    📢 Flick stick is now a feature in CS:GO 📢
    Check out the controller settings. Currently you still need to set the right stick to flick stick in the steam input settings (since that handles all the controls rebinding in CS:GO), but it no longer needs to be calibrated -- the game of course knows exactly how far to turn the camera in response to a stick input. They also offer options for snapping, smoothing, etc.

      @@JibbSmartGD Yep. The best official example I can think of right now is Splatoon 2, but Nintendo is already known for gyro controls. I honestly haven't found anything that feels as natural as that game because every other official gyro control scheme feels gimmicky and doesn't help. (Splatoon handles it by making the right stick only work horizontally while gyro has high vertical sensitivity and horizontal being low) It's gonna take Sony to make something that completely changes the game to convince Microsoft to standardize it.

  • @alivenumber5
    @alivenumber5 3 года назад +9

    Back when everyone played Quake and Unreal Tournament it was thought that consoles couldn’t really do first person shooters very well because of the limitation of the control scheme. It wasn’t until the evolution and revolution of games like Golden Eye/Perfect Dark and then Halo CE that the control schemes and limitations were worked out to open up an entirely new genre to consoles.
    After playing with it for 2 days I feel like your flick stick+gyro is on par with those innovations. I firmly believe it’s not a gimmick and could be the next big control scheme for first person shooters if the right companies showcase it to the wider audience of gamers. Nintendo almost got there with Splatoon, but the flick stick puts it up over the top.
    Well done. I’m going to keep using it.

    This is incredible but I in ways you might not have yet considered. I'm left-handed with a partial disability on my right side. Playing FPS on console is really, really difficult for me at times... but I tough it out when I can with friends & family. This looks like it would solve my issues entirely. Changing to southpaw config sucks as I'm not accustomed to it and still leaves me with right hand precision problems, but this would let me rely even more on my left in a natural way to aim. I wouldn't have to worry about precision on the right to flick; just mash it (which is about what I do now anyway lol). This helps in a way that even the Xbox Adaptive fails for me.
    Thank you so much for developing this, and I really hope it takes off on console... and that you get sufficient recognition & compensation! :)

      I think Microsoft woke up a bit after this gen's launch (re: their email about DualSense features). XSX is fantastic, but as a player you immediately feel a tiny bit let down after docking the DualSense and picking up an Elite 2. The Elite 2 is the most comfy controller I've ever held... but feels hollow & 'bland' missing the DS hardware. Huge kudos to MS for the Adaptive, though! :)

  • @robostghost4223
    @robostghost4223 5 лет назад +38

    Hey, just wanted to say I really appreciate what your doing, I've always been a fan of unconventional but intuitive controls.
    Just for fun, I went into CSGO and used Valve's Input API to see if I could get something similar. I was able to use a radial menu and map the right stick in 8 directions (up, down, left, right and diagonals). In CS:GO I enable controller, killed the vertical sensitivity and upped horizontal sensitivity for right stick aim. Then in my radial menu I made the controller hold the right stick left or right a certain amount such that it would correctly rotate where expected. For looking back I just used the 180 spin key binding already provided by the game. I then put my gyro mouse always on.
    It's definitely not as good as your creation. It only takes digital 8-direction input and doesn't allow for adjusting at the edge, but it gets the basic idea there at least.
    It is pretty intuitive, especially looking back. In a lot of ways it reminds me of how a top down shooter with right stick aiming controls would work, but just in first person.
    I would only say that as a steam controller user, I personally found it more comfortable to add high acceleration to the right touch pad (with always on gyro and disabled vertical touch pad aim) and doing the flicking in terms of my thumbs speed, but I think for controllers like the DS4 and Switch controllers which you have been working with, your idea makes a lot more sense.
    One more thing, do you plan to try to implement the flick stick idea for a 6DOF game like Overload. Would be interesting to see what you can do with that. I was also wondering if you could still implement such a thing even with a non-gyro controller. In smash brothers for example, the game puts you in a running state when you flick/slam the stick left or right, while a normal left/right stick movement puts you in walk. Could that be done such that a flick/slam activates flick stick aim, but a normal stick use does the usual aim type

    • @JibbSmartGD
      @JibbSmartGD  5 лет назад +5

      Great work getting something like it working in Steam! Wow! That's really impressive!
      Yeah, that comparison with top-down shooters is a good one. I haven't played Overload, but it would be very interesting to see how flick stick would work in a game with 6DOF!
      And finally, with flick stick working with a non-gyro controller -- yeah, I think that could work. I struggle with the distinction between a slam and a regular press, but, with some fine-tuning and practice, that could work great! Or with a dedicated button to trigger it. That'd be a little like Splatoon's Y button, which points the camera in the direction you're moving, but using the right stick and working much more like flick stick would make it much better, in my opinion.
      Thanks for the encouragement :)

    I tried this with Ion Fury, it was quite good and could see myself using it if I HAD to use a controller for some reason. Or, ideally, with Steam's new portable.
    Honestly this is just so good, that it should become one of the normal options on consoles-control innovation have arguably stagnated there for so long since the introduction of two thumbsticks.

