I was lucky enough to be at this show. I recall being amazed by Mark Ledford and David Blamires. In the midst of such great music, they were doing so much so well.
I've wondered HOW can anyone compose for those vocals? Pat (and most 'lyrical' musicians) use intruments like voices, but Pat uses human voices for an instrument that doesn't exist. These blow me away. Same with "Over the Treetops" though those vocals aren't as complicated as these.
@@Fulmer1000 I think is on the DVD (or a separate interview) when Pat says he didn't know if they could do this live - I forget why, but he got the musicians who could do it and they did a great job. He doesn't have his usual horizontal striped shirt here.

I've liked Andreas ever since he was introduced to America many years ago and have purchased most all of his themed induced Cds. But I must interject that Pat has meant so much more to my listening pleasure over that past 45 to 46 yrs. He is one of the few artist that his music is timeless and cannot be dated. Just as fresh sounding today as it was back then, even more so now with technology such as You Tube along with sound quality enhancements...God bless all the wonderful musicians that have played with PMG and other Pat Metheny projects. And God bless you as well.🙏
I’ll never stop regretting that I discovered Pat 10 years too late to see this group live. I’ve seen him play his quartet a few times and as wonderful as that is I bet the whole band hits much differently
Pat is in a class by himself. The fact that he can mold and morph the music of a different culture (Secret Story 1992), into this jazz thing and sounding good to the ears is unbelievable.
The most rowdy 7/4 tune ever! A little "First Circle" clap rhythm thrown in courtesy of Mr. Wertico = absolute brilliance. Post break we're treated to 6/8 and a couple of key modulations for good measure!
Can't believe this album is 25 yrs old already. My god!! Anyway, I started listening to Pat in the mid-70's while in college and have probably seen him 20 times thru the years at many different venues in America. One such time was when i was traveling from AZ to IL and i routed myself to be in Denver when he was there. 9/29/92. Not having a tic, i bought an extra from a woman outside and proceeded to enjoy this incredible Secret Story concert. But it was this song that was most amazing. When the singers first started singing, about half of us immediately stood straight up applauding....like a doctor testing your reflexes, it was something that happened without having the time to think about it. Truely amazing moment and something I had never seen before nor after. Very moving and I'm sure one of those you had to be there happening but i wanted to share nevertheless. Thank you Pat!!

"yes, that is exactly what this is! and Thank God He gave us this!"
This live performance has an excitement that makes the original CD recording sound tame (relatively speaking). I never thought I would ever say that about any music.

