Oh Lyle, you left the planet too soon. I watched you tens and tens of times in concerts over the years, and waited in vain after the The Way Up tour for your return. Your mastery of gorgeous compositions like this heart warming one, your technique on keyboards have left me breathless and although I never met you, I feel the loss of your friendship. Thank you for all the wonderful years of sharing your love with the world. You are the best.
❤💕🎈💖🧩🤗🎈🌺🌿
Well said.

❤❤❤❤❤😢💔
Absolut richtig.
RIP Lyle. One of the greatest pianists. Such a sad loss
C'est le poete de la musique
Hear hear
Hard to believe that musicians like this walk the earth. Such beautiful expression. Thank you Lyle, Pat, Steve, Dan et al.
Some of them don't walk the earth anymore
@@obhuicoksetyaetse1 No one lives forever. Lyle Mays is one of many that will be deeply missed. But, there's a new generation of virtuoso talent coming up, inspired by those that came before.
one of the most beautiful songs composed by Lyle....and played together with Pat it's fantastic😍
Being 65 now, I am unwillingly getting used to losing my musical heros. But Lyle ... although I so appreciate and love the brilliant music he composed and played in his lifetime, I feel such loss at what future musical journeys we will not take with him. Even when he was front and center, he was gracefully behind the scenes. I have always hoped for a Wichita 2 collaboration. Guess I'll just have to use my imagination. Thank you, Lyle
63 here. I remember being introduced to the Pat Metheny Group back in the late 70s by a friend. As we toked the bong, I remember thinking “wow! This guitarist is amazing!” But then, my attention quickly was stolen by the keyboardist. It was quite the struggle trying to focus on both of them while being distracted by the insane rhythm work. All were so haunting & compelling I was nearly pulled apart in all directions. I was hooked forever! Lyle & Pat will never die.
My God, never heard exactly this version before. It brought tears to my eyes. Pat is great, but Lyle was a profound genius. Hope there's keyboards in Heaven so Lyle can brighten up the skye.
Stig Madsen isn’t this version just awe inspiring!
This phenomenal performance had the same effect on me, Stig. Just tugs at the heartstrings. Now, every time the sun comes out, it's like Lyle's playing up there.
I confirm every word you wrote ! His playing touches deeply.......
He was, indeed, "close to home" here... now he is home, and I'd bet the version upstairs will be even better! Yet another thing to look forward to eventually! :)
Sure ,there are keybords in Heaven and the kind of keybords that Mr Mays ( God bless his soul) will play forever nonstop without anyone getting bored or irritated, l hope we can meet him there .
Cried real tears like a big baby while driving to see family Thanksgiving Day 2025. Song went right through me. 3:29
i'm a piano player, mays is the deepest piano player i ever heared in my life, this song is the proof that metaphisic exists...
Mee too!!!
One of the best piano solos ever played. Let yourself listen and there will come a passage, a run, a swell of sound of such beauty that it will leave you suddenly feeling as if you will burst with emotion. I just turned 83, and am so glad I heard this before it was too late.
How can you not love Bill Evans, Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Bud Powell, Thelonius Monk, Brad Mehldau, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ahmad Jamal, Duke, Fats Waller, etc. etc.
.... but, I don't think anyone can touch this for it's sheer narrative quality, and the amazing story line that it delivers - the balance and tastefulness are simply stunning.
Lyle Mays is the Architect of Sound.
RIP, Lyle Mays. His music touched me deeply.
Thank God this was captured , I’ve played it over and over , it just lifts my mood .
Lyle mays wow😳 what a pianist!
His soul is speaking. This brings tears.
I was there! Montreal 1982. One of the best show ever!
I was there too! Annual trip to the jazz festival to see Metheny. Great memories
the last 'section,' when metheny starts playing again along with the pianist, those few notes of the guitar with the chords of the piano, makes me feel like i am getting closer and closer to a place of love and warmth, to my 'home,' it's so profound
I agree. Funny thing is maybe that feeling was why they changed the title. It was originally called "Mars." :-)
Gave me an out of body experience and it was beautiful
You are a very good listener :)
Ogni volta che sento gli accordi combinati di Lyle & Pat torno indietro nel tempo..profumi di case montane i silenzi nelle vie.
