I read today of the passing of Lyle Mays. I can't imagine any other musician with such incredible genius and talent, the ability to send shivers down my spine with just one press of the keys. He will be missed here.
Just found my Offramp Lyle signed LP in one of my moving boxes and listened to it on my thorens record player made me happy again. Then I started surfing for Pat Metheny reading the posts on Layle Mays passed away and get instantly shocked and empty. No one, at least to me, opens a space in music yet to be discovered. And yes, each single key on the piano will miss him
I have ALWAYS loved PMG and played them all evening last night. Pure genius. Little did I know that on the same night that I'm listening (for hours to PMG), Lyle was making his transition. Music speaks a universal language and I CLEARLY understood the language of PMG. Pat Methany and Lyle Mayes were my dudes. #RIPLyleMays Your music will forever play in my heart.
hear, hear .... to everything u said. PMG. Those guys were a HUGE part of my early years ... 16, 17, 18 yrs old. Ya know how some kids would have "imaginary friends". MY friends were my MUSIC heroes. PMG, Michael Franks, Geo Duke, Benson, Grover, Spyro Gyra, Flora Purim, etc etc. Sad to think, as time goes on by, our heroes pass on (in physical) one by one. But they left their treasures behind for all to behold for decades to come.
You're not the only one with this shared experience. It's gotta be the connection. I experienced the same with the passing of George Duke several years ago. Close to Home practically brings me to tears every time I hear it. There's something so spiritual about this track that makes me release so much. Lyle and PMG have been therapy to me since '88 when I first stumbled upon their music...
I'm with you! I was floored today as I saw comments on another RUclips mentioning his passing last month. I've been close to tears all day. This song seems like the perfect tribute to his genius and impact, how he could weave a simple melody into something profound. And this is a melody that seems to come out and say 'its going to be okay'. And the title 'Close to Home' ... thank you Lyle. I hope you are home.
As a frail and mere human being...I sometimes question the good Lord's decisions to take one of us away. This is one of those times....It jus seems a shame to cut short a life so beautiful and talented....but ours is not to say why...but to accept the reality...that Mother Earth has lost an individual of rare talent. The hope is that somewhere...there will be a child born or be at a very young age...or even a young musician who has been touched by this man's music... who will carry on the incredible work that Lyle Mays has done. Yes.....we have his works on electronic media...but as of 2 weeks ago...it is no longer going forward. The person who takes up his torch has some big shoes to fill.....for surely this man was pure Genius...and that word should not be bandied about lightly...but he was truly that... A GENIUS!!! and we are far worse off for his passing....safe trip my friend...i will miss you and your music!!!
It took me many years to realize that all the songs I liked best from Pat Metheny were the ones where Lyle's influence dominates the song. So when I started listening to Lyle's solo works it was very much an "Ah, THERE it is!" moment.
It's a well worn example, but Lennon McCartney comes to mind. Together they were more than the sum of their parts. But I agree, Lyle was the key to making what PMG was really about sonically and compositionally. Wish I could have been a fly on the wall when they wrote San Lorenzo.
I was a Lyle Mays fan before he joined up with Metheny (from his days at North Texas - check out the "Lizard" album if you ever get a chance). So I've had this perspective you're speaking of all along. He's a stunningly amazing composer and arranger. To me, his music is pure exquisite beauty, joy and transcendence. I love the way you and others are putting it in this thread...
You have absolutely no idea what it would mean to me to have another real PMG release with Lyle Mays and Pedro Azner. Okay, I'll help you picture it. Remember the teenage girls when the Beatles got off the plane? That's as close as I can describe it. I wouldn't sleep for days leading up to it. Apparently Lyle has zero interest, even if Pat did. If they reunited they'd sell out stadiums.
R.I.P. Lyle.... you are IRREPLACEABLE and got me through some pretty bewildering times as an undergrad while at University ...... Thank you for your musical brilliance.
Lyle Mays - I am a Pat Methany fan, but only recordings done with Lyle Mays. Lyle has this awesome...spiraling, staircase thing going on. It builds and builds like Ravel's "Bolero." I can't stop listening to Lyle Mays. It hits me...way deep, down. I understand. I connect - in the soul. I listened to this and I was gone.
He was and is a major musical influence in my life. Has been for over 40 years. RIP, you beautiful man. You left the world a better place than you found it. And lovely work by two Chicago musician friends on bass and drums.
Oh my, without a doubt this is the quintessential version of this wonderful song. I loved the version with Pat Metheny, but this is just ethereal. I miss Lyle so much. RIP!
4 years ago (2016), I commented how God has to smile when He listens to Lyle play the piano. Sadly Lyle passed away on February 10, 2020. RIP Mr. Lyle Mays. It's been an absolute pleasure listening to your music throughout the years. I was hoping for his reunion with Pat Metheny. Speaking of Pat, I know he's absolutely devastated by the news. The world hasn't realised it, but we've lost one of the most talented musicians to date.
Farewell, Lyle, you passed away too early. You gave mankind so much, your music is a gift for us all, speaking of confidence and trust, so important in these times. I cannot believe you are gone. Your music will survive the universe.
R. I. P. Lyle Mays. Thanks for the beautiful music you have left behind. Will continue to listen and enjoy your music, but with a touch of sadness knowing that you are no more.
When everything in my world seems to be going wrong, I can listen to this amazing artist and if only for a few minutes I'm at peace and can refocus on the beautiful things all around me.
Simply astounding -had the great honor of going to UNT (NTSU) in 74 & 75 -when he was there -saw him play up close -and from a distance with the 1:00 lab band ,..plus in the years to come either Pat Metheny Group …was always so blown away…speechless -not worthy for sure. Such an incredible talent always. Sleep in peace , Lyle.
Lyle created a context and atmosphere that deepened the listener's perspective. Few are able to achieve this and combined with PM...wow! Very sad to hear that he is gone.
Flying back from Washington late last night I listened to PMG carefully, listening for how Lyle interacted with Pat and always added the flourishes at exactly the right place, never too much, just enough to make it perfect. He never over played anything. He utilized negative space a lot, letting us feel the movement in time for a bit before moving into the next space.
Lyle Mays ha muerto , su musica quedará en nuestros corazones . Su elegancia y finura al ejecutar el piano . Me llega al alma . Gracias Lyle por tantas emociones , Si Dios existe te llevará al olimpo de los grandes .
The former part of your statement is probably truer save for the fact that Lyle was not interested in emulating any Jazz pianist but the spirit of Jazz. The similarity you refer to in his playing style is Lyle's love of classical music which he shares with Bill Evans. As for taking Bill Evan's playing to another level. Ok, that is like comparing apples and oranges Bill Evans while willingly being heavily influenced by the tradition of jazz and its idiosyncracies, Lyle, on the other hand, just was not moved to emulate or reach for those same goals. Moreover, he would be the first to acknowledge the legendary status of Bill Evans as well as the fact that he doesn't see himself as a JAZZER. Hopefully this will settle this fallacy.
What an amazing musician both with his own ensembles and the PMG. Always thoughtful, soulful beautiful playing. He will be sorely missed. Gone way too soon - damn.
For me, Lyle Mays was one of the greatest pianists on this planet. I got to know his and Pat Metheny's music in the 80's and i love their music. His playing is incredibly good, majestic, to the point, sensitive, meditative. There are not enough words for this divine gift. I'm a musician myself and his music still brings tears to my eyes. Thank the universe for this amazing talent and rest in peace Lyle.
This is such a beautiful piece of music - he is sorely missed! Thank God for his musical legacy that allows us to continue to appreciate his genius for such heavenly music
Pat and Lyle brought fusion jazz to a higher level. Just remember this wonderful album As falls Wichita so falls Wichita Falls. I was and still am a progressive rock fanatic but that album created a link between both worlds.
A simply sublime piece. After 30 years of Lyle and Pat as an influence in my playing, they never seem to fall short of branching out and explore even further into new avenues of creative composing. Ever so delicate and elegant in their ways of expressing their genius. Not an easy thing to achieve.
No matter how often I listen to this track and how many different live versions this artist has performed he is one of the best contemporary jazz pianists that has lived to date.
He is gone to a "better place"...but we have his music to remember him and what an extraordinary talent he was.....like a shooting star..oooppppsss!!! catch it before it disappears..put it in a bottle a like fine wine ..only serve it up those who can appreciate what's going on here!!!! Somebody...please!!!!...please!!!...... take up this torch...and carry it on...it deserves to live on...forever!!!
I still cannot believe he is gone. Both him and Pat once said their music may take 30 years to be appreciated. And now 30 years after I knew of them, I begin to appreciate them and Lyle is gone. So very sad……….RIP Lyle
William R Davis, Jr. I hung out with Lyle on a few occasions and I actually ask him if he listened to Debussy because his way of playing resembles that conclusion but he actually told me that he never really listen to Debussy much , I was surprised to be honest .

