Yeah Mangini is wildly overrated. Dude plays like a robot. He can talk about the “musicality” and how he plays with emotion all he wants. He doesn’t. Zero feel. Portnoy WAS dream theater. He wrote so many of the lyrics as well.
@@rexross5189 yup. The feel as you said. It feels lost to me with mangini. Kudos for them to keep going of course but their sound and songs just isn’t my thing now. I listen to the portnoy era DT. Thats it.
What an awesome set of drums. Tama are far and away the kit makers around and this proff of that. Plus Portnoy is a real legend. What more could you want? Brillaint.
+JulianFernandez Sounds not good in a promotional video if you say: Well, I first played Tama but Mapex endorsed me at first, so I played Mapex for 3 years and then Tama came up with an endorsement" :D
+AAXplosion I would have just said, "Before I became a part of the Tama family, I used Mapex drums and then I found out that there are so many other drums in different drum brands out there in this world that sound 100x better so I wrote a foul language'd letter to Mapex saying screw you then I made the big switch to Tama after testing out 500 crappy drums by 20 crappy brands like Yamaha, DW, Ludwig, OCDP, Pearl, Sonor, etc. I think Tama should be the only company to sell drums hands down and those other brands should go suck my fluff ;) *end interview*
@@bball98038 mapex screwed me, the rep repeatedly lied. They could not provide the drums I ordered. The Saturn are great drums, but mapex CS blows ass. They have a bad habit of showing things online that they cannot provide. At one point, they lost the veneering company, and knew they could not produce the drums, but kept saying "Maybe 30-90 days". After a year, still nothing. Never again.
@OneTakeJesus If you're talking about the floor tom to the left of the 2nd hi-hat (if you are standing behind the kit looking at it), I think it's just a 14" Tom that is only 5.5" deep. I looked on Mike's website, but the most recent setup he had up there was the mirage monster. It looks the same on the main side of the kit and it listed that drum as a 14" Tom. I also think it has a bottom head here...it has two rims on it. The tom he talks about at 4:00 is single headed.
"I played many of the different lines from Imperialstar (as a kid) to you know aahhhh (shit what was it named?...) Starclassic Maple..... (shit, I realize I just played 2 lines from Tama) and NOW I'm playing the Bubinga Shells (puh.....).... and for me it's (ok, why I'm playing the bubings shells??? Hmmm....) the richest sounding drum I've ever played. (Cool, that's because I'm not playing maple anymore)." Love this interview! So authentic and real :D Once he said in an interview it doesn't matter what he playes, essentially he hits things. :D
I think this guy has been here been there since the 90's but left in the 2000's i guess. Eric Disrude was a pretty interesting character. I'm pretty certain it was Jose setting up Mike's kit from scratch in the intro of his Progressive Concept DVD.
@clance13 I don't see how you could classify the kit he's referring to as a jazz kit simply because it only has one up and two down. The toms could all be above 13 inches. Would you now consider it a "jazz kit"?
I always loved bubinga. I love the star series bubinga now even more than these (except the price being almost 5x as much). I wish more companies made them.
Yes that is true philburzynski. I know that when he played on the awake album of 1994, he used Mapex. But for the most part, he has play the best drums in the world, TAMA. No other drums come close. Would you agree?
@triforce10155 yeah i know now just at the time i had no idea about it. I wouldn't say they would be better off without him. They probably just didn't want to take a break, and may have thought that it was disrespectful of make to ask for one. Since as we all know a lot of musicians have huge egos.
i would have to disagree...though his soloing style is rather spastic, he is actually extremely musical in ability. has a perfect grasp over timing and dynamics really. that's why they picked him, he matched what was on the record flawlessly.
@CHICKMAGNET66666 I think so, yeah. Sabian cymbals ALWAYS open up great when your talking about the professional series. So I'm guessing its the recording.
I actually really liked his Mapex sounding kit on Awake and a Change of Seasons. I really love that drum sound.
especially the snare
04:58 little did he know..
