@D0ZZR _ I say, as long as buttons that are critical to movement, (besides initiating sprint) emulate keyboard inputs, i.e. wasd and space bar, they shouldn't interfere with the mouse... oh, and keep left and right triggers bound to right and left mouse buttons. The rest of the buttons, like start and select, face buttons and d-pad can be kept on controller inputs for convenience sake. That should prevent the weird mouse stuttering apex has when using mouse and controller at the same time I like to make my control schemes similar to halo 5's hell jumper though if that give's you an idea to how I set things up.

When people say I shouldn’t be able to use gyro because it puts them at a disadvantage when they use duals sticks, I tell them they shouldn’t be able to use dual sticks because it puts me at a disadvantage when I use my single stick N64 controller. Progress is going to happen, and people will adapt just like they did when dual stick took over single stick aiming. People though dual stick was horrible because it was new, the infamous review of Alien Resurrection from 2000 by Steven Garrett is a perfect example of how this thought process will not age well.
The argument that gyro-aiming is a crutch for "people who are bad at aiming" is absurd when the only alternative is aim-assist (aka literally having a computer do most of the aiming for you).
@@theangriestcrusader Apex AA is literally 60% of an aimbot, as long as the character model doesn't stray too far from the crosshairs, apex will track 60% of the way for you. It's absolutely oppressive at close range in the hands of a player that knows how to utilize the AA.
I like to describe it as gyro is a mouse that is controlled through rotation instead of translation. The controller can rest comfortably in your lap even while you are using it to pull off crazy flick shots.
god that's exactly how I describe it. On a mouse you're moving on the X & Y location axis for movement. On a controller you're using the Z & X rotational axis for movement. Tho the footage in the video seems to be using a different method, more like a pivot from the body than pivoting from the wrists. I'd argue the latter is better, but both options should exist and it largely comes down to preference at that point anyway. edit: should've watched the whole video he does both arm/wrist methods
I really don't understand why this hasn't been already implemented in console games as an option. These gyroscopes have been in controllers for ages now. Thanks for making this video though, this should really come under the attention of game developers as soon as possible.
I remember grinding halo on gyro for the first time and having fun with the game again for the first time in what felt like years. It was like I was actually aiming the gun myself.
I've never used gyro, in fact I've been a KB/mouse player all my life. HOWEVER. I used something similar to gyro in VR. There are VR mods for GTA V and RDR2 now in which you perform all your actions with a joystick / keyboard, but aim with your head. Yes, sounds weird, but it actually works. With a little bit of practice I was able to achieve precision closer to my mouse aiming. I assume gyro has a similar feel to it. Anyway, can't wait for Steam Deck where gyro + trackpad is going to be the main means of playing shooters. It's a game changer, guys
Gyro can kind of be described as diet vr gaming. lol. I'm aware of vr hacks for games like that, and this is rather similar implementation minus the extra wide resolution used to cheat in the fake vr.
the splatoon community got this right years ago, controller sticks are horrible for aiming and you don't need aim assist to fix it, all you need is gyro and good controller mapping.
@@erronn. The whole point is to be rid of aim assist all together so that the only shots that are made are ones entirely made by the player, not by the game
@@erronn. Splatoon is probably not the best example.. You don't need aim Assist since a huge chunk of the game is inking terrain.. Aside from some of the other game modes such as tower control but you can make due without it..
I usually think of unforgiven when using gyro against twinstick controller players, hopping up and down like they're stepping on hot asphalt. Just steady aim your cross hair follow their little dance and just squeeze the trigger.
Gyro is amazing. Cant go back to standard dual analog controls for shooters. It just feels so outdated when you compare it to Gyro and Mouse K+B controls. Aim Assist= Aimbot.
@@erronn. I disagree. Sticks are better for moving the camera but for aiming gyro beats it easily. I'm guessing the reason you say Sticks are better in COD and gyro in Splatoon is due to aim assist and especially lock on aiming. Splatoon has no aim assist what's so ever so when your playing the game using sticks it's extremely hard to play it. While COD the aim assist and lock on aiming makes the game feel playable. I bet if you turn off all aim assist and lock on aiming in COD it will feel just like splatoon.
as a pc player i reallllly want gyro aiming to take off on console so you can have more fast aiming games like quake, unreal, apex, overwatch, and it be fairer in cross play. The COD-style corner shooter gameplay just bores me.
I wish gyro was a more widespread feature. I used it to play through Doom 2016 on my Switch as well as on Splatoon, and it is so much better than using standard sticks. Now, I am and have been a PC gamer for as long as I can remember, so I lack the practice with sticks to make a proper comparison, but I think the fact that I can aim properly with it at all where I can't aim when aim assist is helping me should speak volumes about how much better it is.
Definitely. I had to go back to sticks for a bit in this video, and felt weird trying to get that footage. I had to remember to let the game do most of the work for me, and that's kinda sad.
Just started Gyro today in The finals, hung out in the range for an hour before the aim started to click. Doing alot more damage than i was with sticks. Now im just messing arou d with traversal and posistion in game. Definitely gonna stick with this hopefully it keeps getting better. Nice video
This channel convinced me to try gyro control seriously. It's been months or an year probably, and I got a chance to squeeze out about 30 hours of actual playtime to try it on a couple of games I really wanted to play which I couldn't because I couldn't use a mouse for gaming any more. After spending about that much of hours to try to find my sensitivity and all the setups done, sadly I want to say I am not so sure about this. Surely it was interesting, but whenever I actually need the precise and fast aim I expected gyro to be capable of, it still felt like a shackle that I felt using sticks before. In one game I tried flick stick, and the other game I kept the default mapping then made R2 soft pull as a hold-to-enable gyro switch so I can also use right stick along with it to look around. While aiming felt limited, it also took too much effort to just find a way to squeeze a gyro toggle into a mapping, and to make it well configured to get used to it well. I still couldn't find and set a good way after all that time, and people in general never want to spend any time configuring controls for a game, so it's going to be a huge hurdle for a gamer to try out. The only good thing I got out of this was getting introduced to DS4Windows' feature that converts gyro into an analog x-axis for steering. That one worked wonder, and gives you even more precision than a single axis of a stick can because it converts both axes of gyro output into one axis. But that's not the common case where it can help you aim like you would with a mouse. And it still has its issues which you gotta fix it by yourself and submit the code to the developers or just give up and take as it is, as no one uses it. Their development priority for this feature has no reason to be any high. And either cases where gyro was great or not... my arms still got pain. Controllers are too heavy to hold in the air for an hour or longer. I wanted to get precise aiming and less arm pain with gyro control, but I couldn't get either. I am glad I got to try this method, but I wish it was actually helpful to me.
it's neat that you tried it though. You don't have to hold your arms up for it to work btw. You can have the controller kinda resting on your lap, or floating between your thighs. You could also try binding the right joystick to mouse and increasing the sensitivity with that. Been playing that way lately and it allows me the flexibility of speed in combination with the gyros precision.