I prefer this to the recorded version. The impact of the music takes me beyond the shallow envy of the craftsmanship . Like his collaboration with Pat Metheny,, these guys compel you to go somewhere new. They are very special. Thank you for letting me hear this.
Lyle Mays was one of the greatest pianist of all time, my favorite. His influence in the Pat Metheny Group was profound! He and Pat have been likened to McCartney and Lennon, as a composing duo, and rightfully so.
RIP Lyle, the world is a better place because of your playing and composing
I read today of the passing of Lyle Mays. I can't imagine any other musician with such incredible genius and talent, the ability to send shivers down my spine with just one press of the keys. He will be missed here.

When I hear Lyle Mays I hear where Debussy was going, where Bill Evans was and where Lyle wants to be.

I prefer this to the recorded version. The impact of the music takes me beyond the shallow envy of the craftsmanship . Like his collaboration with Pat Metheny,, these guys compel you to go somewhere new. They are very special. Thank you for letting me hear this.
I will surely mis his music. RIP Lyle
Lyle, please feel free to continue touching our souls. No one has ever played such beautiful notes.
Oh Man,How much I miss you !
RIP Maestro Lyle Mays 🙏🏻😢
....And returned home ... R.I.P My Musical Hero . 😞🙏🏿
When we depart this place, I hope Lyle is playing for us. Sublime and moving.

beautiful player/writer filled with soul . RIP Lyle
Lyle Mays was one of the greatest pianist of all time, my favorite. His influence in the Pat Metheny Group was profound! He and Pat have been likened to McCartney and Lennon, as a composing duo, and rightfully so.