The foreshadowing...
hahaha, man, you're bad xD
oof
@Vic Santiago yeah but i think double bass pedals are much better sound than single bass with twin pedal thats why fans still choose MP drum sounds
I miss this guy playing for dream theater
Max Stevanus, without him I just stop listening dream theatre cause to me it doesn't feel the metal part.
Yeah Mangini is wildly overrated. Dude plays like a robot. He can talk about the “musicality” and how he plays with emotion all he wants. He doesn’t. Zero feel. Portnoy WAS dream theater. He wrote so many of the lyrics as well.
@@rexross5189 Nah, most certainly he is NOT a robot. Watch his late 90's drum solo. Man has everything Portnoy wishes he had
@@rexross5189 yup. The feel as you said. It feels lost to me with mangini. Kudos for them to keep going of course but their sound and songs just isn’t my thing now. I listen to the portnoy era DT. Thats it.
@@lcollingwood5959you’re missing out heavy dude. Distance over time is one of their best albums ever. Top 3 imo

"...Mike Manginniiiiii..."
litttllleee did he know
I loooove that clicking sound he gets out of his bass drum!
At 5:24 its A rite of passage from Dream Theater's Black clouds and Silver Lining album
"Mike Mangini"
Zachary Phillips Oh, that irony of life... ^_^
that parrot colored bear is awesome
List of songs in this video please????
i love how he says at 3:28 "A traditional Metal Kit"XD
the song is Rite of Passage from Dream Theater's Black Clouds and Sliver Linings album...currently being toured, BTW
Even his "small" kit is big:D haha i love you Mike:D!
He cited Mike Manginni, he prophesied his successor! Portnoy Lives in my heart forever! But Manginni is very good drummer too!
I like saying Bubinga... Such a fun word to say :)
From 17? Really? Forgot about Mapex, huh?

+Alex Grachek hahahaha. that a way of answering
He actually can't say or show anything about Mapex. On his Tama contract says that
@@bball98038 mapex screwed me, the rep repeatedly lied. They could not provide the drums I ordered. The Saturn are great drums, but mapex CS blows ass. u guys want to hear them in action look up dream theater live 2010 and look for a rite of passage, these drums sounded amazing
The drum tech is John Myung's brother
All the more reason why Mangini is a good choice to take on Mike's throne. Great player and a great friend of Mike!
I think this is his best looking kit yet
@OneTakeJesus If you're talking about the floor tom to the left of the 2nd hi-hat (if you are standing behind the kit looking at it), I think it's just a 14" Tom that is only 5.5" deep. @LarsThusingDrummer What do you mean by back heads? One's that the bass pedal hits (Batter) or the part on the front of the drum that say TAMA?
Tama, Sabian .... Damnnn!
bit of a novice with Dream Theater but have just discovered how awesome Mike Portnoy is what is the song at the start?
What an awesome beard!!!!!!!

Anybody know what that song playing is? I love it :D
La serie starclassic ya no se fabrica en Japón??

hey mike, congrats on winning 2011 drummer of the year btw your my idol
@Skyoneer2007 Right...I would go with the deccabons because they're by ddrum, but I do enjoy Tama just as much
@clance13 I don't see how you could classify the kit he's referring to as a jazz kit simply because it only has one up and two down. The toms could all be above 13 inches. Would you now consider it a "jazz kit"?
He changed his drum tech? I liked that dude from the dvd. wonder where he went to
And where can I buy this?
What are these heads on the toms ? cool effect ! look like the Aquarian but Portnoy is with Remo !
We all want good old fashioned wood in the right circumstance.
so he had full bubinga kit in Black Clouds & Silver Linings finish which is now B/B only?
What are acrylic drums made up of?
thanks man
Does anyone know what the composition of the shells is on the right side/smaller kit are/is?
When they get the drum kit from gig to gig, do they have to set all that shit up or is it on some kind of platform?