Two questions: 1. Any specific tips on improving one's own gyro aiming skills? 2. Thoughts on other console game's gyro aiming systems? (Splatoon series, Monster Hunter Rise, LoZ:BotW, LoZ: OoT 3D)
This site reviews games on ps5 specifically on how good controller support is, but I hear games like Paladins is supported, fortnite and doom on switch support it pretty well I hear. I play on pc exclusively so support isn't an issue. As for improving it, if you have a pc, I recommend getting aim lab to train your aim with gyro. Also a simple tip, try to aim ahead of where your target will be. As for setting up sensitivity, experiment until you find what feels natural for your arms to move with, and practice with that sensitivity on all games. Measure how far your reticle goes when turning your controller 90 degrees so you know what to set for each game you play. Usually easier than setting stick sense for each game.
One good way to adapt your aim depending on your situation or even game is when you need to aim around you if an enemy is very close range make sure to keep your controller a bit further away from your crotch area to the point where your elbows are almost on your legs but not quite. Aim lab gridshot is a very good way to 'feel' better with gyro and get more comfortable with it. Also mainly helps in your speed on longer range flicks and your nerves in fast paced situations. Spidershot is probably the best way to work on your precision and is how I start my warmups. Something like spheretrack/spheretrack90 followed by reactivetrack is a great way to improve on your tracking aim for most pvp games with fast strafing; this is how my warmups end with usually. Make sure you are relaxed! This one is such a hurdle to get over, aiming with a mouse usually gets better if you slightly tense but I find that the tense level you need to play to your max ability with gyro is soo low. Of course, don't overdo it and aim slowly, just be slightly prepared (best way I could describe it). Last one may seem slightly farfetched but make sure you are comfortable with other in game mechanics; if you are struggling to remember the right keybinds or panicking due to bad decision making, then your aim will suffer. Stuff like practising movement (if the game has advanced movement mechanics like apex legends) and other mechanics so that they won't hinder your aim is highly underrated.
@@tekgeekster Thanks for the reply. Not sure what you mean by "this site", I assume it has something to do with the first link in the description. Also, for setting sensitivity, should I use some sort of tool/script in measuring how much I turn in game relative to the controller, or should I go by feel? Will try out Aimlab in the meantime.
@@fasihzubair481 I take it general comfort is just something that comes with muscle memory/practice over time. Are there specific positions for aiming in different situations, or is it one general style for all situations?
@@MikeAKAm1ke When you want extreme precision, hold the controller pretty close to your crotch so the bottom of your hand lays on your upper thigh area. If you want more speed/more range of movement, then move the controller further away from you so that when you do bigger turns, you won't bump into your stomach.
Yeah, I remember looting being much easier. Inventory management on the other hand was a pain. The only way to fix that without making config toggles is if they officially supported gyro.
I'm a lefty and my gyro set up is left trigger shoot, right trigger ads, top left shoulder reload, jumping press down on left joystick and use to walk fowards and backwards, right stick move side to side and to aim look around gyro controls. I recommend trying these settings if your a lefty even if your not a lefty you might enjoy it as a better set up with gyro aiming. I can now shot straff and jump while still keeping sight of my target.
This video started quite the journey for me, after experiments on a pc with the ds4 I decided to grab the Armor-x pro for my series s. I absolutely destroyed my thumb and gyro kept me in the game. So thank you for one of the best videos Ive seen on gyro, and my god is it so far from a gimmick!!
The way Zelda botw used gyro aiming completely changed my view of it. I disliked (actually kinda still do) the Splatoon way where you use gyro for big and small movements, but in zelda I was stick aiming and making the final adjustments with gyro without even noticing it at first. It just felt conpletely natural. Now I keep thinking why aren't all console shooters working this way?
The game sorta requires it. Not entirely, but the way the right stick lacks vertical aiming entirely when gyro is enabled kinda creates that illusion that you need a higher sensitivity to stay competitive... which you do anyway, because everyone who plays Splatoon competitively has learned the ins and outs of motion aiming and realized that a higher sensitivity is obviously faster to aim with so you shoot your targets faster than they can hopefully shoot you.
One of the biggest reason why gyro is better; backpaddles they’re often used for face buttons when with gyro they could be their own separate input which would (again) further close the gap between mouse & keyboard and controllers
Splatoon player here, been playing gyro since 2019 and I can't go without it anymore. The support on switch has been amazing and I've constantly been upgrading my controller over the few years with better and more accurate gyro functionality than the base pro controller. Ask a stick player to turn around in a game like splatoon or fortnite and then have an actual fight and laugh as you run rings around them. I used to argue gyro users should still get aim assist like stick players do (ironically not a thing in the games I play) but to be frank, I really disagree with that by the day.
No. I mean, I'm at the end of my rope now unfortunately. I thought I could ride things out, but I can't keep making videos in the situation I'm in now. It sucks. Hopefully some day I can find a stable enough situation to continue this "hobby". Thank you for liking my work, and supporting gyro aiming.
3:31 I'll admit, for the longest time I thought paddles were, by and large, useless. But after a bit of thought regarding UltraKill tech there's at least one technique that I cannot do that *can* be done (hypothetically) with them. Considering how niche that sounds I think they're still useless, but on absolutely maximizing ability they'd technically be useful. Wouldn't mind snagging an 8bit Pro 2 at some point, but I cannot justify it atm
Yeah, even with gyro, paddles on a controller are still a big help. Trying to pull off crouch sliding in quake champions is a pain without them for me. Wish sony would hurry up and make one for the dualsense.