    I’ve used legacy camera movement and gyro for a few years now on all shooters I’ve played, and it’s great, but not yet perfect. If a good way to incorporate 360(rotation)*180(up&down) vision with flick stick is found, not just a 360 vision, I think it could be the perfect input, and even be much better than mouse.

Ofc it should be optional. not all people will get used to gyro conotrol system.

      MS will not add gyro to their controller for no reason, developers will not add gyro option to their games just because a new MS controller has gyro, a majority of players will not use gyro just because their MS controller and their games support it. Just started using gyro and I definitely see the tactical advantage, plus it’s actually more fun too. Can’t wait to see if I can get good with it.
    I tried flick stick and it’s really cool, however I don’t think it’s very practical when it comes to comfortability. I can’t hold the controller in different positions if I desire, because I’m unable to adjust the camera properly with the right stick, since it’s horizontal controls only. I have to hold the controller in a very specific way (level to the ground), otherwise the camera will be looking in the wrong place. This can be uncomfortable on the couch, compared to a desk for example.
    With regular right stick controls I can fully access my camera manually, which allows for horizontal AND vertical adjustments if I need to.
    That’s the only issue I have with it, if that makes sense.
    I applaud whoever it was that came up with this completely unique way of playing.
    TL;DR
    I can see myself using gyro, with regular right stick controls instead of flick, only for more vertical and horizontal camera control.

    • @JibbSmartGD
      @JibbSmartGD  Год назад +1

      Thanks! That's fair enough. I consider a "gyro off" or "reset camera" button *essential* for flick stick, and one of the ingredients of good gyro controls with regular stick anyway.
      I prefer "gyro off" button, because it's very simple, helps with the most situations, and is directly analogous to lifting your mouse off the mousepad to reset its position without turning the camera.

    CS:GO/steam seems to natively support gyro now, or at least it worked for me despite having not set up any software. Not flick stick though.
    This will never match a mouse and keyboard at high levels. Ever. You don't have enough keybinds for your grenades, your trigger takes too long to pull, and turning with a gyro will never be as efficient as flicking your wrist/elbow. However, I found that with just 5 minutes of knocking about in Aim Botz, I could actually get pretty accurate with it, and could probably out aim most silvers using it, even while spraying.
    This is the future casual gaming. You can even play CS:GO with this thing and be able to hit shots, the game with the most complicated shooting mechanics I know which demands the most precise movement and aim to control weapons. That's absolutely incredible. This means cross platform play may actually become viable without controller users having no way to compete with PC players (in other games of course), FPS games actually become fun on console, and I can watch gameplay on console of an FPS game without dying inside. I love it.

    As a console player who wants to get into PC games like CSGO and so forth, I think mouse aim is fantastic it’s so much better than joystick. My aim skills have hit the ceiling and can’t go any higher and it’s honestly infuriating when I get into close quarters and don’t win a fight due to the limitations of controller, I think everyone may have experienced this on a game like halo or Call of duty in their youth. But I can’t get into WASD, it’s not natural for me. I don’t feel comfortable moving diagonally and I want to move omni-directionally. I think the gyro aim is probably best suited for me. I think if you haven’t made one, I think you should make a discord, this allows a social ground for people to learn from others how to become better at gyro but also a means people wanting to spread the word. I think if this really starts to take off you should really make a discord, as well the person that reminded me this exists CammyCakes a destiny 2 RUclipsr is looking to try gyro aim more and will even try to use it on console. Secondly, I find it easier to keep the controller still while pressing R1 than while pulling one of the triggers.
      In CS:GO I have R2 set to disable gyro (like lifting the mouse off the mousepad to reposition). L2 is jump, so it doesn't interfere with me doing other actions at the same time. This is more important in my Quake configuration :P
      Thanks for your questions :)

      @@JibbSmartGD I wondered if you had anything to reset gyro! I use the Steam controller so I'm used to having gyro activated only when my thumb is resting on the thumb pad, but your flick stick has made me realise the potential for dual analogue for fps. Have you got anything bound to the trackpad?

