When I was a kid in the 70s/80s my dad loved Iron Maiden, the local music store had their entire front window painted to look like the Killers album cover when that came out then did it again for Number Of The Beast, my dad bought them both and I got into them, even jumped around with cardboard cutout guitars to classic metal and NWOBHM. I got a real Fender Strat for Festivus in 1981 when I was 11 but I really sucked, Festivus 1983 I started taking drum lessons thanks to Dave Lombardo's thunderous double bass drums Slayer's Show No Mercy. I got my first drum kit for my birthday in March of 1984 and also got some LPs and cassettes including Piece Of Mind, the first thing I did after setting it all up and hearing the entire album was try to learn that opening to Where Eagles Dare. I played along to that album so many times learning by ear but still cannot play most Maiden songs with just one bass pedal. I honestly didn't know Nicko used one bass pedal until Powerslave came out.
The story he told about about dropping the needle on the Pice of Mind album´s first song was exactly my experince. It was my first time hearing real heavy metal sounds with this album and the beginnng of the album can not be more spectacular.I like very much how he talks about music.
Yeah, early 80s metal scene was amazing, you really had to be there, my dad took me to see Raven in Portland in August 1983 and Metallica was the opener, I was 13 and was hooked on thrash ever since, I did love hardcore punk too, he took me to see Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics in Seattle in 1981, the first time I ever saw a real moshpit. And DOA drummer Chuck Biscuits gave me my very first drum lesson. Show No Mercy was the very first album I ever bought and got Kill 'Em All on Cardboard Box Appreciation Day with Festivus money that went to LPs, cassettes and comic books. The Beatles Museum in Vancouver was where I got both of them, it was also a comic book store, one of those dingy places in a basement that also sold live bootlegs and weed on the side. My dad grew his weed plants for him so I got a discount.
10:33 i got a chance to drive bruce d to a show once back in '22 concord pavilion. Very much a humble get up and go just cool dude. The whole band was. Janick gers was just hanging out with us. Dave Murray and adrian smith were even cool but distant. We were all just trying to give them some space. Cool dudes. Ive been a fan forever
It's funny Mike mentions DT wanting to be a fusion of Maiden & Rush is hilarious as if I was a musi IA that would have been my goal as well maybe with a splash of old thrash like Metallica.
Geez how old is this video ? Especially the part where he talks about Bruce Dickinson's throat cancer ? Bruce has long since, Thankfully , 💯% recovered.
Stupid take. This is a compilation of many different videos. The video he was talking about Metallica and Cliff that was just a general music influence video. He played Whiplash right after
to be fair this entire vid is a compilation of all of his times being on Loudwire. He's pretty relevant right now so it not only helps the RUclips channels grow but also helps Dream Theater grow.
Gacharic Spin - Tamashii They have a live version with two drummers, then during Covid did a “toys” version where the entire band plays toy instruments. It’s both hilarious and brilliant
I don't trust people when they pronounce Neil Peart's name the way it apparently is supposed to be pronounced. Most everyone pronounced it Neil Puurt. But all of a sudden everyone knows to say Neil Peert. Or when they say YYZ they say YYZed. Who the fuck would know that but a Canadian?
#2 Maybe MP is an overrated for many of you guys, but we have to admit he bring that funny and enjoyable side on drums, he's like an Ringo for Progressive metal drummer drumming 😅
@@markbaston8147 agreed, but I've seen people saying he is overrated. For me is an inspiration and he shows that you can play, have fun and love what you do and what you play. He created a unique style and we have to honor that
Bro how many times they upload the same video😭
Idk what i was saying ive just seen the videos. Its actually been a min since portnoy was on here
As many times as it takes for ur comment to drive even more engagement for them😂
It’s a business
Loudwire is the Metallica of metal journalism.
That's not a complement.
This sucks
Seriously. I think I seen this three years ago. I dunno.
As a Canadian, all I have to say is, c’mon Mike, it’s YYZED!😂👍🏻
I'm glad to see some love for Charlie Benante. He is so underrated and the best of the Big 4 in my humble opinion.
It's funny how he talks about Geddy's vocals, I feel the same way about Dream Theater lol
Labrie definitely sounds like he's in a different band, but still having fun hanging out with his friends and they let him because they love him.
@@MapleFriedThat's how progressive metal vocalists should sounds like, dumbshit.
yeah dream theater sucks ass too
How about megadeth and motley crue
@MapleFried I mean when they chose him they specifically wanted that type of voice.
Mike Portnoy is amazing
This dude was one of the biggest influences on me as a musician.
He is truly one of the greats.

Iron Maiden, and Rush are my 2 favorite bands man
One true legend...love his comments about Bruce. Love and peace man
This guy could have a great stand up comedy career as well

We love Mike!!!!
hey Mike, play Pneuma
He already did it in Drumeo
Opening up fresh wounds ...
He'd probalby say "fuck you, I'm not doing that again" 🤣
I see what you did there. Nice! 😉
OMG he has a Dekkar shirt. Mike Portnoy is the greatest.
Nicko introduced himself to the world with a BANG!
The Prisoner -- one of the best intros of all time
Props for the DEKKAR shirt
Mike Portnoy owns.
When i was a kid, i always liked getting clear cassettes on trips to the states. Canada only had black ones.
"Mister Foot"! Brilliant!
I wanna hang out with this dude, he seems pretty cool
Jesus Christ!!! Slayer on the Hello Kitty kit nearly made me piss my pants laughing!!! Seriously!
Mad props for the De La Soul reference!!
Serenity now. I’m waiting for Mr Costanza to shout it 😂
Working Man is my favorite rush song.
4:06 YYZ 😂😂🤪🤪🤣🤣😂😂🤪🤪 one of the funniest things EVER!!!!
Gotta love the man. 100% rock.
Well done mike
5:25 Hello Kitty's toms sound similar to Rush's.
Drummers keep time but in the end it's Time's drum that we all march to.
Love the DEKKAR shirt! 🤘
I don't know man. For me personally... Show No Mercy to this day is my favorite Slayer album.
Now I want a Play Kitty drum set! 😢

Is Mike wearing a Dekkar shirt? Omggg
Yep! That’s how I like my Dream Theater (without vocals) 😒

Can I say that HK drum kit sounds way much better than those triggered drum tracks out there?! That bass drum is 🔥😅
Cool Vio-

"Yeah! 👉🏼 Give that man a fish!" 🐟

Love ya, Mike!!!😁👍
Absolute genius. So funny.
Did you know the original idea for Dream Theater was across between Rusch and iron maiden interesting yeah he is a great drummer though
WHAT IS THE SONG FOR YOUR RUclips VIDEO INTRO
(The fast metal intro in loud list videos)
I like exploring music boundaries
Mike îs #5 în my opinion
Serenity now...Insanity later.
The greatest drum album of all time...Moving Pictures

When Rhingo starr desired to play methal 😄😄😄💓💓💓💓💓
I miss Lamour. Great rock 'n roll shithole in NYC.
Serenity now!
Portnoy and Akerfeldt should play together
He has commented that that’s his one collaboration that the hasn’t been able to make happen but he wants to.
Why you never do some new content? It’s always reuploads.
clive burr!
Why does it seem like since Mike rejoined Dream Theater it's less like he's back in Dream Theater and more like he just became a youtuber?
to be fair this entire vid is a compilation of all of his times being on Loudwire. He's pretty relevant right now so it not only helps the RUclips channels grow but also helps Dream Theater grow.
Is this the video where he plays Pneuma?
LMAO. LOL. FUNNY AS FUCK. HAHAHAHAHA. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