@@justarandomperson3700 Not terribly so with weapon/quick select on the face buttons, though even before I switched to controllers I always swapped with weapon keys over the 'last weapon' key. (assuming that's what you'd map it to) That said it would be slightly faster, and probably easier overall to pull off frankly. I'd definitely map it that way for Doom Eternal since I otherwise have the weapon wheel button far away on the up dpad since I don't use it. Prob chainsaw on the other paddle, whichever is more comfortable
Three years later and it’s still not as popular as it should be which is a shame. I recently purchased a new controller to use for PC gaming because it offered the ability to add gyro aiming to all pc games and I use it in Helldivers 2 to great effect (though Helldivers supports gyro but it’s supposed to work in games that don’t support it as well since the controller is doing the processing). Gyro is only slightly less accurate and fast as mouse aiming when you practice, it just requires new muscle memory which takes time. To me though it is well worth the investment if you can do it. As I get older I find my hand can hurt a bit after gaming on keyboard for extended periods of time (wasd movement while trying to hit alt can really wear on you after a while lol). The controller helps with this a lot
I could never get used to gyro controls. I tried for about a week using them on doom eternal for switch and just could not get the grasp of it. I'm perfectly fine just using sticks for my shooters, but do agree more games should make gyro controls an option
Great Vid! I would still like to use backpaddles for PC games that need custom shortcuts on keyboard. You can also configure the the backpaddles as shift keys that change the sensitivity of the analog sticks or completely change the input of your other buttons on the fly. Gyro aim plus backpaddles would *be epic.
It's nice to know that someone else has the same experiences as me with gyro, and I get it about Apex, it's been a pretty overwhelming game to me too, but not because of aiming either.
I have finished many FPS games on PC with my Steam Controller. I will never give up gyro aiming. I believe, if xbox would jump on board then it could be mainstream. I have a feeling that developers go for lowest common denominator which is the xbox controller at the moment.
Unfortunately Xbox gamers are known as the dudebro gamers aka the cod gamers and a majority of them are set in their ways and would never give gyro controls a chance.
Side note, I'm playing doom 2016 on switch right now and it's kind of suffering from the same motion issues as Apex (i totally felt what you meant). As a huge splatoon player i personally feel leaving the verticle axis locks, or using flick stick are the two best approaches to this. But overall your video is very good and although i already support gyro, you brought up some points i hadn't even thought of such as accessibility. Gyro isn't a gimmick, auto aim is, gyro is a tool to create the best experience
I'm get a little controversial here, but proper gyro, like splatoon, is better than either option. Hear me out: the gyro allows for precision aiming just like the mouse, something we all know sticks can't do. But WASD movement is flawed and the mouse and keyboard just isn't comfortable for alot of people and there are different shaped options for controllers. The analog sticks might be flawed for aiming but for movement inputs in full 3d games, it's just better. Don't believe me? Play splatoon online with a mouse and keyboard. You'll probably do fairly well against stick players but to a motion player you're an easy target.
@@tekgeekster Thatsrb2dude actually made a video of him fighting inner agent 3 with mouse and keyboard. Honestly idk if he was using an adapter or if he was using an emulator, but he clearly did not have a good time doing the challenge lol
I always really liked your Halo video on why gyro isn't a gimmick so this was a pleasant surprise to stumble on. I was wondering if you've considered making more videos on gyro aim to help get the word out. If you do I'd like to see more gameplay examples of games using gyro such as 3rd person shooters and just different kind of games. Like stealth games, Metal Gear Solid 5 was a popular one when Valve released their controller. You were able to keep the button prompts and analog stick movement which is simply amazing for a stealth game cause analog movement helps a ton over a keyboard. You were able to keep precise movement and have mouse aim so you got the best of both input types. Recently I played Tomb Raider 2013 on steam with gyro and it worked amazingly with the button layout and amazing aim. The only downside was the fact the mouse input changes the button prompts so it can be a tad bit confusing at first. There's also a weird issue with mouse and the right stick not liking each other when not in ADS. The solution was to map the gyro to activate when u aim, the right stick works with it when in ads too but won't work for some reason while just walking around. Not a huge problem though because you can't hipfire so having the gyro only work when aiming makes sense. Anyways just more showcases of what gyro can do in different kinds of games from normal fps (maybe even arena shooters like Quake or modern Doom because they need precise aim) and comparisons to 3rd person shooters or stealth games such as Tomb Raider and MGS5. I know I suggested a fair bit but 1 final suggestion is if you do a video about gyro aim on 1 specific game, I reccomened doing a handcam and showing how it looks on different sensitivities. 1 for low, 1 for medium, and 1 for high. It's just to show how much movement is needed and the difference. Some games are better with low sensitivity while others are far better with medium to even high and I never see anyone show the difference in movement needed. I think it'd be great to show people the amount of movement would be needed based of their settings. It will also show people that there doesn't have to be an insane amount of movement in general (if they think it's like waggle from the wii) and if they want to have to tilt the controller less, they can with medium to high sensitivity. I'm used to medium to high with gyro and I have pretty solid and stable aim. I barely have to move the controller to aim at times an. Just showing the compassion would give people a good idea of what it'd be like on a certain game Anyways good video, I'm hoping for more people to get on board with gyro.
I plan on addressing some of these things in the next video... which is going to be on quake if you could tell by the teaser at the end of the video. lol Thanks for the suggestions though, I kind of want to focus on more PvP for these videos to sway the hard core crowd as they're usually the hardest bunch to convince, but I do want to stray from that of I have nothing else to play.
I got into gyro aiming thanks to the steam controller, just bought a scuf impact for apex legends and I sincerely hope gyro becomes an industry staple, it’s too good
Eeeew, scuf. Jokes asside, that's awesome. I spent some time with the steam controller at the start of this journey. Hoping I can keep this going despite my current circumstances. Also, jealous that you have paddles on your controller. Scuf and their dumb patent. 눈_눈
Hi, I've made a video on how quake now supports gyro aiming on PS5 and PS4 now. I just realised that a Flick Stick is what we want! For now I am using high x sensitivity to replace that.
