@@DirtyD07 Cameron and Troy built the cage on Leroy, and were building the jet version of Mullet before that project got scrapped. Take that and the fact that Justin Swanstrom knows both of em, and I’m pretty sure ol’ Cleet and the fellas knew what kind of work came out of Cameron’s shop…
A lot of the issue with Mullet came down to the chassis getting profoundly dogfucked to turn it into a rocket car and then Kevin having to try and undo the fuckery to get it back to something workable. Was always bound to have problems with consistent traction and setup at the track because of all of that. Kevin worked miracles to get it as far as it got, but they definitely hit the ceiling of what was going to be possible as it was.
The work Kevin did to mullet is why the car went that fast with all the restrictions bound to the chasis design, now that the car is being properly built to go real fast this will become a whole new animal
Make a removable camper shell that you can put on for big tire, or remove and use the existing tonneau cover for small tire. Lund used to make one for the El Camino.
Stretch the rear quarters up just enough to clear the big tires so it's not really noticeable. Cut em horizontally and add what's needed to clear the big tires
If your old school they started this chassis build for a ls and jet engine combo. Cleet had the jet engine to go and they talked him out of it. To fast to dangerous now were doing 250mph in 5 sec. How time flies.

Something to know./remember with Mullet is that they moved the rear wheels back to support the jet engine that was supposed to mount in the back. If you shift the wheels back forward, that may help with the configuration

I don't think cleetus would torture the current big block with a 300 foot charge pipe if he was planning on keeping it in mullet. Being they are doung the work to make the chassis right...I bet we will see smx again

Cut the quarter panel at that body line and add 2-3" strip may not need the humps for big tires. Truck quarter side panel, Danny looks great he needs some of those 90's ski glasses.

Don’t love the idea of tubs sticking out the rear deck or losing twin turbskis out the hood, however if speed is the priority, I believe this car is in the best hands it could be in! Hope you share all the broken chassis welds and broken parts you find from this thing running on the edge. Really glad Cleetus decided to have a chassis shop go to town on this. It seemed to be getting potentially dangerous and just less consistent. Love your content guys keep it coming and we’ll keep tuning in! Thanks
By the looks of the smoke coming out of the exhaust it looks like Cleetus did burn the exhaust valves up with that experiment that he did on his channel with mullet

I think you should see if you could raise Mullets Bed/Quarter panel up some. That way you don't have any tubs sticking up. Maybe its too much work but I thought I would throw that out there.
Shorten the wheelbase a few inches. With the rake of the QUARTER PANEL tops moving the axle forward a bit will add tire clearance. When opening up the wheelwells just extend em forward. Enough extra clearance? Have to measure. Also: if it looks goody with too much rear overhang, shortening the rear a couple inches might not be super noticeable Just throwing out some ideas I've had in my head ever since they first figured out the wheelbase wasnt optimal a couple years ago.
Quarter panel because the el'camino started out as a station wagon that they cut the top off of and capped the quarter panels. Heck, the footwell for the back seat is still there, just covered by a panel. On my 66 I line-x'd the footwell and made it into a cooler for car shows.

Hopefully he focuses on making Mullet a drag and drive build without worrying about fitting into other drag comps so much. He’s got better cars for just 1/8 and 1/4 mile races. With a proper chassis and big tires it would be nice to see a SMX back in it. Possibly even the steel front half back on it.
The only problem I have with cleetus/garret is that he keeps introducing me to absolute beauticians. A man only has so many hours in a day to watch amazing content like this. Can't wait to see what you guys are gonna do with our treasured mullet!
I don't know. Since it's Mullet, it needs to be business in the front, party in the back so turbos mounted on the bed just behind the rear window would be cool.
the de-cleetification has begun haha, I actually like this strategy, cleet builds a car and has fun for a few years figuring it out then hands it over to these guys and they completely sort it out, before long Cleet has a fleet of absolute race machines that we all love. I love Mullet before and I'm going to love Mullet 3.0.

Kevin did a great job with Mullet. Especially considering it was initially supposed to be a jet car. When your foundation isn't right, youre always going to be making sacrifices.
It's funny they ditched the SMX because the car couldn't handle it and now it getting redone could handle something even more extreme than that engine.
I think there’s also the aspect of not wanting to run too many serious high maintenance motors - the guys have got enough on their plate running cars at events without having to worry about valve lash and so on with every car.
@@TheGalantHamburger from what Steve stated on his video, they should check valve lash but shouldn't have to adjust valve lash. if there is an adjustment needed, something is wrong.
Cleetus is going to want to win raceweek events, so he will end up pushing the engine anyway, unless he ends up in a class that doesn't need the kind of speed or times mullet can do. Even the SM BBC needs the proper attention and I thought they were running aluminum rods in it to get the faster times......maybe that was just when it had an LS engine. It seems like they could use another mechanic/tech person to help stay on top of inspecting and maintaining these cars while at events.
I think this is what Mullet needs, a full rebuild, Kevin and the Mc farland racing group have done an amazing job with the car over the years but it is time to see the mullet fly

You are right, Cameron. According to the official GM catalog that panel on an El Camino is called a quarter panel.
In Australia 🇦🇺 1/4 panel.
Bed side on pickups is a separate panel which is NOT connected to the forward body. So this is a quarter panel since it blends into the roof pillar.

It's not the same chassis that was used for the rocket car. They scrapped that car due to not being able to save it.

I’m calling it a quarter panel, all el Caminos are based on the wagon version of cars: Impalas, Chevelles, and Monte Carlos, hence it too is a car.

@@TheGalantHamburger from what Steve stated on his video, they should check valve lash but shouldn't have to adjust valve lash. if there is an adjustment needed, something is wrong.
Cleetus is going to want to win raceweek events, so he will end up pushing the engine anyway, unless he ends up in a class that doesn't need the kind of speed or times mullet can do. Even the SM BBC needs the proper attention and I thought they were running aluminum rods in it to get the faster times......maybe that was just when it had an LS engine. It seems like they could use another mechanic/tech person to help stay on top of inspecting and maintaining these cars while at events.

I think this is what Mullet needs, a full rebuild, Kevin and the Mc farland racing group have done an amazing job with the car over the years but it is time to see the mullet fly

I was thinking the same thing. Kevin is cringing as he watches this. I really don't see the purpose. it would be cheaper to build another mullet than to just use the skin from this one.