Still life talking is not his first album, but you know that. I was impressed by his early works, Bright size life or Wichita falls (especially the tune It's for you, Metheny is already entirely in it), but this one (Secret story) is full of beautiful themes, Antonia, Always and forever... masterpieces. As a drummer, I find the most difficult is Letter from home, lot of odd time signatures, I work on it. In a few years I hope I will be able to stop counting on some tunes ! Paul Wertico is a great drummer, excellent musician, too bad he is not well known.
Love this album! Love this tune! Probably heard this album and this tune several dozen times throughout the years. NEVER seen it performed before, though. Until now! On RUclips! Let's just say that I was envisioning a whole different set of singers. (Never read the credits on the CD, now that I think about it.) Loved watching the TWO GUYS sing the melody! LOL! Lots of energy with this song. Thoroughly enjoyed the video (wish I was at the concert)!!
Glad you like it !!! and just for a little envy from you, I saw it live... twice, in NY in '92 and in Caracas in '93... and to finish it all, after the concert my pal Joaquín and I went to a jazz bar and 1/2 later almost the whole group came into the place and played till 3:30 in the morning. Jealous yet ? There was like only 20 people in the place, something like a private concert/party, we chat with all of them for almost 3 hours; and by Metheny's own words it was the last presentation after almost 3 years on the road with the Secret Story Tour, he said he was happy and sad at the same time. One of the greatest experience of my life. It was awesome. Mark Ledford RIP.
Jorge Luis Garcia and now PM doesn't go to jams any longer because of this RUclips thing! It's a pity to be sure! closest I got to that kind of experience was having Anjelique Kidjo's band show up to a gig of mine and jam with us for an hour past the last call!
Jorge Luis Garcia Boy do I envy you. In 1999 I was divorcing my 2nd wife and "Finding and Believing" and "Cathedral In A Suitcase" got me through. Believe it or not. I had never seen this performed until tonight...on RUclips. Astounding. I just saw Pat last weekend at the Thornton Winery in Temecula, California with his Unity Band (with my new wife...ha!!!). Not bad. But Pat came back for an encore and solo-ed for awhile and then got some backup from the guys plus Bruce Hornsby. I've seen Pat Metheny about 5 times all told. "The Way Up" Tour, the "Speaking of Now" Tour, the "Still Life (Talking) Tour, and couple more times. I never get enough bro. Really. **dappz**
I always envisioned a group of West African women in their ritual costumes handling the vocal chants. Just like on "Above The Treetops", my mind's eye sees 8 to 10 Cambodian girls vocalizing those mesmerizing chants. I guess from show to show it's not practical, so we appreciate David and Mark (RIP).
The ostinato is in 7/8 while the band plays in 6/8. But that's nothing compared to what is asked from the singers, I can't even imagine the work to memorise all these "words". What says the most about Metheny as a person and musician is that over the years there have been no scandals and no one has ever complained that he had a big ego and wanted all the glory for himself. The music reflects this expansiveness and is the richer for it.
So true. He is a very humble person. Took me a while to get used to this.. think I skipped it a few times when I got the CD, but now it's one of my favorite Metheny pieces. This is different from the studio as it has like "three levels" of guitar solo.. I thought it was winding down and then it takes off again. Jim Beard's piano solo is great.. dancing on the keys. I'd think is same piano Lyle used (shiny/European Steinway). Incredible composition and talented musicians/vocalists.
+1guitbox1 I was at this concert (i.e., the one in the video). They played a regular gig, and toward the end let us know that if we wanted to, we could stick around after -- whereupon played all the "Secret Story" tunes over again. They had to have been exhausted by the time it was over, but it was awesome.
It's too bad that more people haven't experienced Pat's absolute magic. He could any of the top guitar players ever. But he chose jazz and he compose all of this amazing sounds
Amicalement Guy
Been listening to this for years, one of my favorites, but I just stumbled across this video. I always thought the chanting was done by the Choir of the Cambodian Royal Palace, as they are credited on the album, and it sure sounds like Cambodian chanting to me. It blew my mind to see who was chanting on this video! What an incredible composition. Metheny is possibly the greatest jazz influence of the latter part of the 20th century, especially with all those he inspired at Berklee!

I'd think is same piano Lyle used (shiny/European Steinway). Incredible composition and talented musicians/vocalists.
Amazing composition..
i so wish i would've been at that concert ! my fav Pat Metheny album !!
+1guitbox1 I was at this concert (i.e., the one in the video). They played a regular gig, and toward the end let us know that if we wanted to, we could stick around after -- whereupon played all the "Secret Story" tunes over again. They had to have been exhausted by the time it was over, but it was awesome.
one of the best live album i own

So So Beautiful! I feel an homage to Jaco P. in this one.
My lfe is full of pat moments....
It's too bad that more people haven't experienced Pat's absolute magic. He could any of the top guitar players ever. But he chose jazz and he compose all of this amazing sounds
Amazing !! Thanks for sharing 💙
30 years ago and still jazzy 😎
Amicalement Guy
beautiful lyrics
a pure summer sunshine day in musics

Marvelous too Great! Are They Gods?
Been listening to this for years, one of my favorites, but I just stumbled across this video. I always thought the chanting was done by the Choir of the Cambodian Royal Palace, as they are credited on the album, and it sure sounds like Cambodian chanting to me. It blew my mind to see who was chanting on this video! What an incredible composition. Metheny is possibly the greatest jazz influence of the latter part of the 20th century, especially with all those he inspired at Berklee!
this is awesome!
IT IS !!!!!!!!
What a show!
from the first time I heard it, the number one. can't say why...
So sad I have never seen this LIVE. Iwas too young. It's the best album. I hope there will be a reprise tour
