I’ve been a musician all my life, since I was 5 years old and I’m 68 years old now. This is the most beautiful piece of music ever created in my lifetime, in my opinion. These guys are the musicians musicians.
I'm 54, musician since I was 8, at this point in my life I am feeling this song might just as well be exactly what you said..., so far. Also, the only time I saw Pat live in '93, "The Truth will always Be" just killed me.
An extratrrestial in the piano and keyboards, an angel singing and Mozart in the guitar... God bless them all, gone and alive for some of the best music ever done.
The angel singing is Pedro Aznar. Still puzzles me that he did not play that much bass with the PMG. The guy by then had already been a rockstar in Argentina with Serú Girán and a very respected multiinstrumentalist and songwriter already in his early 20's. He still plays and sounds as good as ever BTW. And Pat too. I would love to see a Metheny / Aznar reunion .
@@mejsjalv I agree, he was already (and still is) a great bass player. Maybe because Steve Rodby also played acoustic bass and was (after Lyle) very close to Pat.
I’m almost 63 now and I remember hearing the day I fell in love with Pat and Lyle in the 70’s. San Lorenzo transformed me and moves me to joyful and settled places unknown and still does as this song. This song is also one of my all time favorite pieces of music. How does he/they do this? I’ve been a pro musician for decades. This is so healing and transforming and on another level. Thank you Pat & Lyle for helping shape and maintain my heart! RIP Lyle. I miss you everyday.
San Lorenzo and this one are my favorite pieces of theirs. Particularly the live version in Berlin 1978 for San Lorenzo. The piano solo in that utterly brilliant! I've never heard its equal!
I Love this song, it takes me to a place and puts me in a space that's untouchable. Thank you for that.Much love Lyle you will be truly missed. Lady T From the Chi. Town
For me the best group of all times! Pat, Lyle, Steve, Pedro Aznar, Paul means excess of talent, creativity, technique, music sensitivity and innovation. Thank you guys, you've made my life better.
I'm a classical musician but have been devoted to jazz fusion since the late 70's when I first heard it and Pat Metheny was my first introduction to it. From that point on, the ongoing love affair I've had with his and their music together has spurred me on to see them live in concert numerous times here in Toronto since. I've had this clip stored in my browser for years and every time I watch it I get the same chills I've always had. The climactic build of this incredible piece of music right up until the end, when I feel like I'm falling off a cliff and utterly breathless, is pure Metheny magic. Those dancing parrots at the beginning - in time - are just the best! This video is the finest example of their very special group dynamic. Situated far away from each other, yet as tuned in with each other as they could ever be. Each and every musician here, eyes closed, has an otherworldly investment in what they're doing. It's always phenomenal to see Lyle with his magical fingers playing here again. RIP, what a loss. We have Lyle's supreme talent forever in our hearts.
I dont mind repeating this piece a thousand times.Eleasion, some of the scooting are common to the red indians which are spiritual in nature. The piano is time suspension, the off beat clapping is sooo ecstatic .
Pat Metheny and company had the gift of finding the right tempo, melody , and curiosity of what makes a song progress forward to boundaries that can make you cry or feel the energy waiting to be released...this song is in my honest opinion is iconic. REST IN PEACE LYLE MAYS...!
I can't seem to run across this and start listening to it without watching the whole thing. I don't even try to delude myself into thinking I can stop it anyore... I've heard this probably several thousand times ever since the album first came out. Every note perfection, brilliance, love, wonder, celebration, joy!
I absolutely love this band.! THe songs make me cry, laugh, grieve, soar with light and sometimes make me feel totally helpless. WE listen to this group so much. Can't ever imagine my life without this music in it. The song I most identify with is " If I could", we have a handicaped son, and when ever I hear it, it is me saying to him. " If I could, oh I wish I could. Thank you all for such intense, wonderful music!
I agree, lastdays. Personally came across this tune about a year ago, and am sad I never got the chance to see PMG live in the day. Lyle's playing on this is fucking amazing! It's all thought out and transfers to his fingers -- never a wasted note...just sublime. I am further blown away that Pat and Lyle's artistry is still appreciated by a relative few. I believe this tune, and many of their others will go down as some of the best compositions of our time.
F-- me this song is amazing any one else notice that almost everyone in this video is playing with their eyes shut and playing from their hearts. Truly breathtaking and amazing to hear first time, tenth time and one hundredth time.
I listen to unusual music in my classroom while the students are coming in and I always get the question , MR. Why do you listen to this stuff? MY ANSWER IS BECAUSE IT'S complex and interesting. As proof I play the intro to this song and ask, "What do you hear?" answer clapping. I ask is the clapping pattern complex or simple? The students always say simple, so I respond I will play the intro 3 more times and if anyone can keep the beat on the 4th time I will give them $100. I''ve never had to pay, but my real love of this song is LYle on keyboard. Been following him and PAT SINCE a friend made me listen to them back in 1984 - best friend ever. First heard this song at a concert in Seattle back in the early 90's and loved it immediately.
Thank you. I saw PMG play this at the Fox Theater in Atlanta many years ago. I’ve never seen an audience applaud louder or longer. Phenomenal performance. Imaginary Day tour. Cheers!
This song absolutely moves me to tears. So hauntingly beautiful and sad at the same time. Lyle mays was such an absolute treasure, he is greatly missed along with old friend Tom Sheehan, their piano technician.

crazy to think it's 30 years on from this, and even longer from the first Pat & Lyle I ever heard (American Garage), that era is gone unfortunately, but will never be forgotten for those of us who know it, this music is a blessing, a sacrament of a kind, a touchstone and a mirror of our lives

I had this on VHS. Often replayed this version, surprised the tape didn't snap. I consider this to be Lyle's finest recorded solo. The definition of perfection.
Lyle seemed to be able to come up with such interesting variations on his solo as compared to what they put down on the record. I'll bet he thoroughly enjoyed himself during those 'improvisations' at each of their stops. RIP Lyle, you are dearly missed.
This is the song that introduced me to Pat and the crew, miss Lyle so much we will never see the likes of Pat and Lyle again. Life is too too short, show love to your love ones and others while you still have the little time left.
I wish an interviewer would ask Metheny to speak of his legacy from Brazilian music which comes through so clearly here both in the 22/8 rhythm and in the texture - brings me directly to the old masters Gismonti, Horta, Tiso and of course Naná, among so many others!

That’s a lot to say, but this piece is just one of so many compositions before and after which PMG has put out. perfection musical high ground and joyous music to heart! 👍😊❤️
It may be unrepeatable, but it's been my dream to sing this with him, and I really hope I can pull it off. He's been the biggest inspiration as a musician throughout my life, and I don't think anyone else can inspire me as much has he has. I would say a close second is Celine Dion, Enya and Josh Groban. I want to sing with them all, but I know only God's grace and lots of hard, ongoing work will make it possible.

I saw them in Red Bank New Jersey in a really nice small venue. Incredible. It's nice to see all the wonderful comments and how Pat, Lyle and the band have touched so many people. Lyle had to be one of the most creative and talented keyboard players ever to grace this earth.
PMGOne of the best jazz fusion collaboration bands of All time. For God's sake- if given the opportunity-Go see them Live!!!!!!! I know I did and back again and again and again!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sem palavras para essa música. Uma obra-prima
Loved you Lyle, Pat and you were so cohesive , interlaced, your piano scores. R.I.P. Lyle.
