Right. There’s nothing like his time sense. After listening to him for years on record, I was surprised to hear him live with his special edition. Sometimes the time got so abstract that the horn players just looked at each other and said “ here” and they would come in. The time was everybody’s responsibility, not just his.

When I think of the greatest improvisational musicians, these four are always on that list. And there are so many others, for example ,you have to mention Corea and Cobham, just out of respect. But, then there’s Pat Metheny. He just operates on another level. Not to say he’s better, or more talented, than these other aforementioned greats. But he just goes to places, that most musicians cant even contemplate. When he goes off on one of his playing tangents, the others in the group must be thinking “ I sure hope he comes back to us at some point !” . Kudos to Jack and Dave for keeping the rhythm section perfectly timed around Pat and Herbie’s improvisational swinging. This is just a fantastic version of Shadow Dance. Wow!
I can't get enough of this song. The way Herbie comes in on the off beat then Pat tearing it up on Guitar. Holland and DeJohnett carrying the tune. Should be a Jazz standard for the next 100 years. I love that they look like they real enjoy playing with each other.
Holy cow, what endurance and they look so chill! Everybody was rippin. Pat's solo was so weird and fun. I gotta give props to Dave: to compose those walking bass line parts, and then take those to new places was sooo great.

Pat is probably the greatest jazz musician, composer, improviser, you name it. He defines the term serious musician. Check the Seminario clip on RUclips. Outperforming is subjective to say the least. They are all on the summit of Everest here. If ya held a gun to my head …. it’s Jack. And I’m a bass player. DeJohnette is making it easier let alone possible for the other three to defy gravity. ✌️💚🎵

I saw this quartet in Philadelpha - at the Academy of Music in Center City, aay 1990ish. Damn Good Show! I remember that Mr. Hancock seemed to be trying to make his synthesizer sound like a guitar by adding bends to his notes and Mr. Metheny was trying to make his guitar sound like a keyboard with his delay effects and amplifier settings.

What a monster track this is, i like how each musician really adds something to this piece as Jack DeJohnette kicks off the proceedings on the drum kit followed closely by Dave Holland on bass and Herbie Hancock on piano who all come on stage one by one to their respective instruments as the music really starts to build up slowly, until finally at 4:59 Pat Metheny comes on stage to make his presence felt in the only way he knows how as business really picks up with all of them together as one as the song fully comes to life. Absoultely - that;s what grabbed me right off on this cut.
Has anybody played the drums in more of a variety of ways than Jack DeJohnette.
