I was at a Pat Metheny concert years ago and I heard 3 old guys, clearly musicians, talking, and one of them summed it up in one sentence; " such depth and emotion." 'Nuff said.
he is wonderful, you should listen to his early work with the argentinian group serú girán where he played the fretless bass, best bassist in latinoamerica!
Some of my earliest musical memories are of Pat and this song in particular. Some time ago when I was just 10 years old I stood in line for 2 hours at the Newport Jazz Festival to meet Pat. He had a look of shock, amazement, and happiness on his face when 10 year old me told him how much I truly loved his music, looked up to him and that I wanted to play jazz. He’s the coolest cat around.
I listened to this disk pretty much every morning with great coffee and bong hits and my cats. I always think the stuff with Lyle is more telepathic and transparent and I was lucky to see them at Sunken Garden for a great show. I love this music.
Can't even anymore count the times I've watched this YT. Its final 4-5 minutes NEVER failes to send me soaring & this after the rest of it before an almost indescribably wonderful musical journey leading up to. EVERYTHING about this video is pure bliss, the performace of course, but also the camera work capturing it & the sunshine-y day & audience's beautiful appreciation of what they are experiencing. T/y/v/m.
Break my heart PMG with Lyle was my first concert ever -- I was a little teenage piano player blown away by what I was hearing Got Lyle's autograph -- still have it
If you love rock you should love jazz. My boyfriend is a metalhead I showed this to him and he loved it!!❤❤❤ it’s all instruments speaking..just in different tongues!

Thank you very much, dear God to have created Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays . Two beams of light upon this Earth. We lost Mays, but please keep Metheny for a little longer. In a world populated with garbage music, these beams of light is what makes sense !
"Still Life (talking)" came out half-way through my freshman year of college (music school) and my friends and I listened to it at least once a day for a very long time. It's still one of my all-time favorite albums, and these two tunes are part of the reason for that.
Nothing like seeing these guys live. I feel privileged that I was able to to see them many times whenever they were in the east. Still catching Pat whenever I can.
In the early 70s Pat went to the University of Miami School of music. Two of his classmates were Steve Morse and Jaco Pastorius. Pat remains one of my favorite jazz guitarists and as mentioned below, his ability to compose complex pieces is amazing. He has a crisp, clean sound and I enjoy the way he uses excellent percussion musicians (with unique instruments). Something you rarely hear any longer.
Back in the day, I use to say Pat Metheny did not know how to make an album that wasn't Brilliant, Passionate and Original! After listening to (and watching) this magnificent concert, my mind has not changed to this day. Pure genius! He, Mays, Rodby, Wertigo, Aznar are all BRILLIANT on this piece! I only wish I were there to experience this concert in which he lifts you off your seat and takes you on a mesmerizing journey of intense and passionate musical joy! Magnificent!
Oh yes, I totally agree, Armando Marcal's percussion work was invaluable - didn't mean to slight him. His musical contribution was crucial to the originality and brilliancy of the the entire Group.
I love Aznar's vocals. I love Ledford and Blamires, but Aznar is my favorite. He uses the dynamics in his voice just like an instrument, which it is. The gentleness in his voice is perfect with the harmonics of Pat's guitar.
I keep coming back to this gig in particular. Pat's always joyful, but there's something extra this time, almost transcendental. The whole group are just so in sync it's beautiful. I still maintain it's the best performance of Third Wind they ever gave.

I've said something similar on other videos, but it bears repeating. This is must it what have been like to go and attend the debut of a Mozart or Bach piece. To be in the presence of true genius, to live at the same time as they do, and be able to witness firsthand the expression of that genius out into the Universe. Truly we are blessed.
I am Argentine and I am excited to see and hear my compatriot Pedro Aznar playing a rhythm from our folklore on the guitar... it is called rasguido double...
The Best... Congratulations, great, beautiful Thanks a lot for this performance... Gran composición e interpretación... Es un virtuoso de la guitarra... Todos extraordinarios músicos... From México city...

The magic between Pat and Lyle was on another level. No keyboardist will ever match what Lyle and Pat had.
Agreed HANDS DOWN!!!!!
Absolutely true my friend I sometimes think that they were put here by some faraway godlike source they’re that good!!