I'm a little mixed on it myself. I like how smooth normal aim can be, it helps me gather my surroundings better and is nice for strafe hopping, but flick stick can be important for how fast multiplayer can be. I've been trying to make a config that uses both.
Tried out Apex on the switch to test out the gyro implementation, and... Oh God, what a nightmare. I didn't understand why it felt so horrible, tried to adjust sensitivity in a bunch of different ways (because for some reason they decided to put in multiple sliders that adjust the sensitivity in seemingly different ways, that I still can't understand), and nothing felt good. Now that you mentioned the drift compensation it all makes sense, thanks.
Ehh I tried Apex I could never get into the game. I'm the type of person that if I'm feelin the game I'll go out of my way to learn the controls no matter how obscure they may seem.
From hours upon hours from Splatoon, Gyro is something that should paid attention to and given a chance more often. Fortnite added Gyro only to switch as far as I know, though it was not pretty. Gyro is the best option when it comes to intergrading mouse and controller. Tech yesterday has been working on a controller that combines a controller and mouse. As cool as it is, it is very big and doesn’t use the standard controller layout to make room for the mouse pad. It is a cool project, though your points with gyro being inexpensive is really good cause a lot of the “pro controllers” break easy and aren’t built well. None the less, this is a interesting and entertaining watch.👍
Thank you. I'm aware that controllers tend to break easily and I spend a lot of time fixing them for people. It's frustrating. Gyro can mitigate that since you're using sticks less strenuously, but it can still be a problem. It's definitely made my controllers last longer so far. No stick drift yet. And I'm aware of tech yesterday. I like that he's doing it, but I feel he's missing the bigger picture you pointed out in that it's very unorthodox for people to use. I'm also not a fan of his complete disregard for other companies efforts of reinventing the wheel like valves steam controller, coming off a bit narcissistic.
Yo! Gyro is the way. Been decently happy with the Armor X pro but looking to evolve Xbox gyro more! Have you found any new ways? I’m curious about these new Gamesir controller that can map to K&M in their software. Would an Xbox recognize that as K&M and finally give us mouse gyro on Xbox?
@@kylerobbable If it can be natively recognized as a keyboard and mouse, then yes. Best way to check that is to launch a program in Windows that requires admin privileges. Like Resource Monitor.
I have been playing apex on the switch for a year. I use gyro aiming and since apex is pretty much my first shooter it’s made the learning curve super quick and even with the underwhelming power of the switch I’ve been able to keep up in most fights. If I could get gyro in apex on ps5 I believe I’d play amazing
@@tekgeekster that’s debatable. Fortnite has seen a huge surge of gyro users since they added it and other games have too. And a few players have managed to make it work on PS5 with some PC junk and it helped them a ton. In other words it’s viable and respawn may understand tagt
@@tekgeekster I played around with the motion controls to balance it with the right thumb stick sens and it made my aim assist feel like a literal magnet, it should be illegal 🤣
So something I've been wanting to try out- gyro aiming with optical sensor movement. Or put another way, mouse and gyro aiming together, each one covering the weaknesses of the other. Someone built a controller that could conceivably combine the input methods!
@@tekgeekster I'll get there. But first, we need to talk about this "Neeral" character you mentioned in the video, lol Edit: they have seen the controller Tech Yesterday has developed. I also left a comment on that video talking about any issues I have about it- namely there's an upward laser on the device and I still don't see them implementing the gyro on the DualShock 4 controller they used as the brains. But they're clever and make sure there's a scroll wheel, something even Valve has forgotten can belong on a controller.
That terrible thing? I understand the concept, but it's poorly executed and looks like a mess to use. It's basically a worse steam controller, meanwhile the creator of it mocks the sc for being bad without going into why valve made the sc the way way it is. This is also sometimes a heated topic on the gyro discord.
Gyro aiming and mouse aiming are sort of the same thing. So much so that people on pc usually bind the gyro to the mouse for the most accurate movement, but what you're asking sounds like the steam controller's track pad. Something I've played with extensively and feel can rival mouse aiming if you don't factor in flick stick for more traditional controllers.
once my steam controller passes away...sadly i have to leave it behind. at least the ps5 controller will be there but...losing the touchpad will suck. at least gyro is there baby
It'll take a bit to adjust to. Half of the footage in my first video was steam controller. I wish sony made back buttons for the dualsense like they did for the ps4 controller
Ive been using the dualsense nonstop for the past few months and the gyro is much better than the steam controllers. So much so that it makes me prefer the dualsense. The steam controller's touchpads will always be better than thumbsticks though
People who are against it just don't know anything about it. It's really that simple. They won't change their habit just for fun, games need to have courage and use it. I'll get popular whenever kids will search for « best settings pro players use in Call of Duty » and when they'll all say « use gyro », everyone will use it. And honestly, flick stick might even look like an advantage over mouse control. Not something I would complain about as long as gyro aiming is available on PC too. It'll just be a matter of choice. Really, gyro NEEDS to be usable on PC natively and be implemented in more games.
Hey are you using a hybrid setup here? I noticed your UI swaps between controller buttons and keyboard keys. I’ve been trying to use normal controller + gyro mouse because I love analog movement with the left stick, but it stutters like crazy as it’s constantly swapping the UI from controller to MnK. Currently just have all my buttons mapped to MnK but I absolutely detest the digital WASD movement.
Great vid. Apex is my main, and there doesn't seem to be much of a gyro community there which is a shame considering that the switch and mobile versions have it, but potentially the implementation is bad. Straight mouse input nothing fancy, no aim compensation or anything works amazingly. And the more it's implemented badly the more people seem to write it off as gimmicky. At 9:10 you comment that you had issues with mixed input using steam input in apex, "jittery and decelerates with small/slow movement". I haven't had these issues at all and I use default controller input for all inputs + mouse gyro ADS. So I would say that it is an issue that can be ironed out in your settings. I recall when I first set up my steam config for Apex I had an issue where precision movement felt... Like the pixels were 3x3mm, just awful. And the resolve was to turn ingame mouse sense to minimum and bump stem config mousegyro sense all the way up. Hope you give apex annother crack and sort it out. It's a great game.
Pointer controls, while convenient for aiming within a 45° window, ain't great for much else, and either needs external tracking or uses a gyroscope anyway, so at the very least, you can have both. But developers probably won't bother with it thinking adding gyro was enough and calling it a day.