Home is where there's always soup on the stove, and someone who loves you ....
I first met these guys (Pat, Lyle, Mark, and Danny) in Boston ‘77. We helped them bring their equipment into the small club. We chatted before the club filled up. They were ALL humble and amazingly talented. Each member was outstanding on their instrument. Lyle was special …
Lyle"s body might have left us, but his spirit is always here along with the incredible music he left us.
Love and miss Lyle. Close to Home touches the soul. What a perfect composition.
RIP Lyle - thank you for so much beautiful music that has profoundly touched my life.
Lyle Mays' ultimately lyrical and glimmering playing style is truly missed
Pat Metheny was a lucky man to have Lyle Mays in his band. Lyle was Pat's left and right side
I agree
Can't find the interview again, but Pat said Lyle could fill in the places he couldn't get with the guitar.
Not wanting to rag om Pat, because his music has been some of the most influencal music in my life, but after Lyle stopped playing with him, it kinda descended, from Orchestrion and forward. Most likely Pat feels this too. He was really lucky to have Lyle. Lyle's contribution to PMG was the glue for the soul.
Just learned that Lyle passed on earlier this year. Very saddened. RIP Lyle. Your work has lifted me out of the doldrums a million times over the years...
The most beautiful music ever composed!
My god, how I feel good when I hear Lyle. Still alive for me.
Mays was a genius both as composer and player.
Lyle such a sad loss, another great musician joins the mighty band of musical talent somewhere in the heavens.RIP.
Lyle, we're gonna miss you. R.I.P.
Che bravo Lyle.. la tua anima riposa in pace e la tua musica e’ immortale
Arguably one of the greatest musicians of all time, no one can capture the unique phrasing and beautiful sound that you produced.
Lucky to be alive when He was! RIP, Lyle
This is how I will always remember this great artist.
me too....
When hearing this i have to tell :
Lyle Mays is musically and technically an extraordinary genius - same hight with Bach, Mozart and Easyliy all the living ones.
Rest in Peace Lyle Mays, thank you for the music
Man
....that dude could bring ivory back to life!
RIP Lyle Mays. Brilliant musician and human being. Thanks.
Lyle Mays reaches moments of unendurable beauty. |He exposes the joy of yearning.
so well put
Thank you Maria! And you're right about the Bill Evans school. Lyle Mays is taking it in the best direction it can go. All of the most evolved artists (including Bach) started with a language that preceded them and penetrated it deeply enough, and injected it enough with their own sensibility, that it continues grow.
Yes, I'm at about 5:40 as I read your comment, and he's there!
You got it! His music restores my faith in the human race.
Well stated my friend 😀
Lyle is a bloody genius
Was. RIP.
@@UKISOCIETY Is.
RIP Lyle. Thank you for your amazing music.
Lyle and Pat are truly a gift together and singly. The comment made that Lyle is the "deepest" player has merit. I think Lyle is the true heir to Bill Evans, who mapped out the sonisphere long before Lyle came into his own. Don't forget Bill!
I agree their styles distinctive think of Lyle as a Rachmaninoff of jazz and Bill Evans as a mix of Brahms and Debussy sonehow
RIP Lyle. Your beautiful music has touched us.
This is the most beautiful song I have heard today. Unreal.
Great musician, great composer, great pianist.
...and great person
We will miss you Lyle, you are going to be missed very much Rest in Peace my brother!!! I will miss your playing the key board my brother very much.
R I.P Lyle, this is the first video of Pat Metheny that I ever saw back in the late 80's and it remains my favourite ❤️
Wow i'm flashing back to 1982 My first Daughter was 2 years old Wow just a great tune
1st time i've seen this video!!!
Lyle is a superstar in his own right!!
What a heartbreaking loss. He was one of a kind. No one was as wonderful and talented. He and Pat were perfect together. His solo album was awesome. Gone too soon💔
RIP Lyle. There will never be another like you.