"i really wanted some good old fashon WOOD........... to beat up."
can someone tell me the song in the beginning thanks
Song at the beginning??
@sick898 no it was something like 5 piece "....."
and i dont know what should be on the "....."
he has a nice beard! :-D
at first I thought it was the light around him...
whats the song
Song at the beginning?????!!!
What is the song in the very beginning?
I MISS PORTNOY IN DT SOO BAD!!!
And the Black clouds silver lining album def. IMO got the nicest drum sound of all the albums!
Mike is great!
I have this kit and its stellar
@allmetaliswelcome The only thing I can think of is Jungle Kit.
Is his floor tom on the left side of the kit a snare? O_O
SpinalAlloy But why?????!!!!😄
Mike portnoy should nene around and troll the internet I think he would be great at it
Bubingas , like a very good speaker, have a wide frequency range unlike any other drums made today.
I always loved bubinga. I love the star series bubinga now even more than these (except the price being almost 5x as much). I wish more companies made them.
Can I not buy these anymore?
the best drumer
Mike Porntoy
at 2:07 to 2:09 what the the drums that hes playing called?
Damn they sound nice
Well, now that I'm not in DREAM THEATER anymore... I just use
a 4-piece kit... LOL
What song
Can someone tell me if this shirt is on sell ?
Yes that is true philburzynski. I know that when he played on the awake album of 1994, he used Mapex. But for the most part, he has play the best drums in the world, TAMA. No other drums come close. Would you agree?
What happened to Eric Disrude?
Good job man
A rite of passage :)
portnoy is the best!!!!!!!Tama freee drums for all DRUMMERSS!!
@inimicalODDITY
the dude I replied to asked how this sort of kit is called. this kit isnt by far a jazz kit
@Pearldrum07 Actually he was kicked out. He wanted to take a break but the rest of the band thought that itd be better off with out him.
Mike, please come back to DT
what is the finishes of the drum? look awesome
***** Black Clouds :)
***** The album is Black Clouds and Silver Linings haha.
how do you call a 5 piece kit with 2 floortoms and one racktom? that has a special name right?
Mike rules
@LarsThusingDrummer Clear PowerStroke 3
at 4:19 is he using a strap or a chain drive on his double pedal?
Its a double chain drive
Why is the bass played setting up the drums
480p???
3:33 is´t very small floor tom?
I wonder what he is playing now being back at DT.
i wish i had two crazy huge kits two play on
@triforce10155 yeah i know now just at the time i had no idea about it. I wouldn't say they would be better off without him. They probably just didn't want to take a break, and may have thought that it was disrespectful of make to ask for one. Since as we all know a lot of musicians have huge egos.
sou muito Fã da TAMA
what song is that in the introduction section part ??
Dream theater - a rite of passage
i would have to disagree...though his soloing style is rather spastic, he is actually extremely musical in ability. has a perfect grasp over timing and dynamics really. that's why they picked him, he matched what was on the record flawlessly.
in the next catalog, "mike portnoy signature kit, $5000" LOL
very thick and some kind of natural sound.
@labyrinthos1 Yea, Mapex is in the top 5, with Sonor for sure. Too bad they're incredibly expensive.
@SpinalAlloy the drum tech put it from the beggining again and again and again
Hmmm. Can anybody tell if he's using the middle finger on index finger fulcrum? It appears to be middle finger: 1:51
@Bostafito. The snear is not iron you fool. It is steel. If you have played the drum before you must surely know what it's made of.
Gimmee a Bubinga guitar
@CHR1ZA130K its actually his hi-hat attachment which sits in a similar position to a trigger. i was like :O aswell at first haha
Why not?!
he mentions mangini so casually, i doubt he thought he would be his replacement haha
0:46-0:50 is a complete photobomb!
el mas grande!!
@CHICKMAGNET66666 I think so, yeah. Sabian cymbals ALWAYS open up great when your talking about the professional series. So I'm guessing its the recording.
Buzzzinga xD