Excellent video! I'm actually a recent fan of Apex since arenas came out. I have no issues using the mouse but I was talking about gyro aiming and flick stick one day and went to look up a video and found this and realized how much fun Apex looks with this set up! I've actually got a ps5 controller so why not! Did you have to set up custom stuff for this or was there a profile for Apex on the wiki? I'll probably be able to figure it all out, but it'll be my first time using JSM
I had to set up my own based on what I like. Apex is a little weird about dual inputs so I tend to use keyboard and mouse only instead of mouse and controller.
I just found out about how good gyro really can be. I played quake on the switch and that was all I needed. Also a Controller is much more ergonomic especially if you sit by a computer all day it’s nice to be able to use some different muscles and still be able to aim in some fine games. I love gyro aiming 😍 💪
Warface on the switch has gyro on by default. I can not play on a console without gyro now. Also the disability thing is slightly funny because my buddy downloaded warface to play with me and the gyro and his shaky hands didn't go well
On the Steam Deck, you can use Gyro + trackpads for aiming and still use the right stick for flick stick. It's amazing how the Steam Deck, A handheld PC, has the best controller so far.
the track pads aren't as comfortable for me to use as they are on the steam controller. they are too far down my thumb has to bend at an awkward angle, or I have to rest the deck in a way that gives my hand cramps. otherwise I usually end up using it as a quick menu for items or weapons
@@tekgeekster That's curious; I started using the trackpads on the Steam Deck and I love it, but I wanted to play the Steam Deck on the dock, so I purchased a Steam Controller a few days ago. And while I like the Steam Controller's trackpads, I prefer the squared version from the Steam Deck. So I think your first experiencea - or whatever you are used to - plays a role on your preferences. In any case, the thing is that the Steam Deck allows the possibility of using trackpads, gyro and and right stick for flick stick, all in a single package. I hope future controllers will use (and improve) this format.
I just played a round on splatoon 2 with motion controls boy it’s hard my brain only wants to use the motion control and not stick , guess I gotta get use to it, coming from a background on controller player since the cod 4 days lol and I just felt crippled , but I’ll put in the time and practice
Yeah, it's weird to wrap your head around at first. I used to play a lot of halo, but just going through a lot of different games with their own styles kind of helped.
it clicked for me after like a year of playing. I hope its a faster process for you haha. Even thiough it took me a long time im so grateful i got used to it
Some parts of this video feel ripped straight from Nerrel's gyro aiming videos but still great overall. The Apex footage really sells it, it just straight up looks like mouse and keyboard gameplay lol.
Hey , erm I dunno if you can help but I'm basically new to the whole controller and keyboard mouse gameplay since I'm used to mobile Gaming STRANGE I KNOW,but the thing is I've kind mastered gyroscope on my phone on playing games like codm and other things. The thing is I have no idea how to use or activate this for a controler, since I've just recently got a pc and now just managed to learn how to get the DS4 windows file and connect for games like rocket league etc, however I'm absolutely trash with the sticks in shooter games like warframe. So I was wondering if you could, tell me how to one,...activate gyroscope? And two, how to do it in games like Warframe and all.
I'm thinking about making a video on how to set things up next. If you want, you can visit the gyro aiming discord in the meantime and get some insight on how to set things up there. discord.gg/rUFcj2wk
I'd actually like to try out the joy cons on PC, but have them like the WiiRemote and nunchuk where aiming is on the right. I think it be good to get those headshots in PC games while using a 'controller'.
I've been thinking about this a lot lately but haven't gone through because the joycons I have are starting to drift. Good news though! There's a way to fix it! So I might try it, because it sounds slightly more comfortable for something like this than using both arms to aim on traditional controllers.
@@tekgeekster I ordered a pair Monday (Aussie time). I've already downloaded some free software for them. All I need are the joy cons to show up, install the software, etc. I hope the set up goes very well. Would be good for Twin stick shooters, MMOs (maybe), First and third person shooters (obviously) and ARPGs (like WH40K: Inquisitor - Martyr).
7:02 lol that guy saying gyro is a crutch haha Imagine saying using your hands to control a game instead of your feet is some sort of crutch, that's so ridiculous. Was that really the best excuse he could come up with? At least it's a somewhat honest excuse though...
Just wait till the steam controller 2 comes out lol. If it has the exact same functionality as steam deck controls, it's gona be better than the dualsense, in terms of control options. I was playing quake live with it, and it has been fun trying to fight bots with it. I hold forward on the right stick to keep aiming forwards. I got some good kills Practising that way, but it requires some extra skill than simply using just the gyro for turning and such. What my control style does, is uses the right stick to turn and uses a lower sense gyro to tine tune the aim. I'm not good at it yet. The gyro sensitivity is enough to do rocket jumps though. At the moment, my mind is fighting with it self over two horizontal axis ways of turning, but I believe I'll get the hang of it. I got a couple of good frags, while playing with this scheme. The first time I heard of gyro aiming, I was asking if it was a cheat, like I got the meaning wrong. I thought it might have meant anothe way of aim assist where if your crosshair misses someone, the aim assist brings it back to your opponent, Which I thought was too ridiculous, and then asked what it was, and I think thae guy said it's not much different from using a wiimote to aim, and I went GIMMICK, untill I thought about it. Gyro and flickstick is way more fun than normal controller aim, and it is almost as accurate as the mouse, but it is a pain to configure, for every pc game, probably except the games that support it out of the box.
The only issue I have about this is the moving of the controller like that, I feel like when I'm playing keyboard and mouse I like having that more grounded stability, same with a controller. If there's a way to use it in tandem at like a slight level with a joystick or sc trackpad It could be very helpful overall and be extremely beneficial to all controller players. I mean if I could use the general trackpad/joystick and then the gyro for added precision A game that does it right is rogue company, where you can disable aim assist and use gyro and it has a ton of options. Either way I do appreciate seeing people try and Innovate and better gaming inputs, good video
There is. I tried explaining you can use it in tandem with joystick. There are a lot of ways to set up gyro, but I find free form movement to be very beneficial, especially in games like apex where you're actively aiming at everything. If gyro isn't for you, don't feel bad about it. You're probably already good with mouse.