    • @JibbSmartGD

      @@bobbywatson5697 JSM doesn't acknowledge touchpad touches yet, and in the current version touchpad clicks are automatically bound to recalibrate the gyro.
      I've never used the touchpad in a game. Steam Controller touchpads are really convenient, but I would've thought the DS4 touchpad is a bit far out of the way to make it easy to use. But that's just me.
      Would you want to use the DS4 touchpad to activate gyro?

      @@JibbSmartGD Probably not, but when playing games with a minimap or a map screen, using the touchpad to navigate it would feel very ergonomic compared to using an analogue stick. It would only really work with maps that can be clicked and dragged with a mouse though.

      Hi! glad you like it :) Running JoyShockMapper just means double-clicking the executable. It'll open a command line window where you can enter the commands or import configs. GyroWiki has a growing database of configs, including some for Warzone: gyrowiki.jibbsmart.com/game:call-of-duty:warzone

    Jibb! Such rad work you've done!
    I'm a lifelong mouse and keyboard player but I always liked the idea of gyro aiming and when Valve of all people released a PC centric controller that had a gyro I had to give it a shot. That was many years ago now, and I've been 100% Steam Controller ever since. I'm in pretty deep with the Steam Configurator and reliy heavily on a number of its specific features like Chorded Presses and Action Sets & Layers. But FlickStick.... Holy smokes. The idea of having my right touchpad setup like that just blows my mind!
    Is there hope for FlickStick to somehow be integrated within, or function alongside my existing Steam Controller configuration?
    Oh, and another question, for games to work with FlickStick, do they need to support simultanious mouse and gamepad/xinput?
    - If these answers are avaiable some place else point me in the right direction. I don't want to waste your time explaining something you may have already spelled out elsewhere! -
    This is just so damn cool. I really hope you can continue to invest yourself into this project because stuff like this just really makes me excited lol.
    Also, got a Patreon I can support??

      I believe it's more of a when question than an if question, for FlickStick being implemented for steam controllers. the FlickStick in practical use is a mouse that moves only on the horizontal plane meaning any game that uses a mouse to control the camera can also use flickstick. Jibb's coverage on it is also a really good read if that is something you are interested in i'll leave his link for FlickStick here gyrowiki.jibbsmart.com/blog:good-gyro-controls-part-2:the-flick-stick

      Wow, thanks for the encouragement! I don't have a Patreon (yet!), but I'm not opposed to the idea! Any ideas what I could kinds of things I could offer supporters?
      I'd love to see flick stick in Steam. Just need to ask Valve, I guess! I've looked into adding Steam Controller support to JSM, but it'd be a lot of work, and I have to prioritise things carefully. Like Vyking said, I've put everything there is to know about implementing good flick stick online (in the link he shared). Also, JoyShockMapper is open source in case anyone wants to look at that. So hopefully, with some kind encouragement, Valve will see fit to add it to the Steam controller configuration.
      I don't mind you asking any questions you have :) I'm working on an FAQ for GyroWiki, but the priority is actually making videos, making improvements to JSM, and spreading the word.
      Games don't need to support simultaneous mouse and gamepad, but it can be a little complicated. Usually you can just disable gamepad input and have JSM handle everything as keyboard and mouse input. Or, for games that don't let you disable gamepad, you can use a gamepad they don't recognise (like the Switch Pro Controller) or an external tool that can block the gamepad input from getting to the game.
      The simplest version, like you said, would be to have simultaneous gamepad and mouse input. That way, the game can have all its regular mappings and on-screen prompts, and JSM can just handle gyro and flick stick. But I'm yet to play a game that lets you disable just the right stick input, or turn its sensitivity all the way down to 0, and so that can interfere with flick stick.

    I've discovered gyro gaming thanks to this video and now I can't get enough of it. It's awesome man and I'm someone coming from mouse and keyboard. Many thanks to the creator of joyshockmapper. There is great potential in this tool to my believing. I only wish there was this option to lock the up and down pitch control to the camera so that the camera is always level with the controller. At this moment the camera position keeps changing during play. Please reply if you know how to fix this somehow.

      Hi Zach, while this works with almost every game ever, it doesn't work with Valorant :( It did at first, but in their efforts to prevent cheating they've prevented the game from acknowledging virtual mouse events like what JSM and mouse other input remapping software use.