As falls Wichita, so rises Lyle Mays to heaven.
What a moment in time! 1982 - PMG at the beginning of the heights - jazz w/rock sensibility. Rhythm and melody collided to wash sounds of cleansing for our souls. This restores humanity imo. Giants and genius playing simply really as in pats melody then the journey with Lyle through his cinematic vistas. Thank you Lord that you let me be hear to have this occur in my lifetime…
We will miss you dear Lyle. Thanks for the Music!
Lyle's compositions always seemed to bring a bliss-filled piece of musical heaven down to us poor mortals. They gave our ears and hearts a sense of wonderment and calming peace. Now, his genius is writing sambas for sunbeams and romantic rhythms for the rain. Goodnight & God Bless You, Lyle Mays. Your music will always live on in our hearts...
My favorite Lyle solo ever. It moves my arm hairs to rise and gives me butterflies in the tummy. Brilliant!
I use to think that the San Lorenzo solo in Travels was the best .... until I heard this one. I feel that there are some similarities, but this is just amazing. RIP Lyle.
R.I.P. The GREAT ONE and only Lyle Mays. You're Musical Emotion will LIVE FOREVER....God be with you.
I deeply miss the Pat Matheny Group. Rest in heaven, Lyle.
These guys are amazing. I can go on a journey anywhere in the universe with their music. Just close your eyes and you will understand. A journey that you will not want to end.
He is my favorite pianist
R.I.P. Lyle Mayes .
Such beauty gone from this world .
Your music will live on with us .
Великолепный клавишник, очень тонко чувствует музыку. Браво!!!
a ti ivo znal ili sluchaino nashol?
This is what brilliance was brought to the earth to do.
Guys, don't try to find out this man's set up...Cause he's got so much equipment, you'll think he's prparing to talk to the aliens.....hahahhaha....I've been following him ever since I was 8yrs old...he's a pure genious that will go down to history as THE keyboard pioneer...
WOW!! A blast from the past. Thank you Lord! For the last 2 or 3 weeks I kept getting flashes of a muscian playing two keyboards. It was Lyle Mays playing in my head! I will always love Pat Metheny Group with Lyle Mays. Thank you!!
Bellissima versione di uno dei brani più belli di Lyle. Assolo di piano strepitoso.
pat and lyle were the Lennon McCartney of jazz,,so much emotions so great speechless
Lyle, I feel as if you were my friend, as so may feel just by listening to you. Thank you from the bottom of my soul. You are so missed.
Been listening to jazz for some 60 years; only in recent months have I tuned into Lyle's captivating, musical brilliance. He makes the piano sing in a sustaining way that I've seldom if ever heard, truly unique! Most grateful - Ron Tilden
The real magic is that both Pat and Lyle play lyrically/melodically and from the soul. It's a big WOW every time I have seen or heard them over the years.
I was blessed to see PMG.. beacon theater (first circle) then radio city (still life talking) and on ward.. then 2 of lyle's solo albums.. great.. could not wait to hear pat/lyle collaborations.. thru the years..
You are very lucky. I saw Pat twice but never with Lyle😢
This music is from the other world. We have the privilege to look and listen a genius a sensitive person like Lyle and the glorious guitar man like Pat. Thanks for this again.
The Piano school of Bill Evans is alive & well in Lyle Mays
I agree, sister!
Not anymore. :(
We lost Lyle way too soon..
RIP Lyle. Will stay in my soul till I meet you in heaven. But still I cannot let you go. What shall I do?
Listen to a lot of his works. I mean, A LOT!
Listening to this takes my mind away from the goddamn illness. I will survive, I'm floating .Thank you LM. x
We love you Mr Beethoveen of jazz(R.I.P)❤❤❤❤❤
R.I.P Maestro. Your music is absolute beauty !
A genius. Thank you Lyle Mays for your music. RIP Legend
Just wipes me out - Has anyone else got into the Lyle Mays album? When I heard it when I was younger there was no turning back! Listened to it every day for years.