07:05 The top left comments admits that gyro aiming is better than sticks that's why it should not exist!!!! (maybe if you play against cross players who don't have the option of gyro or mouse controls but, if they do have the option they can't really complain if others use it),
Not too big on flick stick personally. I feel like I get more out of the steam controller's trackpad. It's not as fast, but I still get to aim vertically when gyro might be awkward as my only vertical aiming in some games.
I'm just introducing it as an option. I mentioned how normal aim paired with gyro is still faster than stick by itself before I went into flick stick, but the steam controller is still a great option! I loved mine, but it's response time was low so I swapped for a newer controller. I miss the steam controllers trackpad.
tekgeekster yeah, I totally get that. Even though flick stick is not for me, any amount of interest in non traditional controllers/controller schemes I always appreciate. I think controllers in the mainstream have stagnated and I'd love for them to progress more.
The steam controller doesn't need flick stick as the right trackpad can do the same thing with a left or right swipe but regular controllers need it cos thumbsticks can't emulate the same precision without it
KBM>Gyro>Stick. The issue with gyro and its adoption is the implementation to software and games. Using DS4 Windows, Steam Input, ReWASD, or the game itself, all handles Gyro differently. Even 20 years of joystick software, developers can't even get it consistent from game to game, even mouse support is ass because some ported games convert joystick to mouse (Just Cause 4). Emulation of KBM to controller is the most consistent if you use 1 software on PC and Steam Input by far has the best controller to KBM emulation and Gyro support. The issue with that is games like Warzone or Valorant which don't accept Steam Input and you have to use ReWASD. The issue with ReWASD is that it doesn't have the ability to change In-Menu cursor operations like Steam Input (Detecting and setting different profiles for when the cursor shows/hide on menu). The issue with menu detection now is games like Doom 2016/Eternal uses software emulation of cursor not the windows so that Menu detection doesn't work and the games feels clunky. Sometimes your profiles doesn't transfer to games well. That leaves you with an issue of customizing the controls, some times it takes a long time and technical skills to program for a game to make it for KBM emulation. For example, Apex, you have to change 3 profiles, looting/setting menu, ingame, and viewing the map. That was hard to program if you're not coding/logic literate. Sure, if you get everything working it's satisfying but man... sometimes you're just too lazy and don't got the time to jump loop holes and learn multiple softwares. The adoption for this shit is ass, maybe give it like 10 more years and gyro would be implemented well. If you stick to KBM, your controls and sensitivity 9/10 will stay consistent across games and softwares. Sorry for the long rant lol...
Yeah, it definitely is that way now. That's why native implementation would make everything better, and some games on pc do that (which is magic as far as I know). And yeah it's a pain to set up, but at least figuring out gyro sensitivity is easy as long as you use degrees per second to measure it. I have mine set to 3 ) meaning if I turn my controller 360⁰, I'll be turning 1,080⁰ in game) across all my games and aiming always feels the same across the board.
Titanfall 2. Apex's predecessor by the same team. Unfortunately it's been hacked recently making at least the multiplayer half unplayable but people swear by the campaign. It pretty good I guess. It helps you get used to the mechanics.
This is a great damn video. Why am I just finding out about it now? We need more proponents of gyro aiming. It's so stupid Sony adds the feature to the controller and it hardly gets used. My BIGGEST complaint is multiplatform game touting gyro aiming in their marketing for Switch games but don't release the gyro on the PS4/PS5 counterpart. SO dumb.
I once told a friend that gyro aiming was still worse than keyboard and mouse and challenged him to a 1v1 in black ops. I proceeded to get folded. Gyro is seriously the way to go when it comes to controller and would let controller players actually compete with KBM without literal aimbot. Too bad it'd be such a hard switch. If only games would start defaulting it on.
@@tekgeekster Well by folded I meant by aim. COD isnt really too much of a game where you can "outplay" the opponent. It's more who-shoots-who. Obviously in a more strategic game there's more up in the air but my comment was mainly referring to the aim component
Thought about doing this myself. Play valorant and just focus on ranking up instead of getting clips. Figure if I hit diamond or immortal with a controller it would be impossible to ignore. Is ds5 gyro as good as SC? Edit- I’m a massive gyro believer with 140 hrs in kovaaks but I stopped when the SC thumb pad gave me thumb pain and I’m hesitating to get into flick stick because I’ve heard nothing compares to SC gyro accuracy.
You've heard wrong. Ds5 and switch pro have far smoother gyro's due to their polling rates. I use a hybrid of flick stick and normal stick aim now. Gives me a great balance of slow and large movements and then I use the gyro for shooting targets. Unfortunately valorant blocks inputs from jsm and steam input, so you'll need reWASD or DS4windows as they use real keyboard drivers
The gyro has one serious problem - returning gamepad to the neutral position after, for example, its maximum turn to the left or right. Using a button on gamepad to disable gyro is bad option.
It is a bit tricky to nail down, but if you don't want to sacrifice a button, you can make up for it with the right stick which I use whenever I don't have flick stick on.
@@tekgeekster another limitations: instant camera shacking (with just stick camera is steady that allows to faster detect targets), hardness of tracking close range targets, constant switching types of camera control (gyro+stick), tired hands when constantly holding and turning gamepad or restriction of movement and flicks if holding gamepad on lags. Also some blogers proved that using gamepad in standart way, without aim assist, can compete pc players (nmoose, calamiti, nicewigg in apex for example). Not against gyro, played summary about 4 mounth in different ways - it is too uncomfortable
For me. Up and down gyro aiming is solid. Where gyro comes into question is left right it feels slower and more inconsistent. Your hands can only go so far, but if you do it faster you'll aim will go farther. Forcing you to aim with something so fuild then having to jerk the conttoler isn't ideal. I never used gyro on switch it was dumb you had to move the screen and see less to actually use it. But with a conttoler it's way better. after using it I catch myself slowly moving my conttoler wishing gyro were still on to get that headshot.
