I am having a very difficult time finding the words to express the tremendous depth of Lyle's talent. He was truly a gift to this world. There is no one who can come close to his spirit. Thank you, Lyle, for leaving us such a magnificent legacy to lift our souls. Rest easy. You did good. :)
This was on his self titled album, and I got to see him on the tour he did after he released it, in a small college theater. His soulful compositions and performance were magnificent. He had such an emotional touch on every keystroke that seemed like a direct manifestation of his spirit, breathing through each note. The world misses him.
He is eternal , one day everyone of us will get into this, we are all eternal, in this space time dimension he was in constant communication with the fluid cloud of the Universe wich is ONE, he had this enormous gift of genius , something coming from the ALWAYS and EVERYWHERE, which this actual world is missing but everything will be revealed, we can only thank this music MASTER for putting us in direct conjunction with eternity... Thank you Lyle...

Jason, I just came across your post from 2 years ago and you perfectly aligned two musicians that equated Lyle Mays playing. I was doing a bit of a deep dive on Pat & Lyle's music tonight and yes, a genius to be mourned.
The MOST Lyrical Pianist ever I think. ... His playing spoke every emotion he expressed almost in words. ... He and Metheny were a Perfect Match. .... Last Train Home is gonna make me cry now.
Never heard a player who could transport you like Lyle did. There just aren’t enough superlatives in our language to describe Lyles’ playing, composing skills and humility. RIP indeed.....
I’ve got stage 4 pancreatic cancer, diagnosed just in October. I’ve loved this composition for the past three or four years when I first heard it, and it is now ever so much closer to home as I suppose, barring successful results from chemo, so am I. RIP Lyle. ❤
All Lyle has to do is play a couple of bars and I'm back to reliving my life from the ages of 17 to 30 and like a flash, it's past..sooo many wonderful memories connected to his notes, ideas, sound and emotion..what a gift it is to have had his music lead me through life and to where I am now..love going back to re-listen when ever possible just to feel that feeling again..
Merci Lyle Mays, merci pour ce merveilleux voyage en ta compagnie, merci de toutes ses émotions partagées, tous ses concerts, ses nuits a vous écouter, merci du cadeau que vous nous avez fait. A bientôt...
A touch and feel like no one else. A master of the keyboards. A true genius at composition and performance. No one else quite like him... A real GIFT to jazz lovers.
Pat Metheny Group without Lyle is …. (Can’t descibe in words) - and this solo work of Lyle without a doubt, has emotionally driven me … I’m so moved.. thanks Lyle and RIP
We are still not aware of what the loss of Lyle represents in the music world, no just methinian. Brilliant, brilliant, master of modal progressions, technical control of dynamics on another planet. We miss you. Close to Home is a manifesto.

I hope you are with the FATHER GOD in Heaven, dear Lyle. You are one of the Most brilliant, talented, gifted musicians that we all have had the privilege of knowing just a little bit for a short time. I love you LYLE and hope to see you in Heaven one day with my Lord God Jesus Christ. IF you spent any time with ALEX ACUNA, you are in Heaven because he loves God and the Lord Jesus Christ. I know he loved you enough to spend time playing music with you and I'm sure he shared the truth about Jesus with you. God bless everyone who comes to listen to this song and sheds tears because of how beautiful this music is and how you miss Lyle and wish he was still here. His music is and don't let it die. IF you don't know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and friend, please get to know HIM now because HE loves you and wants you to spend eternity with HIM.
Rest in peace Lyle. Thank you for all of the beautiful and moving music over so many years. I was blessed to see you and Pat in concert a few times and I will never forget those concerts. May your music live on for many more people to enjoy and be inspired. You deserved to be much more well known as one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time.
Lyle is not usually counted among Evans, Corea, Tyner, Jarrett, and Hancock, but I think there is no doubt he is just as influential. There is clearly a Mays' style that young pianists learn to emulate. One of 20th century's greatest jazz pianists. RIP Lyle and thank you for all your beautiful moments you gave us.
Every time that I listen to this I get a little moist in the eyes. This is the essence of Lyle 100%. So incredibly emotionally intelligent, so perfect in every way. As a pianist and composer Lyle’s influence on me personally was profound. I miss him dearly and his music continues to inspire me every day. I can listen to this forever!
My Sincere Condolences to all Family, Friends and Fans of this most incredible Human Being. Rest In Peace Brother Lyle Mays. Thank you for all of the wonderful musical memories. Peace also to Pat Metheny!
There are some people who don’t think about their actions, yet they probably never thought about anything else but their actions. Lyle and Pat never did anything wrong but played some of the best music ever. Even if they didn’t do anything different, there music is still some of the best EVER.
I remember the moment I feel in love with jazz.. I was in college at a record shop & I heard San Lorenzo for the first time.. the gentle soliloquy of Lyle was like sunlight dancing on Spring rain... I was mesmerized & feel in love with his unique style...never looked back.. thanks for all the memories..

It is impossible for me to realize that Lyle Mays is no longer with us. Thank God we have recordings and videos of his brilliance. Rest in peace........
I've seen Pat Metheny "live in concert" 5 times in the "post" Lyle Mays era - each time immensely rewarding, but OH - what I would give to have SEEN and HEARD Lyle and Pat on stage together. So saddened to learn of the passing of Lyle Mays! As we know, he was a stellar keyboard virtuoso and composer. His sound was always heartfelt, gentle, and his keyboard approach possessed an inherent cinematic beauty that truly transported listeners to an ineffable sonic dimension! His solo work and his collaborations with Pat Metheny ("The Falcon and The Snowman" soundtrack; "Offramp", the list is endless) are for many of us, the soundtracks to our lives. Thank you for your immense talents, Mr. Lyle Mays. God bless you for your musical gifts and God bless your family! Your artistry will be forever cherished and tremendously appreciated!🎹🎼🎶🎵
God rest your beautiful soul, Lyle. Yours and Pat's musical landscapes have been the soundtrack of my life since my mid-teens. And the journey continues 💓💓💓

I have grandchildren in high school who study music and know Lyles music, I introduced them to his recordings and it's amazing that three generations now all enjoy what we know to be timeless masterpieces..
Saw Pat and Lyle in 1981 in Kansas City while majoring in architecture at KU in Lawrence, KS and that was it. Graduated, moved to NY and enrolled at SUNY, Old Westbury campus in Long Island to study jazz under Prof. Dr. Ken McIntyre. Lyle, questo brano mi emoziona il cuore.
My goodness! One of the greats. Gone too soon. I miss him every day.
Debussy + Bill Evans = Lyle Mays. My heart and senses mourn.
Early Jarrett too. More than Jarrett himself.
@JM - T/y the Debussy call, heard the name of course but can't say Classical composers even a wee bit knowledgeable about. Evans of course ...