Hi Patrick Johnson, thanks to you I have now discovered this album. I've obviously been a long term fan of Pat Metheny (and First Light!), but had not previously come across this one. I can't find a CD copy for any reasonable cost, so for now I've bought the lower quality MP3 version from Amazon and have been listening (very nice). You also seem to have got me into EST - I just bought two of their CDs today! I think at the moment though that I prefer your version of 'Elevation of Love'. Happy New Year to you and yours - pass it on to the 'old man'!
It's so good! Can't believe you hadn't heard it before Conrad. You won't be able to stop now mate!
yes me too. i listened to lyle and pat from 1985 till 1990 almost every day, still have most albums, rediscovering them now! bill frisell is also one of those giants!
Definitely dude. The Lyle Mays album was such a massive influence on me when I was younger (And still now really!) Bill Frisell's playing on it is so unique (As his playing is on everything!) Just takes you to another world
No one sounded like Chick, or Monk or Bill Evans orrrrrr Lyle. Whenever I first heard him on the Watercolors album all I wanted to know was, who's that piano player. Never stopped listening 50 years later.
You can tell Lyle thought long and hard about the perfect ratio between classical and jazz chops in this epic solo. He nailed the balance as he weaves in and out between European and American, straight and swing, rigid and loose. He expressed all that was in him. You may not personally believe in a God but after listening to this you must believe in Lyle.
I do believe in God and I very strongly believe Lyle was given a Godly talent.
Totally Beautiful. Something Sacred.
Best piano player ever! R.I.P. Lyle Mays.
Musica feta a cop de cor !! Grans pat &Lyle
Pat Metheny é maravilhoso!!
Mas sem dúvida, Lyle Mays é a alma desse trabalho.
So lovely
No sabía que lyle había muerto,Que mala noticia la de esta noche.no se que decir.agradezco a todos los que hicieron tan maravillosos comentarios.me uno a ustedes
Music without words, but yet can express the deepest emotions! That's what Pat Metheny can do..."Close to Home" does just that (Lyle Mays composition), yearning to a time of innocence and being safe and at peace... Watching this again after so many years, brings it all back...
'a time of innocence and being safe and at peace...' if only today's world could be like that - will it ever be? One day perhaps - if enough of us want it to be.
Still so much beautiful music in this ugly world, and this angel has gone, what a pity....
The maestro from Pat Metheny group. A great pianist and composer!
a true maestro, so sad by his early death
absolutely epic pianist
Thanks Lyle and Pat,
I love you guys ... for ever.
Lyle Mays is absolutely one of the of the most brilliant persons in music.
Por Dios, cuánta magia! Qué músicos, cuánto sentimiento, entrega, belleza! Grande Pat, sos un gran artista, y Lyle, bueno, puro arte, retórica, técnica, gusto, entrega, magia. No puedo dejar de verlos y escucharlos. I.M.P.R.E.S.I.O.N.A.N.T.E.
We are still not aware of what the loss of Lyle represents in the music world, no just methinian. Brilliant, brilliant, master of modal progressions, technical control of dynamics on another planet. We miss you. Close to Home is a manifesto.
Here's the math: Lyle Mays = genius. Pat Metheny Group = the best.
This video has fairly clear audio though needing a bit of EQ, and iffy video, but the musical talent comes through strong.
Every must so listen to this song because I am not able to do without.
Uma das melhores músicas que eu já ouvi nessa vida !!!
Lyle Mays....Pat Metheny....many thanks for your music....
R.I.P. Lyle. Thanks for all the years of brilliance!
PAT & LYLE /NANA FOREVER
Lyle Mays was perfect!
Pat Metheny, he was my first concert, autumn of 81, a friend of mine, Brian Baum, won the tix off of the local radio station and we went that evening, Pat gave us 3 encores that night, was the begining of my smooth jazz listening, and now for 30+ years i have loved him and his work, i hope Pat and the guys make many more albums and go on many more tours, no matter who or what im listening to i always seem to go back to the Metheny files as i call it, lol, my fave song is Slip Away!!!