@@tekgeekster I tried it out on fortnite, it's why I commented on the second video. Like I said up and down feels prefect, but left and right just isn't the same. You defiantly right tho I should turn off acceleration
@@tekgeekster yeah I really enjoy using it, if I can find a way to make left and right better I'll definitely use it more. It makes the headshots feel better and on purpose
@@tekgeekster yeah, you have a wider range of motion up and down. The default sens and acceleration is Greta. But for left and right your wrists can only go so far before you have to turn your arms. I feel if fortnite separates their sensitivity it'll be easier. Like when playing on stick. You can make looking up and down fast and keep left and right slow if you want
@@tekgeekster after some more testing tho with acceleration off. If someone's starts getting a lil to outta your range you can easily stick aim a lil infront of them saving you the last bit of hand movement
I think the argument of “not being able to do it before” is bs I think it has more to do with demographics (ie most PS4/5 players don’t want motion controls/gyro aiming or won’t use it meaning “wasted” work that could go towards another $10 cosmetic) besides if you go on their track record about addressing big features like crossplay they said “it’s not possible” which as we can tell now they were lying
Absolutely. They're a company not comfortable with taking risks, and not only does it show, it tends to negatively impact them. Just not enough for them to care though.
the problem is how are they going to reliably tell you are using gyro? You can't keep a strong aim assist and allow precision movements with gyro. Look at the Apex legends 1 v 1 pro tourney. All the finalists were on controller...
1v1's are certainly a different case. I did say that you can use whatever control scheme is comfortable for you, but mouse aiming for the most part is better than stick only with aim assist. Apex is a weird subject when talking about how it handles it, considering it's based on titanfall 2, a game that's a lot faster than it. I'm not saying to abandon the old tech if it still works, I just want more people to accept new ways to play for others who could use it or enjoy it. People like to discredit something new and different without giving it a try. This same thing happened when analog sticks were introduced.
I just realized this after one week, your thumbnail is a meme from "Think Mark, Think!"
LOL! I'm glad someone finally noticed it.
That should prevent the weird mouse stuttering apex has when using mouse and controller at the same time
I like to make my control schemes similar to halo 5's hell jumper though if that give's you an idea to how I set things up.
Yep. Man, I noticed this way too late. RUclips doesn't notify me about s***

“Most of the aiming for you” is a massive overstatement. It assists exactly like it’s named.
Yeah, my response exactly
Really depends on the game. Some of them literally be like that.
I'm happy that I never herd that argument
@@theangriestcrusader Apex AA is literally 60% of an aimbot, as long as the character model doesn't stray too far from the crosshairs, apex will track 60% of the way for you. It's absolutely oppressive at close range in the hands of a player that knows how to utilize the AA.
I like to describe it as gyro is a mouse that is controlled through rotation instead of translation. The controller can rest comfortably in your lap even while you are using it to pull off crazy flick shots.
I'll keep it mind for next time
god that's exactly how I describe it.
@@unintelgen2510 Both are good for minor and major movements
I would describe it more like virtual laser pointer.
I really don't understand why this hasn't been already implemented in console games as an option. These gyroscopes have been in controllers for ages now. Thanks for making this video though, this should really come under the attention of game developers as soon as possible.
There is one benefit regarding Gyro for me compared to thumbstick or mouse only.
Its simply more fun and makes so much sense for FPS games

Gyro aiming in Astro's Playroom opened my eyes at how amazing the mechanic is, almost as versatile and effective as a computer mouse, we need this!!!
the splatoon community got this right years ago, controller sticks are horrible for aiming and you don't need aim assist to fix it, all you need is gyro and good controller mapping.
Sticks are pretty okay for steering though. And other contextual things. Just not aiming.
At least, not by themselves.
@@tekgeekster i like using controllers more than kb&m so I'm fine with sticks, but if I'm playing PvP/competitive games i gotta switch over haha
I'm glad more people are pushing for gyro aiming. It's the future. I hate playing fps games without it. I hope we see more of it in the future.
I agree fully, i think gyro can pave way for aim assist to be gone properly so we can have fair fights in games
it honestly depends in the game, like splatoon 2 NEEDS aim assist for stick players since gyro is SO STRONG
Aim Assist= Aimbot.
imo it depends on the game, for cod sticks are so much better but for splatoon 2 gyro is easily king
@@erronn.
@@erronn. Cod "work better" with sticks, because ther obscene amount of aim assist
a good example of a amazing integration of gyro aiming is the splatoon series from Nintendo, makes the movement flow amazingly in matches
Every industry Standard began as a gimmick. That's how things become standard
as a pc player i reallllly want gyro aiming to take off on console so you can have more fast aiming games like quake, unreal, apex, overwatch, and it be fairer in cross play.
Nice video
Make sure to disable AA to hopefully prevent the anticheat from booting you.
You my brother need way more views, your editing skills are amazing. Lets get gyro noticed 👍
Both you and nerrel have the best gyro arguments
Thanks. Halfway done with my review of the dualsense edge, so I expect a flood of content to follow that.
Excellent vid! It's been exciting seeing you rocking Apex with gyro!
Thanks. My brain is mush.
High sens. gyro gamers 🤝low sens. gyro gamers

Great video man and very informative! Hope to see gyro implemented into more games in the future.
Two questions:
The help with looting with gyro is one of the best things. I can't see myself looting any other way.
I've never heard of gyro aiming till this video , thank you
Every mobile gamer who wants to win firefights uses gyro now. i don't see anyone outside mobile gaming even mention gyro. it's wild.
This video started quite the journey for me, after experiments on a pc with the ds4 I decided to grab the Armor-x pro for my series s. I absolutely destroyed my thumb and gyro kept me in the game. So thank you for one of the best videos Ive seen on gyro, and my god is it so far from a gimmick!!
hey where can you buy one?

The way Zelda botw used gyro aiming completely changed my view of it. I disliked (actually kinda still do) the Splatoon way where you use gyro for big and small movements, but in zelda I was stick aiming and making the final adjustments with gyro without even noticing it at first. It just felt conpletely natural. Now I keep thinking why aren't all console shooters working this way?
Splatoon kinda works that way, but the lack of vertical aiming on the right stick is unfortunate. It would alleviate the need for a "recenter button"
Why were making big adjustments with gyro in Splatoon?

Thank you for liking my work, and supporting gyro aiming.
It's a mouse shoved into the controller:
Simply. Awesome.
It's so effective, I gave up my $130 gaming mouse I bought in favor of something you can buy for about half that.
