    Saw Pat perform this live, outdoors, back in the mid 80s. I was in my 20s. 61 now, and I still not only remember that concert, but everything my life was back then is linked to it. His music captures an entire time in my life.

    Coming up on 40 years old next month. I just heard this for the first time and felt a connection with those of you who wrote comments about how you were listening to it 40 years ago. The gift of this music will keep journeying on thru time, even to those being born today.

    Subliminal, transcendental, eclectic and euphoric. I've seen Pay Metheny perform one time, and that was when "The Way Up" was released, PHEW! He came on stage and the rest of the group and played for more than an HOUR! And when they ended that session he said; "we just did some of our latest recording, The Way Up. As a matter of fact, we did the whole album." HUH? WHO DOES THAT? Then they jammed for about another 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Man what a performance! My wife was utterly amazed, eyes and mouth wide open,saying how are they doing all that, all the sounds? Offramp was my first album of his. But I have plenty more now! Didn't mean to bore y'all but we're in the same groove!

      Jazz musicians love to make little inside jokes with the titles of their works. So here goes: Jimmy Webb wrote a song "Wichita Lineman" that went gold (or platinum even) for the recording by Glen Campbell. The jazz nerds like Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays noticed the unanswered questions, like "Wichita County", "Texas or Kansas", "Telephony or Electric Power" and gave us this little send-up for amusement. The music they created is compelling but the joke remains. I hope this helps you grin about it. Cheers!

  • @zeyyarlan8306
    @zeyyarlan8306 Месяц назад +1

    The final section of this music (starting from 14:10) evoked pain in me even on the first listen. It is as if someone from the spiritual realm is observing the children playing outside, who have just recently arrived here and are happily discovering the earth. Perhaps it is a human individuality departing from material existence, who once felt this same innocent enthusiasm for the world, but, having aged and laid down their weary body, is now beginning their journey toward the infinite once again.
    Ennek a zenének az utolsó (14:10-től kezdődő) szakasza már az első meghallgatása során is fájdalmat váltott ki bennem. Mintha valaki a szellemi világból szemlélné a szabadban játszó gyermekeket, akik csak nemrég érkeztek ide, s boldogan fedezik fel maguknak a földet. Talán éppen egy az anyagi létből távozó emberi individualitás, aki egykor maga is ilyen ártatlanul lelkesedett ez iránt a világ iránt, de megöregedett és fáradt testét lerakva ismét elindult a végtelen felé.

    I bought the LP As Falls Wichita,So Falls Wichita Falls back in 1981 when it was first released and its one of my most treasured Albums and I eventually bought the CD. I felt so fortunate for this Album to enter into my life. Its an uplifting and equally tragic feeling of love and abandonment all thrown together in such a beautiful Album. They toured the U.K. and I was lucky enough to see them both perform this track amongs others and the title track from the Album...I still have my concert ticket inside the LP. I've beeen a Pat Metheny fan ever since.
    I found out about the passing of Lyle Mays here in RUclips a few years ago. He died aged 66 in Feb 2020 and was the co founder of the The Pat Metheny Group. An incredible Pianist.His synthesizers gave depth and color to the ensemble’s sound. He soloed gracefully on grand piano. And he helped write many staples of the group’s repertoire. There used to be a beautiful video in youTube to this track, a view from the window of a train travelling somewhere in North America in Winter and it fitted the emotional senses that this track can bring. I have looked for it many times since but it may have been removed.

      A friend of mine went to Berklee College of Music in Boston during some of the years Pat Metheny studied and taught there. At 18, Metheny was the youngest college level instructor in Boston.
      Gary Burton convinced him to come to Berklee and the faculty was so blown away by his talent, he immediately became a teacher.
      Kills me that he was playing in a lot of small bars in the Boston area at that time and I had no clue...never saw him until his first concert hall gig at the now gone Donnelly Memorial Theater on Mass Ave near Berklee.
