Anybody notice that Gambale starts taking a solo at 5:30 when he's not supposed to? He starts soloing, and then Chick Corea plays the melody over him, and Gambale and Patitucci look up at 5:36. At 5:50, Gambale and Patitucci are laughing about it, and Marienthal gives Gambale the ol' eyebrow raise at 5:57. I never noticed it the first time around. Funny stuff! RIP Chick. I'll be listening this masterpiece during this sad night in Madrid, Spain. I'm so lucky I got to see him perform live in my hometown, Barranquilla, Colombia.
This is the best instrumental version of Spain out there imo. I come back and back to this ever since it was uploaded back when I was in high school. I wanted to see him play live so badly, I can't believe he's gone... RIP
While I agree this is a great rendition for me the best will always be the acoustic version on Light as a Feather. I don't know how old you are my friend but if you are not familiar with it you owe it to yourself to check it out. If you are then to each his own. ✌

I'm crying. I had the chance to listen to him in Marseille a few years ago, and he made the public participate during Spain just like he did here. The unity he brought in the heart of the people for one night was an experience that makes me want to say Chick was an unbelievably humble and generous genius, he will be dearly missed but his legacy will live on through each and every one of us.
Sax player kills it! Bass player shines! Drummer syncopation and chops - wow! I have always respected how Chick allowed his individual band players to grow and expand their talents - letting them take the center stage from time to time. Its the characteristic of a mature player and TEAM player. Additionally, it takes so much pressure off of Chick to have to lead every night. While Chick is gone, his contributions to music lives on!

Siento la pérdida del Maestro, agradezco toda las maravillas que nos deja, con ellas ha hecho nuestra vida más bella, en nuestros corazones Chick Corea. R.I.P.
I can't believe that this masterpiece was composed in 1972 (45 years ago, almost half of a century!!) because it still sounds new and fresh to me in 2017...
FYI: "Spain" was composed by Joaquin Rodrigo in 1939 with a long history of instrumental adaptations until keyboard genius Chick Corea wrote the jazz fusion lyrics in 1971 and released the album "Light As A Feather" with Corea (Rhodes electric piano), Flora Purim (vocals and percussion), Stanley Clarke (bass), Airto Moreira (drums), and Joe Farrell (flute), and made it a jazz standard by 1973. "Spain" was recorded in several versions, by Corea himself as well as by other artists, including a flamenco version by Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin in the 1980s, and a progressive bluegrass version by Bela Fleck in 1979. Corea also performed it as a duo with Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara. Corea thereafter corroborated with Artie Marten and Al Jarreau to rewrite the song, and Jarreau made this popular during his world tour in an album titled "I Can Recall" in 1980. The phenomenal ensemble Manhattan Transfer also did their own version that captured the attention of those who were not really into jazz. The Light as a Feather version of Spain received two Grammy nominations, for Best Instrumental Arrangement and for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Group. In 2001, Corea was awarded the Best Instrumental Arrangement Grammy for "Spain for Sextet and Orchestra".
@@julesdevera8359 With all due respect, Concierto de Aranjuez for classical guitar was composed by Rodrigo in 1939. Jazz artists such as Miles Davis and Chick Corea have adapted parts of that Concierto in different works in reflections of Spain. But Rodrigo didn't compose such a piece AFAIK, it is the Concierto he created. It is an awesome piece BTW and all 3 movements are a joy and an homage to Spain in their own right.
Such an awesome line up, just having Dave Weckl on drums is awesome but to have Frank Gambale and John Patitucci on bass makes for one hell of a rhythm section