Wish sony would hurry up and make one for the dualsense.
paddles would make quick swapping in doom eternal significantly easier
@@justarandomperson3700 Not terribly so with weapon/quick select on the face buttons, though even before I switched to controllers I always swapped with weapon keys over the 'last weapon' key. (assuming that's what you'd map it to)
That said it would be slightly faster, and probably easier overall to pull off frankly.
Oh, so would I! Just because of what I said in the video doesn't make them any less useful. lol
It's nice to know that someone else has the same experiences as me with gyro, and I get it about Apex, it's been a pretty overwhelming game to me too, but not because of aiming either.
In Apex, almost anything can kill you at any moment. Which is frustrating.
@@tekgeekster Yeah, I have almost zero environment awareness and so people catch me offguard quite frequently
I'd love to know how to play that on mouse and keyboard. lol
Just showing the compassion would give people a good idea of what it'd be like on a certain game
Anyways good video, I'm hoping for more people to get on board with gyro.
I plan on addressing some of these things in the next video... which is going to be on quake if you could tell by the teaser at the end of the video. lol
Thanks for the suggestions though, I kind of want to focus on more PvP for these videos to sway the hard core crowd as they're usually the hardest bunch to convince, but I do want to stray from that of I have nothing else to play.
Further proof that people aren't even thinking when they say get gud
Tried out Apex on the switch to test out the gyro implementation, and... Oh God, what a nightmare. I didn't understand why it felt so horrible, tried to adjust sensitivity in a bunch of different ways (because for some reason they decided to put in multiple sliders that adjust the sensitivity in seemingly different ways, that I still can't understand), and nothing felt good. Now that you mentioned the drift compensation it all makes sense, thanks.
Yeah, the switch port when I tried it was horrible. It's sad to hear they've done jack squat to fix it so far.
Ehh I tried Apex I could never get into the game. I'm the type of person that if I'm feelin the game I'll go out of my way to learn the controls no matter how obscure they may seem.
Nice video dude, really good showcase of gyro
@ So you think this could unlock mouse gyro on Xbox in K&M supported games? Because that would be big.
@@tekgeekster I just got a ps5 and I won’t play apex on it until it has gyro
@@tekgeekster that’s debatable. Fortnite has seen a huge surge of gyro users since they added it and other games have too. And a few players have managed to make it work on PS5 with some PC junk and it helped them a ton. In other words it’s viable and respawn may understand tagt

So something I've been wanting to try out- gyro aiming with optical sensor movement. Or put another way, mouse and gyro aiming together, each one covering the weaknesses of the other. Someone built a controller that could conceivably combine the input methods!
You in the gyro aiming discord? The people there would love talking about it.
@@tekgeekster I'll get there. But first, we need to talk about this "Neeral" character you mentioned in the video, lol
Edit: they have seen the controller Tech Yesterday has developed.
@@tekgeekster luckily my steam controller is fresh. maybe with some luck in 2 or 3 years valve release a V2.
I'd love to see them do that.
Ive been using the dualsense nonstop for the past few months and the gyro is much better than the steam controllers. So much so that it makes me prefer the dualsense. The steam controller's touchpads will always be better than thumbsticks though
Adapt, or git guuud.
This makes me wanna go back to controller, haha. I've never even seen this until now. Really cool stuff.
On that note, two more games added native support on ps5 and pc in the past month.
(The Finals and Helldivers 2)
I started playing gears 5 with gyro aiming. It’s ridiculous!!!
The same thing could be said about pointer controls. Unfortunatly those got forgotten in favor of pushing gyro.
Pointer controls, while convenient for aiming within a 45° window, ain't great for much else, and either needs external tracking or uses a gyroscope anyway, so at the very least, you can have both. But developers probably won't bother with it thinking adding gyro was enough and calling it a day.
would be cool to see some more light gun game revivals though.
@@tekgeeksterWell now that I have tried gyro for over a year I must admit I find it hard to play a shooter without it.

Also the disability thing is slightly funny because my buddy downloaded warface to play with me and the gyro and his shaky hands didn't go well
Yeah. Like I said, not all disabilities are made equal. Some really don't pair well with gyro, others do.

My rabbit hole is 3 years long.
7:02 lol that guy saying gyro is a crutch haha
Imagine saying using your hands to control a game instead of your feet is some sort of crutch, that's so ridiculous. Was that really the best excuse he could come up with? At least it's a somewhat honest excuse though...
It's like a guy in a wheelchair telling everyone standing up to sit down because it's not fair to him, and he's not even handicapped.
I mean if I could use the general trackpad/joystick and then the gyro for added precision
A game that does it right is rogue company, where you can disable aim assist and use gyro and it has a ton of options.
We need more people who playing apex that are training for surgery. Most of my friends don’t like gyro because they flinch while they play.

Crossplay and accessibility is a slap in the face for that argument.
@@Anna_Rae Absolutely. Thanks for subscribing btw.

SO dumb.
Yeah. You see my frustration with it.

It's up to you to decide how to play. I'm just asking people to keep an open mind.
When you combine gyro with flick stick you shouldn't have a problem with needing to go to a neutral position
@@CandarianGaming why not, if you anyway have to turn gamepad left and right with gyro on target?)
liked just for the bomberman 64 music
Video was good quality too
What’s the gyro discord? I have a little project I’ve kinda been working on and could probably use some input from you all
I didn't want to link it directly in the video. Don't want feel like I'm overstepping any boundaries, but here it is: discord.gg/b4nAm6F
@@tekgeekster I understand. Thanks!
I used to gyro for playing pubg mobile for more than two years now... It's so easy for me and gyro is so unbelievably deadly..
@@tekgeekster left and right sens is just too slow but cranking up the sens makes up and down a bit too fast for slower movement
@@tekgeekster after some more testing tho with acceleration off. If someone's starts getting a lil to outta your range you can easily stick aim a lil infront of them saving you the last bit of hand movement
Great video. I love gyro aiming on my SC and dualsense. Unfortunately I suck at games, gyro or not....
As long as you have fun with it is what I learned... which wasn't the case for me in apex. Lol.
@@tekgeekster I agree. I actually hate using analog sticks but I think gyro is fun to use and more reliable once you understand it.
