Jazz perfection - an absolute jazz masterpiece! Goodness, I love this live performance so much. 👍❤️👍
After listening to this I felt the need to express what an incredibly beautiful solo by Roy Hargrove I thought that was. But then I noticed I'd already written the same thing 2 years ago. At least I'm consistent.
thats funny........I do that all the time too!..........I'll be blown away by a performance and then years later I'll revisit it and be blown away again and leave another comment.........usually for very difference reasons........thats the genius of these musicians........they speak a deep language and as we learn as listeners or musicians we get to see deeper into their world..........what a wonderful gift these people are to the world
@@101xaplax101 Me too. Or even worse I will go to like a comment and notice it's me. :)
@@billstrohler that is hilarious ……let’s just say you know genius when you see it …….especially when it’s you
@@101xaplax101 😢 🧡
Yea man he put his heart and soul in every breath
This one of the best Moments in Music that can be possible
What a brilliant solo by Roy Hargrove.
R.I.P. Roy ...
Yes, I agree, it’s superb. Never tire of listening to it
Roy with that "Reunited" (by Peaches & Herb) quote at 4:57!!!!!!!!!! How I LOVE that boy and how much his musicality AND musicianship are missed. His heart was in ALL GOOD MUSIC...no boundaries. In addition, I'm sure it was also about the fact they were indeed [all] reunited. Unreal....How many of yall caught that??
I didn't wanna believe it, but there it was...
If it isn't brilliant, I don't know what is. Only one of the musicians here (besides Herbie) was a Headhunter, and that's "Wah-Wah" Watson. But these guys (and Terri Lyne) are fine with me! I saw the Headhunters at Red Rocks in Colorado in 1979 or 1980, and it was great. Al Jarreau was on the bill, too, and sang "Take Five" with them. This was back when you could afford to see Herbie Hancock. God, I sound old, don't I?
Not to this old geezer....
This is such an all star lineup!
These boys ain't playing no games! Spectacular !
R.I.P. Roy Hargrove and Wah Wah Watson
i could probably listen to those first 40 seconds forever
I feel the same way.
And maybe, just maybe, a little bit more than forever...
Maturity and growth.
One if not the best live version of "Butterfly" by the author and master of the jazz game.... Herbie and ensemble well done brothas'
hmm...
Yo check out Gretchen parlatos version, it’s so cool
Roy Hargrove! My dude!
Roy Hargrove's smile after his solo always gets me. Some players can be very serious, what with them being in the zone and all. But Roy probably can't contain his happiness at that moment. Playing music is such a high (and even just being a part of the experience)!!
RIP Roy Hargrove
You'll be missed 🥲
The intro is iconic!!
yep Hargrove playing mighty fine, and Herbie, damn what a groove
This is probably the most amazing thing I have ever seen on RUclips.
I’m with you
Getting lost in that amazing Roy Hargrove solo. #RIP 💔
Munyungo... most iconic moosecall in jazz music... he and whawha spiced this piece up so much...
This is one of my favorite trumpet solos ever
Breathtaking.
Especially interested to hear one of THE electric bass players showing his versatility on the Transylvanian arse flute...
Butter fly
Did not see it anywhere. But here's a list of musicians at the set:
Herbie Hancock (p)
Terri Lyne Carrington (ds)
Roy Hargrove (tp,flh)
Munyungo Jackson (perc)
Lionel Loueke (g,vo)
Marcus Miller (b,bcl)
Wah Wah Watson (g)
Love how Herbie often slows down the tempo on his live performances. Bands often speed them up (like EWF)... I'm guessing so they fit more songs in the set. It bugs me! This is a work of art ❤️
Wa-Wa is a straight Beast! 🔥 🔥
Jazz music of the highest order
The idea of claiming someone like Herbie as the greatest musician ever *or* rebutting such a claim, doesn't do justice to the fact that humans are unique and each genius brings his own story to the table.
WOW!! Every version of Butterfly that I hear is completely different not only from each other, but also from the original. They're ALL excellent, so .. profuse thanks for sending!
Butterfly so much truth especially when you hear the words put to it by Norman Connor. Precious Days lights your way..... once you hear the words, it just goes so well with the song! Travel on Herbie you take us star jumping!
Amazing jazz beautiful Herbie wow
Just ran across this. Friggin’ Phenomenal! So perfect right now.
Iconic concert.
This is jazz at its funkiest...brilliant!
Just realized the one sound was a Congo ... amazing 💪❤️❤️❤️⚡
That blew my mind cause I never knew how that sound was made ! Ingenious! 👏🏾😊💯
Thank you so much for posting this. I'm going to buy the "Flood" album on iTunes which has a rendition of this wonderful piece of music.
Yes....the classic hancock tune....how wonderful!!......thanx!
HERBIE IS THE MASTER, STILL, AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.......NICE TOUCH HERBIE!!
His best Line up for this tune!!