30 years later this still gives me the chills!
Yes.
32 and counting!
Still as fresh as when they recorded it I think. 😊
And Pedro Anzar is talent overload. How beautifully incredible can one piece be??? This is cosmic!
I fully concur! Well said! 👏
His vocals really made this album a gem.
he is wonderful, you should listen to his early work with the argentinian group serú girán where he played the fretless bass, best bassist in latinoamerica!
@@billmiller9145 i get your point, but pedro didn't sang in the studio version, it was ledford and blamires
Absolutely fantastic. One of the best live performances of the PMG. Rest in piece Lyle. You will truly be missed.
Pedro sings like an Angel. I love this group and song particularly.
Love
Nice
This song is intensely haunting.
People, this is *music*. no prancing fools or sappy rhymes. Just really wonderful geniuses
So, what isn't music you prancing fool?
you dont have to put down other genres to praise another. this kind of prissy gatekeeping sucks and it ruins communities
That man has a voice like a laser. Right on and not shaky or wavering.
Right, and this is insanely difficult stuff to vocalize.
Pedro Aznar from Argentina. Also a multi instrumentalist❤
The best lineup of the PMG ever!

Without the music of Pat Metheny the world would be a mistake!

That’s a retarded thing to say.

I’ll have tea instead of coffee, but Metheny Group, cats and weed sounds like the best possible morning!
One of the greatest musical compositions ever. Just magical

Amazing Pat and Lyle...sad we will never see them play together again.
Break my heart

Yep. No gods involved. Just lots of rehearsal and eagerness for being as good as possible

in this tune what surprises me all the times is the perfect combination of rythm and improvisation. Something flowing like a river in your head!
I can't believe how great this sounds
Absolutely amazing. Man I miss Lyle
I love Pat Metheny !!!!! This group was spellbinding. RIP Lyle ….😔
30年経って、さらに輝きを増しているような名曲。
Pat is truly a great guitar player, and Lyle is so great with those accents. Thanking him sharing his gifts.
They catch magnífic sounds each one by your instruments.
I dig how Pat - laying out - digs Lyle's key work at just pass the 7mim mark.

My favorite song of all time and the gathering sky...R.I.P🙏 Lyle you were the true genius on the keyboards
I saw this tour in 1992 at Radio City. It’s one of the most magical albums of my life. This and As falls....simply genius.
Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays made beautiful music together
I love Aznar's vocals. I love Ledford and Blamires, but Aznar is my favorite. He uses the dynamics in his voice just like an instrument, which it is. The gentleness in his voice is perfect with the harmonics of Pat's guitar.
I'm going to say it again just look at his face God is playing through him and really enjoying teaching all of us the true meaning of eternal jazz.
Shane Curry so true
Recognizing Him in all manifestations
Dang, man. Good line.
Pat Metheny is kind of a religion to me, but is in Music only, not Jesus not bull shit"".

Very hard to find other guitar player & composer like him. Genius.
Why find? He is their, he is good enough and he is my best "psychoplumber" since 40 years

an honour also for pat to have such a monster musician to back him up.
Pedro Aznar is one of the greatest Spanish musicians in the world.
Pedro Aznar is an Argentinian artist. And you are right, he's music is gorgeous.
LA MEJOR FORMACION DEL PAT METHENY GROUP.
Nobody does guitar like Pat. Nobody does the keys like Lyle. Both at the top!
richard doss I totally agree
So sad Lyle's gone
Saw Pat Metheny group in Montreal in the 80' I was blown away !

Gracias por subirlo, era impresionante el aporte de Pedro Aznar en esos años en Pat Metheny group
Uno de los mejores guitarristas de Jazz de fusión de todos los tiempos.
This made me cry. So beautiful!!!!!!!!
The sheer control Pat has over the guitar is simply breathtaking.
Una sincronía perfecta de Pat & todos los músicos. Mención aparte es la interpretación de Pedro Aznar notableeeee
A true genius! I saw Pat during this 1992 Tour in Pittsburgh.
Amazing! With they one and only Pedro Aznar from Argentina.
The Best PMG líne up ever.
What a performance.

Pedro querido. Genial como siempre.
Tremendo tema y espectáculo, lo veo y lo vuelvo a ver, no me canso de verlo.
Man... I never realized how badass Pedro is... What a legend!
Pedro Aznar es un maldito genio! Esa voz es inconfundible. De los mejores músicos que ha dado la escena argentina.
To wit, Pat is right up there with Gershwin, Bacharach, and Williams among the greatest American composers ever, imho.
Fookin' brilliant.. I saw him at The Live Under The Sky Tour in '90.. Osaka. I was a student then.. Just an Epic show. As always..
Maravilloso gracias¡
The toothbrush is still there! Legend!
great footage, capturing key moments!
Che musica! Porca p…!!!!
Wow, that's amazing, but hard work is not easy to play, just fantastic
FANTASTICO!
Amazing version !!! With Pedro singing !!!
