  • My tribute to Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, made from my heart.
Mi tributo a Pat Metheny y Lyle Mays
    Y si no encuentras esperanza,

Fantastic. And yes, Lyle Mays was an outstanding musician. Looking at the complete list of NEA Jazz Masters awards, I am surprised that Lyle Mays was not bestowed that honor. Lyle contributed to Pat's music so much in composition, arrangements and keyboard playing that the NEA should take note, honoring him posthumously.

Sometimes we never really truly appreciate the contributions of the greatest musicians until they have returned home to Source Energy. I always knew that he was present, a member of Pat's group, a creator on a plane of his own, but only now that he has decided to leave us with his absence can I truly appreciate his corpus that he has left us to ponder, to love, to appreciate. This song has been played by me everyday at least 20-30 times and I still can't get enough of it. I have listened to versions by Uwe Karcher,
Dr. Guy Shkolnik, Alex Sill on guitar seemingly holding back tears as he played this song, by himself and with Pat' group. I had the pleasure to see him perform at the Greek Theatre in around 1994-1995, the entire show was nothing less than Heavenly. You are missed only in person but we have your catalog to keep us "Close to You".

@@carlosmandersonjr6528 I've never heard that about Lyle. A guy on some jazz forums was in line at a coffee shop in LA and looks up and Lyle Mays is there. Apparently he expressed resentment at not being paid enough. Regardless, it's no exaggeration for me to say that it's one of my very top dreams in life to a.) have another PMG release with Lyle Mays and b.) to see the greatest hits of PMG performed live with Lyle at the Greek Theater in LA. I wouldn't sleep for a week, man! Have you seen some of the covers on YT of PMG music by the Italian guys? Absolutely incredible! Michele Fischietti is one and Michele Fischietti is the other (who ended up touring with Pat because of the videos).

This is at least the 3rd recording, all different, of this cosmically beautiful Lyle Mays composition. It is of quantum depth and as lyrical as Bill Evans at his more contemplative pieces. I love Lyle and Pat as the right and left hand of genius, often most pleasurable when working at the same intensity, eyes and ears tuned to the same frequency. I personally owe them a lot...

It's a Lyle composition which was released on his first, self-titled, album as "Close to Home" (with Bill Frisell on guitar). Lyle's solo recordings are stunning - "Lyle Mays", "Street Dreams", "Fictionary" and "Solo - improvisations for expanded piano". Every one is a work of pure beauty.

Last time my son and I saw Pat was in 2019 at the Admiral in Bremerton WA. Unfortunately, Lyle wasn't performing with him. It was great but something missing. We saw Steely Dan right after Walter Becker passed and Donald Fagen was great but something was missing there as well. Seen PMG many times over the past 40 years. My 19 year old daughter passed away in 2001 and the only thing she asked me to bring to the hospital were her copies of Imaginary Day and Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert. Makes it hard for me to listen to them.

Without reason, I think I become to know why the titile for this song is Mars. And when I am close to home and Mars, I am more feeling alone. How do I get along with this life-long friend? The intro @2:37 in piano solo, I feel like to become to face the Mars without anxiety and pain. Peacefully, I go back to my home embracing the cause of all my inner painful memories.
Also with respect and thankfulness to Lyle and the Hjosh, I am going my way as always.

Beautiful video and very creative. It complements Lyle's masterpiece well. I have buried two dear and loved pets to this piece of music, which is one of the most emotionally stirring and enchanting pieces of music of the past forty years or so - your visuals are very strong and descriptive. I wonder if you can say which album this is from, as I think it is a concert and not a studio recording. It's not from Lyle's original album. Please let me know? Thank you from one passionate enthusiast of musical magic to another!

You label this as a "tribute" (and it is BEAUTIFUL...), but is this your video placed to a recording, or did you also mix the music? There is reverb on Lyle's piano, vocals and maybe sounds/music from (I think) "As Falls Wichita So Falls Wichita Falls", etc. THANK YOU for producing and uploading this. "Close to Home" is hitting me near this second anniversary of Lyle passing (there are many versions on youtube).

PMG performed this song live in the late 70s and early 80s before Lyle finally recorded a studio version on his first solo album in 1986 where "All music is composed by Lyle Mays". Milton later wrote lyrics to Lyle's melody and renamed the song 'Quem é você?' which appears on Milton's 1994 live album 'O Planeta Blue na Estrada do Sol'. Milton's version is very beautiful too...