MY, MY, MY BRINGS BACK SUCH GREAT MEMORIES!!!!!
Roy Hargrove is pure joy
BEAUTIFUL 2 TIMES..
Harvey Mason on the Headhunters album is real funky. Check out his work on Chameleon.
A master piece!
Absolutely Top Drawer jazz from Mr Herbert Hancock and his band
Beautiful song. Classic.
Fantastic!! WHAT a line-up!!
Brilliance!
Music will take you above and beyond
-it's a wonderful piece of music, thx !

-this is like in heaven....
AMAZING!!!!!!
Butterfly have muuuuch soul...
ハービー最高だぜ❣️
I love Roy.
I really cannot think about a better lineup...
BLACK IS BEAUTYFULL
Is that Marcus Miller on sax? Oh wow! That cat is awesome!
Yes!
Bass clarinet actually...
Ummm first time I've ever seen Marcus Miller on Bass Clarinet. #Dope
me too. didn't know he played. #dope
Richard Trotman
And what a great sound he gets from that Bass Clarinet
Yes he plays on some his songs as well
While at first it sounds like Roy is quoting from the theme/head - it also reminds me a bit like the pick up to the theme of Herbie's own 'Tell me a Bed-Time Story'. It sound like both to my ears, but it may be something else as well. Peace.
RIP Roy Hargrove
One of my morning get into it vibe…
I saw them back in 1974 at the Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis and what a great concert! TB
Süper and super
jazz is alltament of all music
Thanks Fuzzy J!
Wah Wah was having a good ol' time back there, wasn't he?
what a line up
This is my second favorite song of ALL TIME!
+Frapzoid Amazing taste! What's your first?
Follow Your Heart by the Joe Farrell Quartet. It was written by John McLaughlin and he plays guitar on the song. John plays my favorite guitar solo of all time on that song. Not a flashy solo but tastefully done. What are your 2 favorite songs of all time?
Frapzoid I will check that out, immediately. Mine? Hmmmm... Jamiroquai - High Times and Astrological - Sundrips
Herbie also has a degree in electrical engineering!!
I mean - you can almost tell by all the stuff he's using! ;-)
very nice ty
very good. awesome.
that guitarist ..wah--wah watson..he is some character...watch him play the guitar...wow..he is just plain old nuts!!!! and very good!!
That little phrase he does at 0:26 and again at 0:38, I want to find some more music like that. Only place I've heard stuff that really resembles this type of guitar playing is like in 2 episodes of The Sopranos at the bada bing lol.
Wah Wah really adds something good to Butterfly, this might just be the best version, but the one in Flood is great too especially with that 2 or 3 min long ostinato Paul does around 4 mins into the piece. The live Bremen version is nice too
rdv_27
you know he did make 2 or 3 albums on his own....i think he might be on some temptations lps as the background guitarist.......i also did meet him in person at my fathers clothing store......i would love to see if he remembers what he asked my father to do for him (tee-shirt business)haha...he is just great!!!
Nice live rendition.
Someone recently schooled me on how it's not the cameraperson's fault that hardly any shots are taken of the most dynamic musician in the band (the drummer, and Terri Lynn Carrington at that!), but that it's the fault of the producer who apparently doesn't plan for video coverage of the drummer. You would think that perhaps only a novice would be guilty of that kind of musical ignorance, but you would think that they wouldn't hire a novice for this big of a gig. Oh well.
That is some monster trumpet, is it a bass trumpet? Great players all!
Flugelhorn
how cool.
Amazing :D
merveilleuxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Namaste
who plays the bass when marcus playing on the bass clarinet? (1:46)
The real music--begins at 3:40 with ROYS SOLO---FLUGELHORN......EXCELLENT SOLO........NICE GOING ,WAH-WAH WATSON GREAT GUITAR WORK.........WAH-WAH HIS SPECIALTY........
+mviking52 WE ALSO UNDERSTAND YOU IF YOU WRITE IN LOWER CASE LETTERS! ;)
happens to be it just gets unnoticed thats just so innocuous/and or obsequious......and dumb......DODO BIRD!!
+mviking52 I find the 1st head on this to be dreamy, beautiful. Yes mother, It's Friday night!
There is no end
Watching the guitar player is , funy🤩
At 11:49.
Great song though
nice!
Wow, wow, wow, nothing else needs saying, phew
🙌🏾🙌🏾
Roy look like he wanted to throw that trumpet at Marcus!
real sound
Out of sight
While Marcus plays bcl, who plays Bass?
Marcus Miller too
エディーヘンダーソンとベニーモウピンかと思ったら、ロイとマーカスだった。意外な取り合わせに面食らった。
Mannnn that s amazing !! this song takes u to the paradise of music . I love herbie hancock & kool & the gang too. I recomand this song called summer madness check it out ! Peace
Anas
Morocco
That's actually a Bass Clarinet.
