhaps hormone related and this Prof. highlighted it for me. Thank you very much :)
Fantastic presentation! Very informative and I have taken notes to present to my ophthalmologist to, at the least, receive a comprehensive examination to determine the cause of my tear dysfunction syndrome in my right eye. Strange that it isn't in my left eye, too.
Cold air can cause your airways to narrow. This can increase the amount of mucus you produce and make it harder for you to breathe. Cold, dry air can also irritate your airways and worsen symptoms like wheezing, coughing and breathlessness
My dry eyes respond (temporarily) to warm compresses. When this happens, my eyes become oily and the lashes stick together. After quite some time of warm moist cloth on the eye, I can get some temporary relief. I believe that the problem I am having is rooted in the tear ducts themselves. It seems like they get clogged and cause the dry eye discomfort and pain. In the past, steroids have helped, but no longer even though I suspect the steroids merely allowed the eyes to calm and normalize, not actually treat. I have seen a cornea specialist and he did not see any conjunctivitis, but he did not do any of the dry eye testing you discuss. If, as I suspect, I have clogging oil glands, can I do anything myself beyond using a warm compress? I have begun taking fish oil that I had used in the past. The problem had been intermittent, but now I cannot get to to go away. Also, if it matters, this never happened to me until I had a sever viral infection in 2018 in my right eye and the current issues are only in that eye. Also, can you recommend a dry eye specialist in Las Vegas. You sound like you really know what you are talking about. I will try to use the heated gel eye mask with a washcloth today. Sorry for the hodgepodge format of this letter.
This is so informative. I have had eye issues for 6 months and still not sorted I am on another referral . I bet if I saw this specialist they would have it sorted in no time!
My daughter and I have elhers danlos syndrome and therefore have dry eyes. She also has a problem sleeping with her eyes not shutting properly during sleep. I'm on bipap and that can cause pink eye from the air leakage of the mask. Interesting article. Thank you so much.
Have you tried "sleep tight" tape for sealing eyelids that don't close and creating a "moisture chamber"? Glad cling wrap also works. ;) The dry eye guy on RUclips has a video about this.
This is very helpful. I tried all the advice given in this video. It was helpful. I would also like to add that changing my diet to include lots of Vit A also helped me drastically.
Excellent Lecture!!!! So well presented and very clear. Thank you for making this possible. Gives me new hope for the medical industry since I have been misdiagnosed twice.
Thank you so very much for this information. This condition was starting to drive me crazy. It affects my daily life and is very frustrating. Ill be sure to see an opthamologist to get to the bottom of whats causing this.
I have the most severe the of dry eye for 25 plus years. I’m on just about everything. I see a dry eye specialist at UCSD in San Diego. Can you tell me more about oral anti inflammatory meds? Part of my issues are daytime and nighttime Lagopthalmous and post RK, PRK and cataract surgery. I have incomplete blinking due to damaged obicularis muscles. I live in San Diego.
Thank you for sharing. Creating awareness and clarifing misunderstanding is fundamental. Your research work and that of your Department is indeed appreciated, Thank you!
Helpful video. Regarding rosacea, is there any work being done to learn more about why posterior blepharitis develops and how to reduce it at the source/origin point? It strikes me that many of the treatments are reactive (dealing with downstream symptoms) and not addressing the root cause. As a person with ocular rosacea and GERD, I cannot use antibiotic treatments due to negative and serious side effects, and Omega 3 pills cause GERD. I can see at the end of the video that the doctor recognized the need for more research into the pathogenesis. Thanks.
It would amazingly helpful if this doctor or someone could recommend a good brand of fish oil/omega 3 supplement, as well as the towelettes used to clean the eyes after the warm compress. Otherwise this is extremely informative, thank you very much.
Gavin Dsouza yes, make sure to research the type you need to get for the eyes. But, yes it does help with eye lashes and also ice cubes .... depends one what type you have . But, the castor oil is very helpful for moisture
Always a pleasure and a valuable tool to watch thorough explanations that our doctors never have close to the time to explain. Thank You! I am going in today for a OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) test.
Can you please tell which ocular pathologies/ conditions (directly or indirectly) linked to the increased permeability of the ocular surface other than dry eye, eye allergies and inflammation.
A brilliantly informative lecture. The presentation is excellent and very easy to listen to. May I also say, what a very beautiful woman she is. She is very lucky and should thank her parents for her looks.
Inflammation along the edge of your eyelids can keep oil glands from secreting oil into your tears. Your doctor may recommend antibiotics to reduce inflammation. Antibiotics for dry eyes are usually taken by mouth, though some are used as eyedrops or ointments.

This video contains excellent information and helpful treatments

do you get any tears while crying or cutting onion?
Dear Doctor, You have a spectacularly pleasing speaking voice!! My eyes are pretty valuable!! Thanks for your help. 👁 👁
Amazing is the Education she provided for dry eyes. I want to go to her clinic . I Am From New York

Hi. How you feeling now. Is it reversed

Clear educational presentation. Easy to follow. Easy to understand. So helpful. This lecture is gold. Thank you so much
My daughter and I have elhers danlos syndrome and therefore have dry eyes. She also has a problem sleeping with her eyes not shutting properly during sleep. I'm on bipap and that can cause pink eye from the air leakage of the mask. Interesting article. Thank you so much.
I have the same problem and wear cpap, it's so frustrating.
For MGD , Use tea tree oil wipes.
U will get relief soon
I feel fortunate to have her as my doctor. She really is wonderful. I'm actually able to wear my hard contact lenses again!

Part of my issues are daytime and nighttime Lagopthalmous and post RK, PRK and cataract surgery. I have incomplete blinking due to damaged obicularis muscles. I live in San Diego.
I have major problem to drive at night . All lights glare so bad i cannot see. New glasses with nonglare coating
Would be great to add time stamps
Heyy
how r u now... Please reply 🥺🥺

Wat about castor oil ? Does it help ?
Gavin Dsouza yes, make sure to research the type you need to get for the eyes. But, yes it does help with eye lashes and also ice cubes .... depends one what type you have . But, the castor oil is very helpful for moisture
Master Blaster yes Castor oil helps!
Lynsey Brennan How do you use it?
Always a pleasure and a valuable tool to watch thorough explanations that our doctors never have close to the time to explain.
Thank You! I am going in today for a OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) test.
What an awesome presentation !!!!
Good Morning Miss Professor .I have floaters in my eye .Can dry eyed us the caused for this problem
Good presentation. Difference between a good Doctor and a lousy one. Thank you.
Thank you...I learned a lot about dry eyes.
I request all Dr. Plz research on dry eye permanent treatment
